It's very interesting how the locals flock here to drink the kool-aid, simply because it's overpriced and has fancy, but quite unnecessary, valet parking. Let me tell you how I really feel. Mohawk house is the perfect place to step away and relax! Whether with family or with your spouse! Excellent service and incredible food! We only visited the bar this time around. If you like tuna, you have to try the tuna tar tar tacos at the bar. The sweet potato fries are crispy with a buttery cinnamon taste and the brick oven pizzas always exceed expectations! We had the wild deer pizza which had fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, basil and just the right amount of sauce. There is entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings bringing you back to college days. Since we had a heavier app, We had the Tuna tartar tacos and goat cheese and beet salad. I was more than completely satisfied. Everything so good! Highly recommended. Food was just okay and service was awful (rather nonexistent). Don't bother. Table of 6 with a baby in a stroller and you're going to lead us to a table upstairs...really?! We'll just lug our stroller all the way up, thanks. The waitress was barely visible. Bad service. I will say that the bussers really tried though. We kept having to grab someone to order drinks or any food. Asked to see a pub menu and was brought one (for a table of 6) after 10 min. Even getting the check and waiting to pay took at least 20 min of waiting. Waitress was rarely in sight. Food was unremarkable. Most dishes were average. Corn soup was ehh. Obviously fresh summer corn and sweet, but had no depth or texture. Calamari was crispy and good sauce. Lobster ravioli was mediocre and expensive. Lobster mac and cheese was thick and okay. Crab cake was just a bunch of potato and filler. Not worth it. Shishito peppers were over cooked and soggy. Scallops entree was just okay. Average and unmemorable. Awful service. Food was fine, but the wait was just not worth it. 12 of us made a reservation for my friend's bachelorette dinner. We arrived around 7:20 and it was decently crowded, but it started to thin out over the next hour. The food took a while to come out (I get that it was a big order) but the waiter could not get our check together. 3 and a half hours later, 5 waitresses were standing in the back doing nothing while our waiter seemed to be hanging in the bar room, ignoring our check. My friend had to demand our cards back at 10:20 from the man at the front desk because no one was paying us any attention anymore. Not the way to treat your customers. read more

The Mohawk House is one of the most attractive restaurants in Sparta. It was close to my birthday so we decided to have an early dinner consisting of a few appetizers. We ordered the mushroom soup. My husband thought is was bland. I thought it was OK. We also had the salumi platter and a raw bar seafood platter. The crackers on the salumi platter were stale. Nothing special about the dish. The biggest problem was the seafood platter that had items that were past their prime, this included the raw clams and a couple pieces of the crab. Spouse said the oysters that he had at the San Moritz the night before were a lot better than the ones served here. We also ordered the cheesecake platter. The cheesecake was a bit bland and had a funny texture. The service was good. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in town. I was there today for easter and it was an AMAZING experience. It is such a fancy place the looks of the hole building in and out is are unique like nothing in sparta. the food it's so good I asked for the filet mignon and is one the best I've ever had. The service was really efficient and the people there is so gentle and nice. It really is a great place to go, the complementarity valet parking service that they provide just adds to the hole experience that just makes you feel like a high class costumer. I have been to the Mohawk house 3 times in 3 years. High prices for mediocre food and unprofessional, slow service.

I've been here twice, the first just for beers and pizza with friends to watch a football game on TV. The second was with a large group (20+) of friends for lunch. The atmosphere is nice - warm and comfortable, with a ski lodge like feel to it. First and foremost there is the beer. Fifty foreign and craft beers on tap and the menu is rotated regularly so there is always something new to try. The beer menu contains the rare and the familiar and bartenders are knowledgeable enough to make suggestions if you tell them what kinds of beer you like. The beer is fresh and served in style appropriate glasses. Our dinning experience was on the "pub side" so only applies to that, however it's been my experience that places that serve high quality food do it in the main dining room and the bar. I ordered a rare cheddar burger with grilled onions. My wife ordered the fried calamari and the Autumn Salad. Instead of the grilled onions I asked for, I received bacon on my burger. Being that I like bacon I didn't complain, however I was disappointed by the size of the burger. For $9 I was expecting something more substantial. I though for a moment I accidentally ordered a "slider". Though I ordered rare it came medium, the meat was unremarkable and the pretzel bun added little. I wasn't expecting a "half pounder", but I was hoping for something that would take more than 4 bites to finish. My wife complained that her Autumn Salad was supposed to come with Gouda cheese, but there was no sign of it on the salad. We had to flag down the server to bring us a small cup of grated Gouda to add to the salad. The chicken on the salad was overcooked, dry and leathery and she thought the dressing was overly sweet. The calamari was tender and perfectly cooked, all 8-10 tiny pieces. I'm not the sort who is impressed by huge portions, however they could have tripled the portion and still nobody would have been wowed by the portion size. A friend sitting next to me ordered the filet mignon sandwich and complained that it was all bread and no meat. Another member of our party complained that his pizza crust wasn't completely cooked. Though I didn't poll the rest of the party about the food, they all ate quietly without the raves you often hear when you are eating with a group where the food is top notch. Perhaps they had no complaints or perhaps they were just being polite because I chose the venue. Our server was pleasant enough. He patiently waited while several members of our party tried to decide on a beer and was kind enough to bring a few samples for the indecisive ones to try. I sensed that he wasn't exactly thrilled, but he put on a good face so give him credit for that. Bottom line is that if you are a beer aficionado this place is worth a trip (I gave the place an extra star due to the beer), but the food is a disappointment, even more so because it's not a cheap place. read more

I should have known better. Went back when I said I wouldn't. Unless you're a regular, or a member of the local upper establishment, your service will be significantly below stellar. The aforementioned will get first and prompt service, and there is a reasonable chance you will be ignored. I freaking loved Mohawk House. This was our first night group dinner during my stay in Branchville. My group got here about 45 minutes before everyone else (surprise, surprise) and had a few drinks. The atmosphere in here is fantastic: rusty and cozy and kind of reminds me of a hunting club lounge. Great views, fantastic bar area and great beer selection. The boys were in heaven. Service was attentive. Once everyone else arrived, they put out a couple tables of appetizers, which are always my favorite part. The wings were actually really good. I had salmon for dinner, which was delicious. I was less-than-crazy about the desserts, but I'm not really a dessert person anyway. One problem with this place...what the hell is up with the mandatory valet? Why can I not park my own damn car? I would definitely come back here, but this place is hard as hell to get to. Been here quite a few times over the past years. Smelled better outside in the parking lot than the meal tasted. Great corn soup appetizer, but after that nothing that really thrilled the senses. Lobster/shrimp ratatouille over cavatappi was ok but not worth the $55 and 8 oz filet mignon was great in choice of cut but lacked any flavor. Two people, soup, 2 glasses of basic red zin wine, one side and one dessert totaled $173.00. With a tip we were well in the low $200's. That is a little steep for what we received. We went to dinner on Valentine's day, it was my first time there. We were sat on the second floor in a small room. At first service was great. My only complaint was that the lobster tail that I added to my steak was TINY and looked like a shrimp cut in half. But then our waiter, John, decided to disappear. He apparently was taking tables on the first floor only for the 2nd seating and we sat there for 45 minutes with no service. I had to track down another waitress to find him and when he arrived he acted like NOTHING was wrong and asked if we wanted dessert. We paid our bill that was over $300 and left. We will NEVER go back again. I can get an "ok" steak and better service anywhere else. Don't waste your money. read more

We ate in the lounge, probably a mistake, since the crowd was not interested in food, hoodies and backwards baseball caps mostly interested in drinking and getting loud. We had the tasteless sausage ricotta pizza (awful), and terrible Caesar salads with thin dry chicken pieces on top, lacking any flavor. The Brussels sprouts were covered in some kind of heavy sweet chili sauce, so anything healthy about the dish was negated. yuck. 3 stars for the fish 'n chips, nice server and the gorgeous space. I'll start by saying at the beginning everything was great. The valet was quick to greet us and we were lead to our table immediately upon entering the restaurant. The service was excellent at first as well. Then it all went downhill. The food was excellent and the beer selection was top notch but after ordering our appetizers our server was nonexistent. We received our appetizers after a fairly long wait and had to wait forever for anyone to pick up our plates when we were done. Then nothing. Nobody came by to check on our drinks or inform us about why our entrees were taking so long. Finally after about 15 minutes our server emerged with complimentary soup because our entrees were taking so long. After another interminable wait we finally received our entrees. Again nobody came by to check on us for 15-20 minutes. We had to literally grab someone who was walking by to get our plates cleared and ask for a dessert menu. Two of the 4 people in our party ordered dessert but the server brought out 2 comped desserts and apologized for being a terrible server which was nice but then she disappeared again. It's all well and good to apologize but you should at least make an effort to improve after that. My wife and I have both worked in restaurants so we are very understanding but if you don't try to make an effort to make up for ignoring us you will get little sympathy. We waited another 10-15 minutes for someone to clear our plates after dessert and asked for our check. We actually asked to have the check split between our 2 groups of people before ordering but our server apparently didn't decide to do that until the end of the night. So we had to wait another 15 minutes to get the bill straightened out. While it's not incredibly expensive it's a fairly high end restaurant for this area and you would expect the service to align with the cost. It started out that way but in the end it was more like the service you would receive from a low end diner. I will probably visit again for the beer selection alone but will probably stick to the bar to avoid spending and hour or more looking for someone to help me. read more

Went here on a Monday night for a birthday celebration. The wait staff was friendly and accommodating, but the hostess could have been a little friendlier. A smile really makes a big difference. The whole group was impressed with their meals. I started off with the yellow and red beet salad with greens and a nicely breaded and pan fried goat cheese. It was absolutely delicious. The breading on the goat cheese was not oily and the cheese was smooth and mellow. For the entree, I had the zuppa di pesce. It was loaded with lobster, clams, muscles, scallop and shrimp. The broth was simple and nice. The only complaint is that instead of the baby shrimp, they should have used a couple of larger shrimp. The baby shrimp seemed to cheapen the dish a little. For dessert, my daughter and I shared the smores. It was a nice dessert with graham cracker crust, layer of chocolate and homemade marshmallow that was lightly torched. Although it was good, it was a tad sweet for our taste. Overall, this is an excellent restaurant with a nice cozy ambiance. It would have been even nicer with a pleasant hostess. read more

Most definitely one of the best meals I've had in a long time. My husband said that the steak was one of the best he's ever had at a restaurant. Great quality food. Pricy, but worth it! We would definitely return again. The experience: Our server was good, but I felt that we were rushed. She showed up to our table every two minutes when we first got our menus to take our orders. We kept telling her we needed more time to see everything, and yet she came back 2 minutes (if that) later while we were clearly still looking at the menus. No personalized attention, just kind of a 'take your order and go, serve, repeat' experience. We were seated in one of the rooms next to a ramp/server station where the servers were standing around. My husband and I could hear almost all of the servers conversations. It really bothered me when another server told another that one of her tables left her a $19 tip on a $150 bill, 'effing assholes. Don't come out to eat, especially on Valentine's Day if you can't afford to tip 20%'. Yes, it's definitely a low tip, but I was kind of floored being in an establishment like that, and overhearing a server calling our guests like that, pretty much 10 feet away from our table. Wow, solid restaurant. Came here on a nice lazy Sunday and strolled into the bar area. Not too busy, which was perfect for us. We were able to get situated at a high top table and ordered from the lounge menu. Service was very efficient, beer list exhaustive, they have Angry Eric on the list which is a plus. We started with a I was split between the filet mignon sandwich or a special, but settled on the sandwich. Boy, did I pick well! What a break combination. The filet was cooked perfectly, the caramelized onions were a welcomed addition, all topped with muenster cheese. What a combo. Really, a cool place. Unfortunately for my trying to be somewhat healthy Sunday, the chicken milanese resembled chicken fingers instead of a lightly breaded chicken. And it was most certainly deep fried instead of pan fried. The side of orzo and arugula was just as disappointing- water logged and lacking real flavor. My boyfriend and I visited the Mohawk House on a Monday evening. It was my first time here and we chose the Mohawk House because of the extensive craft beer selection available on draft. We decided to sit at the bar so that we could sample various beers, talk to the bartender, and eat dinner. The Mohawk House has over 50 beers on tap! We sampled various beers throughout the evening including Smuttynose Homunculus, Southern Tier Creme Brulee, Port Brewing Mongo, and Stone Vanilla Porter. The beer selection did not disappoint. Our appetizers included lobster spring rolls (just okay - light on the lobster) and boar meat ravioli (tasty homemade pasta, boar meat was interesting & unique, light cream sauce, but came out cold). For entrees we decided to go for the raw bar tower (clams, oysters, crab meat, lobster claws - delicious seafood assortment) and the burger (served on a unique pretzel brioche bun, but burger was small and it was obvious that the french fries were frozen). For dessert we sampled the s'mores stack and the creme brulee; both were okay, nothing spectacular. I liked the overall atmosphere here and loved the large selection of craft beer on tap. The food was mediocre, especially for the price. Seems like a nice place to hang out and sample beer, but I'm not dying to return for the food. read more

We had a small wedding party 7 people the bill was over $800 the food was excellent the service was very good and attentive the only problem was they charged us $40 for bringing 7 cupcakes!! One of the best beer selections in New Jersey, and definitely a national contender on that front. Some of the bartenders are knowledgeable, but some are not quite as passionate as they should be about beer considering they are serving some of the best beer around. Overall, one of my favorite places for beer, and the burgers and raw bar are really good. Edit: since writing this review I've been back many times. The pizza has improved tremendously, and I take back my previous statement. Also, the service and food in the dining room is top notch, if not a bit pricey. We went here Yesterday for Fathers Day with a larger Party of 12 adults. We made a Reservation and at the time the Female employee had asked if all members or our group were OK with a few stairs and we responded yes thinking it was just the ones to enter the Restaurant. Once we arrived they had put us up on the second floor dining room and at that point we had to find a better choice because our 80 and 81 year old Grand Parents who need assistance to walk wouldn't be able to climb those 12 to 15 set of stairs. The Dining area as a whole was about half full and being it was our Fault and Father's Day we understand what a bad situation this was for the Restaurant and their staff. The 2 PM Reservation we made wasn't required but as a 45 year Food and Beverage Hospitality Person we didn't just want to walk in. They ended up putting us in the Bar area with the high Cocktail tables and gave us menus from the Restaurant. The young male Water as he was handing out the menus announced in a Bitter Snarky way that " I'm not giving you Bar Menus or am I going to allow you to have the Half off Happy Hour Prices since your Reservation is for the Dinning Room. Once he did that he swished away only to return to take a Drink order and I was the only one who ordered an Iced Tea and everyone else just wanted Water, which is normal for our Family. I asked the Waiter for some artificial Sweeteners specifically Equal if it was available? He told me he would bring me " liquid Sweetener " from the bar and did In Fact bring me some Simple Syrup in a Rocks Glass? That defeats the purpose and I was more focused on being put at the end of a long set of Cocktail Tables right in front of the only Unisex Bathroom in the Place and having to consistently get up and move for other Patrons to use it. We did after some unfortunate back and forth with this Young Waiter got Bar Menus and placed our orders. One hour goes by and we haven't seen our Waiter? We were so Hungry at that point and thought getting our appetizers as just that would really be nice. One Hour Thirty Minutes later still no food. I had to get up go stand at the Bar where BTW I was immediately noticed by the bartender. The bartender proceeded to tell the little floor manager that was on duty that there's a customer waiting to be served and he turned around and just walked off. So I chased him down finally caught him and I asked him if there was any possibility that we could get napkins and some silverware and could he possibly check on our food. So it's an hour and 45 minutes after we placed our order and we've gone to the Hostess stand and complained about not getting our order. We were told that because we were initially supposed to be seated in the dining room that it's possibly the reason why it's taking us a little longer. Then they proceed to tell us that we were an inconvenience to them because they had to make a bunch of phone calls and rearrange a bunch of reservations because of us are calling in to make a reservation for a party of 12. Is somebody that works in the industry I completely understand there's a possibility of this happening however the dining room was empty this actually did them a favor versus making it harder for them. Once the food started to arrive the orders for wrong the food was cold burgers didn't have lettuce and tomato it was just a barrage of different things to the people in our party didn't get their food for well I am there everyone else had already started eating I would say in excess of 10 minutes. Once we did all get our food and we were eating they didn't come back and check on us ask how everything was and basically ignored us the entire time that we were in there they really made it known that they weren't happy with us by the way they acted and their attitude . Then we sat and waited for the traffic and the weather with the little slippery attitude just came out threw it on the table and turned around and walked away didn't offer us dessert and see if we wanted anything else and just basically left it at that. So then we're looking over the check we understand that you don't wanna party of six or more they automatically add your gratuity we were all OK with that but somehow someway they figured out a way to up the bill by $60 add your gratuity and then turn around deduct the $60 and then bring us the bill. When we asked them about It there response was we were going to offer you all complimentary Deserts? Wait what complementary means complementary you don't charge it on the tag it and then turn around and take it off the check what that little waiter was trying to do was bump the check up to $200 since we didn't order off of the highly expensive menu he was expecting to get a large tip so you took it upon himself to make sure that he did get a large tip. So finally after going back-and-forth with him and one other person we just left to NEVER return. read more

I went with family for Mother's Day... got to say, for everything I heard about this place, I was completely unimpressed and will not go back here unless I have a gun to my head. Even then, I would be hard pressed to go back. Likes: Salt bun was very good. I was able to get key lime mini pie without any fruit crap on it (sorry, key lime is one of those flavors that is delicate and should not have any other tastes associated with it other than graham cracker really). I had a Seafood Cobb Salad with a poached egg that I enjoyed. I should have stopped there in all honesty... Yes, the waitress was very nice and I liked her. Dislikes: I had short rib lollypop... very small portion of meat and it was awful. Tasted like roast, not short rib. As I said to my Mom, all it needed was cream of mushroom soup on it and I would have called it "Waste of Cream of Mushroom Soup" (Sidebar, my Mom used to make roast in the oven with cream of mushroom poured over it and I didn't like it that much, but I LOVE cream of mushroom soup... hence "Waste of Cream of Mushroom Soup"). So to say I didn't like my entree was an understatement. The key lime pie as was shown on the menu had some kind of drizzle stuff over it. Give me a break folks... Key Lime Pie is good on its own. Why mess it up??? My cousin's wife's cheateaubriand was the size of a hockey puck... if that. For the price it was with a seafood option, it was WAY overpriced. Ok so let's start off with the only good...the beers here are great! AND that's where I will leave it. Came here today starving and left starving!! I ordered the appetizer of mushroom toast with an egg, and the egg was "supposed" to be runny to make its own sauce but it was pretty much a hard boiled egg! Done and disappointed! For lunch I ordered the burger medium rare and it showed up well done! My best friend ordered the elk burger...guess What? How do you mess up a Pat Lafreida burger anyways? This was our first time coming here for dinner and it was excellent! For appetizers we had the tuna tartar tacos and some oysters, both delicious! For dinner we had salmon and Chilean sea bass, both equally delicious! And for dessert the cute little chocolate tart! Atmosphere was great, service was great as well.
