boiling spicy sukiyaki
Phil C.

This is still one of my local go-to spots for shabu (hot pot). I mainly dine in for lunch since it's hardly crowded, and the staff has been kind and attentive. This isn't an AYCE spot, but the quality and portions are priced reasonably. The veggies are fresh with a good variety of broths, and a selection of meats and proteins. I had the chance to try most of the broths and meats. I'll either order one type of protein or get the two-item combination, depending on how hungry I am. The veggies and rice are unlimited, and don't forget the hot drops if you like things spicy. A few of my favorite broths are the original, spicy miso, pork (tonkotsu), sukiyaki, and the fire crab. - The original broth is a great low-sodium option, letting the meat flavors shine with the ponzu and goma dare (sesame) dips. - The spicy miso and pork (tonkotsu) broths have that classic ramen broth flavor that goes well with any protein, veggie, and noodles. - The sukiyaki is great for a flavorful broth with a bit of sweetness. Ask for the raw egg for dipping as well. - The Fire Crab is a bold spicy broth with a sukiyaki base for a hint of sweetness with the heat. They add a chunk of crab and other ingredients to enhance the flavor. For proteins, I enjoy the flat iron, toro (fatty beef belly), pork belly, salmon, and New York. The meat slices are a good thickness, yet cook quickly in the hot broth. The seafood and chicken come thicker, so they take longer to cook, but it's worth it! You can also include a marinade with the meats. There are plenty of drinks to get here, like soju, beer, sake, wine, sodas, and flavored green teas. My go-to is the cold-brewed green tea or the iced lychee green tea. The dining area is bright, spacious, and clean, with some wall art to add to the minimalist decor. A few tables for groups to share broths and counter seating for solo, couples, and small groups. The counter seating allows for each diner to have a burner.

Mokkoji is still one of my favorite spots to get hot pot and the Cypress location always has tables available whenever you arrive. I find that the wait time is very short, which I really appreciate. At Mokkoji, you start out with choosing your broth for the soup base and your choice of meat. I usually get the spicy pork broth and the toro fatty belly  - it's my go to order! They will also provide a dish full of veggies, udon and a side of rice. Highly recommend this location for the great service and the short wait! There is also a lot of parking in this location too.

Mokkoji has become my favorite al a carte shabu shabu restaurant and that's because of the Cypress location. We started coming here when they first opened a couple years ago, and the Cypress location remains the best location imo. My favorite cuts are the toro fatty belly or the flat iron mokkoji cut, and always get the meat marinaded. My go to broth is the Original - it's classic and keeps the meal simple! If you're going with another person, I'd recommend the SH 32pcs option as you get more meat per dollar. Can't forget the garlic, green onions, and hot drops for your sauce! Another pro tip: extra veggies (cabbage, kale, bokchoy), rice, and broth are unlimited. The restaurant is well lit, clean, and bright, which is always a great environment to be in. The servers are all always attentive, whether you're at the bar or the table seating.

Mango green tea Pork broth Mokojii flat iron cut

Came here on a Saturday around 8pm. No wait to be seated. Tables and hight tables. Service quick. One bathroom was clean. Kpop music playing volume could be lower. Ordered the shareable flat iron mokojii cut 32 piece plenty for two people. Broth was the spicy pork broth and regular pork broth. Both tasted good the spicy was a nice kick but not too much spicy. The veggies were fresh. Veggies and rice unlimited. The mango green tea was refreshing. All In all good for a try on the expensive side. In total over 100$ for shareable broths and drinks.

Toro "Fatty Belly" w/ marinade

Mokkoji Shabu Shabu has multiple locations, and the Cypress location is super convenient with plenty of parking. It's pretty lowkey but can have a long wait on weekend evenings for dinner. We ordered Spicy Sukiyaki broth and the Toro "fatty belly" meat in the largest size to split between two people, and it was more than enough food. The meat was tender, flavorful, and a perfect choice for shabu shabu. Make sure to ask for the extra marinade topping on your beef. Note that you do have to pay an extra fee to share a meat plate. A nice touch was that at the end of the night, they gave us some free leftover lemonade that they didn't sell out of, which was very kind and appreciated.

The meat quality here is so good and the price is very fair. We got a share set of the beef toro (marinated) and it both filled us up well. They have unlimited vegetables and rice, perfect for bigger appetites. The workers are always so nice and provide good service. The restaurant is on the smaller side with mostly bar seating. I like that there isn't a long wait compared to the other locations. ig: @cravingswithcat

Split Pot with Original Broth, Brisket, Vegetables, and Dipping Sauce
Lisa Y.

Build your own personal or split pot at the table. If you're seated at the bar, you'll get your own pot, and if you're seated at the table, you may have a larger pot that's split down the middle. Important to note in case you've been to some of their other locations are are expecting to see individual pots available at each seat of the tables. I like getting their brisket. The meat is good quality, and I like getting the marinade on top which I haven't seen at other shabu shabu places! In addition to the sauce itself pour on, they also top it with grated garlic, green onions, and sesame seeds. For their broths, they charge extra for the original base which I also haven't seen at other locations. Other than that, taste of everything was good. I enjoy the variety of vegetables they provide and appreciate that you can ask for extra vegetables (kale, bok choy, cabbage only)! Their ponzu and sesame dipping sauces are tasty as well, and you can get refills on these. Plenty of parking available in this shopping plaza.

Standard fare for a hot pot chain. I got the regular miso broth with flat iron Mokkoji cut, included is a small bowl of vegetables and udon noodles with tofu. My companion got the pork broth with marinated (soy sauce, garlic, sesame oil and spring onions) Mokkoji cut. Bothe came with a small scoop of rice. They felt the broth lacked a depth of flavor, the miso was just fine although I added garlic and spring onions to it. Lots of bar seating and a few tables. Each had its own induction plate for heating the broth, you can control the temperature and length of time to heat the broth. Score dipping anything in it to cook. Service was adequate, I appreciated that the server asked if it was okay to spray clean the emptied spots as we were still eating. Sometimes the smell of the cleaning solution can be irritating. The point of view from my seat was a sign proclaiming one hour limit will be strictly enforced. Soup and meats were okay, enough for a rainy day lunch or dinner. Everything is basically an add on whether it's the type of broth or side veggies and added ramen etc... Cucumber with chili oil , extra scoop of rice and ramen noodles were the only add ons we had . Tonight's total was. $77 before tip.

Great place for hotpot. It's well ventilated so you don't smell like food after unlike kbbq. Lots of parking and the staff was very attentive. The owner was very nice and took our orders too. He said he was busy doing dishes in the back which is admirable. The beef portions were large and more than enough for four people. The seafood platter was more for two people. It had 5 shrimp, some lobster, some slices of salmon, a handful scallops and lots of onion and lemon. They had great tea and unlimited veggies. I was told this location was better because it was more modern and did not have the propane fueled portable stoves like the Garden Grive location. Definitely recommend for anyone looking for hotpot that is definitely quality and not AYCE.

Brisket

Came here to meet friends and the couple who live in Cerritos suggested this spot. Definitely a trek for me from Pasadena so was really hoping it would be good. Parking was easy it's in a large strip mall with a big lot. We had a group of 6 adults and 2 kids so we had to split up tables and definitely hard to communicate cuz the space between the 2 tables was really big. Not really ideal for larger groups . As for the food and service, pretty blah. It's not AYCE so you do order by "size". I think the portion sizes for the accompanying veggies and noodles is super tiny for what you get and it costs extra for certain broths. The meat was pretty good but nothing to write home about. Service was mediocre. We had to ask for the egg that comes with sukiyaki broth and they rarely refilled the water. For $27+ for the "small" size for brisket, definitely felt kinda ripped off. I personally would not come here again.

sukiyaki, Toro "Fatty Belly" 10pc, yuzu lemonade
Acira M.

Quality of food is amazing! The toro fatty belly is the best cut of meat in my opinion and has a lot of flavor. The sukiyaki broth was a little sweet which went so well with the dipping sauces they give you. If you like spice I would recommend one drop of the hot drops in each sauce to add a kick. The yuzu lemonade was perfectly sweet and super refreshing. They give you more than enough veggies as well and have a great variety. The only concern I have is the price. Different broths have an additional fee, the Sukiyaki was an extra $3. Although the 10pc beef comes with more than enough for one person, the sharing fee of $10 is honestly outrageous if someone were to want less meat. I would def recommend going for the weekday lunch specials since that is the better deal!

Wings have a sweet flavor, they are good but we couldn't finish

We've been looking for a nice place to eat our favorite food "shabu-shabu" we ordered the sampler for 2 and it it a lot of food but we ate jr all! it comes with many different cuts of beef, all of them were good! They season the meat so delicious with green onion and some oils, it gives it extra flavor to it. We asked for pork broth and added spicy paste which made it more flavorful. The portions are good, the rice has a tiny sweet flavor which combines good with every flavor in your mouth. Service was good too, the were kind to offer the best chooses for us. It is a casual restaurante, It is not a big location but perfect for us. We will definitely come back. What is different from other restaurants? The flavor in broth, meat, goma and ponzu sauce are good. Some other places gives you ponzu sauce with no flavor and the meat doesn't look good quality but here everything was good. I would probably recommend a little faster service but we were in no rush so we were good.

I've heard about Mokkoji for a while and a couple friends raved about it, so my husband and I decided to try it when we were craving shabu. Unlike a lot of other shabu places, Mokkoji is not all you can eat and instead, you order your meats per plate. The reasoning behind this is that they say the meat quality is higher here. Although I'd say the meat quality here is good, I wouldn't say that it was exceptionally better than some of the premium ayce places that I've been to. With that being said, I enjoyed my meal here but do not think that the quality justifies the price. The ambiance was bright and welcoming and the service here is really good. I appreciated that the person helping us offered recommendations and would check up on us every so often. The restaurant is located in a decent sized plaza with ample parking. Overall, I'd say that the shabu and experience here is pretty good, but is just overpriced for what it is.
