With Korean restaurants dominating the landscape, it's wonderful to have a nice, simple, Japanese restaurant you can call home. What I love about this place is its simple, comfortable atmosphere -- reminiscent of a retro Japanese restaurant out of the 1980s. The sake and Japanese beer selection is a decent size and the menu has enough variety that you could come back multiple times and still find something new to try. We ordered two sushi rolls and something called a Monkey Ball -- a mushroom stuffed with tuna and deep-fried. Sounds straightforward, but it was genuinely delicious and even a little elegant-looking on the plate. The sushi was well-prepared with nice presentation, and it tasted clean and vibrant -- I know everyone defaults to "fresh," and yes, you'd hope any sushi restaurant serves fresh fish, but there's a quality here that earns the word. Besides sushi, there were a lot of other created items they had on the menu that I was interested in, but I felt like sushi this evening. They're open until 1 AM, which tells you something: this place is popular and well-liked enough to keep the lights on late. I passed them 1000 times and I'm glad I stopped by. Come give them a shot. Hiyori has impressed me on fast sushi/bento meals and the food we had was solid for the price, quantity, and value. We were staying at a relatives place nearby and this was about a mile walk from our place and decided to get takeout. This store is a hidden gem and the food was very good for what we paid. We got the bulgogi beef bento and the grilled unagi bento. Both of them were very filling and came with some banchan (korean side dishes), mixed tempura, miso soup, rice, and some sashimi. The sashimi was actually very good and was pleasantly surprised that it came with the bento meal. The workers were friendly as I came in and mentioned my name for pick up. Decided to try this place with my family, mainly because it's in the same plaza as my son's kickboxing class. Place looked promising because I saw quite a bit of people waiting outside one weeknight when I happened to take a glance. Actual experience was just meh. The food is decent but price seems high for the quality. My wife and I both agreed we could've gotten better sushi at Orange Roll & Sushi for about 60% of the price. My wife and I ordered the sushi sampler and nigiri sushi. Both came with same 4 types of sushi but the nigiri sushi just added one extra piece of each. The price difference was $10. Had I known, I probably would've just ordered the sampler or some other dish. The taste was just ok. Something seemed missing, like maybe not enough vinegar or no vinegar at all on the sushi rice. This is a cute little sushi restaurant that is probably similar to the size of restaurants in Japan. Tables are limited but if you come in for a late lunch or early dinner then you'll have a good chance of getting seats. The servers and chef that we met were very nice. I was in the mood for a volcano roll while my husband ordered a teriyaki steak combo (bento box) and my son got salmon nigiri. Unfortunately, they ran out of steak so my husband had to choose something else. He ended up with spicy pork which was just okay. The tempura that the combo came with was good though. Nice and crispy. We were pleasantly surprised to see salmon and tuna sushi as part of the bento too. All in all great tasting food and a pleasant experience. These 1-3 star reviews are hilarious. And I'm glad ppl didn't like their rolls and bento boxes. This spot specifically says Specialty in live fish and tuna. Maybe people should try chef's specials? He has a white board of what they got for specials. I tried their tuna course for $70+ and I'll say that no one in Cypress area is doing what this place is doing. Side dishes weren't the best but still good enough for nice warm up round of drinking. They offer many different kinds of soju (even stronger ones that goes well on the rocks). I get the hate. Sure maybe the service isn't great and maybe this isn't a sushi roll place to go. If you want sushi roll and bento boxes, I recommend Kabuki and fish in the bottle. But if you are really trying to eat sashimi, this spot is definitely the place to be. I just hope the quality doesn't go down! Yoooooooooooooooo! Ive been coming here ever since I discovered this spot about 2 years ago and still haven't tried all the dishes yet. But so far I have tried the fish roe rice lunch special which I love the most because of all the flavor the fish roe brings when its combined with the rice and they aren't stingy with the amount of fish roe they give like some other korean seafood places. Another thing I like about the lunch special is it comes with a good amount of rice, 3 random sides, small miso soup, tempura and sashimi for $24.99. I typically always order a soft shell crab with that or another appetizer with my meal but typically I can never finish it and still have enough for a 2nd meal. I have also tried the fish roe soup once and its not as spicy as what people say on the reviews and its really wasnt to my liking so Ill stick to the fish roe rice lunch special instead. I also love the sashimi but I wish they just a but thicker for the price were paying, also love that they have some japanese rolls but wish they add more options for the rolls, the service was great and always very friendly and ambiance is your normal small korean restaurant type of vibe. The cool thing is that it's open until midnight for a late night bite. Our server was incredibly kind and very helpful throughout the meal. Candy Roll (4/5): This roll was pretty solid, it had tuna, avocado, and salmon on top with shrimp tempura within. Only thing that we noted was that the salmon had a bit of a fishy taste to it, which knocked it down a star for me. Hot Night Roll (5/5): This was the best roll we had, the spicy tuna was seasoned to perfection. So flavorful and delicious, should definitely get this roll while you're here. Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice (4/5): We loved the flavor of the spicy tuna, the only thing was that the crispy rice was a bit over cooked so it was a bit chewy and difficult to eat. Golden Tiger Roll (3.5/5): Found myself pleasantly surprised by this roll. It has cream cheese and shrimp tempura inside and crunch on top, more of a plain roll though so it wasn't too memorable. Got lunch today, very good value for the bento boxes. I'm limited to doing takeout while working from home. Called in my order for the family : uni lunch bento boxes (comes with miso soup, tempura vegetables plus shrimp, fried gyoza, fried tofu with spicy sweet sauce, sashimi ( salmon and tuna today), plus some banchan and rice. My go to dish here is the braised hamachi collar : tender fish with a salty sweet braising sauce , tofu and a mild chile. All the sides as above are included. Price wise, it's not inexpensive but also not too much, considering the amount of food included. I usually end up sharing my dish with someone else or having the rest for a second meal. Very friendly lady at the register and the sushi man always says thank you when I leave. Today, the later lunch crowd was mostly older Korean ladies. Besides the marinated thin sliced beef (very good), it included: tempura (1 shrimp,1kabocha, 1 slice sweet potato)-crispy not oily, sashimi (3 slices salmon, 2 slices red snapper), soft tofu cube deep fried topped with sweet chili sauce, potato salad, marinated raw head on shrimp, small green salad with shiso shoyu dressing, 4 pcs Calif roll, and a bowl of rice. Yeah...it was a lot. I chose the sashimi (12 pcs) lunch box. At $27 felt this was a good deal along with the high quality. 12 pc. Sashimi set included: sashimi (3 sl salmon, 3 sl red snapper, 3 sl hamachi, 3 sl seared aji (?)), 1 marinated raw head on shrimp, raw oyster on the half shell, plus the same tempura, gr salad, potato salad, soft tofu, 4 Calif roll slices as above. The sashimi served was good. Not great, but as a lunch box, this was ok. The rice was sushi rice (?) which was different. Not plain white rice. It went well with the sashimi. Just a bit different. The remaining sides were good too (potato salad, fried tofu, salad). As a Korean run place, 3 banchan served were good too (miso zucchini slices, kimchi garlic chive, sautéed mushroom with garlic). They do have add'l sushi rolls, hand rolls available. However, the lunch box was totally adequate (with portions). Dinner boxes are $3 more. We would totally return for lunch, dinner, anytime. The waiter took it back and apologized he sent the food to the wrong table. -Finally got one of the foods I ordered. -Waited another 15 minutes after my wife and I finished the one dish. Told the waiter to get my food to go since my one year old daughter started getting frustrated after behaving well for an hour and twenty minutes. Overall, terrible experience. The inside of the restaurant is cozy. It seemed like all the tables have the capacity to seat groups of four and dividers create a sense of intimacy/ privacy for your party. We ordered the salmon sushi and grilled eel lunch bentos. Both sets came with sashimi and all of the sides were delicious and made of quality ingredients. Definitely worth the price. Everything was sooooo good!!! I took my mom here for lunch today, and we had a great first experience. We arrived just after they opened at 11:30 so we were the first ones there and got seated in the corner table. I only saw two workers when we were there, one was the nice man in the front working as the server/cashier, and the other was the sushi chef who later stood at the counter preparing fish. Everyone was very nice, and we were served cold water quickly. My mom ordered the raw marinated soy sauce crab lunch box, and I got the grilled eel with rice lunch box. After ordering, our lunch sets probably took around 15-20 min to come out but we were given some banchan (white kimchi, spicy marinated peppers, burdock and carrots), miso soup, and lightly salted Korean seaweed about 5 minutes after ordering. They have bottles of chojang and soy sauce on the table for dipping your sashimi in. I thought the lunch boxes were great value for how much variety you get and reasonable prices, and everything tasted fresh and delicious! My grilled eel was a nice bouncy texture, it didn't taste like the frozen unagi from the store at all. My mom's raw marinated crab paired really well with rice and the meat was plump and sweet. I loved all the banchan and side dishes--tempura was perfectly crispy, sashimi slices were thick-cut, potato salad was creamy and mustardy, the fried tofu with sweet chili sauce reminded me of my childhood Hmart Korean fried chicken, and the California rolls and raw soy sauce marinated shrimp were good. The salad was topped with some honey bunches of oats cereal and traditional soy vinegar dressing, which was an interesting combo but not bad. The rice was well-cooked, a little soft but not mushy. We weren't able to finish everything, so we had leftovers to take home. I think Hiyori is the best sushi place I have been to in Cypress. My husband I were the first ones there for lunch on a weekday. We hadn't been to this place before, so we were excited to try something new. The service was good, no complaints. The ambiance was simple and friendly. Plenty of signage to show the specials. However, the reason I had to give 4 starts is because my husband ordered a rainbow roll that wasn't exactly great. One part of the roll tasted fresh, but another part was crunchy, like it was a bit frozen in the middle. The other sushi items we had were great! Now, they probably try to keep the fish ultra fresh to the point of almost freezing. And since we were the first customers of the day, that's probably why some of the fish hadn't completely thawed before being served. So I get it!
