Rolling hills, cool breeze, flowers, vegetable gardens dot the vast landscape, horses, alpacas ..it's almost paradise! It's a place to relax, reflect, and enjoy the scenery and oneself. Moku Roots is one of my wife's and my favorite restaurants in Maui. We've eaten here three times. First, the ambiance. There is literally nothing quite like Moku Roots' venue, high up in Upcountry Maui with a jaw-dropping view of West Maui. It is utterly spectacular. Please look at the untouched in any way photo attached. It really is that beautiful. In addition to a farm with rows of flowers, there are alpacas (yes, alpacas!) and beautiful horses grazing on the grounds. The food is vegan: much of it grown at the farm, all of it breathtakingly fresh and healthy, not to mention delicious. We had pupusas on this last visit, which were great and fresh fruit and vegetables (papaya, salad, beans, string beans, beets, carrots, etc.). Eating is outdoors, buffet style, with fresh smoothies and juices and coffee. This place is sooooo good, we've eaten here 4 times between the 2 times we've visited Maui. We were craving something different, lighter and a bit healthier during our trip and Moku Root is the exact place we were looking for. This most recent trip, we ate the same salad twice because it was that good. Their strawberry beet salad was so refreshing, tasty, and plentiful. The serving size was actually bigger than we expected and we often shared it. Their cocktails are also really unique, I recommend trying it at least once. It was nice getting something different! Lastly, love their focus on sustainability - I don't think they have anything disposable at their restaurant, including to-go containers, so you'll have to put a "deposit" of $10 down if you do to-go, but you can return it and get it back. Luckily, we were close by in Ka'anapali, but I can see this being inconvenient if you were just stopping by while you were in the area or trying to take something on your way to the airport. read more

The greens are fresh, the jalapeño cream is smooth and delicious, and the taro patty adds some nice texture. And the portion is very generous. I also ordered a chai latte to drink. It is a deliciously spicy chai with macadamia milk. One of the best I've had in awhile. I love the zero waste concept! I ordered to go, and I paid a deposit for my dishes (a tin for my meal and a jar for my drink), which I will get back when I return the dishes tomorrow. Definitely worth a try! read more

My family of 5 all showed up for Friday lunch at Moku Roots with high expectations. We were met with an amazing eating experience. As posted in the photo, the Cheezy Kale Salad with Vegan Ricotta Cheeze was an exquisite fresh salad. The Vegan Ricotta Cheeze was a yummy addition to the already masterful dish. My husband exclaimed that the Moku Grain Bowl was an explosion of flavors. He further opined that the vegan cheeze dressing was a delicious pairing with it. These first two dishes impressed us with their freshness and healthy vibes. The kids also had Taro Fingers apppetizer, a Loaded Lahaina Strong Burger, and a BLAT (vegan BLT) sandwich. All 3 of them were totally satisfied with their meal and gave us two thumbs up when we asked them how they liked it. Finally, our 3 kids wanted to have some desserts. Moku Roots offered us a couple slices of vegan lilikoi cheezecake and one slice of Java guava key lime pie. They were ecstatic to have such delicious sweetness on the beach afterwards to top off their amazing time at Airport Beach afterwards. All in all, we were super delighted to have Friday lunch at Moku Roots, and we are even more excited to stop by later on our trip for another future meal before we have to fly back home from Maui. Not a vegan but I was looking for "healthier" place to eat with lots of veggies and stumbled across this gem of a place. Not only was everything delicious but the service was friendly, quick and they are zero waste and use all veggies are local. What more could you want? The coconut noodle bowl was so packed it could almost have served 2. The fried rice in the pineapple was a bit smaller but so flavourful and the taro patty it was topped with was quite unique. Popped in for a gossipy catch up with friend over lunch and we decided to split a couple of lunch plates between us. Ordered: Special of the day: mushroom melt sandwich Zucchini Alfredo The mushroom melt sandwich was good, a little dry, and I felt needed the hot sauce to give it a bit of ooomph. Tasty. The Zuchini Alfredo was delicious, creamy and moreish, although the chunks of pumpkin were larger than bite size so needed a knife and fork to cut it up. Would definitely order it again. Wow! I'm a carnivore, but this vegan/vegetarian place was amazing! I love their No Waste philosophy, which they really live by. Everything is either reusable or natural--from their young bamboo straws to their soft cloth napkins. Their leftover containers are banana leaves! FOLLOW UP: I no longer support this restaurant because they oppose requiring the COVID vaccine. They went so far as to offer free meals to people who lost their job for choosing not to be vaccinated (https://www.instagram.com/p/CVgRgp0BKYc/), and they refuse to open indoor dining until "everyone" (including the unvaccinated) are allowed to dine inside. They say that it's because they want to be "inclusive" and "don't discriminate" but personally I think stopping someone who chooses to be unvaccinated from eating indoors is what we *should* be doing in order to stop the spread of a deadly disease. I used to come to this place at least twice on any visit to Maui because the food was so delicious, but I do not want my money to be subsidizing meals for people who choose to remain unvaccinated and espouse these dangerous anti-vax beliefs. (I understand there are some people who literally can't get the vaccine for medical reasons, that's not who I'm talking about here.) I will no longer be supporting Moku Roots. Which is a crying shame, because they have some of the best vegan food on the island. They wrap to go items in leaves. Or for the desserts you can take them in Pyrex co trainers. You pay a $5 deposit which is refunded to you when you bring them back. That helped us return the next day for a burrito! The food was great. The falafel is yuca-based and served with a delicious dill tzatziki. I got the side order of it and then we got the falafel wrap the next day. I also go the side of Buffalo cauliflower which was fresh and delicious. I got the taro burger here twice within a week during my stay on the island. The first time it tasted better and had more sauce. I was blown away by the flavor in this patty. I also ordered a brownie cupcake which was a bit underwhelming and dry but I did enjoy the richness, it was dark chocolate and not too sweet which I enjoyed. I knew going in that this was a fairly alternative restaurant--if the zero-waste, plant-based methodology behind not only their kitchen but also their atmosphere wasn't a clue, than I don't know what would be. I'm a bit more of a cosmopolitan than a hippy, though I've enjoyed my fair share of vegan food and even go to fairly significant lengths to procure for myself various kinds of vegan beef jerky on occasion. However, I was a little unprepared for just how "hip" this restaurant was. It's a counter-service restaurant, for one, and patrons are able to mill around and do as they please while they wait for their food. Outside at the table next to ours, a man sold incense sticks to a patron, perfuming the air with incense as we took our first bites of our sandwiches, making the experience reminiscent, for a moment, of a Catholic mass instead of Sunday lunch. Need to wash your hands and the lady's room is busy? Use the men's! But be careful if you do so...I was in there about thirty seconds (with the door unlocked because, hey, I'm just washing up) before a "dude" cracked open the door and got the surprise of his life. The food was...good. My dining partner got a veggie-packed sandwich complete with chimichurri and a house-made taro patty that was, admittedly, delicious. My dining partner agreed, and they very much enjoyed their meal...until that night, when they ended up with an upset stomach that lasted several days and prevented them from engaging in several planned vacation activities. I quite enjoyed my sandwich--the daily special, which included dragonfruit, macadamia nut cheese, coconut bacon, avocado, and rather delicious thick-cut whole-grain bread. It came with a side salad (which was quite lackluster) and pickles which were delicious, save for the unbearably spicy seasoning they were coated in, making them appear to be scraped from the bottom of the jar. I got a virgin cocktail, a variation of their "dragon tears" drink without the vodka, and it was absolutely beautiful and completely undrinkable. It had good composition, a delicious dragonfruit purée on the bottom of the glass, and so much lavender essence that I felt like I was drinking something borderline medicinal...but it was pretty, so that counts for something. At the end of the day, I don't regret visiting Moku Roots a try, and I would definitely give them another try. However, fellow omnivores, be wary of trying too many new things in one day, lest your stomach rebel and leave you with trouble in paradise. read more

My friends and I came here after a day snorkeling and we're super hungry. I had a bowl with coconut noodles and a bunch of other things. It was delicious and filling. So I discovered this place on out last day here and it was a jackpot... just sad I didn't discover it sooner. It is nothing but cool vibes here! The guy at the register is from Argentina and his energy was so welcoming. He didn't rush us he allowed us the time we needed as first timers ti decide what we wanted and he also helped us as he was knowledgeable about everything on the menu. When we left our resort the valet guy asked where we were goin, we told him Mimi Roots he said, "You will love it" with so much passion and conviction, and when I got here I understood exactly why! Everything about this place is just comfortable. We ordered Chai Latte, burger special and a side of Buffalo Cauliflower and a Vanilla Bean Cheesecake. My husband ordered A burger special as well with Sweet Potato wedges. We realized once the order came out that we only ordered one burger so we shared it which means I got 3 bites, but I tomost the cauliflower with the macadamia nut cheese. We got our number, a side of hot sauce and the chai latte right away. As with most vegan restaurants, the water, silverware and Napkins were self serve. Now the Napkins are not the kind you throw away they are reusable Napkins, 100% cotton, so environmentally Conscious..I love it! Also I noticed on this island macadamia nuts are their nut base... so our ranch dressing and the cheese in the burger was macadamia nut and it was delicious. I also took the liberty to look up why... and I found out the majority of the world's cultivated macadamias are grown in Hawaii. I never tried macadamia nuts when making any of my dishes that calls for cashews or almonds, but I will in moderation (macadamia nuts are expensive). Everything was delicious! We didn't leave anything for the birds (that never came around). Also when I don't see birds around an outdoor restaurant eating area than I know the people are not feeding them because they are eating their own food! After we finished our food, I went back in to get the cheesecake, they are stored in the freezer cooler in glass containers. So when you purchase it, they ask if you want it beige or after your meal. My husband said after, I could have took it before, so he put it in the refrigerator freezer behind the register and after we finished I went in and he grabbed the cheesecake out the freezer (without me asking) so I didn't have to stand in line and wait. Now for the food the dishes can be a hit or a miss. We tried the pineapple fried rice with the taro mock meat which was delicious, the Buffalo cauliflower is super yum, especially the side sauce, the jackfruit burger was tasty, however I did not enjoy the cheesecake. The coconut and turmeric were very overpowering and while the texture was on point , the flavors missed the mark. There's also a program for metallic boxes that they can use for to-go orders that is a $10 deposit and you can bring it back or re-use it at multiple restaurants throughout the island. Because it's zero waste, they didn't have anything to pack sauces in for me to take. The person helping me looked around for something I could use and a cook came up with using a used avocado shell. We got the cauliflower wrap and the bomb bowl. The cauliflower wrap was very refreshing, fresh and flavorful. Went well with the dip. The bomb bowl (red curry and pineapple rice) was disappointing. It lacked flavor. It seemed to have all the right ingredients but just wasn't tasty. We also asked for the spicy hot sauce on the side which was good for adding spice into the meal if you like higher spice levels. We walked in expecting better taste overall. Slightly underwhelmed.
