The world needs more restaurants like Moku Roots. This incredible place is 100% vegetarian/vegan and ZERO WASTE! That's right...no plastic and everything is used/reused. Their napkins are handkerchiefs, their glasses are mason jars and their to-go food is wrapped in banana leaves! This restaurant has such a welcome vibe and you can tell how much they care about their community. They have several events that take place throughout the month including a game night every Wednesday from 4 to 8 PM. My fiancé and I are visiting the island for two weeks and we've already been here twice and it's only been four days. I haven't even gotten to the food yet! The food literally melts in your mouth! I am gluten-free and vegan...is the most mouthwatering gluten-free bread you have ever had. Everything is made in house and you can tell. I can not recommend Moku Roots enough. Amazing! Super delicious. We went here for dinner and it turned out to be awesome! If you are a vegetarian or a vegan, this place is a must try on your trip to Maui. We ordered a Raw Pad Thai and a Loki Moku. Both of them 5/5. The Pad Thai had grated raw papaya and it tasted really good. The taro patty on the Loko Moku was great too - it was served in a pineapple shell. It's the first time I tried a taro patty and I loved it. Lavender lemonade was good as well. You can taste that lavender in it! The place has a zero waste policy which we appreciated. Only upside and downside is how they are SUPER sustainable which means little waste, so if you order take out make sure you have your own eating utensils because they only have wooden ones you can buy and they charge you an extra $20 for their steel to go container as a deposit you have to return. Absolutely delicious! My friend and I had at Moku Roots. I ordered the Pad Thai and she had a wrap. The cocktails were also great! So much better than the unhealthy, overpriced, dull food you get on Front street. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. We brought leftovers home and my friend's meat eating husband loved the wrap. This is now my go to place when visiting Lahaina. Next time, I am definitely trying the desserts. Veggies are fresh in it, but the "bun" is terrible. No flavor, terrible texture, no spring -- just 2 dense and flat pads of flavorlessness that isn't very effective at holding the burger fixings in. Salad had very fresh greens, but it was wayyyyyyy oversalted. Like huge mines of salt all over it, making it off-putting. The pita bread that comes with it is flat and underwhelming. We visited with a large group multiple times and between us we got to sample a significant portion of the diverse menu options, and everything was delicious. Even the carnivores among us were 100% satisfied and look forward to the next time. Flavors were good. The bowl was creative, used poached tomatoes for fish and had chock full of veggies. They have a HUGE menu, take your time, there is a lot to go through. One big issue - they used taro root for potatoes and fillers in burritos, which were not thoroughly cooked. Each bite was a surprise, either digestable, or raw. Not the best feeling in your mouth either. Ambiance: it's nice casual dining, tables inside and out. Your local regular lunch / dinner place. They have cute decor. This place was outstanding and I am so glad to see that they have reopened! The ambiance is so laid back and gives off such a cool vibe. The lengths that they go to maintain sustainable and low impact is outstanding. I really loved seeing the reusable products being utilized throughout the whole place. The food was delicious and hearty, I ordered the BLAT on GF bread and it was one of the best sandwiches I've had, the flavor was on point and the bread was probably the most delicious and light GF bread I've had. My husband ordered the Loaded Lahaina Strong Burger on the GF bun and again, outstanding burger! Everything stacked on that bun was delicious and so fresh. We also got an iced latte and Thai iced tea which were both perfect. This is the best restaurant I've ever eaten at. I'm not exaggerating. My wife and I, (long time vegans) came here a couple days ago. She got the pancakes: crispy around the edges, unbelievable sauce, nice portion. I got the omelette: incredible smoky flavor, not greasy, and the outer part (traditionally the egg part) was made of yuca and was almost dough-like... unlike any vegan omelette I've ever had! We came back last night and ordered the specials - a chili burger and and a curry dish. Both were amazing. The in-house taro burger patty is pure genius. The coconut rice that came with the curry was the freshest I've ever had. Normally I don't bother bringing my meat-eating family members to vegan/vegetarian joints, but I do not feel even one bit guilty bringing them here for some vegan food. So we'll be there again tomorrow morning before flying back to the mainland. read more
