This restaurant was recommended to us during our Maui Dragon Fruit Farm tour. It definitely lives up to its reputation as a local vegan eatery that uses fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The quality of the ingredients is definitely reflected in their food. Their OG breakfast burrito was delicious, nutritious, and a great feel-good meal. Despite not having any meat, the eggs and sweet potato provided me with enough protein and carbs to keep me full for hours after. The caramelized onions and macadamia nut aioli added a savory feel to this otherwise plain burrito. We felt great supporting a local business and didn't mind the reusable cloth napkins that echoed their sustainable practices. What a great find for vegans and non-vegans alike. read more

We dropped by Moku Roots for dinner on a Saturday night. The place was popular with locals for sure - there was a bit of a line when they opened at 6 PM. We ordered and received our food quickly, given the rush. We sat outside at one of their tables overlooking the parking lot. The vibe was kind of Hawaiian hippy, with loud-ish music playing both inside and out. Our food was all OK - they are really trying to make quality vegan cuisine. I've been here about four times and find the food very creative and the staff very helpful and friendly. They get pretty busy, so sometimes there's a wait before you're acknowledged at the counter. Or, there's a line. That means it's good though! First-timers often have questions and the staff are great about answering them. Their taro burger patties have a very good flavor, but can be a bit mushy. I kind of wish they had more 'tooth'. Still, a nice option to try. BTW, I'm not vegan, nor vegetarian, but the food here is so healthful and well thought out that I don't miss the meat. I *am* gluten-free, and that's easy for them to work with. Their merchandise (and the only reason for 4, not 5 stars) seems out of sync though. A place with such high ethics when it comes to caring about the planet and the people on it surprised me with very different ethics/values when it comes to humor. They sell t-shirts that read, "Eat More Veg'aina" in large bold print. I'm assuming they're going for vegetables/vegan food + Lahaina (?) - but the additional implications of that shirt seem in conflict with their high ethical standards in other areas. I know some people will find it delightfully funny, but why take a risk that's guaranteed to offend some people? These t-shirts are on the staff, displayed on the wall...plus, there are several items for sale alluding to testicles too. I won't be taking my younger family members there. Or, I'll order take-out for them. I don't want to have to explain the t-shirts to a 9-year-old. I'm thrilled there's a place with so many gluten-free options in Lahaina. I will be back. I was happy to find another vegan restaurant here on Maui. I was disappointed to know that the dish I had ordered was a shared dish and it was way too much for one person to finish. There was no way I was going to be able to finish this dish let alone make a dent In it. They did inform me when I was purchasing the food that they do not have any takeaway containers as they are a very environmentally conscious business, which I am super happy to hear about, but then found out how much food I was going to have leftover after I was served and had no way to take it with me as I was leaving on a plane back to Honolulu. I was told that they have tea leaves to wrap your to go food in or you could purchase a jar and get the refund once you return it which I would not be returning anytime soon since I live on Oahu. I wish they would've strongly advised me against purchasing that meal since it was just for myself. They were not very transparent about this, so be warned that certain dishes may be too much for you to eat and you will either have to take it in a jar (which costs more) or like what I did leave it behind. I felt I overpaid for the meal that I had. That being said, the dish I had was very tasty. I ordered the Alfredo pasta. I think that's what it's called but there was no pasta in it, which also was a disappointment but as I said it was still very tasty! My friend had a black bean soup which was about six dollars and I wish I had gotten that because that was really good and the price is right. Mine was about $15 or $16. I also got the pineapple cake which was delicious but again, could not finish it and was not able to take it with me. I wasn't about to have a tea leaf wrapped cake in my travel bags only to find it later smooshed and smeared throughout my bag. All together I paid about $30 including tip for everything I got. I did also get the Thai tea with coconut milk which was really good. Update* Maybe saying that I was overcharged is not correct. It's more that I was not informed, even after informing the girl taking my order that this was my first time here, so maybe instead of asking them to change the portion ask them to be more clear about the portion! read more

Came here for lunch on a Sunday day afternoon since the menu looked so amazing. Unfortunately only brunch was served, with a very limited menu. We ordered the OG burrito and the curry. We also had a brownie with a strawberry glaze on top and a turmeric shot. Both items were very tasty and we loved the brownie. They forgot about my turmeric shot until I asked someone about it and she brought it out when I was almost finished with my meal. I'd like to go back when the full menu is available which I'll probably do before we leave the island. It's too bad there isn't a big sign somewhere telling people that there is a limited menu on Sunday afternoons. This place was recommended by someone local. However, I will not be coming back here again. The rating is mainly based on my bad experience with the rude cashier Olivia (tall with black hair bob cut). Everything was ok until she asked me if I wanted my change. I told her yes. She scoffed and said wow. I know tips are customary and I always tip (when I go to dine-in restaurants where waiters/waitresses are serving me) regardless of bad service or not. But I should be given the option to decide that for myself. I should not be asked. Tips are not mandatory. What if I was down to my last $20? Is she going to make me give her the last of my money? In addition to that she gave my drinks to the wrong table. Although I knew the people at that table, I ordered those drinks and it should be given to the right table. Also, the person that ordered after me got her drink before I did. All of which I feel like was intentional because I didn't let her keep my change. As for the food, the mushroom quesadilla was really good. "This is my jam" drink and chocolate cake was good too. The loco moku had a strong turmeric flavor and the Reuben sandwich was kind of salty for my liking. The restaurant itself is very nice with seatings inside and outside. I REALLY wanted to love this place. Their whole zero waste movement, their vegan menu, and the farm to table idea, all align with my values. Based upon that, I want to give them 1000 stars. I'm so grateful that this place opened and can hopefully influence not only their customer, but other businesses to also follow in their foot steps. Okay, now let's cut to the chase. If it weren't for the idea behind this place, I might give it a 3, BUT there's hope to improve. 1. The portions are HUGE! Which is AMAZING, if the girl had let us know when we ordered 4 meals, when we could have shared one. I'm sure most people assume health restaurants serve extremely small portions and over order. For a restaurant that wants to lessen food waste, they might want to let their customers know the food are sharing portions. 2. After ordering, our food took an EXTREMELY long time to get to us. There were a lot of people working there, and not very many customers. After we finished, they also took an extra 10 minuets to wrap our food. They're inefficient on the way they work. Very nice staff, just need to tighten up their routine/ communication. Our wrapped food sat on the counter for 5+ minuets before someone realized and brought it out to us. 3. The order was wrong. When we ordered the kale salad, they said they were out of kale. Which sucks, but I settled for butter lettuce. I asked for no nuts, and my salad came out with.....a ton of nuts! 4. After our meal came out, only 3 items came. I assumed they forgot our last order. We didn't want it anyways, we were SO full, and it had been exactly 17 minuets since they brought our meal out. I went to the counter to just get a refund on the sushi, since it never came out. She said they're bringing it out now. This restaurant is a counter-order restaurant, which most people are in and out of in 15-30 minuets, they're just extremely slow. If they didn't start making sushi until AFTER our entire meal was over, they should have let us know or asked if we still wanted it. THE FOOD: Kale and broccoli salad: sans kale. I can't really judge because they were out of kale and it had a ton of nuts which I asked for none. The dressing is good, I would probably order it again, but it's nothing special. Soup of the day: I have no idea what we were eating, but this slightly spicy soup was AMAZING! It is full of flavor, and sooo tasty. 10/10 for the soup! Sushi: Boring, poorly wrapped, too much rice. Vegan sushi is all my dreams. I'm obsessed with it. I know it's not a sushi restaurant, but this guys sushi making skills need some brushing up. I'll post a photo. This is an EASY fix though! Just practice the sushi rolling and add some more flavor! Falafel salad: Falafels are moist! Yay! This salad is packed with flavor! My man liked his salad! Went here twice on our Maui trip. The food is great, I am not vegan but my mother is. We tried so many things in the menu. My favorite thing was the lavender cocktail they have. Probably the best cocktail I've ever had in my life. I love love loved the coconut bacon omg I could eat that all day. The char and Smokey flavor was to die and the texture. The veggie sandwich was dry and not that great, the "fries" were like just breakfast potatoes and they should call them that. Service, well there isn't really any. You order and pay at the counter they drop off food and that's it. Nobody checks on you... and when we are at night it was pretty dark on the patio. Still cute vibes but they should hang some lights or something I had to have my flash on phone so I could see the beautiful food. The snickers cheesecake I could live with out but the coconut cheese cake.... so great. The no waste idea is also super cool. This was our last meal in maui and we wanted to have something lighter, so why not go vegetarian. Btw we are not vegetarian, we are meat eaters who like to have vegetarian meals once a week. We haven't eaten many veggies this trip so let's try a place focused on locally sourced veggies and is focused on zero waste. Everything was reusable, even the napkins! They have a decent outdoor space so you dont have to eat it to go which was nice. We got the moco bowl, the bomb curry, baked potato wedges, lemon cake and Thai iced tea. Portion sizes were huge, it was packed with veggies vs being heavy on grains and lettuce as fillers which was really appreciated. They were true vegetarian, there were no faux meat/seitan proteins. The best thing was the potato wedges because their hotsauce is really good and the potatoes were well seasoned. If you are looking to detox from your heavy meat diet, this is the spot. Outside of the portion size and mission which are tops, everything else was ok. Bomb curry was mild in flavor and the mocu bowl had a nice variety of veggies but again lacked in flavor. The Thai iced tea was good, it was the first time in a while my wife was able to have a Thai iced tea. The lemon cake was good but it is pricey for a small slice. read more

I came here after eating at Merrimans where as a vegetarian I got a measly three falafel pieces for $42....I was still hungry. Moku roots saved the day!!! I got the falafel wrap and the moku bowl. The falafel wrap is the best falafel I've ever had!!!!! (ok fine, i did like the falafel at merrimans...but check out my review for them for why theyre not the best) The texture of the falafel is so perfectly crisp and soft, I think they may use tarot in the falafel. I wish all places made their falafel this good! The veggies were super fresh and tasty in the wrap and the vegan sauces were yummy too. I bought initially only one wrap, but after my bf had a bite...he went in to get another one-- it's delicious!! I got the moku bowl because I wanted to feel alive from the freshness, and boy the veggies were fresh even the next day. We've been looking for a great vegan place since arriving in Lahaina, and we finally found it! Moku Roots is different from many vegan restaurants in that, instead of using TVP and other "fake" meats, they re-imagine meat offerings using plant products. Best of all, their food is locally sourced, their preparation healthy (you won't find anything deep-fried), and their practices are sustainable. We tried three different menu items and they all were delicious. Service was friendly and efficient. Food and service was great! I love the down to earth atmosphere. Ample parking in the huge shopping center lot. I love how "green" they are. They use cloth napkins and tea leaves for takeout food. Whenever I'm on the West Side I stop at Moku Rootz for yummy, feel-good, tasty, vegetarian food! The falafel wrap is AMAZING!! Yesterday I tried the burger of the day. I don't remember what was all on it, but it was HEAVENLY!! I know it had some sort or pumpkin and cranberry. Freaking incredible and huge!! I've also had the veggie burrito- YUM! The kambuchas are amazing, too, with edible flowers frozen in the ice cubes! (Great touch!) It's pricey, but its worth the quality & love put into the food & experience. Highly recommend! read more
