It's not often you can go to one place to get your groceries as well as supplies for your home improvement projects, but Mollie Stone's offers that via an attached Ace's hardware section. We came in looking for some Mulay's meatballs - unfortunately they didn't carry the meatballs here but we purchased some of the brand's italian sausage which was delicious with some baked ziti. We also ended up making impromptu purchases with a couple of boxes of Ted Lasso's "Biscuits with the Boss" that they smartly have placed near the cash registers - the marketing got us. Being so close to home, Mollie Stone's remains to be my go-to spot whenever I need a quick lunch or breakfast English muffin sandwich. Since my last review, the prices have been raised for a majority of their sandwiches. Only a couple dollars though. I usually get a chicken breast sandwich on ciabatta roll, and it's mayo, pesto, and veggies. I like to get it toasted for that extra crunch. For $11.99 without cheese, it's a tasty and refreshing sandwich. With the increased pricing, I started to look at their prepared sandwiches, and honestly paying a little extra for a fresh made sandwich is the move (as long as there isn't a huge wait) I recently tried their chicken salad croissant sandwich, got it toasted, and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It was simple, not overly mayo'd, thick pieces of chicken, toasted. Solid quick lunch for $9.99 If you go early enough they have these premade breakfast sandwiches. The chorizo and egg one on the English muffin is my favorite. I've grabbed these on multiple occasions and a perfect sized breakfast for when I'm too lazy to make it myself. Our hotel was literally 700 yards down from Mollie Stone's, which stood out as the lone supermarket/ grocery store in this shopping center full of restaurants. So we walked in looking for a juice bar or bottled cold pressed juices. The store did not have a fresh juice bar but did have a cold-pressed juice section. The initial reaction was sticker shock as the identical juices were $1.50 more per 12 oz bottle than Whole Foods. ( which also usually has some on sale). Walked over to the deli to get some hummus and some quinoa and again - not much variety but really pricey. The packages of chocolate too were on sale for $10 per package. Just seemed really steep. I was curious as this store in zip code 94066 iin San Bruno, California is not considered a wealthy or luxury area compared to Menlo Park and other adjacent acres in SF with higher per capita incomes and median single family home prices. Lastly we were 9 in the express line with one other cashier handling 5 customers with full carts. This store does have an Ace Hardware store inside and a Pete's Coffee plus beautiful fresh flowers. We did end up going to a Lucky Market the next day for the usual - water, veggies, fruits and ice cream, This will be an emergency go to but not a frequent or regular grocery run for me. read more

You can shop there for years without realizing it's a small regional chain rather than a one-off local market. Add to that the fact that many people aren't California locals, and Molly Stone's becomes almost invisible as a brand--despite being an anchor wherever it lands. And that's the thing: their locations are strategic to a fault. Molly Stone's consistently positions itself where it can be the only traditional grocery option. San Bruno, Sausalito--places where if you search "grocery store near me," Molly Stone's is often the only real answer. They don't compete head-to-head with Nugget, Safeway, or Trader Joe's the way those stores compete with each other. They quietly monopolize convenience. From a business standpoint? Smart. From a consumer standpoint? Complicated. I did some research after a recent visit, and the pricing model is what really made things click. There was an article describing a product sold to Nugget, Trader Joe's, Safeway, and Molly Stone's at the same wholesale cost--around $7. Safeway sold it for ~$12. Nugget for ~$14. Molly Stone's? $22. That's not a premium--it's a statement. At that margin, the value proposition has to be airtight: exceptional staffing, elevated quality, and an experience that clearly justifies the price. And that's where, for me, Molly Stone's falls short. Yes, the stores are beautiful. Yes, the footprint is large. Yes, there's a sense of "luxury grocery." But the execution doesn't match the markup. The stores are consistently understaffed. Employees often seem stressed or disengaged. I've had multiple uncomfortable interactions, including outright rude ones at the San Bruno location. Compare that to Nugget--where staffing is abundant, live stations are running, and employees genuinely seem happy to be there. Nugget promotes internally, invests in people, and it shows. Even from a product standpoint, Nugget feels more tuned in. They're early adopters. They curate. They take risks. There was a long stretch where Nugget and Trader Joe's carried products Molly Stone's didn't--despite Molly Stone's charging significantly more across the board. This morning, I spent $30 at Molly Stone's hot bar on a modest breakfast. It wasn't bad--but it wasn't $30 good. At Nugget, I'd likely pay less and feel just as confident about quality, freshness, and food safety. And here's the bigger picture: in California, most grocery stores are buying from the same purveyors. Transportation costs are high. Supplier pools are limited. If 60% of the average grocery basket is identical across stores, then price differences should reflect labor, care, and service--not opportunistic markups. Nugget spreads costs thoughtfully. Slightly higher prices make sense when you factor in staffing, quality control, and smaller buying power. Molly Stone's, on the other hand, concentrates margin at the shelf--and seems to expect customers not to notice. Once you do notice, it's hard to unsee. Molly Stone's is convenient. It's polished. It's strategically placed. But at this point, I'd rather drive a little farther and spend my money somewhere that feels fair--to customers and employees. And honestly? If I'm choosing between Molly Stone's and Safeway these days, I'm not sure Molly Stone's is winning anymore. Bottom line: Beautiful stores. Smart locations. Hilariously awful experience. I walked in to order a sandwich from the deli. I asked for a menu item that was listed on the screen. He looked at the menu along with me and acted like he had no idea what it was. He asked a nearby coworker if he knew and he said that it would be "in the book"... My husband and I are regular shoppers of Mollie Stone's at Bayhill Shopping Center. I would like to ask other customers. Do you experience how COLD the store is when shopping in the AM? Even when we have breakfast from their buffet and coffee. We sit at the tables where the Peet's Coffee is located. The COLD makes the area so uncomfortable. I've noticed how all the store employees, Peet's employees and us customers all are wearing jackets. It's an unpleasant experience! Used to be my favorite grocery store. Now the prices don't match the quality. Despite more expensive prices than even the nicest grocery stores in Marin, the food isn't fresh. $34 for a half small container of dried apricots? Really? They aren't even organic. Maybe they figure people won't notice when they grab a small container of apricots to go with their cheese plates? The cakes often taste old and dry. A take and bake pizza I got had fuzzy mold growing on it. An outrageously priced container of fruit had fermenting cantaloupe. Both not expired. The employees are nice and are quickly willing to swap poor quality food when that happens, but an extra trip back to swap rotting food is not what you expect for the prices. They penny pinch by moving the bacon from the hot bar so they could charge more since it's lighter. Now you have to ask for it at the hot bar and it's more expensive than the rest of the breakfast hot bar. Gotta make sure to squeeze every cent they can out of their customers. When you go here just know you're gonna spend some money. This isn't your save mart or Safeway type of store. This store has a grocery store, a deli that offers a wide variety, and the other half of it has tools, grills, and any tool you need for your home or backyard. But I came here and went to the deli and my goodness was I blown away. I got 2 custom sandwich's. Again I knew I was gonna spend some money for good quality and didn't mind. I got 1 sandwich with waygu, roast beef and turkey with spinach tomato and cucumber with spicy mustard and garlic pesto. The 2nd sandwich was a tri tip sandwich both were warm. It's a bright, open airy spartan clean store with lots of different, varied sections, e.g. florist, bakery, deli, and the usual dairy, breads, etc. I had such high hopes for this store, but man oh man, the produce needs a serous upgrade and/or vendor. We bought some organic ambrosia apples and one bite after I got home, it was inedible and I threw out the entire thing--though crispy and promising from the exterior, it was bizarrely a mushy mess inside, and insipid as hell ... just yuck. What a waste--I didn't have the receipt, and nor was it worth the trouble to hoof it all the way back there for a refund or exchange. It's experiences like this that makes me not go back. On the positive side, Mollie Stones now has this partnership with of all places, Ace Hardware store ... whaaaat? It's charming in an offbeat sorta way. I used to love to shop there, find good food and interesting gifts and small items that were unique The deli always had a wait because they were so popular. DO NOT go to the Deli. What they did to our sandwiches today makes me think they have never eaten a sandwich much less been trained on how to make them, ironically, the lunch meats were good but everything else was just dumped on there and there's so much mayo and mustard...it was just??? Mollie Stones Bayhill is the closest market to my home, and I have been shopping here since I was a child...before it was Mollie Stones. It used to be a decent market. I keep having to return food items because they are bad. I have complained there to management twice previously. Today I stopped just for milk, and it is totally spoiled, came out thick. I'll have to return it tomorrow early before work. Besides the bad quality of food... in the produce section you will find bad moldy or rotten veggies... I won't buy them, or steam table food that should be in the trash, to Mollie Stones prepared food that I return because it's too old to eat, the prices are price gouging high. Way higher than other stores. The cashiers are sweet, but I keep having to return stuff, and pay high prices for the privilege. Which is why I don't shop there often... just to pick up some milk, like I made the mistake of doing today. While they have an excellent selection of GF food, you'll never find it because the products are hidden, or "cut in" with non-GF products. You need to spend your time reading every single label to figure out if you can or cannot eat something. Now let's say you are craving a specific product, like GF tea cookies? You'll never find them. Even with two managers walking the aisles with me, it took literally half an hour to find a product that I knew that they carried because InstaCart could deliver it to me. I purchased some fresh wild caught Halibut for $41.11 at the meat and seafood counter and when I went to cook it it wss bad, it smelled terrible. I called the store and they wouldn't exchange it because I didn't have my receipt but I do have it in the same wrapping in which I purchased it with the date, the weight and the amount. I've been buying my fish there for 2 years and never had problems until today. Be careful of buying fish here. I will no longer be shopping here any more, I'm going to Lunardis from now on. This place used to have the BEST deli sandwiches They've always been premium priced but it was worth the extra $$$. Not anymore. The last several visits I've been getting sandwiches with the stingiest amount of filling. I usually get the vegetarian and it used to be loaded but lately its been pathetic. I went to exchange four Co2 canisters for my Soda Stream. It is usually $15.99 per exchanged canister. However yesterday, July 3rd, 2020, Mollie Stones is now charging $25.99 per canister exchange....A $10 per canister increase!!! That makes the Soda Stream WAY more expensive per ounce of carbonated water than just buying cans or bottles of carbonated water. Mollie Stones robbed me for $104 plus tax for Co2 that is normally $60. NEVER AGAIN!!! When I brought it to the employees attention that the canisters were the price of buying new canisters, they said they knew that Mollie Stones had raised their price $10 per canister to $25.99 and were waiting for me to say something. Mollie Stone's nestled in San bruno's Bayhill Shopping Center is a great option if you are looking for an upgrade to your more traditional grocery stores. They do a great job in making this grocery store very eye catching, from the colorful produce department to the hot bar serving a very diverse variety of food. The meat department has very knowledgeable butchers with what I would say very fresh looking cuts. This location also offers 2 things most grocery stores don't 1) Pete's Coffee & 2) Ace Hardware I really love that they have a Pete's here I honestly prefer the coffee here over a Starbucks. Ace Hardware is also a great addition to the store I find myself always finding something I didn't think I needed whenever I walk down the ace aisles. All in all this store is really nice, it is on the more expensive side. But I guess your paying for the Molly's experience and the quality of the food especially the produce. Supposedly they have a buyer who goes every morning to SFO produce terminal and hand picks the produce. But from what I've noticed they definitely have nicer looking fruits and veggies. This store is expensive and charges more than most stores. Feels like price gouging. I do shop at MS for some items. I find the cashiers unfriendly, particularly one Caucasian lady. If you need to return an item ( i typically do not do and have not in 20+ years of shopping at MS (even my adult children went to Mollyland when little --that is how far back I go shopping at MS). I did feel like an item I recently purchased, last week and that was expensive and (considering high food prices) I felt I needed to return. I had to speak to the manager, who was very rude and questioned me like I was on the witness stand. He did not want to identify himself but I insisted and after three requests, he finally said his name. I came in and the cashier gave me the third degree as well. Thank heavens, we've got tickets for the show at Stern Grove in the City and Gaby's Molly Stones sandwiches are The Bomb! A great picnic is guaranteed. How so great? (1) Gaby WORKS hard, she LAYERS the meat and cheese: for the Italian combo, she puts on Mortadelo, then salami, then more Mortadelo, then more salami and provolone throughout. That way the flavors are mixed, it doesn't taste like a slab of bologna on top of a slab of salami. Then she cut the sandwiches in half and wrapped each half separately, so would work at a picnic, fantastic. (2) Gaby KNOWS! When I first came in, I asked for an Italian combo, and she delivered. I felt like I was a North Beach in the city, only it was better than most! (3) Gaby is NICE and she CARES: She makes a point of getting to know her regular customers and looks out for them. This place doesn't represent the brand well at all. I was shopping here with family and I was planning on purchasing rye bread but all of the bread on the shelf "best if used by" date was yesterday. I felt irritated but nothing was incendiary...yet. I looked at alternative choices and the next option I reached for had mold on it. I was thoroughly disgusted and at the register, I told the cashier and there was no response. He just checked me out and then asked if I wanted the receipt in the bag. Funny enough, I get home and I learn my family has also shared a similar experience when purchasing cheese. She brought it to the staff and they just ok and scurried away with the moldy cheese. Mollie stones, with their premium prices, is supposed to be a quaint expensive grocery store with premier service. The service I experienced today ensures I won't be planning another visit.
