It's so cute! And charming. And very old-fashioned. When I walked in, I didn't immediately spot anything in the place that didn't exist in the 1980s or '90s at the very latest. Yes, the credit-card reader is modern, but I mean looking at the walls, the coffeemakers, the showcases of donuts. The sight and smell transported me instantly to my childhood, and my dad was asking five-year-old John S. whether he wanted a cake donut with pink frosting and rainbow "sprinklies" or donut holes instead. (At that age, I always opted for the donut holes.) The prices are from now, but the selection is amazing. I think I bought three or four donuts. I ate one in my car in the parking lot, and saved the rest for later. They were delicious fresh and a day old and a few days old and refrigerator cold. They have their own parking lot, and the place is tiny, so I can't imagine parking would ever be a problem. This might have been a four-star review back in the day solely because there used to be so many donut places that weren't ripoffs with super friendly employees. These employees are nice but not eager and sweet like many donut- and ice-cream-shop employees used to be. But it's open 24/7, and who can beat that in a suburban area with very easy freeway access from SFO and either the 101 or the 280? Came here the other to satisfy a late night doughnut craving. Normally I get excited about the smell of doughnuts but when I stepped out the car and walk inside, nothing. What didn't sit well with me was I ordered one sugar twist donut, and not even a minute later she tossed the rest of that tray right in front of me. Why even sell it to me if it's deemed bad enough to toss. But I bought it anyway just to see. Lo and behold, it was stale and a little hard. Makes me think they just want my money and don't care about quality. I would rather them warn me they're going to be tossed instead of selling me one THEN tossing it. I did however enjoy the cinnamon roll after I microwaved it the next day for about 10 seconds. Even then, I'm wondering how long it was sitting out for before they would have tossed it. Then again, late night probably isn't the ideal time to get a fresh batch of donuts. Definitely one of my favorite donut shops because everything is made fresh and open 24/7. My favorite donut is definitely the coconut crumble, it's so soft and moist with a slightly crunch exterior due to the coconut shreds. Every time I come here, that's a must. They also have coffee and tea for anyone that's tired, not craving any donuts. There's usually one or two people working here, so there's never a wait to get your donut cravings in. The donut holes with fillings are also another favorite here, either plane or filled with custard topped with maple glaze. Recently, I saw they now have churros here!! After dinner, we dropped by to pick up some donuts for some friends and a few for ourselves. Donuts are always being made, so they're pretty fresh. Better than some other donut shops that don't have that many customers and donuts just sit there all day. I believe the place has changed hands again. I stopped in last Saturday, I do this for my Mom every two or three months. If you go after 2:00 PM they have fresh doughnuts just made. I noticed that the guy's making doughnut's in the back were of Asian origin and either the owner or Manager overseeing the lady at the front was also Asian. The people that bought it from the original owners and bought the name and recipes, were of Latin origin. I wasn't impressed of how dirty the parking lot was and the inside of the store. The tight little counter to the far left where they sell cookies was being used as a lottery counter with new machines. I saw the guy making the doughnuts eating a food item while he was working on the doughnuts, so that kind of bothered me a bit. My Mom loves there glazed buttermilk doughnuts. They were fresh, but didn't taste the same, so I thought. I guess we will have to wait for some of the locals, that frequent more often, to chime in and see what they think. My family has been coming here since 1975. I still remember the ladies behind the counter well dressed in uniforms, the smell of fresh coffee and outside you could smell the doughnuts being made. Even the outside of this donut shop looks classic with a mural on the outside and lots of regulars posted in the front just chit chatting and having coffee & donuts. I noticed they also have churros which is unique. I came for their apple fritter in which the size was huge. It's pretty crunchy on the outside with the dough being regular in the inside. I didn't taste any apple bites, just the plain cinnamon fritter. It wasn't bad but it's not on my top list of apple fritters. My wife and I had better from other places. Ube cake had decent ube flavor, and the apple fritter was delicious but too sweet. Crispy outsides and soft inside, glazed twist was soft and fluffy, delicious. Unfortunately, it was quite late and they had already sold out of apple fritters, but I did try a buttermilk bar and I think it was probably one of the best that I've ever had. Many places that make buttermilk bars often end up with something super dry that really requires coffee or a beverage to pair, but the Rolling Pin buttermilk bar was so moist all throughout and wasn't overly sweet (as far as donuts go).
