I can't believe I haven't been here, but I can finally say I have been to Momma Gs! With the original Momma Goldberg's opening in 1976 in Auburn, this location of the popular franchise is located right on 18th St South across from Homewood Toy & Hobby and right next door to O'Henry's Coffee. MG's has all the qualities of a quaint little hometown eatery with it's "wood" floors and paneling on the walls. Space is a premium inside with only about 8 small tables scattered throughout. On one wall is a self service soda/tea/condiment area. One interesting note was the disposable cutlery. Each one of the plastic forks, knives and spoons were individually packaged. Never seen that before (yes I need to get out more often). The opposite wall is littered with local band posters and ads giving you a nice college bar feel. There's a couple of tables right outside when the weather allows, but you que to place your order, pay, grab your liquid refreshment, have a seat and wait for you name to be called. If you're in the mood you can even stand close to the line and "watch" how they make their famous Nachos! I did. It's basically a layer of Doritos chips on foil with pepper jack cheese on top, then jalapenos and then the final step... the entire ensemble is steamed in the same steamer that warms their sandwiches. This nicely spreads the cheese and softens the Doritos giving the chips a softer but still retaining that nice crunch. The dish is so simple, yet delectable! Vasha ordered a side of their famous Nachos so I got to taste and it was as good as Vasha hyped it to me! He also got one of his favorite go-tos the Turkey Delite. The sliced turkey with mozarella on a honey wheat hoagie looked pretty good. I was in the mood for and ordered their Chicken Salad sandwich. Their own unique homemade chicken salad strays from what I would consider a "traditional" chicken salad, but I admire that they made it their own with chicken cut into cubes instead of shredded. Add American cheese, shredded lettuce, fresh tomatoes in a grilled roll and you got yourself a contender! The side salad I got was a sandwich box half of shredded lettuce, shredded cheese, tomatoes, red onions and croutons was on par. Their menu boasts a few other sandwiches that I would love to try like the Momma's Love (roast beef) and Pastrama Momma. Looking forward to returning soon. read more

I wasn't really a fan of Momma Goldberg's. However, it was packed when I got there. The location is very small so we weren't sure if there would even be a seat available for us. Luckily one opened up. The person who took our order wasn't rude but he wasn't friendly. Not a problem but noted. I felt very rushed picking my sandwhich even though there wasn't anyone behind me. You should definitely know what you want before you get in line. We got our food and they messed up my friends order so we had to wait for them to correct it. You usually go up and grab your food but she was nice enough to bring it out to us. The sandwiches are pretty small. I thought I saw a soup option online but that wasn't an option in person. read more

While nothing compares to the original Momma G's in Auburn, sometimes you just have to have a Momma G's sandwich. We ordered a Cuban and a Reuben and split with each other. We both agreed that the Reuben was better, but that may have just been our overall preference. As the one who's eaten Cubans more, I kind of assumed it would be on Cuban bread, but the softer bread wasn't terrible. Just not a classic Cuban. Hard to go wrong with any of their sandwiches, though. Nice to see it freshly made to order. We chose a high-top table by the door. I think we both just about put our drinks in our laps because the table wasn't sitting flat. After the second time, I was able to rotate the table a little to almost eliminate the table rocking. The ceiling tiles with all the signatures are pretty cool, and we spent a few minutes looking at the dates and searching for the oldest we could find. In general, though, I hate trying to do much of anything in this area of Homewood. It's always ridiculously hard to find a parking space, I guess I just didn't expect it midday during the week. It was actually a little later (after 1) so even more surprised parking was a pain. So if you want to walk around for a while it may be worth it, but just to pop in for lunch it's a little more of a task. read more

Food and service was horrible experience. Was next person in line and the 3 girls at the front had me wait over 5 minutes to order which I get isn't a big deal. Then while I was ordering the girl said why do people keeping coming in there's a storm coming. A storm that isn't coming for another few hours. Then I get my food and come home. They left out my caeser wrap. The mommas love sand which was stuck to the wrapper and I had to spit it out because everything tasted weird. The nachos were good as always but between the service and leaving out the wrap and the sandwich not tasting good I had to let the people know. read more

I stopped in on a Sunday around 1 to grab a sandwich after running several errands. They weren't very busy at that time, but I noticed it took almost 20 minutes for 1 sandwich and some nachos. In addition, the CO2 was out for the soda machine so their drink options were limited to tea for those who opted to get a drink. It's a small shop and does not offer a lot of sitting area for those who want to eat inside. I would recommend trying to find a spot outside if weather permits, or maybe grabbing a bite to go. Parking in this area is also somewhat of a hit or miss when it comes to 18th street, so that can be frustrating if you're in the area solely for lunch. I gave 4 stars because of the length of time to wait for my food, which was also somewhat underwhelming. read more

My wife and I were waiting with our children and they took our order very last we were the very last folks waiting in a lunch rush and they took at least 8-10 other orders ahead of ours and we waited at least an hour for sandwiches and nachos . Good Food but Nasty Restaurant! Food was OK but staff is the laziest I've ever seen. Restaurant was filthy: Chips, cheese, sauces all over the floor, tables and seats in the dining area. Garbage overflowing. No garbage bags in bathroom can, just filling it up with trash. Out of towels in bathroom. Front door says open using paper towels, but haven't been towels but never any there when I've been. I have never seen staff out from behind counter. Never. Not one. We ate late and not one customer came in during the hour we were there, but staff all disappeared into the back while front was a disaster. Decided to give this place a try today despite the wishy washy reviews. Ordered a veggie sandwich with provolone on sourdough to go. Got home and there was no cheese on my sandwich, and the "sourdough" was actually just flimsy and lightweight white bread. A $10 sandwich too. Waste of time and money. Don't go here. read more

Momma's is what it is! They have a variety of different sandwiches and wraps. Tonight we got the beef and cheese & a grilled chicken cesar wrap. The wrap was good. It had a lot of chicken so it over powered the other ingredients that were in the wrap. It was okay! They also have nachos for $3.21! By nachos, I mean Doritos covered in cheese. The atmosphere is cool. They let their customers write on the ceiling tiles, which is really neat. Also their staff is top notch. The place was really clean as well! read more

Two of us wanted cheap dinner on a Sunday evening. That right there limits your options. Thankfully Momma Goldberg's came to the rescue. You have to keep in mind that you aren't getting mindblowing sandwiches here, just know that. But they are pretty inexpensive; my beef and cheese was $5.49 with tax. The nachos were popular since it seemed like everyone was getting them, some with jalapenos, some without. The employees appear to be stoned high schoolers. The music was bizarre, some kind of electronic dance music. This isn't a club! That music certainly doesn't mesh well with the baseball highlights that were playing on two TVs. Cleanliness seemed okay, though the poor hardwood floor had seen better days. One employee did use a gloved hand to handle my credit card, hmm. read more

My first Mama G's experiences were in Auburn, which may have made it more difficult to love this location. This location seemed like any other chain sandwhich restaurant, nothing original to recreate the University feel. As far as my sandwhich (the pastrama mama) and my momas nachos (Doritos topped with white cheese and jalapeños) they were excellent!! Unfortunately my wife chose a salad (maybe that's our fault with it being a sandwhich place!) but, it was a little too coated with dressing and nothing to rave about. This is such a popular franchise in not only this Soho square location in Homewood, and I just can't understand the hype with it. I went with my friend one night after we shopped in a few boutiques. The staff was very friendly, and they basically let my friend Tina watch them make her sandwich since she is particular about cheese. I had ordered the Momma's nachos and a drink. The Momma's nachos are Dorito's smothered in hot pepper cheese and jalapenos. I'm a cheese lover, and I love Dorito's but think this was a little too much salt. Overall I just can't justify paying $7 for nachos and a drink. It's a cool place, and I may come back and try their other menu items. read more

I've had the pleasure of dining at the original Mamma G's in Auburn for many years and owe my first full cup set to them. I used to try different menu items but over the years I found myself always ordering my tried and true - Mamma's Love and Mamma's Nachos. I've honestly forgotten how other items taste. I'm not sure if it's nostalgia that keeps me coming or if that combo really is as crave worthy as I think it is (I mean, something kept me coming back to begin with). Specifics about this shop. This particular store is not very well kept. The dining area is always a wreck. It's also one of the slowest Mamma G's I've been to despite having one of the largest crews I've seen. At first I thought this was just because of how busy this shop is, but there have been too many times I've eaten here where the store is almost empty with 5 workers huddled around a phone behind the counter watching something while tables are kept sticky and trashed, ice remains spilled on the floor, my sandwich has yet to be made, and I'm wiping a table with a napkin to try and find a decent spot to sit. Every time I order a Mamma's Love from here, it's always served with a small side of disappointment. The sandwich is supposed to be steamed through until soft and warm. But each time I get my order, the outside is steamed but inside is ice cold. The Mamma's Nachos are usually good (but it's hard to mess up Doritos and pepper jack cheese with jalapeños!). I'm giving this store 3 stars. I keep coming back because I still get the Mamma's Love and Nachos itch. I just hate always being disappointed with the service and ultimately with the execution of one of my favorite collegiate meals. read more

In a pinch this is the perfect sandwich place. They are cheap and get you in and out quickly. No need to get intimidated by the menu the Momma's Love is and will always be the best sandwich on the menu. They have salads and other items but no need to stray from the best. If you want some chips go for it they have them but you really must upgrade to the nachos. With or without jalapenos it really doesn't matter they altogether rule. The quick explanation says it all. Came here on Halloween and tried the grilled chicken nachos + the "Mommas Love" sub. The sub was great and was worth coming back. The nachos, on the other hand, were the worst excuse for nachos I've ever seen in my life. These so called "grilled chicken nachos" consisted of Soggy Dorito chips, cold cheese stuck to the wax paper, and uncooked squares of subway grilled chicken. One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had when I generally expected this place to be good considering how many people were inside. I am disgusted. read more

The sandwiches were pretty small for what I'm used to, but they are cheap so you could buy 2 for the same price as a regular footlong at quiznos or something like that. Points off for not having whole pickles, you order a whole pickle it's 4 quarter slices. Do get the nachos if you are hungry. It's like poutine with doritos.
