This place is so unassuming. I used to look at it and thought it was a fried fish grease joint. How wrong i was. My oldest daughter turned me onto mama o's as a healthy place for lunch. It is one of our go to restaurants on the lunch rotation. Prices are reasonable, food is simple. When you start with high quslity ingredients and fish simple is better. Simple is flavorful too. You can have fish prepared how you want. We choose grilled and the even let you choose seasoning. Cajun all the way, baby. Brown rice, salad or stir fry veggies seasoned to perfecton. It is a hole in the wall, order at counter place but very popular with locsls in the know. So glad she introduced me to a wonderful local eatery. When you walk in other members in my group noticed the burning smell. Personally I didn't notice it, but I sure did taste it in my salmon. All of us did unfortunately. It was hard to enjoy the fish due to the bottom being not blackened but BURNT. Our meals came out at different times so it's unclear how all 3 entrees ended up being burnt. Hole-in-the-Wall Deliciousness!!! My dad always trusted the local hole in the wall for a great meal when he travelled, and this place is no exception. If you're looking for fine wine and fancy cutlery, this isn't it. But, if you are looking for good, fresh seafood, cooked simply and prepared well, look no further. I had a combo of halibut, shrimp and scallops. All grilled (fried is a choice also). First of all, the scallops. PERFECTLY grilled. Not too chewy, not too raw. Just perfect, which is harder to find. Halibut had a nice fresh flavor and a good char to the shrimp. One note, be sure to request seasoning (Cajun, lemon pepper etc.) or it might be a touch bland as they leave it to you. But, the meal came with some tasty tartar sauce and surprisingly spicy cocktail sauce. A tasty meal and a definite return spot next time I'm in town read more

Just by looking at the place you know it isn't going to be the kind of place where the waitress wipes your face for you, but that's totally ok. Some think the food is a bit pricey, but as I see it, I am willing to pay the extra buck to know my sandwich is going to be awesome every time. What they may lose in pricepoint, they make up for in consistency. I love that you have the option or fried or grilled and fries or rice. So greasy yes, but you have the option to take the healthy route. This restaurant has been a staple in Spenard for years, very much earring a reputation for great halibut. As a longtime Alaskan, I can remember the days of Momma O's even back from when I was young. It has been here for that long. And it's a place I enjoy. It has made its way into my rotation of restaurants I go to while leading a gluten and soy free lifestyle. Usually its grilled chicken and brown rice for me. And my order is usually to go since I work in midtown. I have found the earlier you get there, the better. Because the parking lot can fill up and leave you with no place to park. Yesterday was a prime example. I had been craving halibut so decided to drop by and place a to go order. It was only a little bit after 11:00 but every parking space in that strip mall was full. And I kept circling and circling three times but no such luck. So ended up missing out on my Momma O's experience. Momma O's definitely does have its regulars, including many from the body building crowd loading up on their macros. When you have items such as grilled chicken or halibut with salad and rice on the menu, it is easy to understand why. Plus they offer stir fry veggies and it was nice to see their salad bar reappear over the last 18 months. What allows me to eat their halibut is the fact they don't put any breading on it. I have never had any reactions to their grilled foods since going gluten free, which is why I continue to visit. Staff is friendly and are long time employees. Some people say they are a bit on the pricey side but the reality is I find them competitive when it comes to the price of fish. There is a good menu selection and what is better is you can call in your order. Definitely a longtime fan of Momma O's. Will continue to return as long as they continue to treat me right. Followed the reviews looking for a good piece of fish. Found it. Crispy, flaky, and delectable. I got the calamari-halibut combo and was very impressed. Only other place I've had squid that tender was in Monterey. Wife got the fish tacos, which were not quite Baja, but did have nice whole wheat tortillas and a great grilled spicy fish. It is definitely $$, but does give good value. The loss of one star is for drink options. Fish this good and crispy deserves ice cold beer. They have none; you have to get take out and go down to Brown Jug on Northern Lights. That's the only thing missing between this and perfection. read more

For over $18 I got a piece of halibut that was 3" x 4" at its widest points and was from 3/8" on one end to 3/4" on the other....must have been the end of the tail. Ok, so meager portioning...maybe it is fantastically cooked and seasoned. Nope. Somewhere in the middle to the end of one of the countless strip malls that inhabit this slightly-nicer part of Anchorage, Momma O's politely yet firmly calls out for our attention. Eating at a new location on the way to an airport is always somewhat of a shaky endeavour, mostly because filling one's body with unknown ingredients from unknown origins in unadvisable immediately before strapping yourself into a seat and being hurtled around at thirty-thousand feet of altitude. There's also the quantity debate; when I am discovering a new restaurant I largely prefer to "eat around" the menu and get a good feel for lots of it, whereas probably the worst feeling when flying is to be overstuffed or bloated. Good thing we happened upon Momma O's then, where our seafood was fresh and fun and often local, portions were happily on the side of good value, and I and my fellow traveler came away feeling sated and unusually light. First interactions with the counter service were amusing, as with my initial orders swatted back at me with less-than-encouraging comments from a gentleman leaned up against the wall behind the cash register. After two rebuttals I asked him for his own suggestions that included a light damning of the steamed clams: "I'm a steamed clams guy, and these are OK"; the uncommon declaration of a smaller winner in immortal chip shop battle of halibut vs. cod (that means the cod of course), and an explanation of his unusual perched position against the wall (last week's neck surgery after which he happily "feels 100% better already"). His assertiveness won me over and I was quickly happy to let him lead the ordering process. This was the right move. Think of Momma O's as a fish-and-chips kind of a place, but with better and broader options than some of the east coast style 'fried-food-only' joints that have become almost the only places to consistently get inexpensive food within a day's flight of the Atlantic. On this side of the world; the recently-repaired John is the owner-in-the-making, and he seems determined to balance his evolving menu between the lovely, flaky grace of local grilled cod, the boldness of Alaskan halibut, and some creative southern flavors that clearly speak to him quite personally. The local cod he recommended was grilled to perfection, flaky but firm and just wonderfully textured. Cod is such a light fish that it is often obliterated on plates with gimmicks aimed at people that really despise the taste of seafood but are swayed by the idea of its exclusiveness and health benefits. Blackening and cajun rubs are two frequent culprits, neither in my opinion should be a part of any fish dish that is less bold and oily than a smoked salmon or mackerel. Similarly and as intimated by John, the frying process also diminishes the flavor. While a good cod and chips is wonderful, it is so more because of the marriage of contrasting fish and potato and vinegary, citrusy acids and their textures than because of how it frames the natural taste of the fish. If I digress, it's to underscore how well Momma O's stays away from these pitfalls and allows the diner to taste his food. The fried scallops were delightful, small and dainty but deep in their tastes and with the lovely resilience from a good 'deep veined' product as is common in those northern waters. All of the friend ingredients except the vegetables were coated in an absolutely perfect fried fish batter, which, to be clear, is almost like a tempura, but somehow longer and more giving and more suited to cling to protein-rich flesh. A related thought is that the presence of malt vinegar bottles on North American fish restaurant tables is a good sign. It proves that some of us are learning why our neighbors across the pond refuse any other condiment with their staples. At some stage John stopped at our table with a small bowl of what he termed a "creole", in this case what I'd describe as a light gumbo. He had already told me that he does not use okra in his gumbo, relying instead on a roux base for thickening. What he does use is discretion, certainly the better part of valor where the ingredients are as delicate as in this dish. His veloute of a tomato-based sauce draped silky around the rice, and the shrimp were firm and full of flavors. The herbs and spices present but not dominant. A wonderfully-executed, sophisticated dish that felt almost too formal for a strip mall in Anchorage. But any thoughts of pretence are counterbalanced by the (very) casual atmosphere, the banter with the staff (friendly) and the solid value running up and down the menu. We boarded our planes late into that night in the almost-total midsummer absence of darkness, with the distinct pleasure of being full and content and knowing we had a place to return to. I got reacquainted with their deep fried halibut (3 pieces the size of a thick wallet) and chips - $13.50 but better than any downtown place for same price. It was like authentic North Sea fish and chips. I can't explain how fresh the halibut was: moist but firm... the batter was not too thick but not too thin...and nice and crisp...Momma O's is Yum-O. The prices fluctuate because of the price of halibut itself. It's been really expensive lately. You can buy prime rib cheaper than Alaskan halibut. They do prepare your seafood any way you like it but for me, old fashioned Brit style fish and chips is what I want when I walk into the place. read more

Momma O's has changed hands several times, but what stays the same is the fact that you can walk in and get good healthy food quickly. You place your order, and if you want a salad you can make it yourself while they whip up the rest of your meal. For those of us who are health conscious they provide grilled chicken or halibut(high protein!) it will help you lose weight around your tummy and your wallet! For the people who value taste over waist go around the corner to hogg brothers...oh wait they are remodeling. Lucky for you the fried chicken at Momma O's is fantastic too. First impressions were terrible. Ordered onion rings as an appetizer, and half the rings still had raw flour batter inside.. Then after telling the waitress of this concern, she offered to cook "a few more" to compensate. However, she came back minutes later with the same onion rings we complained about (we took a bite of these earlier...). Surprisingly good but also not? I think it comes down to the fish you chose. If you're looking for just a good plate of fried or grilled seafood, this place works. Intimate little setting, simple not a lot of pizzazz. There's a "salad bar", but it didn't look too appetizing. Cod was a little dry and could've used some salt, but the crunch and crispy crust on everything was great. I ordered the cod combo with calamari. My fiancé had the cod platter with fried scallops and clam strips. Odd taste to the scallop and a little too much moisture so the crust didn't adhere well. Calamari was really good, as were the clam strips. Their tartar sauce tastes like it's almost honey mustard based which I definitely loved. Fries are steak fry style or you can get white or brown rice. Prices are a little high for some of what's offered and fairly middle of the road for some of their sandwiches. Service was, interesting and felt like we were being watched. Overall not a terrible spot to stop for some fried seafood goodies. read more

This place was a favorite for decades so I was very disappointed to go today and see prices hugely up and quality hugely down. No more home cut real fries (just the cheapest run of the mill skinny pre-frozen junk), no more light batter (heavy and gooey) and no more fresh halibut- it's definitely frozen. The real tipping point was the prices have risen at least 30%. OK -they re-decorated a bit, but Mama O should not have given her good name over to this new management. Lunch with beverage and tip $27. Yet they remain busy with take out. So I am not sure if that means not enough options out there, or not enough people have caught up with the new status. read more

Meh! Stopped in for dinner and found this place to be nothing more than average. Chose the halibut but probably made the mistake of getting it grilled as frying it in batter would have likely hid the cardboard taste you get from grilling a frozen filet. Shrimp were also hard and rubbery but the scallops were great. I even enjoyed the stir-fried veggies. The service was great and very friendly, although we had to wipe our own table. I always get fish&chips (Halibut) and my son loves the Crab burger. Little pricey- $30 for both items listed. But, I can usually make 2 meals out of mine.
