My beloved Momo Masala is reborn from the ashes under new management as Momo Ethnic Eats! Currently the menu is very limited - just momo and curry - so I hope they add more items soon. I tried the lamb curry ($8.95) and my friends had the chicken curry ($7.95) and the veggie momo ($6). The curries come with rice and lentils, and the momo comes with a cabbage slaw and hot sauce. My curry was tasty and the lamb was tender. Overall satisfying and filling. I stole some hot sauce to try on my lamb and it was actually spicy - major props. Not well-advertised so let me help. Momo has a nice ambient with relaxing music playing in the background. The food is comparable style to Vik Chaat in South Berkeley. The quality is actually quite good. You get a soup, main dish, crispy naan and a huge potion of rice for 7.50 plus tax. There's so variety of such combo: veggies, lamp, and chicken curry. There's other items on the menus too. The staff is nice and amicable. I'd definitely come again. Don't forget to try the chai tea for $1! read more

It's an Indian restaurant with ok food near the engineering buildings. Convenient when you're working late on a project or don't want to leave northside and want Indian food. The food is not bad. The curries are flavorful but really heavy/oily. I'd give the food 3 stars on average. My problem with this place is its strange menu decisions and constant state of flux. The curries all come with rice. This is annoying if you want to eat it with naan, roti, etc. as most Indian restaurants would serve. I think they're trying to appeal to the non-Indian crowd on northside by giving rice by default. Also, the amount of rice is awkward - big enough to go with maybe half the curry. So I usually ended up going to the lunch special. It used to be 8 bucks for a single plate of however much food you could cram on it. The lunch buffet was pretty bland, even compared to the normal dishes, but for the price it was ok. Unfortunately, they changed that sometime at the beginning of this school year. They ended up charging for the plate based on the weight of the food plus the paper plate and started doing crafty things like offering chicken curry with bones in it to increase the weight. The price was now more like $10, which made me want to come less frequently. The straw that really breaks the camel's back is their most recent change. Instead of paper plates, they started using metal trays for the lunch special. You're probably thinking "they wouldn't possibly charge extra for the weight of the metal tray?" Well, unless I'm mistaken, they actually charge for it. I got a reasonable amount of food and ended up paying $13. I wouldn't recommend coming here considering how awkward and pricey things are. Either way, if you regularly eat Indian food, you will probably be disappointed in the quality of the food. The best food here is probably the chicken curries. There ended up being mayonnaise on my wrap. The chef was asked several times what was in the wrap. At no point did he say mayonnaise. There is no mayonnaise listed anywhere on the menu. Even the chef knew he messed up. Mayonnaise disrupts my digestion. I explained this to them and returned the food asking for a refund as I needed to leave for work. They took the food, and then called the manager or owner who proceeded to raise his voice with me. Blame ME for not telling them no mayonnaise. And proceeded to deny me a refund. And he said I could get a "discount" the next time I returned. So let me get this straight. You took my money, my food included an irritant which made it inedible by your own fault and then you refuse to give me my money back!!?? Not to mention the place is filthy! Sticky tables and floors. So I was pretty pumped to eat here, given the high reviews and the chill vibe of the place. The owner lady seemed super nice. The problem was though, you can see into the kitchen from the counter, and as I was paying I saw a chef picking sliced onions from off the ground and putting them in a container with other onions (obviously for grill use). I came here for lunch between classes and was very disappointed. I ordered the lamb vindaloo -- a very safe choice when it comes to this cuisine. What I actually got were hard pieces of lamb with half boiled potatoes in a salty and bland sauce, not to mention the pitiful serving size (about 5 eraser sized nuggets of lamb, one potato halved, and a small carryout container of rice). I was tired of eating Japanese or Chinese food so I tried this place out after seeing a 6.50 lunch special sign. I loaded a lot of food on the metal plate to hear the worker explain that it was $6.50 per Pound. The total including tax was $15.27 and even the worker was kinda surprised. All I could think in my head was "rekt". I was not impressed with the food for the price. It was tasty, but on the bland side. I am not sure why this place is rated so highly. The food is just okay, and the prices are higher than your average Indian restaurant. Sure, they give you generous portions and free chai tea, but so does every other Indian restaurant in Berkeley, and sometimes for a fraction of the price. The chicken tikka masala sauce tasted like a buttery tomato soup, not the deliciously spiced tikka masala sauce that we all know and love. The chicken biryani was pretty average; I wish it automatically came with the yogurt raita sauce. I was very much looking forward to the Tibetan momos from Momo Masala, but was sorely disappointed by them. Their momos are, essentially, beef inside a thick dumpling wrapper. While they were good, I wish there was more of a balance between the meat and other ingredients normally found in dumplings, like vegetables, potatoes, spices, etc. The momos here are just filled with spiced beef. Because of how heavy beef is, I could only eat about four in one sitting. Perhaps traditional momos are very heavy on the meat, but if that is the case, I guess I'm not a fan of traditional momos. read more

I'm reading the rave reviews on here, and I have to say that I just don't get it? Perhaps I should give this place another chance considering I haven't tried their buffet, but my experience was...not great. I ordered the navratan korma and malai kofta along with some tandoori roti to-go. Both dishes tasted EXACTLY the same, because they used the exact same curry to go with both. There was a clear separation layer between my curries and the thick oil floating at the top. I tried mixing the curries well with my spoon to get some sort of emulsion going, but it still just tasted like canola oil. The roti was all right, but greasy as well. I guess I'm still on the quest to find a great Indian restaurant in Berkeley, but I guess I might just be spoiled because my mom truly makes the best :'). read more

The best food in the Hearst/Euclid area. The service is absolutely wonderful. Their lunch buffet is super cheap and fast if you're looking for large portions quickly. Their menu items are all delicious. I've loved everything I've tried. If you're looking for ridiculously large portions, as I often am, get the rice dishes. If you want something that is filling, the meat/veggie specials (rice + sauce) are the way to go. They have varying levels of spiciness- all the way to "indian spicy." I dare not try that, but I see other reviews complaining about it not being spicy enough- so if you need more spice, ask for indian spicy. (The "spicy" is enough to make me tear up, and I can handle a fair bit of spice.) Very glad Momo Masala opened up :) read more

I work on north side so I'm always trying out all the little restaurants in this food plaza. This place I think just opened up recently and after seeing the (surprising) awesome reviews, I decided to give their Chicken Tikka Masala a try! The restaurant is small but the lady at the counter that was helping me was soo nice and helpful. I just ordered the chicken tikka masala for $6.95+tax and it came with a thing of rice. I also asked for this "really really spicy" (my exact words) and the lady was like :O so I was expecting them to literally make it super spicy, but nope. So! I got it to go I walked over to my work opened my food. I see the curry contained and theres actually like 1cm of oil on top of the curry. I only walked about 3 minutes to my work place so to see that it separated so much already was a little unappetizing. It took me a long time to skim all that oil off the top. The Good: -good service -huge portions (i couldnt finish it) -sooo many chunks of chicken! seriously lots of chicken -cheap prices The Bad: -really oily -not that spicy even though I asked for really really spicy -coated my mouth with oil so couldnt really taste the curry :/ I reallyyy wanted to like this place and I feel bad for giving them a bad review because they were so nice. But, I think i would come back and try something else and eat in because maybe take out just isnt the same. Momo Masala is a hole in the wall located on north side Asian ghetto, with a few tables inside and unlimited milk tea! They have varieties of Indian and Tibetan dishes, however I've only tried their Indian food. Dishes I have tried here include: lamb tikka masala, chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloo, lamb biryani, chicken biryani, and lamb curry. I come here once a month, because it's very convenient( I don't have to go all the way to southside, or downtown Berkeley to get indian food), and some of their food is decent flavor wise. They also have a buffett for lunch from 11-3 during weekdays, and then you pay based on how much your plate weighs (which in my opinion is not fair). The staff here are super friendly and welcoming. But, I'm just gonna point out why I'm giving this place a 3-star (instead of a 4-star): - There is not much variety to their buffet, and they weigh your plate. I recommend ordering instead. - The food here is way too greasy/oily (so beware). - The service is slow (slower than most other places that serve this type of food). - Prices are a bit high. The portions are fair (they could be a bit bigger). - Some of their dishes (e.g lamb vindaloo or lamb curry) are bland. I got chicken tikka masala with a side of basmati race and garlic naan via delivery. As soon as I looked at the rice I noticed it was normal plain rice and NOT the basmati that I paid $2-3 for specifically. Basically they just passed it off until it was delivered and there was nothing to be done about it. Don't charge me for something I did NOT pay for. If this place ONLY serves plain white rice then market it as so. Who does that?? The chicken tikka masala itself was way too creamy and almost made me a little sick trying to eat it. I took four or five bites before I realized it had no spice or flavor and stopped eating. The chicken was way overcooked and rubbery and had absolutely no flavor saturated into it. The garlic naan was okay... Regular naan. I won't be ordering from this place again. Too expensive for such a terrible attempt at Indian food. It's goooooooood (probably closer to 3.5) but the portions are too small I think. Great pricing though, so it's really a trade-off, which makes sense. I have tried MoMo many places in Bay Area, but by far this is the best place for Mo Mo I had. Coming from Nepal, I can tell you the taste of MoMo how it should be. Momo Masala is my favorite Indian joint in the Berkeley area. I've been to a number of different spots around the Bay Area, but this is by far the best in my opinion. I had the Coconut Chicken Curry as well as the Tiki Masala and both were fantastic. I ordered an onion naan and it was great as well. The food portions are generous. The free chai tea is also an added bonus. The food is great but my favorite thing about this place is the customer service. Kelsa is the sweetest lady ever. She is very kind and talkative (in a good way). The food came out quickly and she offered very good recommendations. I came back a second time and she actually remembered me. Samosas are always great and my go-to, and they're always fresh! The owners there are super nice and really care about their customers, sometimes they give us tea when it's a bit cold out! I'm upping this to a 5 star because the chicken tikka masala is just WAY TOO ADDICTING. Kelsant is a super nice hostess and loves to interact with her customers! Regarding the chicken tikka masala - it's probably the best one I've had so far, the other major competitor being the one at Indian Flavors on Southside. Just something about the flavor - it's just right! I always want to come back and try something new, but I end up ordering the chicken tikka masala again because it's too hard to resist! By the way, make sure to order the regular naan with the chicken tikka masala. The garlic naan always seems a little too hard and crunchy for my taste, while the regular naan is perfectly smooth and soft! And it complements the sauce very well. Even though the tea is on the side, it's not too bitter or too sweet. It's just right! Make sure to grab a cup with your tikka masala as well. Are you hungry but will admit you have low standards sometimes? Is it between 11am and 3pm? Do you want a lot of food, mostly chicken, vegetables, and rice, but don't want to pay an arm and a leg? Are you too lazy to walk to the south side of campus or to downtown Berkeley? Is ambiance unimportant to you when dining, at least for this meal? Do you really not care if your food tastes like... much of anything? If you answered YES to most or all of those questions, then the Momo Masala daily lunch special is right for you! Offered Monday-Friday from 11am to 3pm, Momo Masala has a "buffet" set up for dining in or for takeout. I put buffet in quotes because it isn't a set price and eat all you want, it's pay-by-weight. Granted, at $5 per pound, it is CHEAP and you can stuff yourself almost as much for not a ton more than what a higher quality Indian buffet would set you back. The place itselt is unimpressive. It's small and has uncomfortable, lawn chair-like seats. If you're dining in, you serve yourself from the buffet onto a silver cafeteria-esque tray that reminded me of elementary school. Come on guys, just use a plate, we're adults here. On a warm day like today, it was stuffy inside and made me want to eat as quickly as possible. A few flies buzzed around, which doesn't really bother me, but I suppose is worth noting since it may matter to others. Maybe it's just because it was so hot, but the water cooler water wasn't cool at all, it was completely lukewarm. Not very refreshing. Now for the food. Nothing was bad, but nothing was particularly good. There was little to no flavor in all of the dishes I tried. The rice is billed as basmati rice but it's just plain steamed white rice. The chicken curry (when sold as a menu item, it's boneless, but in the buffet it's bone-in) had an all-right taste to it. It was dark meat chicken (surprise! much cheaper than white meat) and the curry was nothing to write home about, had no kick to it, but was totally edible. There were pretty tiny bones in the meat though, so I had to be careful with every bite. That got old real fast. The potatoes in the curry were fine, cooked to a nice and soft but not mushy consistency. The tandoori chicken was decently cooked and not overly dry. but also not really moist enough to want to eat a second time. Again, dark meat only - drumsticks and thighs, bone-in. There was a saag on the buffet - not saag paneer or chicken or anything, just a big dish of spinach. It was pretty much completely flavorless, with even less taste than the most boring creamed chicken I had at friend's houses for dinner when I was a kid. It was so watery that when I spooned some (trying unsuccessfully to avoid the puddles of liquid) into a part of the tray with a piece of naan, the naan was completely soaked through and mushy by the time I paid and sat down. The naan was nothing special, not bad but not that chewy texture I'm used to. The mixed vegetable masala was the only thing I really could say I enjoyed at all. Cauliflower, green beans, carrots, peppers, and some other things, maybe peas, in a slight amount of curry sauce (not watery at all like the saag or curry sauce the chicken was in). The most flavor out of all the items was in the veg masala and if I ever were to have to eat here again, I'd probably order that or just fill my entire takeout container (no more eating here, no thanks) with it. The veggies were cooked pretty well, they could have had a little more crunch in my opinion. I didn't try the channa (chickpeas) masala/aloo - I don't remember which it was - since I could barely find any in the sea of sauce. Maybe spooning that over the veg masala would be an all right mix. There was a salad on the buffet that I would have gotten if there were a dressing out (once I was done eating and leaving, I noticed someone had but a squeeze bottle of ranch out), but it was nothing special of a salad at all, basically a mix from a bag you'd get at the grocery store. Overall, I could eat enough to be full for really quite cheap, but I have literally nothing to possibly say about the flavors in any of the items, since none really had much of any flavor at all. I was too lazy to walk down to the south side or Shattuck for a better lunch buffet and I had accepted I wasn't going to be impressed, but I didn't expect to be so depressed by this meal. Lesson learned. If I really can't bear to walk any farther away than Hearst Food Court, I'll stick with the Snack Shack or Pizzahhh! read more

Momo Masala is a small Tibetan/Indian food restaurant restaurant seated in the heart of the North side "Asian Ghetto". The food is very well priced especially considering the quality and the portions. Despite it being a hot day, the room felt nice and cool, almost as if there was AC. We ordered the Aloo Ghobi, Parathas, Chili Paneer Tikka, and some naan and enjoyed the complimentary tea as well. It was the friendly, almost like a home, type of feel. We could just sit back enjoy our food, chat with our server, drink tea, and enjoy life. This type of friendly and laid back restaurant experience is hard to find. This was my first visit here and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the food, the service, and the kindness of the staff. Kelsung, our server, was super friendly and left me with the feeling that I had literally just stepped out of a restaurant in India. I really wish I could give this place a better review. The service was amazing. The woman woking the front was very nice. However the food did not justify the price. I got chicken vindaloo. She asked me how spicy I wanted it, so I said "medium". When I got the dish, I was not expecting to there to be white rice and not basmati or even jasmine. The vindaloo itself also had very little spice to it. I know that I said "medium", but I wasn't expecting it to be bland. I was suddenly in the mood for Indian food so I googled 'great indian restaurants/berkeley.' MM seemed to be one of the best reviewed, so I headed over to the Northside. Being part of the campus food court and having a tiny dining area, I was surprised to be paying almost $18 for garlic nan, channa masala and the chicken tikka masala in tomato sause. The channa masla was very watery, not a lot of flavor, and the same could be said of the chicken dish where I tasted no tomato but a kind of boiled chicken skin kind of taste, although it was served without skin. There's nothing like being greeted by the warm smiles of the materteral owners, who remember your name and your favorite order. The lamb curry is their best dish (imho), just the right spice and quantity for the palette. Their dal is a really yummy side dish that comes with the meal (many similar-cuisine places only sell a meat dish and rice, and then nickel-and-dime you if you want any veges, this one gives you the entire meal). They have a chef-buffet-style model where you see all the food prepared in front of you but they control the spoons, which allows them to give you your food with remarkable alacrity so the wait is almost immediate for your food, even if there are some people in front of you.
