So I will say -- I am normally a very traditional sushi eating person, and have never been a big fan of over flavored rolls. Also I'm definitely a Manhattan girl and haven't really travelled the the boroughs mostly out of laziness. Momo Sushi Shack was seriously a phenomenal experience and I'll definitely come back! The food is perfection, with phenomenal flavors, great quality fish, and creative presentation and ingredient combinations. We started with some seaweed salad (amazing), and then focused the entire rest of our meal on sushi. We got two party bomb platters and there was something for everyone -- salmon, tuna, eel! The little rice mounds were perfect serving sizes and the combination of the three wasabi options made each mouthful scrumptious. We also ordered a few of their fusion rolls and they were amazing as well (specifically I remember a roll with mango that was so sweet and savory!). Although we focused mostly on sushi, others around us ordered plenty of cooked food which all smelled great! The service was also great with all the waiters and the hostess all excited to talk about the menu, make suggestions, and help accommodate us (despite us coming right around closing). Food here is okay, but nothing amazing or unique. Veggie cold noodles were a little bland and overall too simple -- nothing pops out about it. Also the sauce was pretty watery and flavorless. Shrug, edible. Pork ramen is a really small portion for Japanese ramen -- was okay, nothing great. Maybe their standard menu instead of lunch specials are better considering all the high Yelp ratings. The vibe in here is a little weird for lunch -- really REALLY dark with these warehouse fluorescent lights. Communal seating at long tables. Kinda felt like a drug addict hanging out there. Service was really REALLY friendly. The server was super attentive, checked in several times to make sure we were doing well. This place took me by surprise. It's like a garage, with long communal tables. The owner was there and greeted us with a handshake and a "Welcome to my restaurant." Nice gentleman. Our waitress was nice too, and gave is that days special. We (Tim & i) ordered 2 rolls, a salad, and one of the specials, which was fried chicken that you dip in some sauce (the sauce was good). Our rolls were very good, and they give you 3 different soy sauces ranging from regular, so-so spicy, and very spicy. The fried chicken wasn't my favorite, I wasn't really carving fried food, but it was good nonetheless. The salad was the best part of the whole experience. I have company coming into town today and I will be taking them there. It's a cash only sushi bar, but there's a conveniently located ATM machine right outside. I've eaten a lot of sushi in my life--from the highest of high-end to cheap, grocery store junk. So, it's pretty safe to say that my experiences have ranged quite a bit over the years. But, after venturing into Momo earlier this week, I can happily proclaim that I've added another notch to the "great" column. Opting for the Omakase menu, we were treated to a wide array of delicious dishes. Korean fried chicken, crispy cauliflower, fatty tuna, yellowfin... we ran through each offering without a care in the world. Every item was well-crafted, fresh, and popping with flavor. On top of that, our waiter was thoroughly entertaining, courteous, and attentive throughout the entire meal. If I had to pick a favorite bites, I'd most likely point to the Brussels sprouts or spicy McBomb. They were top notch and definitely stood out to me. I'll be honest, I've passed Momo on a regular basis for close to 9 years now. Yet, something always kept me from popping in for a meal. I almost feel guilty about squandering so many chances to enjoy what they have to offer. This is the real deal legit fusion sushi joint that Bogart Street always needed! Perfect timing too, this bitch has all but blown up compared to 7 years ago when my buddies opened the Archive - now that was a risk... but I digress. Got the spicy tuna and salmon avacado rolls and the gyoza! All was very good; the salmon struck me as being very fresh and oh so creamy! Seriously this is fresh fish! Was looking through yelp for a sushi place that was nearby to an art exhibit I had planned to see with some friends. Ended up landing on momo, and I'm so glad I did. We ordered a few regular rolls, a bomb, and some fried rice, all of which was delicious and fresh. The rolls had a generous amount of fish inside, and the prices were pretty decent for what we ordered. They were even open to substitutions, although I would've understood if they hadn't been. The bomb was three larger pieces with the fish on top of the rice/etc, but without seaweed. At only a dollar cheaper than the rolls, we found the rolls were a better deal, but we were still very happy with what we ordered. The fried rice was a much larger size than we expected, and was definitely a good deal. I hadn't eaten all day and, with only one roll and half of the rice, I was full! The wait staff was very friendly and attentive, and they split checks. Very glad I chose this spot, and will definitely come back if I'm ever in the area. read more

Faced with a two hour wait at Roberta's on an evening that seemed to be filled with off timing, we had passed Momo's by and revisited it after a "nearby" Yelp search. And it friggin' blew our mind. Only after we arrived did we realize that this was Phillip's restaurant. Phillip from Marlo & Sons. The guy that is completely dedicated to his craft, informed and just frankly, oozing enthusiasm. Seated at a communal table, our waitress was quick to bring us wine and a pitcher of water. And then came the pork betty. Every bite of this decadent, perfectly proportioned pork belly was mind blowing. We devoured it and then insisted on keeping the broth on the table to use for our sushi. A sushi bomb came, various other sushi items came. We continued to think about the pork betty. We ordered some fried chicken as an afterthought. Fabulous. I'm just going to start off by telling you that I've never had a food coma hurt so good..Here's a list of what RK and I had the very first time we came to MoMo's. Tofu salad. Tempura. Salmon guacamole. Mexican bomb. Spicy una bomb. A-B-Crunchy roll. Wagyu beef with wasabi mashed potatoes. Chilean seabass. (This was just in one night, I know I'm missing a dish or two but I think the point was made) I came back a week after this, and had most of the rolls on the menu..Still delicious. It's really exciting to have MoMo in the neighborhood. They cater to everyones taste buds..Want regular rolls? Got it. Want fusion dishes? MoMo's got it. The food was absolutely magical, I didn't know a great sushi spot existed.. I thought it was as real as magical unicorns that fed me endless supplies of cream puffs. February. 1st time. Three stars. May. 2nd time. Four stars. November. 3rd time. And I'm head over heels. The variation in stars is partially me realigning expectations and largely learning what and how to order. First, don't expect super traditional sushi - get ready to play. Second, if you love weird raw stuff, don't hesitate to ask your server for what just flew in (swam in?) that day. Third, get a mix of sushi and warm dishes. The more texture and flavor variation the more your taste buds will go buck wild with joy. The little bombs are good (think round versions of nigiri with a creative garnish) but they're not what really get me here. The fish is fresh and cut well but doesn't end up being the star on the plate. If you do go the bomb route, I'd go yellowtail all the way. The salmon guacamole roll is definitely what gets my palate popping. And the futomaki mixed pickled veggie roll is amazing (available vegan, like many other nifty menu items). I also had some sort of tuna tartar thing with raw quail egg that was tasty. The octopus, though very good and very fresh, coulda been beaten/softened just a bit more. I saw the ceviche and it looked gorgeous and delicious replete with ginger. I couldn't quite romance the stranger next to me to let me try a bite of hers. Though I'll be damned if I didn't try my hardest! Next time I will be ordering it for sure. The pork betty is awesome - sauce is sweet and savory at the same time. Not too fatty. Melt in your mouth wonderful. What tickles me particularly pink is the fantastic and attentive service. There is always someone there to give you refills or check in on you or bring you a menu when you want seconds. Also, whenever the kitchen makes a "mistake," the manager brings it out for diners to sample and share. It makes you feel at home. I love the atmosphere here. Warm, contemporary, industrial, and cozy if you can imagine such a brilliant hybrid. The patrons are delightfully heterogeneous (i.e. not all white Williamsburgers). You get a lot of international travelers from the nearby hostel, too. But hipness does hover in the air. Luckily its more of the friendly breed. CASH ONLY. There is an ATM directly outside. Momo has become DIY therapy for me. I go in all surly full of mean-mugging ambitions and leave wanting to hug everyone (and often do just that). I can't help it. Unless the sushi in Brooklyn is really mediocre, I don't understand the hype about this place. The Mexican bomb was a ripoff! There was barely any fish and the heat was so lacking. It was just three small "sushi" bites for $5. The green chile sauce was sour and barely had any heat. The other rolls were forgettable. They pre-mix the soy sauce here which I think is unnecessary. The service was good. The lady kept refilling my water which was great because I was super thirsty. Don't expect a quick meal here. Food comes out very slowly here so set aside some time and some cash because it's CASH only! read more

We are a family of four visiting from Seattle. Showed up at 8:15-ish on Tuesday night. They tell us it'll take 15 minutes until we get seated. It took only 2 minutes. They have 4-5 rows of communal tables. We order 6-7 rolls, 2 appetizers, and the kids order miso soup. The rolls come first, fairly quickly. We ask for the miso soup for the kids, and they tell us any moment now. We start eating the rolls. We haven't had any sushi in NYC so we can't compare, but the sushi is not very good. Perhaps, it's harder to do good sushi in NYC. The even more surprising part is that they don't serve ginger with the sushi. They tell us that instead of ginger they serve pickled radish. The radish has no taste, it has a rusty color which is also unusual. Also, they don't have the little plates for the soy sauce. I think you're supposed to sprinkle the sauce over the sushi directly. 10 minutes later, the rolls are almost done, and they bring the appetizers -- croquettes and an eggplant dish. Both are really subpar. The croquettes are basically deep-fried cheese, and the eggplant has a gingery spice. 10 minutes later, they asked if we want anything else. We said that we'd like the miso soups. They arrive a minute later and they tell us they're free because they are late. We ask for the check -- you can only pay cash here. No cc-s. At this point, I'm thinking that perhaps sushi in NYC for a bunch of Seattle folks is just a bad idea. Although I still don't understand why they had to serve us sushi, appetizers, and miso soup in the reverse order. But the next thing got me really upset. My 8 year old daughter asks if it's ok to take her half-full can of lemonade on the way out. The waitress with a straight face says "No." She then starts .. "Uh.. Uhh... there's a store next door, and their clients take beverages outside all the time. So I guess... yeah.. perhaps ... I'm not sure. But probably, yeah." At this point, my daughter whose a stickler for rules refuses to take the can with us and leaves it unfinished on the table. This is summertime, with 90 degrees outside and the restaurant where I'm paying $100 cash tells my 8 year old that taking her unfinished lemonade can (a San Pelligrino) is against the rules. I think that's just plain cruel. And stupid. read more

Momo Sushi Shack. Making sushi for white kids in Bushwick who don't know any better and stiffing you on alcohol you've already paid for. The boyfriend and I were bar-hopping around my neighborhood and I suggested Momo. We both love sushi and since he is a server at a prominent Japanese restaurant in Manhattan, the dude knows his sushi shit. We both had very high expectations. We had good meals at Bozu before, which is Momo's big brother restaurant situated in Williamsburg. The introduction of the "dipping sauces" should have been an indication of the lackluster experience to come. These sauces were merely 3 tiny cups of soy sauce, each pre-mixed with a different amount of wasabi. This restaurant cannot even trust its patrons in mixing the soy sauce to their own tastes. Way to play to the lowest common denominator, guys. We wanted to just try a few things first before we went all out. The 2 sushi bombs we ordered (Spicy Mc, and Yellowtail), in addition to the Salmon Herb Roll were huge disappointments. The fish itself was fresh, however Momo seriously neglected the rice. There was no flavor to it, not even a hint of vinegar and it was dry. A restaurant can doctor up the fish all it wants with "wasabi cream" and "fresh herbs" but if it can't prepare the rice properly upon which these are situated then why is Momo wasting my time? And my money for that matter?! Before this debacle we had ordered a large carafe of sake. We were brought the entire cardboard jug of the sake we ordered and it was placed on ice at our table. Great, at least we had plenty of alcohol with which to wash down our flavorless dishes. Seeing as how we didn't want to order anything else, we decided to get the check. The next problem arose when we requested to take the 3/4 of leftover sake with us. The waitress informed us that they could not do that as it was against the law. Well it's not actually, we informed her. Most restaurants allow this and readily so. All it requires the restaurant to do is: 1. Recap/recork the jug/bottle. 2. Place in to go bag. 3. Generously staple it closed with receipt attached. To that she hastily informed us that, well, it's not restaurant policy anyway. For shame Momo, for shame. read more

Just when you thought the Morgan stop did not have a restaurant that combined both incredible food and amazing service... Momo Sushi comes along. The first STAR - the location is incredible. It's less than a block off the subway. Perfect spot. The second STAR - incredible interior - beautiful tables all cut from the same piece of wood, complete with bends and knots, straight from a storied estate in Pennsylvania. Really beautiful. The third STAR - the food is hands-down spot on. A marvelous selection of raw fish, sushi, tofu, vegetables, and couple including meat for good measure. Seriously, I'm not a tofu person, but the tofu with squash, tomatoes and avocado was incredible. The tofu was creamy - not at all watery - and reminded me of fresh italian mozzarella. Also, the sashimi grade raw scallops were divine, and freshly made carrot soup with shiso oil was spectacular. All of this, and I didn't even make it to the sushi yet! The fourth STAR - The service. You can find some great food in the neighborhood, but the missing ingredient which keeps the place around the corner from competing with the best of the best is the service, and Momo delivers no hipster attitude. It's friendly service, and people who really give a damn and believe the service is also a key part of the experience. Props to Momo on getting this down. The fifth STAR - They put together an incredible menu, amazing food, great service, ambience, and location... I think they hit a home run. Also of note, it seems the beer and sake licenses are in process... so, no booze just quite yet. And the partners behind Bozu are also behind Momo. It remains to be seen how things will develop as they scale with their soon to be popular status, but right now they deserve every bit of the five stars. Man, I sound like an over the top endorsement, but I am so excited about this place! It would be fantastic anywhere in NYC, but it's great to have it in the neighborhood. read more

AMAZING! I never go out of my way for a restaurant. Well, not to Brooklyn at least, but my friend insisted we all trek out for our girls night dinner. From the moment we walked in until our departure, we were treated like queens and fed like kings. The crowd was super chill and nice and the vibe is just what you want on a Friday night. One of the owners, Philip is so sweet and passionate about the food he serves that you can't help but feel the same way. We did the chef's tasting and everything I put in my mouth was exceptional. I almost walked past the entrance to this place before realizing it was behind an almost completely unlabeled, concealed wooden door. This place gets serious brownie points for the entrance. My girlfriend and I love this kind of stuff and knew we were in for a treat when we walked through the door. We were also pleasantly greeted by the owner upon entering and were immediately seated. Something I have not come to expect given the rude hostesses at most popular, trendy restaurants. The restaurant has communal seating, this one is much better than the usual fare, and very spacious. First up was a seaweed salad: extremely generous portion (a mixture of wakame and another seaweed) and excellent. We had some miso soup next which was fine but then came the pork belly with the egg. OH MY. This is seriously an OUTSTANDING dish! We loved it so much we ordered another one after we inhaled the first one. Next came the party bomb (a mixture of their different sushi bombs). We both liked it although wished there was a little less rice and more fish. The rice made it really filling. It was bomb though... Next came our second pork belly app, inhaled instantly again. surprise surprise... Then came the best part of the meal. The infamous Salmon Sea Urchin Bomb. I love sea urchin and this completely hit the spot. The sea urchin was excellent and very fresh. I also loved how this was not a traditional bomb but rather a cylinder of rice wrapped in fresh salmon and topped with sea urchin. Simple, elegant, and delicious. I wish this had come out first so I could have ordered more before I was so full. The only thing I would like to see worked on is the alcohol menu. The Argentinean wine they have is fine and all but pretty overpriced and served in regular glasses instead of wine glasses. I wish we had just ordered beer but... How about adding some Hitachino brewery beers instead of Asahi/Sapporo?? Listen, I'm not a sushi aficionado as in I've never been to Japan nor have I had West Coast sushi (elite status) since I was in San Fran about 6 years ago. NONETHELESS, I know that raw fish is to have a certain color and keen taste and fresher than the prince of Bel Aire. For this, and many more reasons (in spite of walking into what seems like an orange-lit opium den), I give Momo a 5 star. Pointers (I'm a fan of dashes): - Instantly greeted by a knowledgeable and sweet waitress - Sushi Bomb and sushi roll + miso soup for a $12 lunch is an unbeatable price. The flavors in my "Bomb" were so fitting; it resembles a Nagiri, but has more elemental complexity to it (shredded Phyllo dough for extra crunch- say whaaa?).
