I thought I'd try some authentic sushi and other uncooked fish, so I tried this establishment. The atmosphere is good, with comfortable seating and great use of a tiny space. I like the stairstep seating which is out of necessity given the local hilly terrain. It gives a nice sense of privacy on each of the four levels. The staff is as authentic as you can get, including limited skills in the English language, buy they try hard. After spending 20 minutes going back and forth between the choices and getting information from the server, I learned they do not do substitutions. I wanted a wide assortment of non-fried fish, since I wanted to explore eating fish I normally don't (like salmon and octopus). I also wanted to try kimchee since it's all the rage. The Momo Boxes and Combos looked good but I don't want fried food and the Combos don't have the assortment, so i settled on the Assorted Sashimi. I got a good amount of fish and some variety, plus the ever blandness of Miso soup available everywhere. Everything was bland. While the dish came with wasabi and ginger, it lacked lemon or hot sauce. Soy sauce was on the table but it is usually and was too salty and sesame tasting for me. None of the fish tasted like anything except a piece of uncooked chicken breast and had the same texture. Not the fault of this establishment it is just nature I'm guessing. Overall this is a nice place to eat if you like plain tasting sushi or Sashimi. My friend had Momo Box D. It was less expensive than my food choice, but far more variety and amount. It's a bit pricey, but not outrageous. After all it is in the tourist area, convenient to where the cruise ships stop, as well as others (like me) visiting Vancouver by land. For people who like sushi or Sashimi, I recommend this place. For people who like more tasty food, I'd suggest going elsewhere. read more

I had take out from here today since I work so close by and I found the speed and service very quick and efficient. I called at around 12:15 to place my order, and arrived at the restaurant around 12:20. I paid and got my food and got back to the office within 12 minutes! Anyways, you get a lot of packaging here so if you're an environmentalist, you might want to eat in. (You get a huge styrofoam box with a plastic container of sunomono and another container of miso soup) Everything was fairly decent but not amazing. The price I paid ($8 or so after tax) was amazing considering the nice location in gastown right on Water street! The best part of the meal for me was the crispy chicken teriyaki, which was a nice twist on the traditional soft sweet chicken dish. My gyoza wasn't very good and the california rolls were just okay, but I enjoyed the tempura (I love Kabocha squash) and the salad dressing was nice. I would definitely come back for take out since it's the closest sushi place to my office and the prices are definitely reasonable. read more

With some Korean dishes also on the menu, if you go in expecting authenticity you might be out of luck. That said, the food here is decent and the restaurant is very conveniently located, only a short walk away from Waterfront station. As I love salmon, I like coming to places like this to get my all I can possibly imagine sashimi without killing my wallet. For people who don't enjoy raw fish, they have various cooked rolls and other dishes. Well most of the review are self explanatory: great food but terrible service. I loved the specialty rolls they have to offer as I've never stumbled upon such creativity of rolls they had to offer. The Double Spicy Roll is what you would expect out of a typical spicy roll from a choice of spicy salmon or tuna (I chose tuna) with spicy crab on top. I also got the Crazy Girl Roll which is your typical California Roll with cream cheese filling. The Soft Shell Crabs is something I would get as an appetizer. With all of this being said, they seriously need to pay more attention to service and be available to their customers when needed instead of disappearing on them. Is the owner taking note? It doesn't look like it because the service is still non existent after all of the reviews that point directly to inattentive waiting service. So if you want to come here to eat, you better not let service bother you because they're not fixing that problem anytime soon. read more

Stay away. Racism at its peak and no customer service. If a restaurant can lose their reputation over a washroom, this is it. I have never been so humiliated in my life. Not being a regular in Gastown, I went into Momo Sushi, a place I have gone to and even invited friends, spending a total of over $120 for the both occasions. I went in with the intention of using a washroom, and after finding out I wasn't buying sushi, they went on to be very aggressive and rude and direct me to the public washrooms across the road. I offered to still pay for the washroom as I was not in a position to go across the road and shared that I am a regular customer that has already been with them a few times. They insisted I buy something. At this point, I was done with them. I'm just shocked that even as someone who has gone and spent my dollars with them, I could not be allowed the least dignity of using a washroom. Should I mention that I am black, and this is the first overt discrimination I have experienced. Please avoid this restaurant, to lose a customer and reputation over a washroom to someone who was actually your promoter, is pretty ridiculous. read more

I work downtown so I wanted to go something quick and reasonably priced with a co-worker for our lunch break and we came across Momo Sushi (there are like 5 places called Momo sushi, i'm taking about this one, on water street!). We were seated within 5 minutes after arriving at 12:30pm, which is almost unheard of, and the food was pretty fast with friendly service. I got a bento box which was very filling for only around $10. It has tempura, salad, sashimi, sushi as well as some beef. Everything was great... except for the beef. My co-worker had no issued with his dish at all! I would recommend trying this place out for a well priced, good sushi place, just stick to the chicken instead. Just wow. I'm a specialty roll kind of girl, when it comes to sushi. I like different flavors and textures and I like fresh seafood. Those are my most important requirements. Ambiance: kind of squashed into a small space and not super-conducive to a date or conversation. Service: matter-of-fact, efficient. Food: omg, yum! The sushi is great, big chunks of sashimi and lots of flavor in rolls. I feel like the actual rolls lacked the sushi aspect, as the amount of actual sashimi in the rolls we picked wasn't much. Spicy salmon came with fried onion on top which tasted gross and ruined the dish because it had way too much onion which was salty and greasy. Overall food was very westernized and had nothing to do with Japanese cuisine. SERVICE TERRIBLE!!!! Waitresses look so bothered to help and give you condescending looks. There are a lot of guests here, there are always so many people waiting in line.The place is extremely crowed.Entering the restaurant, the waiters greeted me with a smile. Was excited to see the place packed each time I walked by. Stopped there for lunch today. Less than par experience unfortunately. We ordered the Chicken Katzu which was not fresh. The chicken breast seemed to be twice fried. Lots of oil and dark, almost burnt, breading. Also ordered a salmon roll and a "spicy" salmon roll which only meant they squirted siracha over the top making it "spicy" BUT also added eel sauce so it was more like a sweet and spicy roll. Lastly, we ordered the Tuna Tataki roll. It was jam packed with faux crabmeat and topped with the thinnest slice of tuna tataki I've ever seen. It was more like a carpaccio. To top it off, for our 3 rolls we ordered, they gave us the smallest dollop of wasabi. It was enough to fill a thimble and it was crusty and dry. The servers seemed bothered with any additional requests for sauces, etc and didn't know what ingredients were in the food. Don't recommend this place to real sushi/katzu fans. read more

I often go to Momo for lunch since it's close to my school but only out of convenience. The first time I ever ordered something from here was just a chirashi don and ended up waiting 20 minutes for it despite the fact it wasn't super busy and I saw at least 2-3 chefs working. I usually order from them through yellow pages dining that gives you the option of paying online or during pickup. Unfortunately even if I order about 30 minutes ahead of time it's often not ready. So if you want to order, you'll have to order ahead of time by at least an hour. In terms of taste it's mediocre at best. Nothing particularly special about this place and it definitely doesn't taste authentic but the pricing is decent considering it's the only sushi place in Gastown. read more

It was over a 20 minute wait to get a table. We ordered salmon and avocado roll, chicken teriyaki roll and vegetable/salmon tempura. I wish they would have brought out both rolls at the same time. The rolls were very good. The tempura was good as well. The food was just the right amount. You can't beat the price. Don't go there super hungry. I am giving 5 stars for quality of food and price. Went back the next day and had the unagi and the tempura appetizer. The unagi was done perfectly. My cousin enjoyed the dynamite roll. You get 10 pcs of huge ass sashimi, 5 nigiri, salad, rice with masago and seaweed, tempura! All those for $15..so cheap! Also tried the chopped scallop roll (all julienne strips of cucumber in the roll and real chopped scallops on top, not nasty bay scallop and California roll). For salmon and tuna lovers, it's great if you order the special A which includes 2 pcs of nigiri, 6 pcs of sashimi, 4 California rolls, rice, soup and salad for $7.50. That's cheaper than ordering sashimi and nigiri alone. When I get a chance to starve myself next time, I want to order the chicken Katsu as well that is served on a skillet with veggies. We met friends here for lunch yesterday and we all thought the service was strange. We had to wait 20 minutes for someone to finally come and take our order. Fortunately, it didnt take too long receive our food. BUT, we never saw our server again until after we waited a long time to have our table cleared. Between that time, no one refilled our water glasses or checked on how are food was. After a half hour of receiving the bill we had to hunt down someone just so we can pay and leave because no one brought us the card machine. As for the food, I thought it was pretty good. I really liked the Ganagster Roll. The Box D option was a good choice because it had a little bit of everything that I liked such as the sashimi. Would I come here again? The sashimi was not the best quality but it was still better than the most of small-sized Japanese take-out places. Last semester, I had a CHIRASHI DON ($10.50) for my lunch almost every Tuesday. Trust me, you won't regret getting this dish. For 10 bucks, you won't have this kind of quality chirashi don in Gastown. It consisted of salmon (2pcs), tuna (2pcs), tamago (2pc), toro (1pc), sockeye salmon (1pc), hokkigai (1pc), ebi (1pc), tai (1pc), tako (1pc), chopped scallop, spicy tuna, and seaweed salad with tobiko. It's the same chirashi don except I substituted tuna for salmon. This is the latest lunch I had on Monday. I went there around 2:30 pm when the place was not crowded. I could tell they took care in presentation better than the last time. SALMON SASHIMI ($9.95) was cut in thick pieces and served on a bed of ice. They also gave some seaweed salad on the side. As I needed some carbs I ordered a DOUBLE SPICY ROLL ($5.95) and TORO NIGIRI SUSHI ($2/each). The roll consisted of cucumber, avocado, spicy salmon inside and topped with spicy crab meat, tempura bits, onion, wasabi mayo and unagi sauce. They let you choose either spicy salmon or spicy tuna. It was pretty decent for the price. Not at all stingy on the portion and great quality food. Momo Sushi is a great place to have quick bites during lunch time as their food comes fast and its generous portion satisfies your hunger. read more
