Probably one of the best chicken katsu I've had in a while (other than in Japan). Meat was tender, flavorful, and succulent, and portions were generous. I think the price was fair at $18 (not cheap, but not exorbitant for the quality). The sushi was about average, but I was pretty disappointed by the tempura. Somehow, never actually visited in person so if you're looking for a review of the restaurant itself, the ambiance or the in person dining service then you're in the wrong place. Fish is always fresh, prices are good - not cheap but not terribly expensive - and perhaps best of all, they come INCREDIBLY quickly compared to almost any other delivery option. My gotos are the salmon lover roll, the chu toro, the rice crisp roll and toro scallion. Love that they offer sides of ginger, eel sauce and spicy mayo - very few seem to let you do sides of anything but ginger and I love having some extra eel sauce around. Review based on a delivery order so cannot comment on the ambiance: I was really craving sushi and was hanging out in the Harlem area so after browsing places for a while, set my heart on Mido. I was not sure what to expect but they offered a few rolls that caught my interest. One thing I noticed about their menu though is that they are very heavy on the spicy tuna/spicy salmon roll options and I wish they had more of a fresh variety with regular fish for some of their specialty rolls (since not all people enjoy spicy food). My food was delivered to the apartment fairly quickly and looked quite aesthetic and intact despite the delivery ordeal! I ordered: -Salmon avocado roll: very nice set of 6 maki rolls. Thought it had a good proportion of salmon to avocado. The fish was fresh and the avocado was silky and delicious. Loved the amount of rice! Didn't feel overpowering but was substantial enough. -Triple X roll: this was good but I probably would not order again to eat alone since I think this roll is better shared. It has a very generous amount of spicy tuna wrapped in soy paper and topped with either fresh salmon or tuna and some spicy Mayo. Since it is very fish heavy and there is no balancing element such as rice, it can become overwhelming very quickly. However, the quality of the fish is very good and the roll itself is filling+ really flavorful. A pretty good option for someone who is avoiding carbs or just wants a ton of protein. Alternatively, good if split between multiple people. Overall, I was very content with the food! Not the absolute best sushi I've had but definitely solid enough to quench my sushi cravings. I have been to this place many times before, but this time I was looking for blue crab and grilled yellowtail collar. They did not have either. However, I ordered shrimp shumai and it was delicious! It's offered daily (even on weekends) from 12-4 and comes with your choice of rolls/sushi, miso soup, salad, and an egg roll. Wine and beer is pretty cheap too, all under $5. This place has surprisingly never been crowded every time I've gone and the service is always fast & attentive. I came here for omakase on a Thursday night for their February anniversary special. Despite being a special, the quality and care spent on each course was just as delicious. The 10 courses included mackerel, blue fin toro, salmon belly, yellowtail belly and more! Even the little details like smoking the salmon, chia jello and sun dried tomatoes made the omakase experience so unique! I was in heaven. The chef did mention that the courses may differ with each omakase experience. I highly recommend sitting at the sushi bar because you learn so much from the sushi chef. My only caveat for this review is that it's based on a delivery order. But even in the best of circumstances I can't see it going above three stars. We ordered delivery last week to my rental as we're in NYC for work right now. Mido was one of the featured sushi restaurants and we were hungry so didn't research much. Now the most important ingredient in sushi is of course the fish, but closer than most would think is the rice. Sushi rice should be fresh, a little warm, and seasoned. The sushi we got had rice that was just warm--not seasoned at all and tasted like it had been in the fridge or some container, not fresh. The fish itself was ok but not anything special. Salmon Don was sad to look at and rice once again not seasoned except with rice seasoning flakes sprinkled on top (note that when I say "seasoned" for the rice I mean with a base of rice vinegar et al) Gyoza were fine. The salad had moments of grittiness like it hadn't been washed thoroughly, which is...disappointing. Anyway, the food here would be good for a small town somewhere but not the UWS of New York where there are nice sushi places every few blocks. They can do better with just a little more attention to quality and freshness. read more
