Tenzan is a Japanese restaurant located in the Upper West Side neighborhood of Manhattan. I was craving sushi and dropped by on a Thursday night. They have outdoor and indoor seating, a bar area, and a dining area upstairs. Ambiance is minimalistic, modern, and sleek with a hint of Japanese flair. Lighting is on the dim side. You can definitely plan a casual date night here - it's not too loud. The menu includes your standard Japanese fare - sushi, sashimi, teriyaki, udon noodles, katsu, etc. They also have a lunch and dinner omakase seating for reasonable prices! They have a full bar and offer sake, beer, wine, and cocktails. I sat at the bar. The bartender was friendly and service was quick. She even let me sample different sake bottles before deciding on the one I wanted to order. I got: *Ginjo Sake $13 - I'm starting to warm up to sake more and more! The ginjo was light and fruity with a smooth, refreshing aftertaste. *Tuna Roll $8 *Spicy Salmon Roll $8 *Maki A Roll Combo: Salmon, Tuna, and Yellowtail Rolls with miso soup $20.50 It wasn't the best sushi I've had, but it was a tasty meal. I can definitely see why this place has 3.5 stars. On the pro side, there's a lot of seating both indoor and outdoor. Service is also excellent. On the negative side, the sushi quality is only about average (the fish doesn't seem especially fresh and their nigiri is mostly rice). For the price, it's about below average. My wife and I went to Tenzan for a quick happy hour drink. We sat at the bar and saw they have BOGO select drinks including draft Sapporo for $7 and Santory for $10. We got the Santory pint and was served to us immediately. The beer was a delicious and smooth tasting beer with hints of barley. For $5 each, this was a steal! I couldn't get enough!! The beef yaki was also super yummy. Very flavorful and full of meat. The noodles were thick and chewy. The pork katsu was also so good. The breading on the outside was so crispy! I would say that the meat itself was a tad bit dry, but I feel like that could be a one-off thing. It has mango on the outside, and apple, avocado and seaweed salad on the inside. Salty, sweet, creamy and crunchy. Peanut avocado roll- $6.25- instead of regular plain or salted peanuts, Tenzan uses honey roasted ones here. I liked this roll but it might not be your thing. The lunch portions here are really generous! I ordered the chicken teriyaki bento box, and it came with chicken, veggies, dumplings, spring rolls, soup, salad, sushi roll, and rice! Sorry if some people found they didn't get served fast enough. Finding staff is always a challenge in recent years. This has been our go-to sushi place for almost 20 years. Took my mom here for her birthday. It was about a 15 to 20 min wait for a table of 3. We ordered so much food lol. For the appetizers we have gyoza, maki maki chicken, shumai, fried calamari, shrimp and vegetables tempura, lobster roll and spicy tuna rolls. Everything was delicious and fresh. The calamari was very crispy super happy cause I hate with soggy calamari. Very happy to try the maki maki chicken. It was very crispy and you could taste all the ingredients. I also had the best miso soup ever here!!! I loathe miso soup but they made me a huge convert. We had saki, margaritas, and sangria for drinks. My margarita was made very well and strong. The sangria was like juice but extremely tasty. The saki was great, warm and cold. For the main course we had Nabe Yaki Udon Soup and Beef Yaki Udon. The soup was everything!! It literally almost as everything in it. The noodles had a great mouth feel and the beef udon had an amazing taste. The service was great and the wait staff was very attentive. 0 stars. I last reviewed this place in November of 2022 and, because I found the food quality to be less than desirable, I indicated I would not return. This afternoon, however, because it is in such a convenient location, I decided to try again and see if there was any improvement. That was a big mistake and, for sure, this time I shall never return. It was 10 times worse than last November. In fact, I found the food to be barely edible. It was the worst sushi and pretty much the worst food I have ever eaten. I have come to the conclusion that the ownership must have changed sometime over the course of the last 2 years. This restaurant used to be very busy and a pleasant place to visit. Now they have basically boarded up the outside area and painted it black, and they have a black shed as well out in the street. During the time I was there, I was the only patron dining outside, and there were 4 people inside. I ordered a large hot sake, miso soup, shrimp shumai, and 2 hand rolls. The sake was the worst sake I have every tasted. Pee would probably taste better. The only good thing was the miso soup. The shumai had very little shrimp, was mushy; and the sauce had too much mustard. The hand rolls were the worst I have ever seen. They were large but poorly constructed, fell apart, and the fish was the cheap smashed up type used for other rolls. They also charged extra for anything added, such as avocado or cucumber. The prices for what you get are ridiculous - total bill with tip was $54. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. With food like that, I don't know how they even manage to stay in business. They have a good amount of outdoor seating during covid-19 times. Our cocktails were so-so, and service was a little slow (but they told us they were having issues in the kitchen so it was sushi only that night). My maki combo was OK, but the three rolls it came with tasted exactly the same so it made for a boring meal. Next time I will try a greater variety and stick with water. We stumbled upon this place while exploring around Central Park. We were absolutely starving and this was the first place that looked ok on Yelp. We were sat quickly upstairs at a nice, big table. Our waitress greeted us immediately and served water. We ordered drinks that returned quickly as well. We placed our orders and our food came out in about 15 minutes. The food was good. It was nothing mind blowing, but good quality for a super reasonable price. When I say reasonable... I mean the cheapest good meal we had in NYC. I can't say what it's like to eat in but I have always had super tasty rolls from Tenzan whenever I go there for take out. I recently went and ordered the rainbow roll and the green river roll. Both were yummy and were filled with tons of fish and flavor. They always give plenty of wasabi and ginger, soy sauce and chop sticks. I came here on a Wednesday early evening, right after work, before a concert at Lincoln Center. The place was clean and spacious. They have a nice outside sitting area with lots of tables so if you like to sit outside when the weather permits, you're in luck. I decided to sit at the bar for a quick small bite to eat and a cocktail. Drink: I ordered the Cosmo. The martini glass was full to the rim as you can see and it was pretty good. Good balance. Food: I ordered the shumai and the Dallas roll. Good news first... the Dallas roll was good. The filling to rice ratio was exceptional. They didn't skimp out on the avocado and the spicy tuna filling. Good job. Now for the shumai, these are not the shrimp dumplings you would find at a dim sum place (which I understand), but these are the frozen kind that you can buy at an Asian grocery store. The quality is a bit less than average. Even though they came out hot (I think they used a steamer to heat these dumplings up which is a lot better than a microwave) however, I would suggest not getting these. Get another appetizer. The sauce that came with dumplings was tasty. Probably the only saving grace for the shumai. Not hating on the shumai just a word of caution. :) Service: The service was good even though it wasn't busy. He was helpful as well as the other staff that were present around the bar. Summary: Just your average sushi place in the UWS. Nothing that really stood out to me. They don't have happy hour which is a disappointing. I have to say I come here quite a bit and I'm really disappointed to share my experience venturing off their sushi menu. My dad and I both ordered teryiaki dishes that were really awful. The teriyaki sauce had absolutely no flavor I honestly wouldn't even call it teriyaki and to make matters worse the meat had no salt, pepper, etc. so it was just bland meat with bland sauce. Do yourself a favor and never venture off the sushi menu over here! Also, the broccoli that came with our teriyaki was also half frozen still. The food still cold also....seemed like it was ready prepared and they just heated it up there was no way that chicken and seafood was fresh off a grill. My daughter and I were looking for Shiro at late hours and stumbled upon Tenzan (shiro appeared to be located in the same building but was closed at the hour we visited). Service was prompt and attentive but the quality of sushi was average at best. They were also parking the delivery bikes within the restaurant and the vibe was mediocre at best. This place has been my go-to sushi spot for what feels like a decade now, and they have consistently delivered on good, affordable sushi. They are mindful of my sesame seed allergy, and very accommodating in the rare occurrences when it slips by them. The sweet potato roll and eel roll are their strongest selections, with just the right balance of sauce to the eel and crispness for the sweet potato. Another thing, don't sleep on their Oyakodon, as it's a generous portion with a lot going on in terms of chicken, rice, and veggies! They've also done an excellent job with their outdoor seating expansion! From what I've seen, they stay safe and distanced. And the heating lamps are a plus. read more

Tenzan is like many of the Chinese-run, faux Japanese places throughout the city that tries to capitalize on the sushi / Japanese food demand. Situated in the UWS, it is one of the many places that offer a contemporary decor, outdoor sidewalk seating, and a bar with cocktails aplenty. On paper it all looks and sounds great, but that is essentially where it ends. The food is mediocre all around. It's not only bland, but the inconsistent presentation and quality makes for poor overall value. It doesn't matter that their sushi platter is only 10 pieces for $21, but there is a problem when no single piece of nigiri stands out. A favorite dish of mine, the ever insurmountable chirashi don (bowl of fresh raw assorted fish over rice) was butchered literally. Bad cuts of fish on a bed of clumpy rice made for $22 not well spent. It's okay. Sometimes restaurants tend to do better with hot food than raw food. On the heels of a recommendation from the wait staff, I went for a seafood udon ($17) and a friend of mine went for tempura udon ($14), both of which were epic fails. The seafood was overcooked, the noodles were tough, and the broth was a bit too salty. I liked the way the tempura was presented, but was not a fan of biting into the sweet potato, only to find it hard and more dry on the inside than its crunchy exterior. No dice. Finally, the service will vary as always - but the last couple of times they've been a little pushy during the orders and were asked on more than one occasion about why no drinks (sake, cocktails, etc.) were ordered. Add to the fact one time the menus were sticky and smelled *horribly* from being wiped by the same towel and then closed until the next person opened it up - allowing whatever was inside to permeate for awhile. A smelly menu is never a good way to start any meal. read more
