I would say this is a hidden gem, but it sits on a well traveled corner and seems to be popular with the locals. We are traveling through and glad we came this way! I want so badly to give this restaurant a 5 star recommendation. I've heard wonderful things about it for years. Sadly, it didn't live up to expectations. The service was friendly and quick. The food portions were very generous. The taste was okay for the most part. We had the chicken fried steak and the fried chicken. The fried chicken breast was frozen in the middle and super crispy (but not burnt) on the outside. One serving of the "homemade" potatoes had a marble-sized chunk of rotten, black potato. (Really gross) The server was very apologetic and even gave us a discount on the meal. Bottom-line would I go back? I think I would. I've had so many people say how good they are. Traveling highway 50 from Colorado to Tahoe I was trying to find a local business for dinner. I did not consult Yelp before we walked in the door, what a mistake. Mom's was dirty, run down and expensive. I ordered fish and chips for $18.00 and received bland chips with 4 pieces of fish each barely larger than a McNugget. My kids did not finish their fries which was in itself unprecedented. I can't imagine the cost of living/rent/property in this rundown crossroads town is very high, why would dining prices need to be so extreme? Answer - to rip off unsuspecting tourists like me. Don't be lured in by the apparent historical significance of this business, Mom's famous home cooking can only be found in the past, her good name is now quite useful however, in separating tourists from the maximum amount of dollar's possible. read more

I think it's safe to say that we all envision a cross-country drive to involve cruising down picturesque roads while exploring fascinating sites along the way. Stopping at quaint restaurants for a one-of-a-kind experience is no doubt part of the mystique. I'm sad to say that most of middle American does not live up to that fantasy, at least when it comes to food. Despite having the modern convenience of my iphone and Yelp app in hand, it was remarkable how often I had to settle for some chain affair -- Subway, Applebees, etc. Even when I went off the beaten path, the best I could find were regional chains that hadn't yet gone national. It was something, I guess, but no where near what I was hoping for. Then, after being reinvigorated by a night in Bryce Canyon, I drove languidly through Utah and stopped in Salina. (Question, when Janis Joplin sings of Salina in Bobby McGee, is that Salina KS or Salina UT?) This place is what you imagine Main Street USA to look like -- small mom and pop stores, antiquated places like a video rental store (take that Netflix/iTunes). And at the heart of that quaint intersection is Mom's Cafe. When I walked in, I immediately felt like a foreigner -- in a good way -- the way a visitor 2000 miles from home ought to feel. People here were different (not good or bad, just different) and for once I could feel like I was somewhere I had never been before. I sat at the counter and ordered food, oddly aware that I was the only person eating alone who didn't look like a middle-aged trucker. I ordered a hamburger and fries. The burger was good enough and the fries a bit soggy. I didn't care so much, though. I was somewhere different and that was good enough for me.... So much so that I ordered some pie for good measure. I've read the other reviews a little, but I've stopped. They're cramping my style. My waitress was plenty kind. Not all of America puts on a smile when you walk in the door. Some people have business to attend to and don't try to sweeten you up with fluff. You're here for food. Oh Mom's... You've been here forever. (Literally. Like a hundred years. Can't remember exactly but the story is on their menu.) Food is decent... I think we ordered the wrong thing the last time we ate here. We got broiled chicken. I guess we were figuring small town food, how could fried chicken be bad? It was pretty bad. Again, I just think we ordered the wrong thing. The chicken was bland, like they didn't season it. I wasn't really a fan of their mashed potatoes either... but they had white gravy on them that had big bits of sausage in it. Pretty cool! Homemade! Their scones however... OMIGOSH! SO GOOD. However, it's not what most people would think a scone would be. My mom called it indian fry bread. She was right... Slightly sweet and flat like fry bread. Yum. I think this type of "scone" is typical to the area. They had a salad bar that was interesting. Typical iceberg lettuce and that was about it for fresh veggies. They had canned peas out and beets. I'm not a pea fan and also not so much a fan of canned veggies. However, I'm told that's pretty typical, too. They had good marinated mushrooms though! Also, they had a "salad" that was more like a dessert than a salad. My family eats these kind of "salads." They're made with jello! Normally I'm not that big a fan of these type of "salads." It was made with pistachio pudding, pistachios, pineapple, and whipped cream. I actually liked it! I think it was at that point I told my mother (who I was on a road trip with) that we'd been in Utah too long. HA! It's a good place to stop and my family's eaten here since forever. Okay, I agree with the less than stellar reviews this place got. I went here last summer (yes, it was that bad that I remember) and was very disappointed with both the food and the service. 1. The older woman that served us (Mom?) acted like she didn't want to serve us at all, like it was a big inconvenience to her. She forgot to bring my drink and tried her best to ignore us. Let it be known, my husband, brother-in-law and I look like average joes, so its not like we are bizarre-looking strangers with tattoos and piercings galore. 2. There were children working in the kitchen. When "Mom" went back there it seemed that she was busy managing a daycare. 3. The food was not what I would expect from a local cafe/diner. I ordered the hot roast beef sandwich. I wasn't expecting gourmet food, but I've eaten at truck stops that served delicious, down home comfort food. The bread was heated in a toaster, the meat looked like it came from a can. Kinda icky. I really like minimizing the amount of fast food I eat when driving across country, but in this case, fast food would have been tasted better and wouldn't feel like a rip-off. If you decide to eat here, make sure you catch "Mom" on a good day. Also, don't believe everything you read in a guidebook. read more

Mmmm, there's no finer diner...with scones. It's in the middle of nowhere (sorry, Salina), but if you're traveling between Northern Utah and anywhere south, this is a great place to hit up. Very charming place, and a great place for both locals and passers-by. I think they even take credit cards, though it's a few years since I've been there. On our way to Colorado we found this beautiful town and diner to eat. The food was awesome and the service was great. My husband had the country fried steak & said it was the best ever. Wow, what a depressing place. My fiance and I stopped here, lured by a roadside sign that promised something different than Denny's or McDonalds. In retrospect, we should have kept going. When I asked the waitress how she was doing, she did not reply...I thought she didn't hear me, so when she came back with our food, I asked her again...nothing. I started feeling like I was in a horror film where if you stay after dark, you get hunted by inbred freaks...it was that unwelcoming. I suppose the restaurant is a reflection of the town itself, which appears to be a run-down, dead-end kind of place. I couldn't wait to leave. Unfortunately, the experience was not mitigated by the food itself, which was mediocre, even by diner standards. Strangely, the place was packed, and I have no idea why. In the end, I felt a little compassion for the waitresses there, as they all looked like lifers with a lot of broken dreams. But not enough compassion to ever go back. read more

I had been here a few years before and it was fairly good. Not great, but I remember getting a satisfying and wholesome meal. It was good enough that I wanted to return some day. Lots of my friends have been there and have always been satisfied. Where else would you eat in Salina? Since then, "Mom" retired and the place has changed hands. The food is now execrable. It appears that the new owner has trimmed food costs to below what is necessary. A nearly empty restaurant during (what should have been) the dinner rush and an absence of locals shows a restaurant that that will (or should) be put of of its misery. I ordered the Broasted Chicken, which comes with canned (not frozen) corn, a "scone" (actually a sopapilla) and a miniscule scoop of mashed potatoes topped with white gravy. No matter what the old menu claims, this chicken arrives from their supplier (Sysco or wherever) frozen and breaded. They only throw frozen, prepared pieces into the pressure fryer and then serve. And don't, whatever you do, read the ingredients in the bottles of "butter & honey" concoction that are to be used with the "scones". Would it be too much to serve actual butter and honey? The service as fast, fine and friendly, so don't even think of faulting the staff for the problems; they are *all* at the top. Whomever ruined this venerable restaurant should be deeply ashamed. Each meal includes a scone as well. The food was fine but not good enough for us to return. Service was acceptable but not stellar. Price was reasonable. Heading out to the national parks on 70 West. Got hungry. And got wicked lucky. The next stop was Salina, Utah and we were just going to grab fast food. I just thought we should head down the road a little ways to look for a hidden gem. Boy did we find it. Honestly, the outside isn't the most appealing thing, but I'm an optimistic and have been to plenty of places that have food good enough, they don't need to worry about "dolling up" the outside. We went in and I immediately knew we made the right decision because of the little salad bar they have. All I needed to see was the egg salad. It looked like I had to have it. So I peeked over the menu, and saw that the lunch options come with the salad bar and a "home made scone". I don't know what happened next, but it was all a food coma induced, taste bud blowing moment. The potato salad was indeed homemade and everything I knew it would be. My chicken fingers came with corn and real mashed potatoes with homemade gravy...and that scone. Now that scone isn't like the hard nasty pastry you get from Starbucks. This thing was made from scratch with love...lots of love and then fried ever so slightly to perfection. It could have been mixed with mashed potatoes and gravy or had blueberries put on it. So versatile! I know, because I had all of the above with. It should be known that you can purchase a postcard with the scone recipe on it. Good luck perfecting that. They are also famous for a pie that can not be beat. Ever. I'll say it again. Can't be beat. I don't like pie. But I had this one not once, but twice. We actually went well out of our way to stop here for breakfast on the way BACK through to Denver. I won't get into that...it's a long, hunger inducing story, I had country fried steak that blew my mind. And I knew it would. But back to the pie. Some kind of blueberry sour cream/cream cheese concoction with a separate whipped sweet cream they put on top. There are no words. Jut do yourself a favor and head about a mile off the exit. Oh, Mom's. A slice of someone else's home in the middle of nowhere, Utah. If you're planning on trekking far off the I-15 to visit this place, don't. But, if you're passing through Salina looking for a wholesome meal from a place that is not a gas station, this is your stop. Mom's offers standard diner fare: never ending cups of coffee, eggs, burgers and the like. The food was well seasoned, but not memorable. Prices are reasonable. What makes this place unique is the clientele. Salina is a tiny town in a remote area of Utah. When we stepped in the place, we were immediately greeted by a roomful of locals. Real life cowboys, complete with hats, taking a rest, sharing stories over cups of coffee. It was like stepping back in time. There are no gabby customers on cell phones here. Mom's is an apt name, because the restaurant seemed to be populated entirely by shrieking children and crying babies. Judging from the other reviews, ordering the scone is the thing to do but, alas, sometimes you see the other reviews too late. The breakfast menu is about as limited and uninspired as a breakfast menu can be and the abandoned food on neighboring tables looked heavy and bland: limpid eggs, pyramids of barely-touched biscuits and gravy that had the color of volcanic ash and the consistency of a blood clot. A quick bowl of oatmeal seemed like a safe, light breakfast snack. Unfortunately, what arrived was a cup of shredded, wet newspaper in which warm and cold blobs jockeyed for position like high and low pressure zones on a weather map. Are you familiar with the windshield-cleaning squeegees at gas stations? Do you know how they're always floating in opaque gray water choked with dead moths? If you can imagine drinking from that reservoir you can imagine eating Mom's oatmeal. It's the kind of oatmeal you bomb with salt because then, at least, it will taste like salt. And salt is something--it's enough to remind you that you haven't died. A particle of cinnamon, a single raisin, a withered tentacle of apple would have gone so far and taken so little effort, but it was too much to ask. Even cream or milk or something--anything--with flavor was impossible to secure. The waitress/daycare attendant kept forgetting to bring it to our table because her daughter was wandering the restaurant with a bloody nose. With tax and a tip (not deserved, but obligatory), that bowl of soggy despair cost $5.50. So you could get the scone... or try your luck with lunch... or try your luck somewhere else. read more

The BEST chicken-fried steak I've ever had. The best, the best! OMG the perfect gravy, the crisp breading, the tender cube steak, mashed potatoes...I ordered the cheeseburger and also ate half of my partner's plate. How was the cheeseburger? Delicious! Whenever I eat at a diner, I'm hoping this is how good it will be. I'm usually disappointed, but this was like finding the Holy Grail of diner food. And Utah Scones!! What is a "Utah Scone"? I'd never had one before, so I would describe it as similar to a funnel cake, but in a single patty of fried batter instead of the lacy version. Delicious. Squirt "honey butter" (main ingredients are neither honey nor butter) on like frosting and YUM. I repeat, this is not health food. Service was fast, a tad perfunctory (so what), food came out quickly, was hot and DELICIOUS. I must point out that a previous one-star reviewer was disappointed because the food isn't like it would be in Europe ('cause she knows!), aaannd gave five stars to a highway Waffle House. If you "know how it's supposed to be" at a place like this, then you'll LOVE IT. I'm sure the menu has pitfalls, but the classics seem to be as good as they get. This place has fallen off it's pedestal and it is nothing to crow about anymore. I even was feeling offalish and ordered the "fresh" liver. It was NOT like the liver I have had in Italy or New York. My mistake for ordering a dish like this in a hash hut I guess. My BF had the roast pork, the gravy was fake or just not made well. We ordered cherry pie and the pie crust was disgustingly breadish. This is our second time stopping here between St George and Manti. The first time we were a little nervous because we typically are not fans of old time cafés. We were impressed the first time, and so we came again with our kids. Everything we ordered was good. It's good, home cooked food. Fresh made French fries, hand made burgers. Great flavor. Not worth the price. Not worth the taste. Based on the positive reviews, we tried Mom's Cafe. We ordered our plates to-go. We had a mushroom Swiss burger with fries and a country fried steak dinner. The burger was about the size of McDonald's cheeseburger and was bland with very few mushrooms (forgot to take a pic). There were two pieces of onion and one tomato slice on the side. The fries were ok. The country fried steak dinner was definitely not worth the $13.99 price. The country fried steak was a breaded hamburger patty covered in white gravy. The fresh vegetable was half of a corn on the cob. The mashed potatoes were instant (not enough salt) and was given the amount of a small ice cream scoop. The side salad was ok. It had beets, half a boiled egg, peas, croutons, and typical greens. The salad was like what I may make at home. Needless to say, I won't be back to Moms Cafe when passing through Salina heading to the Canyons. read more
