We stopped by No Frills Grill for a quick bite recently, and it was fantastic. I ordered the Caesar salad topped with fried calamari--a dish I first fell in love with a few years ago--and it definitely didn't disappoint! My husband went with the fried flounder fish and chips; the portion was massive and perfectly prepared. Even the coleslaw was delicious, which says a lot since I'm very particular about it. My wife was invited here by her coworkers, and she decided to take me along. We were celebrating one of her coworker's birthday. Her coworkers ordered the artichoke dip, and I was surprised at how many times I went in for more. I probably ate half of the dish myself. I asked the server what side he recommended and he recommended the fries. I asked him what seasoning was on the fries and I don't think he knew. Let me tell you, those fries needed some Cajun or some kind of seasoning on them, in my opinion. The London broil gyro, however, was very flavorful. I felt like I got good value for what I paid. I'm glad I don't live closer because I would come here too much! Our family who lives in Virginia Beach suggested this spot when I said I wanted seafood while at a track meet at the sports center. Boy, they did NOT steer me wrong. This unassuming metal diner-like building could easily be overlooked for the gem inside. We were greeted warmly and seated immediately. Nicole, our server, was the absolute best! I started with a pomegranate lemon drop. I'm not a fan of pomegranate but this cocktail was very tasty. It's a tad tart but that's why I love lemon drops. I chose the seafood trilogy with coleslaw and black bean salsa for my late lunch/early dinner. That had to be the best thing on the menu. The flounder was thick and fried to perfection. The shrimp were huge and also fried perfectly. The crab cake was void of much filler and was great with the best remoulade I think I've ever had. I was taken aback that the salsa was cold initially but the flavor made up for the shock in temperature. The coleslaw was also good. I did not have room to touch the cornbread. This is my 2nd time visiting this restaurant, and they did not disappoint! This place was bustling during dinner rush, though luckily we got seated right away. We tried our their fish & Chips, Seafood trilogy and cheeseburger. Everything was cooked perfectly and all of the seafood tasted fresh. The portion was huge that you could easily have a leftover for another meal. Despite the place being busy and quite loud, I would say it is a perfect spot for a family dinner or a date. First time at this location after being at their Norfolk restaurant many times with great success. My visit fell on the 4th of July on an abbreviated work day for them. Service up front and through the entire service was excellent by Kelli. They had a specials menu that my wife and I skipped. The regular menu is pretty deep with cocktails and wine offered. We liked the dining room which also offered a bar. It's a great place for groups with ability to pull tables together. My wife decided on a chicken pita with coleslaw that she enjoyed. Mine was a Philly cheese steak with a bourbon smash. The cocktail was yum, the sandwich was not what I expected as you can see by my pic. Slices of Kraft American cheese on top was disappointing to say the least. The taste of the meat was quite good. But it was also a lot of bread. Would not order again. Close out was strong by Kelli and the overall prices in line with what I see in other establishments. 3.5 rounding down. I didn't dine in but did takeout yesterday so I can't speak to the ambiance of the restaurant. I ordered the amazing chicken and subbed out the quinoa for mashed potatoes only because I don't like red peppers. The chicken really was amazing! The cheese paired well with the balsamic vinaigrette. The broccoli and mashed potatoes were perfect! The portions were so big for everything, I had a whole meal as leftovers. We've been here several times before and the food has been good. This time was different though. The food wasn't very tasty at all and we were disappointed. The portobello appetizer was okay. The meatloaf was dry and tasteless, the sauce tasted like old ketchup. The green beans tasted like they had freezer burn. The mashed potatoes were very good and the only saving grace on the plate. The corn bread was also very bitter and mealy. The waygu salisbury steak was decent. All in all we didn't eat more than a few bites from either entree because it wasn't worth eating. Daily specials with an extensive menu-took us some time to decide what to order. That said, we started with a couple of Draft Brews. A brown and lighter Ale. Also, a Rum & Coke. For appetizer, it was the Grande Nachos-perfect size for sharing (4). Their famous Chili was tasty. For main, Fish and Chips (crispy and light), Crab Cakes (ok-tough customers from MD), BBQ beef Quesadillas (special-very good), and Crispy Chicken Salad (tasty Tenders). We were together for a girls day out and one of us knew about this place so she suggested that we dine here while another of us suggested we do so before the prime lunch hour hit so we could secure perfect seats. At 11:30 am, all five of us were able to peruse the menu at our leisure and order our drinks then our meals. Goodness gracious the portions were so huge that I couldn't finish my meal and neither could any of the three other friends. One friend was smart and ordered just a cup of chili so of course she finished it. My crab cake sandwich was so delicious, mainly crab and just enough filler to keep it together with a side of sauted spinach. So lovely to see spinach untainted by cream but I was too full to enjoy it. The restaurant from the outside looks like an old fashioned diner, but the inside is pretty modern! We were greeted by many smiling faces and seated quickly upon arrival. The restaurant was pretty noisy at dinnertime, but nothing crazy. We put in our appetizer order of Buffalo Shrimp. For my entree I chose the veggie burger, along with fries and mac and cheese. My friend got the BBQ pulled pork sandwich with mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. The food came out fairly quickly. The buffalo shrimp were crispy, spicy, and delicious. There was plenty of yummy buffalo sauce coating the freshly fried shrimp, and dipping it in the cool ranch was delightful! Blue cheese dressing was also served with it, which my friend enjoyed. However, I'm definitely a ranch gal. My veggie burger was pretty good. The veggie burger is made from actual veggies and isn't really a meat imitation. The patty wasn't the best I've had, but the melty cheese, crisp veggies, and tomato aioli were a great addition to the burger. I really like their fries! And their mac and cheese was gooey and delicious. Everything was served piping hot and fresh. My friend enjoyed her BBQ pulled pork sandwich. It is piled high with hand-pulled pork and topped with BBQ sauce. The sandwich is served with coleslaw, along with the sides she picked out. She was a big fan of the mac and cheese as well. After our hearty meals, we were stuffed with no room for dessert! But hopefully next time, I will give that a try. Overall, the food was good but came out to be pretty expensive. I definitely miss the original No Frill Grill that was next to the Philly shop 20+ years ago off Tidewater. It was the BEST!!!! This NFG is good and the atmosphere is definitely more fancy than the original, but it's still good. Just prefer the old style relaxed version. read more

Wow!! I really need to put this place on my radar and go more often. There is plenty of parking. I went during the week for lunch and got there around 11:45. Thankfully. 20 minutes later EVERY table was full. EVERY table!! Awesome service. It was tough to decide.... so many great options but I decided on the pita with Grilled Tuna. It was delicious. It was huge! I got a Mediterranean Quinoa Salad for the side. Loved it. My friend got a sandwich and liked it. Very generous portion of sandwich and easily enough for us to both share with loads of turkey. The salad I chose, The Spotswood, was sooooo good. I devoured it and hated to share it, haha! It consisted of baby spinach, apples, bleu cheese crumbles, bacon, caramelized almonds & raisins, red onions, radishes, cucumbers, red peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, pita wedges for $14. Great size as well. My in-laws ordered the Grilled Portabella App - sauteed baby spinach, onions, tomatoes, sun-dried tomato pesto, Provolone cheese over crostinis drizzled with balsamic glaze for $12. SOOOO good! My steak in my pita sandwich was over cooked and had no flavor but the menu said it was marinated? The bill was $173 and it might've been the worst food I've had in Virginia Beach. The other night, a couple of friends and I went out to eat dinner at No Frill Grill in Virginia Beach. We had a great time. The dinner was excellent. We all enjoyed our meals and we each had a drink. We had a lot of fun as we had not seen each other in a long time. It was a Saturday night, but it really was not that busy there. I have no complaints about the evening until it came to the end. Our waitress was wonderful until the very end and I know it's not her fault. It's apparently the restaurants policy that when it came time to pay the bill, they bring over their device and make you pay right there. It really made for a very uncomfortable time for me. I'm not sure how my friends felt but for me I was very uncomfortable. I'm used to at the end of the meal having the waiter or waitress bring me a itemized bill with what the total is so I can look at it and make sure everything is right. Then they come back later and collect your credit card and bring back your slip to sign (the merchant copy) and the customer copy. That's what I'm used to. That's what I like. I am fine with that. But what happened was when it came time to pay the bill she brought over the itemized receipt and then just stood there and stared at us. She asked if we were ready to pay and we said yes, but so we pulled out our credit cards instead of her, taking them back and running them through she held out the device that makes us pay right there at the table. That really disrupted our good time and ruined the evening for me. It's ridiculous that they interrupt conversations and pressure you by staring at you. We all had to stop what we were doing and watch each other pay our tabs while the waitress just stares at us. It is no one's business how much my bill is and how much tip I leave. It really does ruin a very, very good evening when they check you out in this manner. I do not want to stop everything I'm doing and interact with that stupid machine. I don't wanna do it. It's just not relaxing. It's not comfortable. It's not enjoyable at all. Because of this payment method, it really did ruin the end of the evening for me. Even though the food was amazing, I will probably not go back to No Frill Grill again. The only way I will is if I'm ordering takeout and I'm not sitting there in the restaurant. I don't mind paying with that contraption if I'm just grabbing my food and going. I do not want to pay with that while the waitress stands there and stares at me while I'm trying to think about how much I wanna leave tip wise. So despite the food being great and the service is being great until that check out episode, which is not the waitress's fault, that's just the way the restaurant does it. I will not go back and eat there because of that. My nice relaxing evening was ruined. When I left there, I was no longer relaxed. I was no longer comfortable. I had this happen once before at a restaurant I really loved and I have not been back since. Restaurants need to stop doing this BS method of check out. We have come here while looking for a place to move into to actually picking up our child when her baby sitter was celebrating her graduation/ birthday gathering. Yep. Hubby and I had a date night during the time our sitter's graduation and birthday. All the years that we have visited here, this place is a solid go to place. Synopsis: An absolutely great diner with tasty food, great service, and decent prices. My girlfriend and I were in town for a concert at the nearby venue, Elevation 27, and decided to stop by No Frill Bar and Grill for some good food before the show. We were instantly seated and attended two within a minute. The menu has plenty to choose from and we decided on an app first. The loaded nachos by themself could have been a meal.
