Came to this restaurant after hearing it from word of mouth and decided to give it a go with my wife. We had called ahead the day of on a Saturday and the hostess who answered said she was able to accompany us. A couple hostesses standing in the front greeted us with a warm smile, which made us feel very welcome. We were seated right away, despite our late reservation. Our table was larger than we needed, which gave us plenty of room for appetizers, drinks, and our entrees. Within a few minutes of being seated, our waitress, whose name was Robin, arrived to take orders for our drinks. Rather than getting a simple coke, I decided to try something new off of their specialty drinks and wine list. My wife chose a martini called 944, which was quite tasty. I ordered the Asian Pear, which was a delicious pear and peach flavored drink. The busboys also brought us a glass of ice cold water each to accompany our drinks. Robin came back to check up on us and even though we needed more time to choose our dinners and appetizers, she did not rush us and smiled politely. When we were ready, she noticed and even answered our questions and suggested a few of her favorite dishes. She gave us great input on the food. Not long after, our appetizers came out, piping hot, but delicious. The sizzling rice soup at Mon Jin Lau is fantastic. The broth, shrimp, chicken, and the crunchy sizzling rice on top makes the soup perfect. We also ordered a crab cake appetizer, which came right after we finished our soup. It was soft in the inside, but had a crunchy breading on the outside. The spicy mayo on top added a nice zest to the crab cakes. For our entrees, I ordered the Asian Filet Mignon, which came out tender, and juicy. It wasn't too overcooked, or undercooked and the sauce paired with the filet really made it. My wife ordered the Sesame Salmon which had a fresh smell to it when Robin placed it in front of her. Our drinks were always refilled, and the busboys cleared our tables quickly. The busboys also offered to pack up our dinners, which we did! It ended up being delicious even as leftovers! Saving room for dessert, Robin came out with an array of desserts all neatly placed on a tray. She named each one and we decided to eat the White Chocolate Mousse and the Cream Puff. They were amazing. Right after we finished, we were given our bill, and Robin thanked us for coming and to hopefully see us again soon. She was very friendly, would come check up on us, and made sure all of our expectations were met. I'm glad I decided to give this restaurant a try because it is now one of mine as well as my wife's favorite restaurants! We celebrated my niece's graduation at Mon Jin Lau this evening, and it was a wonderful experience. Our party of nine received excellent service throughout the night. Our waitress was attentive, friendly, and welcoming, and the manager checked in several times to make sure everything was going well. They also surprised my niece with a beautiful "Graduation Sushi" platter that made the celebration even more special. Owner Bryan stopped by our table as well, reflecting the hospitality that has made this restaurant such a longtime success. The food was equally impressive. From the appetizers to the sushi, noodles, and entrees, every dish was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The spicy tuna crispy rice, lettuce wraps, gyoza, spring rolls, scallion noodles, seafood spicy noodles, Pad Thai, Dragon Roll, Mon Jin Lau fried rice, and even the lychee martinis were all outstanding. More importantly, there wasn't a single dish that disappointed. The entire spread was excellent. What stands out most about Mon Jin Lau is its consistency. In an industry where maintaining quality over decades is incredibly difficult, Mon Jin Lau continues to deliver exceptional food, outstanding service, and memorable experiences. The restaurant's longevity is no accident. It is a reflection of the care, professionalism, and hospitality that every member of the team brings to their guests. As Chicago residents, we're fortunate to have access to some of the country's best restaurants. Mon Jin Lau could easily hold its own among many of the top-tier establishments in the city. The quality of the food, the warmth of the service, and the attention to detail throughout the evening were truly that good. Food, quite good. Ambiance, less than average. Service, poor. Food was good and plentiful. However, the restaurant should remove some tables so you may get to your table without interrupting others eating. It is so tight you will find yourself asking others to scoot so you can walk by. The dining area is loud and warm as well. Service, it was 3 hours for a party of 8. At the end of dinner service, the wait staff spilled a beer one me. Now that does happen, but the way they handled it could have been better. We had to ask for extra napkins so I could dry out. They offered to buy me another beer, but it wasn't my beer that was spilled one me. The GM, came to apologize and brought me a piece of complementary carrot cake. At that point dinner was ruined. I wanted to leave and change clothes. When the bill came, our less than attentive waitress, added insult to injury when she charged me for two beers instead of the one I had. At $8.50 each, you tend to notice these things. When the bill was corrected she apologized to another member of the dinner party, not to me who was over charged. Bottom line, food good, pack your patience, watch your bill, and don't expect great service to go with the 18% mandatory gratuity. read more

Wednesday nights at MJL are the best! I went there for Mon Jin Lau's Geisha event, which was fun! Entrees were half off for all ladies for the event, which made the evening so much better! Shanghai Wednesdays are always the best for a night out with a group of friends or with your significant other. It's a nice relaxation during the middle of the week! We sat at the bar and Nikki took care of us!! ordered a bunch of different appetizers and entrees, which was more than enough! The spring rolls, crispy szechuan squid, crab rangoon, and lettuce wraps were delicious. We also ordered sushi like the Salmon on the beach roll, red dragon roll, kamikaze, and the sunshine roll. There's no other place you can get great food and sushi like this!! The sushi here is definitely one of a kind. Entrees consisted of Kalbi, shrimp with lobster sauce, and sesame chicken. All came out nice and hot, each with a distinct flavor that made me want more! My family has been going to Mon Jin Lau for years! My parents went all the time when we were younger, and now my sister and I are going. It's crazy that a restaurant has been around so long to transfer generations. Must speak well to the quality that they have there! The food is outstanding. Their Chilean Sea Bass, and Chili Pepper Calamari are my absolute favorites. The Salmon on the Beach is probably my favorite Sushi Roll, along with the Great Wall. I just found out that you can get their Sushi at Nino Salvaggios...which is awesome because it's right by work! The only negative I can say is sometimes the bar gets really busy, and you can't really stand and get a drink because you feel like you are hovering over people that are sitting at the bar. Mon Jin Lau is one of my all time favorite restaurants. Consistently excellent. That's probably why they have been around for over 40 Years. All the waitstaff are veterans, having been there ever since I've been going...not a lot of waitstaff turnover, which means their employees seem happy...or they make good money :) Food is always outstanding...no matter what I get. I usually get the Mongolian Beef, side of Brown Rice and the Sizzling Rice Soup. The menu is very large, so sometimes I'll change it up. Word has it the owner's two younger boys started a younger night on Wednesdays...havent been able to check it out yet, but heard from people sitting around me at the bar that a lot of celebrities while in town, and local athletes come here on Wednesdays. Went here with a group of co-workers after work, and I must say their Ginger Garlic Eggplant is a MUST-HAVE. We did Happy Hour and everything we ordered was great! The sushi, Bali Maki, Tuna Tataki, Ginger Garlic Eggplant, and Sliders were my favorite. Food came out nice, hot, and fresh, and everything was flavored really well. Had a Tsingtao beer and loved it. Service was nice there - the hostess made us feel welcome when we walked in, and our waitress was always kind enough to ask us how we were doing. I wish MJL would focus more on food and modernize their menu. This place could be something great but instead of focusing on the food, it focuses on promoting sleazy douchers and girls that look like they are from South Beach in the 90's. Their promos are tacky and the place needs a whole new vibe. Their menu is nice and lengthy, and I dig the sushi specials but their menu could use an update.... I think they need a PR makeover. Wow, all I can say is Wow! Had the pleasure of trying Mon Jin Lau for the first time even though I've passed by it a million times. The outside of the Restaurant doesn't really do it justice, but when you get in, it's a gorgeous space....great decor, but still very cozy. The music was awesome, loved it. The food was outstanding, had some Sushi appetizers and the Ming Shrimp, recommended by the waitress. To die for. Then for an entree, had the Sesame Chicken....best I've ever had. Seriously. We had dinner tonight. The food and service was excellent. This restaurant is high end Asian Cuisine. Unfortunately, our experience was tainted by a group of diners who complained very openly. The Manager, Mike made two trips to this table and was clearly frustrated. Guests who dine out at higher end restaurants need to respect the diners around them who are paying top dollar to enjoy a nice meal. I LOVE this restaurant... Their sushi is amazing.. especially their specialty rolls. It is a little pricey, but it is delicious and well worth it! Definitely try the spring rolls, as well. The only con is that it's a little loud there.. but that's what happens when you go to a place that's so lively and upbeat :) I am definitely coming back here again! Came here for my birthday because Mon Jin Lau never disappoints! We made a reservation via the Yelp Guest Manager platform & it was needed because MJL hops. We had a delicious Pinot noir and salad with a delicious tangy sesame dressing. I had crispy orange beef with broccoli and it was perfect. My dinner companion is a vegetarian and she had a vegetarian dish (that eludes me now, but she loved it) Out waitress was attentive, the vibe was great, the food was delicious. I have to admit that I went to this place with some pretty high standards, and all in all, I really felt that it was a waste of time. Maybe I just went on a "off night". However, I was there with a group of 8 girls, and we all pretty much felt the same way. The soups were boring, there was a stray hair in entree, and the later that we were there, the crowd seemed to get quite douche baggy. If you send it back you don't know if they're going to do something nasty to your food because apparently they don't care about their customers if they're sending out below par food. The spring roll is good, nothing to write home about, but the Pad Woonsen was fantastic. So flavorful and the portion is great for the price. Service was great, friendly and fast for my whole trip. Will certainly be going back.
