We've only ever ordered items from their happy hour and happy ending menus, but we've enjoyed everything we've had. We always say we'll go for a dinner menu item, as they look, smell, and sound delicious, but we end up ordering our favorite rolls off the happy hour menus. The salmon on the beach roll is our favorite, and an overall favorite of their patronage, and the Great Wall roll is awesome. Food is good....however, look forward to being crammed in any spot that's available. We sat in the bar area where we were seated at a table for two. Not a problem, except the area should have only had two tables rather than three. No room at all. My husband sat in a chair that was so hard he was hurting when we left. Went in and ordered chicken broccoli & a side order of gyoza. What, gyoza! Yeah, that was one of my indicators that MJL was going to be Americanized Chinese. Sometimes that's good as I'm not authentic Asian either (3d generation Chinese-Japanese on both sides), and sometimes it's really bad. The order soon came and I took it home. When I opened up the container, it looked pretty and smelled pretty good. Taste matched that impression. Total for two items came out under $25, on the high side of average. One of the best Chinese/Asian Restaurants around in the Metro Detroit area. I have been coming here for several years. I have got to know the staff and manager Zoran! He is an absolute sweetheart! For our birthday he sent over a platter of desserts. Like come-on how sweet and cute is that ?! Obviously so many people just adore us!!! I usually stick to the chicken broccoli with won ton soup ! You cannot go wrong with that. They are very neat and clean. I know a ton of people go here for the Shanghai Wednesday. I have yet to attend one, but doesn't mean that isn't in my future. I really wasn't a fan of this place. My friend had been begging me to go because she likes to go here on wednesdays for the latin night or whatever but usually I like to do other stuff on wednesday nights. I finally agreed and met her here. The parking lot was literally tiny and packed so I had to get the valet parking because I literally would not have been able to park otherwise. I'm not a fan of valet parking so this was kind of a turn off for me. Then we wait outside in line even though we were on time for the reservation and the vibe was so "new money". Girls were wearing high heels and guys in suits, it was just weird. When we got there, it was beyond loud and crowded. I could barely hear my friend in there and then the sushi I got was so blah and it was $13. After eating, we went to the dance floor and it was just a tiny carpeted area around other tables of people. They didn't even play latin music and the place was so crowded to the point where people were pushing other people out the way so they could go where they needed to go. Have been going here on and off for years. They obviously have been hit by the staffing shortage, and only half the restaurant was open. They had a note on the table to be patient with staff, which we were, we were in no hurry, but then the note said you have 90 minutes to eat. Kind of a double standard. Service was slow, but efficient. Food was good as usual. We tipped at 22% for two couplers each having bills over $110 to support the staff that seemed over worked and tired. $19.75 for Almond boneless chicken, which is $4-$6 more than other restaurants, and you had to pay for a scoop of rice separate. Really ? Literally no one received rice with their way above average priced meals. That's just not right. It will be a long time before we go back 3 stars for the hard working staff and food. When you are in the mood for a wide variety of sushi Mon Jin Lau never disappoints! Excellent selection of food and drinks. The bartenders are generous the Lemon Drop Martini is my favorite. We also choose a high quality saki from an extensive selection. The sesame chicken is my favorite and the seafood dishes , such as the Bass, are popular. The wait staff are very accommodating and eager to please the customer. The last time we visited, they were out of our go to saki, we shared our disappointment and believe it or not they offered to run out and pick it up! Overrated for me, every time. This place is consistently good for apps, but nothing more. I will only eat the apps, they are usually good and tasty, but every time I have ordered an entree, it is always bland, boring and tasteless, not to mention over priced for the lack of quality in the food. I think this is simply a joint to see and be seen and not much more, because the food is sub-par. Don't come here for anything more than the ambiance, which is stellar. Food is just okay and the atmosphere is very dated. Not sure how the charge the food that much. This is what bothered me: They brought a wrong order to our table and we didn't realize it and started eating. We took 2 scoops and 2 of the waitresses came back and abruptly grab the plate from our table, then told us it was a wrong order. This can be done more politely. The wrong dish had a lobster on it and we didn't realize the one we ordered was without the lobster. That is fine. I don't care. BUT.... Since you cannot serve THAT plate and the untouched lobster to another guest.... Why so abruptly grabbed the plate as they were trying to 'save it'? I don't care about the dish, just questioning the action. Not recommended. If you're looking for an americanized asian fusion food, sadly even PF Chang is still better than this place. read more

Excellent service and a nice place to meet friends. We all enjoyed our dishes but they didn't measure up to the "hype" nor their descriptions. For example, the Singapore noodles lacked spice which was part of the draw for that dish. Among 6 of us, we ate most of our meals as it was good, but didn't lick the plate because it wasn't great. I took my father there for a belated Father's Day celebration as well as a belated birthday celebration, and let this fine dining establishment know in advance. I inquired as to what could be done to make the experience memorable and special for him, and was told a candle and cake and song might be sung. I was terribly excited at the prospect of surprising him. All throughout dinner, I was bidding time, riding a feeling of anticipation for the surprise cake and candle, only to be colossally disappointed when our server brought out the only remaining piece of cake in the venue, which happened not to be my father's first choice. Additionally, there was no candle, no song, no mention of any Happy Birthday. I was hugely disappointed by this. My father enjoyed his steak, however, and I thought the presentation was excellent. The ambiance was lovely, and the restaurant did accommodate my vegan restrictions beautifully. However, the sodium content of the food was astronomically high, and it needn't be. The server compensated the cost of the cake since it was my father's second choice, for which I was grateful. My expectations, though, simply were not met. And my hopes dissipated. Alas. read more
