Ever since the Stage Deli at the Somerset food court closed, China Town has become my go-to every time I go to the mall! The Honey Chicken at China Town is absolutely to die for. The Lomein is also very good, as are the Veggie Spring Rolls. Most of the food options at the Somerset food court are kind of pricy and China Town is no exception, but the portion sizes at China Town are massive. No one else has the Spicy chicken that is served here at this mall. I've been eating here for almost 20 years and the quality/taste of the all white meat chicken cooked in tempura and then added to this sweet spicy sauce is perfect! Over the years I've gotten close to 15 people addicted to this food just by having it once. Besides Chick fil A, this is the busiest cafe at Somerset so there is always quick turn around on the food. The rice is average but the lo mein noodles are great. Get a double order of the spicy chicken and you won't be disappointed! People complain about the service but I've never had an issue. The ladies recognize me and although they're not super chatty with me, (that's because there's a huge line behind you) they've always been nice and I've never had a problem with them.... consistent as always for 20 years! read more

I've been here a few times over the years, and normally I'd give them 3/5 stars, but today wasn't that great. First off - prices are fair. It's about $6.39 for a 2-meat plate, and I got orange chicken and chicken with mushrooms. You can also ask for a cup of water rather than buying a drink, but it's a SMALL cup of water. They have white rice too if you don't want the fried rice. Today, though, the chicken with mushrooms were pooling in oil, and the orange chicken was crunchy and didn't taste great ... I now have a headache. I only ate about half my plate, and I don't think I will be coming here again. Somerset should get a Panda Express! I know China Town has been here forever, though. read more

Mall Chinese food doesn't really qualify as real Chinese food by any means. But it helps when you're hungry and spending all day walking around the mall. However, China Town is probably the worst mall Chinese food I've tried. I wouldn't recommend coming here at all! Somerset lacks any type of snack options. Their food court is always crowded but the options are far and few between. They'd do great with a pretzel place for a quick snack. But that's my personal option. Anyways, back to China Town. There is a language barrier among employees and customers that in turn means you may be getting something other than what you ordered. Be careful! I recently ordered a combination plate that came with an egg roll and rice (it costs about $6.50) and all I got was my meat choice and rice. The employee helping me almost didn't give me rice at all until I said something. As for the egg roll, the employee didn't seem to care that they forgot about it. Rude. My sister ordered the same combination plate as me and her price was much less than the advertised price. I was behind her in line, ordered the same thing, and the cashier tried charging me $8! Finally I said something. It seems like the employees make up the prices as they go and don't seem to care if they overcharge you. As for the quality of food, leave your exceptions pretty low. The chicken lacks flavor and is often times fatty and lukewarm. The rice is nothing special. PF Changs is on the other side of the mall so if you have the time and money, I'd recommend this as your Chinese option at Somerset. China Town is an acceptable substitute for mostly any other mall Chinese restaurant. Although not the best (see: Panda Express) it provides exactly what you'd want if mall Chinese is what your heart desires. The environment either works for or against this establishment depending what you are into. If being surrounded by old people and teenage girls at the same time gets your rocks off, then this place is for you. If not, consider taking it to go and eating alone in one of the darker corners of the mall. read more

This is a review for shopping mall food court Chinese food. You've gotta come into this fully aware that we're talking in terms of these kinds of places and not food-dom as a whole. With that said, this is one of my favorite places. It's cheap, and it's greasy, but you get a lot and it tastes pretty good. When your other choices are an overgrown salad bar, a too-long-sitting "traditional" food counter, a terrible deli, Zoup and Sbarro's, this is a welcome respite. It's going to help to eye the food, and see what's fresh and what isn't, but they get enough traffic to keep most dishes turned over pretty regularly. Don't go expecting conversation, the workers there barely speak English. And don't go expecting to use any kind of plastic, it's cash only. And a large drink? It is a very, very large drink. Save your coin and get a medium or a small, unless you REALLY want to fill up the tank. Overall, it's not a bad place to stop at. For cheap mall Chinese, it hits the spot. I thought I would write a review "update" from Christopher B.'s first review of this place almost three years ago. Unlike Christopher, I am giving this place my 5-star rating with the knowledge that I am NOT rating gourmet Chinese food. The food is pre-cooked, you point at what you want, they scoop two maybe three (if you're lucky, maybe four!) scoops of whatever it is you pointed to, they put it on a tray, you "slide it down" to the cashier, you pay for your food and PRESTO! you are ready to enjoy a plate of Chinese food in under two minutes! In my opinion, the best thing about this place is the CONSISTENT QUALITY of their food. I ALWAYS drop by China Town and get some Teriyaki Chicken and some "Hot" Chicken with their fried rice. Every single time I do, the flavor of the food is always as I remember it to be from the last time I ate here. My *minor* issue with this place is the food portion. The servers "guesstimate" how much food is in your plate so sometimes you get more, sometimes you get less. Is it really a big deal though? I mean I can get TWO dishes with my fried rice CHEAPER than the cost of a Market Fresh Combo at Arby's! You figure it out! So, China town ( food court Chinese ) was alright, got the general Tso with fried rice and egg roll , =s $6.14, Portion size - Basically a family picnic throw away plate with the 3 sections, main course and two side items, in my opinion another scoop of rice and a couple more chicken pieces would been more Portionly expected. Taste - for food court food is wasn't bad, I was surprised the General Tso actually had some spice, mild but noticed. o.k breading and the chicken size...well, I like em big, and these were not. Fried rice - had peas and carrots in it. a very off white color and kinda of bland. I had to put a little soy sauce to help it out with flavor. Egg Roll - Almost had that " Traditional " egg Roll taste ( and Look ) but with a hint of Spring roll in it. again... It was " o.k. Now the wife got the Sesame chicken and lo Mien, The lo mien was no where near what Lo mien should be, it was The New York style ( thick Noodle ) it to was bland and The Sesame chicken was more like Orange chicken, It had a orange, BBQ sauce, Asian flair flavor. I realize this is 'food court' Chinese, which is a far cry from 'authentic' 'corporate' or 'side of the road' Chinese. However, even for 'food court' Chinese, it was below average. The first thing you will notice is that it is the cheapest place around in the food court, and the food looks like you would expect. The next thing you will experience is that the workers are always annoyed, rush you to make a choice at the beginning of the counter (when you've barely been able to look at anything), and really aren't nice at all. No smiles, just annoyance with what I attribute to people (understandably) not knowing what they want, teen aged kids taking too many napkins and soy sauce packets, and possibly the life of working at Somerset in general. So big deal, the 2 minutes of service wasn't great. Well, that would be forgivable if the food was even decent, but it's not, at all. The chicken has chunks of fat, and the beef is very low quality, again- even for food court Chinese. I struggled to eat it. If you order rice or anything non-meat, you might be ok. I have eaten here several times with the same result, and frankly, I don't know what I was thinking. Have very low expectations and this will work out for you. Long story short: don't eat here. I've only eaten here twice, but that's really two times too many. The 1st time I came was just before closing, and I originally only wanted noodles. They wanted to get rid of the remaining food so she gave me noodles and the entire rest of the green bean chicken for about $7. I thought that was an awesome deal but when I tasted the food it was kinda gross but edible nonetheless. I ate here again today and just wanted 2 veggie rolls and noodles (because tbh this whole food court sucks, it's probably the worst mall food court in Michigan even though it's a high class mall and they charge up the wazoo...anyways, I digress). They definitely make up a price as they go and the receipt is useless because it doesn't tell you what you're paying for exactly. I paid $7 for not even half a plate of noodles and soggy veggie rolls, and unless you want diabetes don't eat the pink sauce they give you. The noodles had no sauce whatsoever, it was literally just boiled noodles so I added some soy sauce but it barely helped. They also mix old food from the day before with new food, which is what my noodles were. Last thing, I asked for a water and the girl started making a big cup with ice, but another worker shoved a little cup already filled at me. The water was hot and tasted like it had been sitting for a long time, and between overcharging, no flavor, old food and nasty water, I'm more than angry. Had the opportunity to go there yesterday. First the typical rude behavior of the Chinese server who believes talking to co-workers while ignoring the customer is normal. Very poor costumer service. One of the women took my order while she was on her cell phone. The chicken is too sweet. There really isn't a difference between the sesame chicken and the general tao chicken. Also I asked for a bigger cup of water and I insisted to pay extra, but she had to be rude, probably because I was interrupting her conversation on the phone.
