TLDR: Avoid eating here if the "magician" is working. Complaining to the manager is ineffective. Food is great. The food is consistently great and the bar and wait staff have been welcoming. However, the entire atmosphere is ruined by an entertainer that walks around the restaurant performing a magic trick. His approach is unpleasant and very off- putting. You are forced to say yes to avoid making things more awkward, especially if you had invited guests for dinner. He commands you to bring out your phone as if it's part of the trick, but only to command you to open your social media to live stream/record his performance, and then tag/follow him. We reported this to the manager, who was sincerely accepting of the complaint. It doesn't end there. The "magician" returns to the table a second time, but we declined. However, he became aggressive. He lowered his mask and and gestures as if he's ready for a physical altercation. He eventually left our table but he continued to stare me and my guests down repeatedly as he passed by our table. He did this through the night. His violent facial expression is unmistakable. The night was uncomfortable. Our waitress was apologetic, but couldn't do anything. The manager was aware and didn't do anything. Another table next to us was also troubled by this "magician." read more

My husband is from Michigan but he hasn't lived here in 20 years. We recently moved back and we were celebrating our new journey and we decided to have dinner here. We sat at the bar it was pretty busy we ended up having great service wonderful wine and fabulous food. I recently moved from the Chinatown area in Las Vegas and we have Amazing Asian cuisine there this topped it. I look forward to enjoying many more dinners here. read more

If you're looking for a great variety of sushi rolls, this is the place. It's been in business forever and it's always delicious and fresh. The drink menu is fun and they're always changing it up. I've been to other happy hours at MJL since the Wednesday fiasco a couple of years ago, and my visits have been enjoyable. They have unique happy hour treats that are better than hitting up your regular bar food establishment....it really is a nice change to get crabcakes, sushi, and bulgoki. The service hasn't been consistent...and no take home containers for happy hour treats... Blah.. But none the less we still enjoyed. There are less painted faces on other days besides Wednesday.. First and foremost I will start off by saying this is probably one of my new favorite Sushi spots. Absolutely fantastic quality of fish! Ordered Salmon on the beach, yellow tail nigiri, and some spicy tuna. No complaints. Not a huge fan of cream cheese in rolls but made a exception for the Salmon On The Beach, I would highly suggest that roll you're in the mood... they also have a nice selection of dinner items. Few people at the table had the roasted duck and crispy beef, both very tasty dishes. Not a huge place, but very clean and nice ambience . PLUS FREE VALET!! NOW the ONLY reason this place did not get 5 stars from me is because of the service from our waitress Nancy... Went to dinner last nite! Could not be any more pleased or surprised! Our Server June was attentive, and nice as she could be! Everything we ordered was amazing! The won ton soup was delish, the home made wontons melted in your mouth! The spareribs were tender and oh so good! The manager, Mike, came over and chatted ( sign of a great customer service) and suggested a whiskey my husband hadn't tried , brought him a taste! Make a reservation! I forgot/ didn't realize we needed a reservation and there were five of us but we were seated on the patio so it ended well. The food was soooo good but a little pricey. I had the scallops with noodles and they were delicious! The drinks are great too and I would recommend one of their specials as they are served beautifully. The owner came to our table at one point and I got the impression that he genuinely wanted to ensure that everyone was having a great time and the food was good. Have not been here for several years (due to Covid) but happened to go in for dinner with a friend a few weeks ago and I remember exactly why I loved this place. Wonderful food - we ordered about 6 things between the 2 of us to sample and try (you get a lot of food so we had plenty of leftovers). I couldn't have been happier. Service was great - very pleasant staff. The Manager stopped at our table and chatted. It was a bit on the pricey $$ side...but I would rather pay more for high-quality food than save a few bucks for a lesser quality. I will most definitely return. An interesting restaurant set up. We came in for dinner. One thing off the bat that was concerning was the amount of carpet. We got sat pretty quickly as we had a reservation. Our server was super friendly. We ordered drinks which all came out very well. Between the table we had a mixture of entrees and sushi. The sushi had an abnormal color and did not taste good. The entrees, such as the sweet & sour chicken and a noodle dish. Those were very tasty. We got calamari as well which was yummy. Overall 3/5. I've been a regular to Mon Jin Lau for almost a decade and have enjoyed their food almost weekly the entire time. Big portions, good variety including some amazing filet and a huge selection of sushi. Delicious! It's great to be recognized and visited by the owners too. They really care about each customer and it shows. Shanghai Wednesday's are an extra treat with both DJ and live music in the evenings and a nightclub style vibe one night a week. Well this used to to be a happening place pre covid. My first remark is that their web page is in accurate. They do not have a happy hour as stated. When I asked manager about this he seemed not to be aware of the error or how to update it. The other issue is friendliness of our wait staff. Its not like there was a full bar to service. Stick around and engage us in conversation. We used to love sitting at the crowded bar, watching the other patrons or chatting up the bar tenders. Nobody approached us to ask how we liked our food, how was the service. Both of which were very good! I suggest you go and enjoy the good food and make up your own mind. We had a great experience sitting outside at Mon Jin Lau, in January's 20 degree weather. They made it work on their patio with the heaters and we felt so comfortable, I actually forgot we were outside (the sakeitas and martinis could've helped)! The food was hot, came out in good timing, and was everything I was hoping for with taste! I love the scallion pancakes! The Kim Jong roll was delicious and a solid serving size compared to other sushi restaurants. I also got Mongolian beef and the spicy vegetable udon noodle to go and I will get it again. I've lived in Troy for 8 years and was always curious about Mon Jin Lau so my husband and I decided to come here for dinner on a Friday night. We didn't have a reservation and were asked if we wanted to sit at the bar instead of waiting for a table. We said we were but once they showed us our seats we realized that they didn't leave any empty seats between customers so we each would've been sitting right next to a stranger - not the best for social distancing. We waited for a table instead and then got sat right near the kitchen. We were surprised to see that everything was a la carte - I've never seen a place where an Asian dish doesn't come with rice at least. I got a Sprite, which came in a very small glass and constantly needed refilling - would be nice if they used bigger glasses for soda. For dinner I ordered the Almond Boneless Chicken and my husband had the Sweet & Sour chicken. Instead of a thick, dark, gravy, the sauce that came with my ABC was sort of runny and light. It didn't seem any higher quality than your average carryout Asian restaurant. I would say that the taste and portion size are not worth the price. read more

This was absolutely an amazing night it was Latin Night with Tokka the DJ he was phenomenal I haven't been here since 2012 and when I heard he was playing I had to come out! The food was good we came for dinner and stayed for the Wednesday night party because of Tokka. I hope they bring him back so we can come out again. The wife and I went here 3 days before Xmas. We were seated promptly. Within 2 mins they took our drink and food order. Once we had our food and drink the waitress checked on us to make sure all was well. The food was excellent and the wait staff were polite and patient and attentive to our needs. Just ok. I booked a date night for my birthday. On a Saturday I expected it to be slammed. The service was strained and the servers dedicate most of their time to larger parties. There was a moment there where we were wondering if we'd ever order. Does the restaurant have dessert? We wouldn't know because it wasn't offered/suggested. The food was fine but not worth the price. My dish wasn't at all as described. My husband didn't like his food. We ended up spending almost two hours there unintentionally. My husband and I used to make a point to come out here to eat and it has been impeccable but, not this time. I love the food here. The last time I was here I think I was either 28 or 29 years old and the owners' sons Bryan and Brandon had taken over. I went for a birthday celebration and it was Shanghai Wednesday which means the place is open till 2am and DJ bar with dancing. The night I was there they have valet parking which is complimentary! The interior is traditional in Asian Fashion with murals and tones of green and gold. It's a very pleasant atmosphere. I don't think the menu is traditional though! Which I love! They made it Asian Fusion and can find a wide variety of your favorite Asian treats! Crab Rangoons to Sushi! All your favs are on this menu! Mix it up! They have Miso Soup and Egg Drop Soup. And speaking of owners, I watched the dining room which is definitely a generation mix and saw the owners come to each table making sure their patrons were happy. Mon Jin Lau provides the sushi that I get regularly at Plum Market. It's always fresh (even at the end of the day) and I love that they make most of the rolls in both white or brown rice options AND brown rice quinoa. Good for your whole grains and daily fiber In particular I'm a big fan of the spicy tuna, the salmon on the beach, and the salmon sashimi. The latter seriously melts in your mouth. SO good! A little on the pricey side but I try and get the daily special to save a few bucks. Haven't been to the actual location yet but I'm interested to try the rest of their options. Father's Day at Mon Jin Lau. What a wonderful dining experience, as the entire family begin to ease back into eating out (and inside) our favorite dining establishments. This felt nice. Reservations/masks/outside dining and well spaced inside dining. The set the tone, but the real star was the fantastic food. Crispy duck and Egg Foo Young were my highlights, but the only minor disconnect was no rice was served with the meals, and we had to order (and wait) for white rice.
