This is my first review for Mon Jin Lau. I have lost count of how many times I've been here over the years. They never disappoint. My wife and I ordered a ton of food. I took the rest for our kids. Appetizer Szechuan calamari and we both had soup. She had the wonton and I had the hot and sour. Eggs rolls a must here. We shared vegetable fried rice, General's chicken as well as Singapore noodles w/beef. Lastly, we had the Sizzlin fillet. 5 stars for all. We had two bags full of carry outs. Let me preface by saying this 5-star rating is taking into consideration that we are talking about a sushi spot in Troy, Michigan. It's not a $200/pp omakase at a 10-person seating chefs table in Manhattan 5-star, but for sushi in the suburbs of Detroit I was very impressed! I was staying next door at the courtyard on a business trip, and have always had trouble finding a light healthy dinner when I'm up in the Warren/Troy area for work. Was excited I could walk here, and definitely find a healthy option. Right when I walked in I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful interior, and how busy they were for a Tuesday night. The bartender wasn't super nice or really helpful, but they were busy and she seemed like she works 7 days a week or something so whatever. I ended up getting the Chin Dynasty which was several pieces of sushi and a spicy tuna roll. The portions were much bigger than what you get in NYC, and everything was super fresh. They had a good sake list and a cheap tiger beer to complete everything I need for a sushi for one dinner. If this place was in Brooklyn I think it would do well even with all the competition. First time trying out Mon Jin Lau and an overall great experience. When we told the hostess it was our first visit she welcomed us warmly and we were seated immediately (5:30pm on a Saturday and already quite busy). Our waitress was very attentive, and I appreciate that a gentleman came around w water several times during our meal. Crab Rangoon was good, and I really appreciated the 4 sauces that were brought to our table. My seaweed salad was bland and a little fishy--most likely from the crab? on top--the only thing that prevented a 5 review. My sesame chicken was FANTASTIC. I'm used to overly sweet sauces, but there's was a perfectly blended sauce w hints of sesame oil. The chicken was fried perfectly in panko breading and sesame seeds to (reminded me of katsu); crispy and so tasty w bites of rice and the veggies underneath (peapod, broccoli, squash). I loved it! My husband wound up eating half of mine too. It was both of our favorite parts of the meal! My husband had the Mongolian beef, and while the meat was cooked perfectly, he was not a fan of how sweet the sauce was and also how soupy the dish was overall. Stopped in for early dinner. I ordered a Dragon Roll and Almond boneless chicken with white rice. The portions are huge. Forgot to get a pic..Everything had good flavor. The sushi was fresh. Our server Nikki was very attentive, she did a great job. The pricing was fair. The decor is a little dated. Hasn't changed much since my last visit, I see an update or overhaul in the future. I remember this being a bustling place years ago. Seems like it's lost its luster a bit. The food is still delicious. First of all, this restaurant has been the best Chinese restaurant for decades. Something has changed the past few years with the quality of the food, so much so that we haven't been in several years as it was so bad. A friend's birthday and her desire to go there brought us back last night. Upon entering I had forgotten how nice the atmosphere is. It's a little dated but the vibe is cool. What wasn't cool was that the air conditioning wasn't on and it was stiflingly hot and uncomfortable. I know it's springtime and the weather is changing but cmon. Our server was friendly and did a great job, but she was covering so many tables I felt sorry for her. But what really matters is the food and it was worse than I even remember it. The egg rolls were bland and soggy, the soup was lukewarm and tasteless. We all shared a pepper calamari and some type of pancake which were not very good. I had the crispy beef which came out later than everyone else's entrees and it was chewy and fatty and DIDN'T come with rice. Our friend had the Thai sea scallops which he described as bland and not good. My wife had a noodle dish which she thought was OK. When it came time to leave I had to hunt down our waitress to pay the bill, not her fault as she was covering so many tables and was swamped. We really liked her but they gotta hire more staff. The food was terrible and if we ever have to go back we ain't gonna order anything. As an alternative, try Trizest not far away. Seriously, some tables are so close it might as well be communal seating. Our waitress came over promptly, and I ordered a tasty Shanghai cosmo. We had crab Rangoon and the King Kong and Salmon on the Beach rolls to start our meal. For my entrée, I had the seafood war bar. The flavors of this dish were great and it could have been perfect, but the rice was not thoroughly cooked. It was crunchy and in clumps throughout. From the host stand to the table the place was packed with people standing around blocking walkways, which was very off putting off the bat. We began our meal with the "pupu platter" and the name was very accurate for the taste, the appetizer was very oily and not fresh almost as if you microwaved everything on the "pupu platter". Overall: I have found the food here to be consistently outstanding; the service has declined a bit since the '80s, but that's sort of the way life is going, and 'a bit' is acceptable. The food quality has dropped. They handed us dirty paper menu, really? Disgusting. Mon Jin Lau has now even stopped rice with their main entry dishes. Good flavors but basically hoisin with a few oils thrown in. I asked for spicy, but there wasn't a hint of heat. They provide chili oil which made up for it. Give people the option for authentic flavors, you'll earn fans for life. A big portion, enough for two, or add an appetizer if you are really hungry. Rice is extra, which is always a headscratcher for me. Build in the price since most people will want it. I never made a review before, but let this be the first... It's my first time coming to this restaurant (for a carryout order). But let me just say, I did not feel welcomed whatsoever. The hostesses look like they hate their job and in such a rush. Mind you I work at a busy restaurant myself. The hostesses main job is to be the welcoming face. It's the first face you see representing the restaurant... but for them to not be welcoming was my first red flag. It's disappointing and doesn't make me feel like Im welcomed to eat there or want to eat there. Also I get it, It gets hectic and hard being in customer service and you're overwhelmed with the busyness of the restaurant. But me personally, I still pushed through with a smile on my face no matter how bad customers are treating me or how miserable I am that day, i still go out of my way for customers to make sure they are pleased. But I am not pleased.. mind you, there isn't plasticwear in the carryout, and I asked for extra salty edamame... guess what. not a pebble of salt.... I can't believe I even left a decent tip. Absolutely LOVE this restaurant. They were slam packed but still managed to provide us with quick and attentive service. They have an extensive menu with all types of Asian cuisine, but we only ordered sushi and it was fresh and delicious. If you're looking for a classy Asian cuisine experience. This is the place. Fantastic sushi plates and grade A traditional Chinese food. Prices are a bit high so expect to have a high bill. Fantastic spot for a romantic date and the outdoor patio is great, especially on their Shanghai Wednesday's event they have. The Singapore noodles are fantastic and the sesame chicken is perfect. This is a great date night place. Awesome decor and atmosphere. I love the juxtaposition of the dark, traditional dining area and the bright garden room with large French-style windows. Both rooms are connected by a sleek, modern cocktail bar that looks utterly enticing. I am no expert of Asian cuisine, but from my experiences here so far, the fare matches the ambience perfectly. The wife of the person with the missing meal didn't want him to eat alone so she waited till his food arrived which unfortunately meant her meal was cold. The manager was aware of the delay with the last meal yet only came to the table with a quick insincere apology. The server never apologized.
