I never made a review before, but let this be the first... It's my first time coming to this restaurant (for a carryout order). But let me just say, I did not feel welcomed whatsoever. I'm coming in for my first time and there's not a single smile in any of the staffs faces. The other customers around me didn't look too happy either. The hostesses look like they hate their job and in such a rush. Mind you I work at a busy restaurant myself. The hostesses main job is to be the welcoming face. It's the first face you see representing the restaurant... but for them to not be welcoming was my first red flag. It's disappointing and doesn't make me feel like Im welcomed to eat there or want to eat there. Also I get it, It gets hectic and hard being in customer service and you're overwhelmed with the busyness of the restaurant. But me personally, I still pushed through with a smile on my face no matter how bad customers are treating me or how miserable I am that day, i still go out of my way for customers to make sure they are pleased. But I am not pleased.. mind you, there isn't plasticwear in the carryout, and I asked for extra salty edamame... guess what. not a pebble of salt.... I can't believe I even left a decent tip. I'm very upset with how my first experience was at mon Jin lau, without having an actual experience of sitting down and eating there. Love the restaurant but only go when Mike the manager is off. He's rude, more concerned with the TV than his customers. I like the music and atmosphere to relax but he has to put the TV on rather than concerning himself with customer satisfaction. I love not having to yell over a TV like in most bars. I have upgraded my previous star rating to a 5 star. The food was much better than I remembered from previous years. Service was excellent. We sat at the bar and had drinks while we waited for our table. Both servers were attentive and we chatted a bit with the bar tender. I don't know if I have ever felt more insulted by "food". The waitress did her job. She sold the sea bass. One of the most expensive items on the menu. It was fishy and rubbery. Then it was a while before our server came back to the table. Because she got seated a 6 top and a 2 2 top back to back. She finally came to take our 5 orders. This is where the kitchen problem came up . Two orders came out hot. Then two more orders came out a few minutes later one a noodle dish was warm at best. Without exaggeration , The last meal took over 5 minutes to be delivered and it was only chicken fried rice. The wife of the person with the missing meal didn't want him to eat alone so she waited till his food arrived which unfortunately meant her meal was cold. The manager was aware of the delay with the last meal yet only came to the table with a quick insincere apology. The server never apologized. I am not sure what has changed because the service and food were always impeccable over the many years we have dined here. Food was wonderful Osaka roll and amber roll but the waitress Nikki was very rude :( she went to every table but ours when we were sat, the table next to us sat down 20 minutes after us and were served food and drinks before our orders were even placed. she made snide comments to our table when questions were asked. One party member asked about her chicken when the rest of the food came out and she said "well you want it cooked right?" And she asked for another party member to grab the plate because her shoulder was hurting which is so understandable no problem at all, but then the next plate came she went to grab it becuase Nikki had stated her shoulder was hurt and she tightened her grip and took it back. At the end of the meal she tossed the checkbook and fortune cookies onto the table. One party member went to negotiate the 33 dollar tip because we as a group felt that it was unnecessary for the service received. They were unable to change the tip, we were willing to pay it because it was policy. Nikki proceeded to approach the table and stated "I heard I was rude to you guys" we began to explain we felt that the service was very unprofessional and we weren't interested in going back and forth. Nikki proceeded to say " well you guys had $100 dollars taken off of your bill I dont know what more you want from me I've worked here for 35 years!" The bill was not the issue whether we won the Instagram contest or not, the issue is having a server give you such a terrible experience. Some coworker friends and I came here today for Troy Restaurant Week. It's one of the only TRW restaurants that I hadn't tried yet, and it had been on my list for a while. $18 gets you a 3-course meal, including soup/salad, appetizer/sushi, and an entree, which was a decent deal. I would give the food about a 4/5 overall. I started off with a salad with ginger dressing, which was delicious. I had the California roll as my second course, and it was just okay; I've had better sushi elsewhere. For my entree, I had the Kalbi (Galbi, I think) which was also very good and a huge portion of meat, vegetables, and fried rice. Pacing was not very good but it kind of worked out because 2 of us had to get back for a work meeting - we received our soup/salads and then literally five minutes later received the second course (some of us got egg rolls and Crab Rangoon, and I had the sushi). Meals were brought out before we were done with those courses too. However, water glasses were refilled promptly, which was definitely a plus, especially since the glasses themselves were small. I read recently that Mon Jin Lau is Troy's oldest restaurant, and has been around for about 40+ years. I would come back for lunch, although the menu was a bit pricey - most of the lunch specials looked to be about $12.99-$13.99. Service was incredibly slow and we had to flag our server down for every step of our ordering process from having our glasses filled with water to trying to place an order because no one came to our table 20 mins of us being there. It took 40 mins for our food to arrive and all the dishes were complete misses. Food lacked flavor and my dish was overly salted. Everything tasted like it was inspired by Asian food but none if it came close to the original dishes they were inspired by. Saturday night might not have been the best time to bring a large group to premium Asian, so imagine our surprise when they accommodated us immediately and seem genuinely happy to see us. I would've been pissed. Eventually, we were joined by even more late-comers that informed us the average wait around town was over an hour. Somebody up there likes me. I almost filled up on appetizers. Steamed Mussels in Thai curry sauce, Bali Maki (grilled marinated beef on skewers that they serve on a flaming hibachi) and their famous pan fried dumplings. This is the home of the popular MJL Special. This $9 per person concoction is an attack on your sobriety using three different rums and four juices. I've heard it called the volcano, the Grand Canyon and the widowmaker. Get the drink for two and they'll light it on fire for you. I remember 40 years ago this was served in a huge shell. Much bigger than today. None the less, a fun drink for two, or three, even four. The menu is vast and as I remember, all well prepared. In addition to the Chinese ravioli (dumplings sautéed in Chinese pesto) we enjoyed Thai Lemongrass Chicken with pea pods, asparagus and mushrooms. The very best from this evening included: Nu Kung Pao Chicken, Hunan Spicy Chicken and Moo Shu Beef served with tiger lilies, wood ears, scallions, cabbage, mandarin pancakes in a hoisen sauce. When you go there, make sure someone in your party orders Marco-Polo Lo Mein. Holy cow. More pan fried noodles entwined with chicken, lobster, snow peas, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, shrooms and water chestnuts. A meal all by itself.
