This Chinese restaurant is a gem. The staff remembers my name even if it's been months since my last visit. The bar staff and the regulars who congregate there are the friendliest in town. The vintage Polynesian decor reminds me of trips out with my family for chinese food. My 12 year old daughter gets a kick out of the same. The baby back spare ribs are fantastic as is the house special fried rice. There's nothing else quite like those two items in the area. Monkou isn't the only aisian restaurant I dine at, but it is easily my favorite. read more

I haven't been to this place in about 5 years and after returning today I will NEVER be back . My waiter had green blobs of booker hanging out of his nose , he smelled horribly of body odor and after delivering our rice 15 mins after all the other food it was stone cold . To top it off the little girl in the booth next to us started throwing up all over the booth . I've been coming here for awhile now. I am a server myself and I had a terrible experience last night. I enter the restaurant and I don't get a greeting from the owner I get a "do you guys have ID's" as if we have done something wrong. I proceed to say I'm not sure who's getting drinks but we just want a table (because there was 5 of us ). The owner then says you can't sit at those tables you have to sit at a booth if you don't have ID's . Which makes no sense because we weren't sitting at a bar. She sat us in a corner like we were children and left. I have never been treated so poorly and I vented to our waitress and she proceeded to tell me that the owner is that way and they don't care if we come back. So guess what I am not coming back. The food is terrible anyway. Keep this up and you will loose more customers. Very disappointed. read more

First time visiting thought I would give it a try. Walking to my seat I notice the place was filthy. Plates and food around the registers and computers like they have been sitting there for hours. Trash and food all over the floors. Ask the waitress to give me another plate since it was dirty with caked on food. Food was lousy. Place is outdated plywood walls. What happened? We've been going to Mon Kou for about a year for great tasting food --- until last night. The people have all changed. The food was different and the quality dropped. My favorite has always been the boneless spare ribs but not last night. They were fatty and could not even be chewed? Worse than that, nobody cared? Did the family sell? Change food distributors? We've noticed slight changes in the last two months but last night was more dramatic. Something's happened and we fear our favorite local Chinese place has changed hands? oh horrible just got take out use to go there when I lived closer was a ways from home in burriville so decided to bring home takeout, They have completely gone down hill maybe if you had enough drinks it may be ok. Eggrolls ugh they must not have changed their grease in years aweful taste. Terriakee trying to eat shoe leather :( no dry noodle with the chow mein and the meat was huge disgusting slices not even diced or cut nice and low quality. I thought you use to get a small white rice so you could put your kung poa over? Tastes aweful and very very greasy you could ring is out like a rag. Not the greatest. The atmosphere is nice but the food....well...not so nice. $25 for their pu-pu platter is overpriced. It's what you get anywhere else for $18 to $20. Mostly likely not going back. I ate here a few years ago and remember the crab rangoons being amazing. Went last night for dinner, and was mostly disappointed. They have various combo plates, dinner and appetizer, but they were all unusual combinations, like I wanted this but not that in almost every combo. There was also a charge for substitutions. I ended up getting the D12-chicken fingers, crab rangoons and pork chow mien. Being the only combo that didn't come with rice, I asked to substitute the pork chow mien for rice costing an extra $2. Really?! It's rice. The chicken fingers were the best and the crab rangoons were better than I remembered. The rice was what I call "dirty" (dark brown, tasteless and not very fresh). We also ordered a scallion pancake which was light and not at all greasy. Unfortunately, today I have had the worst stomach pains all day, I believe from the crab rangoons since my boyfriend is fine and he tried my food, except the rangoons since he is allergic. I had had a bland lunch and I also rarely get sick from eating anything. The service was less than par. Our waiter took forever to get to our table, it was not that busy, and forever to come back and take our order. Also as we finished eating, I watched him sit down and eat his dinner a few tables down with some other staff. So we had to wait until he felt like stopping eating to come and see if we were done. We got the check and he went right back to his table to eat so we had to wait again to get the credit card charged. I don't write reviews often and I'm sure other people may have had better experiences but this experience was very disappointing and painful. I tried this place for the first time today. The bar is very dark and the bartender didn't seem very friendly. It does appear clean and thoughtfully decorated so the atmosphere is actually about a 3 or 4. However, the food is mediocre at best. The lomein was dry, the boneless spareribs were fatty and the chicken fingers soggy. However, the fried rice was delicious. The drinks were also very good. read more

Lunch here made us sad and long for the old days of Mon Kou. My cousin and I went there for lunch after not going there for many years. We had fond memories and were ready to start frequenting this place again. It is so dark in there it is hard to read the menu. My cousin is a Vietnam veteran and not a real picky eater but when he took the first bite of his egg roll I saw such disappointment in his face. I asked how it was he said different and not good and did not finish them. He picked at the rest of his food and I asked if we would be eating here again and sadly he said no. My lunch with the Kung Pao Sauce was flavorless and watery but no off flavors just really bland. I ate some and brought most of it home so I can season it and eat it later. Now I know why at noon there were only 2 tables with customers. This is a beautiful big place with so much history and potential but even the local take out Chinese places that charge much less have better more flavorful food. The building and interior decoration can only go so far but a restaurant lives or dies by the food and the skilled seasoning and preparation in the kitchen. Overall a decent experience. I haven't been here in many years. We stopped for a few drinks and food with friends. They have done a nice job updating the outside of the building and inside is pleasant and inviting. We sat in the tiki bar area at a table. The waiter Richard was extremely hospitable and friendly. There were four of us and plenty of room at one table but the place was not that full so Richard moved over another table so we could spread out which was very nice. The teriyaki beef was very good and very tender, teriyaki chicken was very good and who doesn't enjoy sticky wings. Overall no complaints with the food. My only complaint would be that Richard apparently was also taking care of table in the dining area also which took him out of sight for the most part so it was hard to get his attention for more drinks or something else. Other than that Richard was a bubbly, friendly, accommodating and enjoyable waiter. read more

Goodness! What an experience this place was! As soon as I drove by, I knew I had to see what was inside! The giant neon palm tree got me excited, and I immediately made a U-turn to go have a look. I wasn't even hungry, but something about Mon Kou made me do it. I stepped inside and was overloaded with the Chinese culture. A water fountain filled with pennies...how creative! I immediately dove in, grasping for handfuls of wet coins. The manager charged at me, screaming for me to get out. I didn't want to offend him, so I went to the bathroom and stood under the hand dryer for about two hours until I was dry. Then I asked for a table. I was seated instantly and ordered a Pepsi and a glass of onions. I ate the onions in one bite, left a $40 bill on the table, and went back to my car. I have never had as much fun as I did that night. read more

The Mon Kou is one of my favorite restaurants. They have the best food for their style in the area. The staff has always been nice. My family and I have been coming here for probably 15 years. I suggest the chicken fingers with pork fried rice, along with crab rangoon and vegetable lo-mein. read more

We have been coming to Mon Kou for 25 years! The owners always remember our family and give us top notch service. We love the food. Some of our favorites include the Curry Beef and General Gau's Chicken. The Pu Pu Platter is a lot of fun, and you should try the Scorpion Bowl. This is a classic Chinese Polynesian restaurant. We went again recently for my son's birthday and we will no doubt return soon. read more

I went to mon kou for the first time with my family and the food was great . Portions where huge so you definitely get your money's worth. I ended up getting pork lo mein and the waiter asked if I wanted a small or large . I opted for large so I could share and have left overs the following day and dear god all mighty I had 4 meals out it. Everyone raved about the scorpion bowls. I agree they were to die for !! I tried some of my finances orange chicken too which I absolutely loved he agreed and said he wants to try the sesame chicken next time ! Highly recommend mon kou! I have been going to Mon kou restaurant since it has opened in the 70,s. It was always a class place with very good food. But I have to say that the last 3 times that I went there I always order the steak howieien which comes on a red hot metal plate which makes the whole thing sizzeled and smoke. Well things have changed. Last night, 6-6-2014 I had the same steak now mind you the last two where not chooked as I had ask and there was a tremendous amount of grit in each steak which tells me that they no longer use a top steak. Each time I left a third of the steak on the plate of grit. When I went last night I said ok maybe this one will be better, wrong. It sucked the metal plate was not hot and even though I asked for a medium rare steak it was cooked all the way through. I know people are going to say why did not return it well I did not want to wait any longer for another steak. The rice was garbage and the oyster source with veg and shrimp was very bland. I have to say after going to this restaurant for many years I will never go back again and if anyone asks me I will never recommended it to anyone again. Mon Kou has become very old and has lost its goal they are just going through the act of making good food. I have eaten there for many years but as I said I will never go there again. read more

Went to this restaurant for the first time ever on easter because no where else was open and purchased 70$ worth of overpriced food. First I didn't even get all of my food when I got home 30 minutes away and they tried to tell me they put everything in the bag, which they didn't. Second I was tossed around by about seven different people on the phone to get to a manager who wouldn't give me credit for the food but instead argued with me and hung up on me when I was persistent about getting my money back. Third they wanted to give me another piece of food if I came all the way back and showed them the bag with all the food in it, which by that time had been cold, soggy and wouldn't be edible. So I'm never going to come here again for takeout and I suggest others do not as well especially if your ordering out because this place sucks and I will go to the emerald square mall food court before I ever go here again... read more

We have visited this restaurant many times in the past 18 months or so, and have yet to experience what others appreciate and apparently enjoy about it. Our next door neighbor and her daughter go often and say they love it. Our many visits have sadly involved trying different dishes and menu items and they are all bland and not very tasty. We have gone on weekdays for lunch, weeknights and Friday and Saturday nights. No difference! While we are almost always greeted and seated at once, the wait person seems to take a long time materializing at all or vanishing after the meal had been served. On more than one visit, if we wished to have our beverage refreshed or needed more napkins there had always been an accommodation by OTHER servers when "our" person has been nowhere to be seen for nearly the entire meal. A few weeks ago on a Friday night and when our son was working, we decided to give it another try. There is a saying to the effect that one keeps doing the same thing on repeatedly but hoping for a different outcome. Or something like that! While we almost always prefer to support locally owned businesses rather than box-chain generic restaurants especially, it's good bye and so long to Mon Kou for us. read more
