I was coming to town and needed an updo last minute (the place I was supposed to go was too far from where I was staying) and it was a holiday weekend. The hotel we were at recommended Monica's and they were booked. Monica really went way above and beyond and found someone to come in for me on a Saturday with only 2 days notice (did I mention it was a holiday weekend?!). Torn - service was fabulous, pricing was really high. Cute place down the cobblestone alley, you can drive all the way up to the curb but only one way. Look for the sign and climb the short flight of stairs up. Came for a simple updo- some curls, nothing insane. Did I get great curls? Yes. Were they very nice about wrapping our hair up to run down the street in the rain to catch an uber? Yes. Should it have cost $65 plus tip when the price we were quoted for updos was $35 starting? Monica styled my hair and kept me informed with the process. She dried it then showed me other ways that I could wear it. I loved the shampoo lady. I didn't get her name but she put some elbow into massaging my scalp. Loved it!!! Monica has been in business for 30 years. 13 in this shop and 17 around the corner. Everyone was friendly from the time I opened the door until I left. They have a male stylist also if you prefer. Monica's has a spa downstairs with all the pampering. She did such a beautiful job with my highlights, exactly what I asked for, and the background color is perfect. I am an African American female and not everyone can trim/cut our hair. I made an appointment with Kevin and was in and out in 15 minutes. He trimmed it dry of course. (I guess some people trim theirs wet) He did exactly what I asked and only trimmed maybe a half inch? Very nice man, very nice shop. Quaint and the staff was very friendly. I did not have time for a wash or blow dry, I could only get the trim but I'm glad I had Kevin trim my hair. Great experience. I will certainly go back. read more

I had my hair colored and cut/styled at Monica's today- I literally couldn't be any happier. Sabrina listened to what I wanted and gave me 200% more than I ever expected. The color (a gorgeous red that she specifically blended for me) is brilliant and fits me to a tee! She was also super knowledgeable about my very curly hair and gave me an amazing style! I really wanted to like this place. Everyone there was very nice to me, except for my stylist. I don't know if he was just having a bad day or didn't like me, but he didn't talk to me or even smile until about 10 minutes into the haircut, when we made some small talk. I told him I wanted my split ends cut off, and some shape back into my cut. I ended up with my hair absurdly shorter than it has been in 10 years, and none of the layers or shape I asked for. I absolutely hated it, but didn't have the heart to say anything, so I just bolted. read more

I went to Monica's to celebrate my birthday by getting a massage, mani and pedi. The massage, mani and pedi was excellent. All I can say is that everything from the receptionist to the actual service area was great...I am glad I decided to visit this day spa. The ladies were so friendly. Prices are nothing special, and mire importantly: they don't do what you ask! Their updo skills are not up to par or up to date. I have been a client at this salon for a very long time. I am an extremely vain and particular woman and this salon has always delivered! I feel so comfortable when I walk in. Monica's has a homey, but yet professional atmosphere. It is not at all like the snooty salons where you feel like you have to be looking your best just to walk in the door. As you enter, you are greeted by the very friendly receptionist (and offered beverages from coffee to wine and a light snack), then you get whisked away to the charming and caring woman who washes hair. I finally sit at my hairdresser, Michele's station. She always listens patiently to hear my various ideas for cut and color. We then work as a team to decide on what works with my face, hair type, etc.... I have even just sat in her chair and told her to do whatever she wants. I am never disappointed. I came here to get a simple blow-out. The guy was not friendly from the start. He was rough with the round brush and scorched my scalp. The brush even hit me on my face. On top of that, my hair was not blown out correctly. When I asked him to fix it, his reply was that my hair is naturally frizzy and that's why it is the way it is. Ummm hello, Isn't that why people get blow outs?? Anyways I ask him for the brush so I could show him and he just walks off. I proceed to blow dry and fix my hair myself. I literally redid my entire blowout. And then when I told the owner about that she didn't do anything about it. She made it seem like I was too picky. Is it picky to want smooth hair after a blow out?! Ive gotten so many blow outs and have NEVER experienced something like this. Then when it came time to pay she said my blow out was going to cost $50. $50 for a blow out that I did myself?!? And then she reduced to $45. I will never go to this place again. On the phone they said the blow out would range from $40-$50. When she knew I wasn't happy about it, why wouldn't she charge me less? It makes no sense. DO NOT GO HERE!! read more

Don't judge a book by it's cover! My daughter and I needed our hair blown out for a wedding and our hotel recommended Monica's because she's been in the neighborhood for 25 years +. When you walk in it kinda looks like a barber shop but Monica and her staff are fabulous and talented. Kevin gave me one of the best blow outs I've ever had....I loved it. Monica made my daughter look more beautiful then ever and she also got a great manicure downstairs by a super friendly woman. The lower level is a full service Spa which is hidden because she's located in an old building on an old cobblestone street. My rave review isn't complete without mentioning how well equipped Monica is for every situation. Its was raining when we were ready to leave the salon, so she pulled out these thick plastic head covers (old fashioned but attractive) so we could walk back to Hotel Monaco without ruining the blow outs. I can't say enough good things about this salon, from the front desk to the stylists. Kevin cut my hair into the exact style I asked for and offered some good tips for upkeep. I will definitely be a regular customer. Oh, and did I mention that I called them up at 11:45 asking if they had any slots open, and they worked me right in 10 minutes later? I think Kevin actually took my appointment instead of eating lunch. All of the staff was so nice and welcoming. I was also shocked at the prices, which were more like Louisiana prices rather than Baltimore (I'm originally from La). $45 for shampoo/condition, full cut, and blowout. read more

I went here to get my hair done for a wedding. I have to say this place is very good. My up-do came out excellent. They put lots of curls in my hair. She put lots of hairspray so my hair can stay. The makeup lady also did a fantastic job with my sister makeup. It looked very natural. The people who work here are nice and friendly. read more

My daughter and I went to Monica's to get our hair styled for a wedding that day in Baltimore. The girl who washed my hair was so nice, as was the receptionist, but the two stylists who did our hair were so unprofessional. They were bickering among themselves, and my stylist did a horrendous job on my hair, and tried to fix it, and the final look I would rate a C+. My daughter had hair extensions and the woman didn't even know how to work with them, and curled her hair, it took 70 minutes, and my daughter absolutely HATED it. We both paid $50 and $75, consecutively, and my daughter promptly washed her hair out as soon as we left and was almost late for the wedding. These stylists need to RETIRE - don't go there if you're expecting anything contemporary!!!! read more
