My dog, Bagel, is the crux of my vegan journey. =)

Review for James Spooner To commemorate my vegan journey and after years of putting off a tattoo, I finally knew what I wanted and brought my design to James. I wanted a simple little wrist tattoo and with his expertise, he humbly advised me to rotate it away from me, as no one regrets it that way, but nearly everyone regrets getting it facing them. After a few minutes of letting that sink in, I decided that this man probably knew what he was saying so I went with his advice. Although the piece is very simple, it was executed very nicely with sizing and placement and he listened to all of my concerns and opinion on how it should look to suit my original piece; needless to say, I absolutely loved it. Basing it on my overall experience and his mannerism and wisdom, I'm completely satisfied =) P.s, I don't regret the placement if you're reading this

BEST. TATTOO. EVER. Don't look for anymore, you just find the perfect shop ! Cosy place, awesome artists. JORELL ELIE did such a great job. I came in first to discuss about my idea, i wanted a tiger face with a large dreamcatcher on my ribs & leg. Jorell is so pro, he totally get it and did somethg even better than expected. Don't go to cheap tattoo that you ll regret later, go for a real artist !

Egyptian Maat! First tattoo! Love it! James spooner.

Just finished my first tattoo! Had an amazing experience and great conversation. I had a very specific, meaningful idea; I wanted the Egyptian goddess Maat and James transformed my small idea into an amazing (bigger) tattoo! I love it! He also has a great sketch of the Sphinx with laser beam eyes...if anyone is interested ;)

James spooner's design for the beginning of this piece. Will have watercolor added by Jorell on a later date.

So grateful that my friend recommended this place. It's a small clean shop. For my piece, James Spooner designed the illustration part of a dream catcher. And Jorell will be adding the water color to the piece. I had a general idea of what I wanted: a dream catcher in line/dot work style with watercolor and somehow incorporate a purple sun. I told them I trusted their judgment on how to make this work and so far I love the beginning of this piece. Can't wait to for the next session that will add the watercolor! James is easy to work with and let me have short breaks when I needed them. He was fun to talk to during the tattooing session.

Jorell is my number 1 go-to artist. His work is absolutely incredible and I always recommend him to my friends. The shop, Monocle Tattoo, is really great. It has this feel of an old school shop. It's really intimate and personal, there's no other people walking around and looking at t-shirts or other stuff that bigger shops have. There aren't all these rules about guests and "coming to the back", it's just a down-to-earth, real tattoo shop, and I LOVE it. The artists are incredible and so welcoming, I felt very comfortable there. All in all a wonderful shop with wonderful artists.

James is an incredible tattoo artist! I've received two tattoos from him and will likely go back for another. Very precise detailing and extremely clean, love the products he uses and also makes you feel comfortable as soon as you enter the door. Highly recommend checking him out, worth every penny.

James Spooner is a fantastic artist. Not all tattoo artists are "artists", but James has depth of vision and creative expression that go beyond just being trained with a needle. Monocle Tattoo keeps to high standards of cleanliness and integrity, with a positive vibe that makes the whole experience comfortable and inviting. Offering vegan services just adds to the list of positives here in knowing they run a compassionate and conscious business. I only recommend tattoo artists I have personally worked with and wear their art on my body. I'm grateful for the pieces James has created for me, and as a tattoo designer and vegan, I refer clients to him all the time and will continue to. Even if you aren't vegan, you will appreciate the quality, care, and peace of mind provided at Monocle.

Watercolor addition that Jorell did (as well as his Instagram)- it's great how collaborative J is. Great work, great experience.

Jorell is truly a gem, he's really great at understanding your needs and incorporating them into the work, and it's also a very collaborative process. He doesn't make a stencil for you to pre approve (which I'll admit, made me nervous beforehand), instead he sketched the design on me day of. But the thing is, he sketched it so quickly (and beautifully) that I felt less guilty making alterations to it than I would have if I was looking at a printed transfer paper that may have taken hours to make. So ended up liking the process way more, not I mention it's kind of amazing in itself to watch him sketch something onto you so perfectly and fast. Jorell and James are both committed to a great experience, from the groovy feel of their loft shop, to the great group of neighbors popping in and out to say hi, it's just a great place all around. I highly recommend you visit. ( PS The tatoo cited above is a goldfish in water around some script I already had, and should be in the yelp photos somewhere. )

Loved our experience getting tattoos with James! He was so helpful and thoughtful throughout the whole process and did a fantastic job. Cute studio with great vibes too, rare for a tattoo joint

What an incredible experience. I received my first tattoo from James and I love it. The atmosphere in the shop is awesome. Very friendly. I will keep coming back for all my art work. Prices are insanely reasonable. The workmanship and artistic level is perfect.

I've been going to James for about 3 years now and I can't imagine going to anyone else! His creativity is wonderful and he always goes above and beyond. The shop itself is outstanding! Extremely clean and full of friendly faces. I'm very fortunate to have stumbled across this vegan friendly artist! Here a picture of my most recent dot work portrait done by James Spooner

Ask the Community - Monocle Tattoo

I'm Finally looking to get my first tattoo. However I am prone to keloids. Is this a deal breaker at this shop?

It’s not a deal breaker I’ve only had this happen in one spot to one client in 12 years of tattooing. With that said we should just be careful about what your first piece is.…

From the moment we walked in, we were greeted warmly and immediately made to feel at ease. The shop itself is very clean and welcoming. The jewelry is beautifully displayed. I just wish I remembered the name of the woman who helped us because she made such an impression. She walked us through all the options at different price points in a way that felt completely neutral and respectful. There was no subtle steering toward something more expensive. It genuinely felt like whatever we chose was the right choice. Ivy, my piercer, was incredibly thorough and precise. I really want to stress how pleasant and painless this piercing was. I am talking pain level 0 out of 10. I AM NOT MAKING THAT UP. She is extremely clean in her process and talked me through every step so I always knew what was happening. The room itself felt like a doctor's office in terms of cleanliness and professionalism. I wanted to write this because there aren't many reviews here about septum piercings specifically. When I was searching for where I wanted to go, Oak and Poppy kept coming up but I didn't see many septum reviews. Ivy is a true professional in this work. It's clear she knows exactly what she's doing. The staff cares about the customer's experience and it shows every step of the way. If you're looking for a septum piercing and want an experience that feels comfortable, this is the place to go! Thank you Ivy! Thank you Oak and Poppy!

My husband and I got matching tattoos here and for the tattoo itself it's 3 stars. Today, it has been 3 days since we got the tattoo and although the tattoo itself is small, has fine lines, and is on the wrist, it appears as if it has a smear/smudge on one of the corners on both tattoos. This isn't my first tattoo, and my husband and I have been following the after care and have been careful. It's on the healing stage, but you can tell that the corner line differs and there is a smudged area on both tattoos. For both these it was $240 total and done by Chris. I will update this review once the tattoos heal completely.

He wanted double bands around his forearm and Sam was able to sketch it out and do the tattoo on the same day. We were in and out within 1.5 hours. He explained the process and aftercare which made getting a tattoo seamless and less daunting. I was on the fence about getting a tattoo but my friend said if he got one I would have to get one too. I decided to get a runner with an ekg as I thought it was fitting for me. I wanted something small for my first tattoo and easily to keep hidden from my mom (sorry mom). He asked me to send him a picture of what I wanted and scheduled an appointment for Monday at 11am. Once Monday came I walked over and signed the consent form. He then printed out the tattoo and placed the outline on my chest and asked me if it was where I wanted it. Being a tattoo noob I trusted his judgement. After letting the outline dry I laid down and he began working on the piece. He said since it was a small tattoo and mainly lines there shouldn't be much pain and the healing process wouldn't be as long. It took about 30 mins to finish up the tattoo and the quality came out amazing. There was no pain at all and he went over the aftercare as well. I showed Sam this other tattoo I wanted and he said he would be able to do that as well. He says his art style is realism and anime so I can't wait to get more work done by him. He has been tattooing for 2 years now along with his apprenticeship. He told me to message him when I'm ready for my next piece. Maybe this tattoo thing is an addiction and will keep you coming back for more.
