Choosing a new auto shop is a difficult task. I know very little about cars, and it seems like…read morealmost everything related to cars is very unfriendly to women, or maybe to people in general. So I looked on Yelp to find a place in the area that had good reviews. Pleasant Street Auto only had two reviews, but they also took the time to post their own description. And, I liked the range of photos (I'll admit that I was a bit charmed by the photo of someone spray-painting a dinosaur) and the notion that there would be a place to sit and do work, comfortably, not literally sitting outside on a curb as I've had to do on occasion in the past. I was not a great customer up front, I'll admit. I completely forgot our first appointment, and then I became lost on my way for the remedial appointment. Throughout, the staff was patient and professional with me. I can't say a word about the garage/work area because I never saw it, which felt a little odd, but I could certainly get used to it! I don't have the slightest idea what the machines and tools are for, anyway, and so I don't know that seeing and hearing mechanics work really enhances my experience. Instead, I left my car and keys and waited inside. The front desk manages repair work, body work, and also Hertz rentals. When I made my oil change appointment, I was a little worried that I might have a serious issue discovered, and I might therefore need to rent a car. If this had been necessary, I could have managed it all at one location. Convenient! The oil change didn't seem to take all that long. I should have timed it, but I didn't. I think the total wait - even though I was late for my appointment, was well under an hour. During that time, I tried to take advantage of the homey waiting area with a t.v. (though the cable was stutteringly-intermittent), WIFI that didn't seem to work at all, and computers with internet service that required someone to come in and fix it for it to work at all. The computers were kind of old, dodgy, and dirty, but I was able to do some work, which was great. For families, there are toys and books (for kids and adults) and an area for children to hang out and play. I can only imagine that, since the space is open and adjacent to the desk area, it's not much fun for staff when the space gets "active," but it's very nice an accommodating. Overall, this is a huge leap over sitting on a solitary chair in a drafty space next to a noisy garage, or as said, literally sitting on a curb because there's no indoor seating at all. The best bit was that Lee, I believe a member of the family who runs this business, came out to speak with me personally while they were finishing up with the car. He spoke with me in language that I could understand, but not with condescension. There were a number of potential issues with the car, and he prioritized them for me, but he didn't make me feel pressured in any way. I feel like Yelp helped me to find a great fit for a new auto shop, and it's a great relief. I'd highly recommend this establishment to anyone who wants to feel confident about a family-run business that is professional, caring, and extremely well-rounded in terms of services available at a single location. I arrived at 10:45 a.m. this morning for a state inspection at Brad's, which lists its hours as…read moreopen until noon on both its website and on the service door entrance. There was no sign on the door or at the counter about closing early or stopping inspections. I waited about 15 minutes before being told by the inspector that he wasn't doing any more inspections for the day because he was tired after being there since 8 a.m. He said he told the customer before me that he would be his last inspection -- but another customer wouldn't be responsible for telling me that, and he did not. If there's a cutoff time for inspections, it really needs to be clearly posted so people don't waste their time showing up well before closing and being turned away. Very poor customer service. I do wonder whether the owner or manager is aware of this decision to stop inspections early and the impact it has on customers.

Very unfortunate experience at E & G Auto. This story begins…read morewith Brake fluid leaking from my car and my 2012 Subaru Outback. I check the calipers and there is no fluid leaking so I must assume that its either coming the Master Cylinder or the lines underneath the heat shield. I am skilled enough to do most break work myself, but have no lift, therefore making breaklines near impossible for me to complete. I bring it in Friday 7/7. Come monday (7/10) I get a phone call from Brian telling me that one of my bleeder screws on my calipers is leaking and wont stop, they tried another screw but it is still leaking and therefore he caliper needs to be replaced and that I would be unable to take the car off the lot due to the loss of the use of the breaks. I ask Brian if the snapped the screw and she said no, I then ask him if they stripped the threads on the bleed screw from overtightining and Brian says no, everything is fine it just leaks. This is when I let him know that the caliper is only 9 MONTHS OLD, and that his garage has been thre only garage who serviced those breaks and that I had no leaks until last month. I let him know my feelings that I believe they have damaged the screw during the bleeding process and that I want to see the parts when I come to pick up the car. He tells me that I dont understand what I am talking about and that it is just a defective part. I tell them to fix it so I can leave the garage which almost doubles the initial cost of service. Brian also let me know that the car was first priority and that I would be able to pick it up mid day. He then calls me later and lets me know that the simple job has not been done. I let him know I will have to pick it up 7/12. So coming back from my trip I show up on 7/12 to pick up my car. Before I pay for anything I let Brian know that I want to inspect the old Caliper. We walk back in the garage and the bleeder screw is screwed into the caliper all the way, I unscrew it and inspect it and as I suspected the threads are completely destroyed and some of the metal from the threads are sitting on the receiving end of the seat which is causeing the problem as the area needs to remain clean and flush in order to create the seal. I explained to Brian, that its not the threads that create the Seal of a bleeder screw but the seat, and that the stripped threads have destroyed the seat, rendering the caliper useless. Brian was Shocked, he began to studder and mumble that this and said that E/G didnt do it and was not responsible. They allow me to inspect the car and I ask the technician what happened. He let me know that he cut back the brake lines and fixed the leak from the rear line opposite side of the affected caliper. He then said while bleeding the system he shut the bleeder screw it was still was leaking. The he said "I tried to tighten the screw some more but it wouldnt work" I knew this was the problem and that act of overtightening cause the damage as those screws are not designed to be cranked. This part is entered into the repair report. The proper procedure would be to remove the screw, inspect the seat, and attempt to clean any corrosion or debris that has gotten in the way of the seat to create the seal. NEVER OVERTIGHTEN. I then return to the office with Brian and say that we have a dispute. My claim is that they have damaged the caliper and that I do not want to pay for that portion. He Disagrees and says he "Stands by his technician." and would be unwilling to make things right with me. I asked him to seperate the jobs so I can have seperate transactions, Brian gave me the hardest time about this, heather the receptionist was trying to to walk him through it and he shushed her. Brian went in the back and I asked about the owner Eric and Heather said he doesnt deal with customers. This whole interaction was all recorded if Eric wants to review. Since i see him responding to these posts. It is sad that there was no resolution whatsover. All that needed to happen was for them to own the mistake and comp me for the caliper and labor of the caliper, E/G would have still made some money from my brake line job and I would have been a customer for life.

They say a first impression means a lot. So I'm giving a two what really should have been a one…read morefrom my "first" impression. Stopped by for a inspection sticker this afternoon. I was yelled at from inside to bring my vehicle into the stall. Okay, a bit odd I thought, as most places will bring the vehicle inside themselves. No big problem/ I then tried to make conversation with who ever was doing the inspection, might as well have been talking to myself. Even my dogs will give a response, which this fellow did not. I felt as though I was being a bother, yet I was the only person there. After I was dialed for a minor exhaust leak, ... I asked "where, ... the muffler? That rattle?" His only response was "Fix the exhaust. Fix the exhaust". He also kept my registration, perhaps to ensure I'll return. In the meantime. I'm driving without proof of registration, with a BIG RED "R" on my front windshield. Ie knew there was a exhaust problem BEFORE he even brought the vehicle in from where I had driven it to the front of the stall, ... yet he proceeded to scrape off my sticker, which STILL had 5 days on it, only to inform, ... "Fix the exhaust". I've seen better "Old Time Service" from the Mass registry of motor vehicles, which in my opinion is perhaps where this fellow should be working. I suspect I'll be returning tomorrow or on Monday (after a exhaust shop repair this evening setting me back a couple of hundred bucks), I will only hope this mans temperament will be much better for a second impression.

When I expressed concern over the high diagnostic cost, I was informed it would be another $190 to purchase and install the part. This brought the total estimate to $360 just for a carburetor replacement. While I paid the diagnostic fee and respect the technician's time, paying $170 to take home a completely unrepaired lawn mower feels incredibly unreasonable.
