My husband had a meal with a little of everything, and it was all delicious. I had the taco salad and was equally pleased. There was a generous portion of beef and the perfect amount of veggies. My husband's meal came with a free sopaipilla that was huge, so I just had to help him eat it...The servers operate as a team and each member that checked on us was friendly and attentive. Matthew D has informed me that they do not use cumin in their red chili. I accept that information, but stand on the fact that whatever spice they do use, it is way to heavy and overshadows the other flavors of the food. Sorry Matt- we had been dining there for years, there most assuredly has been a change to the mix somewhere- the red chili has a very different taste to it. So far as the other "assurances" go- if it was one person expressing the concern that would be one thing, but there are many and that suggests strongly there is an issue. The food tasted like it came from a can. Employees are friendly. Especially the green chili. Who serves green chili from a can in New Mexico, honestly? The red chili tasted canned too. They charge for every little thing like they're going out of business. read more

I was here for a business lunch, and suffice it to say I will actively try to steer away from here in the future. We were sat outside, which was pleasant enough with the weather, but the sound of the cars passing by on the road right behind us was distinctly distracting. The service was poor as well, as we were interrupted multiple times while speaking to one another, to the point where I had to ask the several people who had for some reason stopped by our table (none of which were our server) to leave us alone (and the drink refill rate was also somewhat lacking): all this and I have not yet gotten to the food. The food was poor, with very little flavor: I ordered the carne adovada enchilada with red chile, and about the only flavor I really got from my plate was salt, and it ended up making my slightly ill later that night: definitely stay away, if you are looking for a signature Abq NM cuisine, at very reasonable prices definitely go to El Pinto instead (Edit 1/17/10: forget El Pinto, it is a tourist trap, make your way to Sadie's on the west side of town) read more

What happened to the chile, Monroe's? This is New Mexico. We like hot chile--well, I do. I live here (in ABQ) and frequent places for lunch or dinner. I don't come here often but my coworkers and I stopped by yesterday (9/15/2016). Customer service is superb. Everything about Monroe's is excellent, except the food. Maybe it's become more of a tourist spot for trying out NM chile, I don't know. Food was bland. I'll recommend to others but I prefer hot red and green chile. I must say that the wait staff were extraordinarily friendly and kept an eye on us making sure everything went well. Thank you! read more

We went to Monroe's the other night and ate the ribs. They were insanely good. Unfortunately I ate a whole rack and had to be wheeled home. There was a lot of really good food. We've never had bad service or bad food. The wait staff always works together, so you don't ever get the "not my table" excuse. The owner has come over to our table on many occasions, he is a really nice guy. I would go back in a heartbeat. read more

I come from a town where red and green chili are served in abundance and my move to Albuquerque scared me because I thought I'd never find it again. Well I did at Monroe's and my anxiety and fears are over. I went for the first time on Father's Day and it was the best experience I received so far. The sopapillas were so fresh and the salsa was the best I've had in years. I have found my new favorite spot. read more

Pretty nice place. I like all the plants hanging and especially that they are not dusty and well taken care of. The service was great at first, this was the first time I had ever been asked if I wanted garnish on my plate (lettuce, tomatoes, onions). Thank you, I appreciate the chance to not have lettuce on my plate. It seems more and more restaurants are not giving out the complimentary chips & salsa, and Monroe's is on that list, and seems to add a few extra bucks to the entree plates and then you are served the chips and salsa. Our server took our order of chile relleno, and stuffed sopapilla. My husband was impressed and had a good experience, but the so papilla was on the thicker side and not crispy. The chile relleno was small but fresh and tasty, and per the usual a bit too much batter. Our server never came back to our table as he seemed to be training someone. We tried 5-6 times to get the attention of another server to get our check, but finally my husband had to get up and ask someone to get it for us. We will probably go back again, but not sure when. read more

Salty and soggy food. Horrible! My beef rolled tacos were super salty and not crunchy at all. I have had horrible luck with New Mexican restaurants in ABQ, maybe I'm just not a fan. It pains me to do this because I've been a fan of Monroe's since the early 80's, but the last 3 visits to Monroe's have been a monumental disappointment. Last night was the death nail. The service was good. No complaints there. I ordered the huevos rancheros green. The green chile had no kick to it - just north of green tomatoes. Not only that, it had a "wet dog" smell to it. The eggs and chile sat on a single corn tortilla. Sad. I'm afraid that Monroe's has succumbed to the pressures of those who can't take the heat. They used to be the go-to restaurant to get good, hot green chile. I will no longer recommend Monroe's in the future. There are so many better options in Albuquerque. Sorry Miguel and Kathy. You let your gem of a restaurant get away from you. I've had better chile in Portland. read more

Maybe not the best Alb New Mexican food joint, but big points for being consistently good. Maybe not the best chips and salsa, but they are still good. Very good open face breakfast burrito. Very good red (with pork) and green chile. When it's warm, the outside patio is also very nice. I have been here twice and everything was great both times. This is quickly becoming my go to for new Mexican food. The Chile relleno burrito was excellent,as well as the calabacitas.the Chile sauces are hot enough to announce their presence without stripping the enamel off your teeth. read more

It was our first time coming here. I was getting a little annoyed with the service, until one of them told me they work as a team. I ordered the combo plate but substituted the tamale for a Chile relleno and I'm so glad that I did. The food was amazing! My boyfriend and I are usually picky with Mexican food being that were both used to homemade authentic Mexican food. However, Monroe's did not disappoint. We will be back. read more

Great family atmosphere. Fast and friendly service. This place fills up for lunch, so get there early to get a parking spot and a seat. This is a great place for a casual meal with family, friends, or business associates. They convinced me to add sweet potatoes to my burrito and it was phenomenal. read more

Awesome New Mexican food, in a very nice setting, for a great price. One of the better places to bring out of town company. Great service in part due to that every server is your waiter. Very friendly staff as well. It's less greasy than Sadie's (probably their main competitor, especially since now they're just down the road), and just as good. Where Sadie's is probably a little more authentic New Mexican food, Monroe's is a little more "Americanized." For example, Monroe's has sweet potato fries as a side dish. Surprisingly, they have a really great hamburger as well! read more

Help me out why this place gets four stars? I ordered the seafood enchilada and guess what was inside? Most of it was IMITATION crab and only few microscopic-sized shrimp. The food was only slightly warm and the cream sauce tasted like it came from a can. I can't believe they charge $13 for an imitation crab seafood enchilada. Food was good, service was horrible. Teenage girl took our order and I never saw her again. She spent her time talking with another waitress and never came back to check on us. We had to bother another waiter for refills, etc. Welet the girl at cash register know and her response was that she new and they have been having that problem lately. If other staff know this then manger probably knows this but is doing nothing about it. It's too bad because the food is good but having to wait 20 minutes for no one and then have to bother other people for help is a shame. read more

This restaurant's first location on Lomas Blvd. has a sterling reputation for great authentic New Mexican cuisine. I was eager to compare this location. The atmosphere was more casual than I expected and I noticed the fragrance of bleach in the air as I entered. The salsa was tasty and the chips were a waaay salty experience. My chimichanga was very high-end; a delicate flaky tortilla surrounding moist tender carne adovada, lots of cheese and great mild chili. The beans and rice were flavorful. My plate was all I could have hoped for on a chimichanga. My friend enjoyed his enchiladas too. No. Complaints! Saboroso! read more
