Monroe's has been a favorite restaurant of our family for years. It's such a common place for us that I've never thought before to write a review. The ambience there is warm & homey traditional New Mexican. The food is dependably delicious. They specialize in New Mexican food, but there are other choices on the menu. There is even a low-carb menu, and there are vegetarian choices as well. Everything I've tried has been really good, usually excellent! At a time when other New Mexican restaurants (even more expensive ones) have switched to the cheap, high fructose-based "sopa sauce," Monroe's serves only delicious & healthy local, real honey. We had lunch there for Valentine's Day & it was FABULOUS! I ordered the Fajitas with steak & chicken. My hunny ordered the ground beef Chimichanga. We sampled each others plates & both were delish! I have visited 3 times and always ordered the flat, red, cheese enchilada plate with beans and rice. Every time it has been perfectly delicious! Not too spicy but with a kick. My son always gets the beef taco plate. We enjoy their chips and salsa and LOVE the sopapillas with honey! :) The service is always amazing (they work as a team) and friendly. While I have not tried a lot on their menu, Monroe's has always done very well by us! read more

Not very often I am greeted by the owner in a suit at a Mexican restaurant. Nor would I expect to get chili glazed salmon as my entree. And they still have traditional Mexican entrees too. My review may be a little different because my wife and I went through the To-Go area, but the staff was nice and had great suggestions for trying the New Mexico Signature style of green chili. I got the Indian Taco and my wife got the super combination. She said it was "okay" and that the guacamole was, well, not on-a-roll-e. But she said the food stood the test of her expectations. My food was quite good, I enjoyed the twist on the food and I will most likely go back. Overall, what I paid for, didn't really live up to what I get at other places for less. I was pretty excited about trying this place because I love New Mexican food places. They even offered chips and salsa during breakfast hours!! "Oh sure" we said. Well that was a sneaky $3.25 charge at the end. Food was barely average when it comes to New Mexican food, place is dated and looks very dirty inside. On top of all that they thought it was a good idea to have someone spraying glass cleaner and wiping windows 2 feet away from my plate. Yeah I love the smell of ammonia while I'm eating... A short trip to the Q for a family reunion and only had 3 chances to eat NM cuisine. Monroe's has always been our go to place and it did not disappoint. The service was quick and efficient - got everything right. I think Monroe's red sauce is the best in town. And their green sauce is really, really good, too. And their sopapillas were the best we had during our visit. Chips were crisp and table salsa was just right. I had the lunch combo plate and each item, the tamale, the enchilada and the relleno were well prepared and delicious. Price-wise, I think it is a good value. Better food and less expensive than other popular NM restaurants in town. The only thing that keeps this from being a five star establishment in my opinion, is the cleanliness. I know it is a challenge when you are running a very popular eatery with constant crowds and little down time but the table had a slight greasy feel, there were lots of crumbs underfoot and the ladies room needed a thorough cleaning. read more

I would hesitate to eat here again. Wait staff explained that they had a "team" approach to service & that we could ask any of the waiters if we needed anything. Sounded great at first until we noticed that every time we asked for something it never arrived. Left hand didn't know what the right was doing. We had drinks that never arrived, sweet potato fries that never arrived, and 2 sopadillas that never arrived. Aside from poor wait staff, the food wasn't great. Didn't taste authentic & everything was dripping in oil. I had indigestion for 2 days after eating here. I wouldn't recommend if looking for good Mexican food. read more

We had Monroe's cater our wedding and it was mind-blowing. Choosing a caterer for such an occasion is super stressful especially when you don't know where to turn. We wanted something different but affordable and they hit every mark. We approached Monroe's because a friend recommended them. We love Monroe's as a restaurant but didn't really know what they could bring to the table in onsite catering. We didn't want typical NM food (enchiladas, beans, rice) but we did want to give our (mostly out-of-town) wedding guests a taste of New Mexican flavor. We met with Sean and he took notes about our "Elevated New Mexican" idea. He came back with ideas outside of the box that are not typical menu items. Mole-rubbed steak, stuffed poblanos, etc. He was careful to include options for our DF/GF/Vegan guests that weren't just a consolation prize on a plate. He asked questions about things we hadn't thought of and offered help in sourcing plates/napkins/flatware/etc. since we had our wedding at a DIY venue and had to think of literally everything! Onsite, they shined. They cooked at the venue which meant the meat didn't dry out and everything was fresh and seriously the best I've ever tasted. My wedding or not, this was the best wedding food I've ever experienced. Our guests were incessant about telling us so. In a nutshell, Monroe's showed itself as more than just a good restaurant with a great menu. They are true chefs who are willing to use their talents and experience to create a variety of options and ideas to provide exactly what you want. Stop shopping around and just use them. We had a party of 8 that went to Monroe's on Osuna this evening. The bottom line was that we has a good time & the food was good. We brought a couple from Texas to experience New Mexico food for the first time. We had 6 different dishes and all received good reports from the people eating them. I had 2 Chili Rellenos, which I get at a lot of locations, and it was good but had been over cooked a little. This made the breading hard to cut with a knife. The chili and cheese were good. The best part of the meal was the red chili sauce. At this moment in time this is the best red chili sauce I have ever tasted. The service was great and we did not feel rushed. Perto Rican Night at Monroes I specifically wanted to review the food that was prepared for Puerto Rican night. I am Puerto Rican and am familiar with the cuisine. The plate at Monroes was without exaggeration the worst meal I have ever tasted in all my years. I'm not trying to be mean, but my hope is that they will re evaluate the menu and recipes. I have recommended Monroes for their Puero Rican night dozens of times because this type of cuisine is delicious and as a Puertorican I am proud of their food and heritage. Experiencing the meal for myself, I am embarrassed that I recommended it. It was just off. It was a platter with mounds of unappealing looking food, which included 3 types of beans (overkill) Most were not seasoned in the traditional way, some tasteless. (A packet of sazon Goya would go a long way to improving the flavor) The mofongo was ruined by a brown gravy. (It's supposed to be served in broth) The arroz con gandules was edible but tasteless and unseasoned, the salad was drenched in dressing, which is sort of ok, except it had been sitting a while since it was wilted, the tostones could have been ok but they were smothered with garlic chunks, but worst of all the meat (both the chicken and pork options) had a bad taste about it (almost bitter/rancid) that rendered it inedible. On the plus side, the customer service was good, the meal was replaced with the selection of our choice and I give the restaurant credit for that. But the PR meal was really, really bad. I would love the tradition of having PR night to be maintained at Monroes, but the menu needs serious reconsideration. Maybe a trip to PR is in order to reacquaint with what the food typically tastes like and how it's prepared. Or at least visit Talin's and purchase achiote, sazon, sofrito and a few traditional spanish seasonings and reattempt that menu. And if you cant redo the whole menu, please start with the meat dishes. Even if you had plain old rotisserie chicken with a hint of garlic, that is WAY closer to a puerto rican restaurant that what Monroe's served. read more

The service was HORRIBLE!!!!!! Four different people came to clarify my food order and it still came out wrong!!! All the servers were rude!!! And the cashier had such a bad attitude and kept making excuses for their HORRIBLE service!!!! DO NOT EVER GO HERE!!! They never fix the problems and the managers don't even come out to check on the guest if there has been a problem!!! Everybody there has the WORST attitude!!! Mmm Mmm New Mexican food. I've been making the rounds since returning to Albuquerque after moving away 15 years ago and finally made it to Monroe's. I love chile relleno and someone told me they had very good chile relleno so I built my own combination plate with a relleno, a beef and whole bean stuffed sopapilla, and a cheese enchilada. When it comes to "Red or green" I am a a green man, except enchiladas and am I glad I got an enchilada. Maybe the best red sauce I've had. None of the bitterness, just tasty goodness. The green chile was pretty good. The stuffed sopapilla was a bit too soggy for my liking but the meat was well seasoned. The relleno isn't probably the best in town but it was cooked right. I hate rubbery chile relleno. Finishing off the meal, I had a fried ice cream, another favorite of mine. And though it was overpriced for the portion, it was good. Overall, not the cheapest food in town (about $10-15 a person average) but quality. And the staff were attentive and great which is a nice change from glasses need refills. read more

Great salsa, good chile, good food. Overpriced though, checkout just the price and size of a side of salsa, chips, rice or beans which cost them next to nothing when trying to takeout. Chips are free when you sit in which is odd they don't do that for you for carryout. Prices on entrees are above the norm and have shrank as well over the years. Service is very hit and miss. Could be great, could be bad. Everyone serves you here rather than one server. That has the plus of making sure your drink is filled but the constant checking in by multiple people gets annoying. You can tell some of them honestly don't care much either. Probably because they don't have to focus on doing well to get a good tip this way. We go back, and do recommend this place. But we miss the way they used to be when the old owners on the menu ran this long ago. Go in expecting good New Mexican, but at prices higher than the competition and strange service model. read more
