I don't know what was going on today but it was a completely different vibe today. My family eats here pretty frequently after church on Sundays. Usually service & food are on point! Today we had to ask for chips & salsa, drinks were not refilled till we had to ask, my stuffed sopapilla was hard & seemed old. My son's chimichanga was dark like it had been fried in old oil. Prices went up since the last time we were there last, probably a month, and they no longer include sopapillas with their platters. Restaurant was highly recommended by front desk at hotel, glad we listened to the suggestion. Easy and ample parking, nice clean dining area with space between tables. Greeted and seated quickly, the customer service was amazing. They set the standard for friendly and helpfulness, every staff member would check on our table as they passed. Our food arrived quick and hot, our chips were even replaced without asking (we were hungry), everything we ordered tasted amazing. I tried something out of my wheelhouse based on staff guidance, a stuffed fried pepper with lots of cheese fried and more cheese. It was delicious !!! We were driving through Albuquerque and stopped here for lunch. The service was good but our server left half way through our meal and it was a little chaotic after that to get our check and boxes. I got the taco salad with chicken and it had little to no flavor and was very watery. I didn't like that they made the guacamole spicy. The other people in my group liked their meals. Just outside of Old Town, you won't be disappointed in this breakfast/lunch gem. I had stacked enchiladas topped with an egg. My enchiladas were served in a red sauce with just the right amount of spiciness. SO had the burger that had grilled hatch chilies. Lettuce and tomato on the side the way he likes it. While in town for vacation I asked my friend for a good local spot. She recommended Monroe's. I was not impressed. When I tried the salsa and chips I was excited the salsa had great flavor, was fresh and had a bit of kick. The service was fantastic ( a real team effort) but the food was boring and overcooked. My child's cheeseburger was dry and burnt and the cheese was fried around the edges. She only had 2 bites and it was not worth saving when I saw how blackened it was. My chicken burrito was a large portion but for a Mexican restaurant I was sad to find there was no flavor. Seems NO spices were added to the cooked chicken. It was underwhelming. Must try: Chile Relleno! Why: Authentic New Mexican dish that was tasty! Notes: We came 5 minutes before closing after driving 10+ hours from Dallas, TX, and the workers were incredibly welcoming. The host was incredibly helpful, never rushed us, and provided honest recommendations on New Mexican cuisine. We ordered combination platters and soups for takeout. She gave us Sopapilla (fry bread) with honey and it was the perfect way to finish our meal. It was actually quite addicting but we ended up finishing all the Sopapillas even though we were full from the platters and soup! We also bought some of their famous Chile as gifts for some friends. Lastly, while waiting for them to cook our order to-go, we enjoyed some refreshing New Mexican beer while enjoying a conversation with the other workers. Good local food! We split the fajitas - the beef tasted very different than what we are used to. Almost an Asian stir-fry type flavor. It wasn't unpleasant, just a little surprising. The chips and salsa were delightful and burn your lips spicy. We asked for sopas post-meal (looking at reviews we thought they came automatically but it seems like not always). The staff have a team approach to service - no specified person for your table. The benefit is that everyone is responsible for customer service. The downside is there's no one really keyed in on the small things (like the fact that we were splitting and needed two plates - or that it wasn't time to take our plates). Here from out of town. Since I'm from Southern California, I normally refuse to eat any sort of Mexican food anywhere else. New Mexico is the only exception I make. Came here after about 2 hours of trying to decide where to go. Upon arrival I was instantly greeted and told to sit wherever I wanted. Kayla, my server immediately approached me and got my drink order and chips and salsa. The salsa had just the right kind of kick to it. Kayla helped me decide what I wanted. I got the super platter combination, a taco, a tamale and an enchilada. Everything was super tasty. The only thing I didn't care a whole lot for was the taco shell but I'd order again. The atmosphere is bustling but not too bad for a Friday night. Every single person who works here is friendly and helpful. Ms Jackie walked past a few time with her Infectious smile and warm demeanor. These were ladies definitely are an asset to this place. I'm grateful for the good service and delicious food. We had dinner here earlier tonight. The space is interesting in a community college cafeteria way. Not much personality, but lots of space and clean. The salsa part of the chips and salsa was good, flavorful and spicy. The chips ... suggestion: try replacing them with those you get at a big box store (Costco, Sam's) since that would be a drastic improvement. My wife had carne adovado sopapilla, and I had the carne adovado enchiladas. We agreed that the pork was dry, lacking in moisture. We would have also preferred more spice, which was mostly lost to the flavor of the covering sauce. I was hungry enough to eat my enchiladas, my wife ate most of the sopapilla but didn't finish. The refried beans seemed to have been passed through a blender and had a paste like texture, although the flavor was decent. The Spanish rice was some of the least flavorful I've had in quite some time. I personally favor the Rice-a-Roni version. My wife ordered her meal without onions, but the dish was covered in them. In all fairness, the server offered to redo the dish, but by that time my wife had picked through most of them so decided to soldier on. The desert sopapillas were an excellent medium to transfer honey to one's mouth. They were large. Their texture was not right, not light and flakey but heavier, more like empanadas. I would steer clear of this place, there's just got to be better options around. read more

She ordered the special, which was a chicken fried steak with green chili gravy and eggs, with a good serving of Papas (aka potatoes for you non-Nuevo Mexicanos). I ordered the classic, Monroe's skillet, which is a heaping serving of papas, bell peppers, onions, bacon, ham. I had mine smothered with green chili and topped with an over easy egg. I am a self prescribed connoisseur of chicken fried steak and eggs, so when I took a bite of the wife's food....It made me quickly rethink, "did I order the best thing?". It was delicious. The green chili gravy was amazing. The chicken fried steak was crispy and juicy. Now to the classic, Monroe's Skillet. Man how they combine and cook up all the ingredients together should be a crime. The flavors all compliment each other, and you add some chili, egg, and a side of sopapillas to help scoop it all up, you can't go wrong. I travel to the area for work about once a month and have been to Monroe's a couple times. The food is always fresh, and I've always ordered chicken fajitas. There are so many options on their menu and the place is usually bustling. I had a margarita drink which was okay. Nothing over the top, but satisfying, nonetheless. I ordered chips with queso and that was excellent. Warm, fresh chips and the queso was great as well! One Sopapilla for dessert with a bit of honey. Usually those come out warm, but mine wasn't warm this time and was a bit disappointing, but still tasted great! I'm writing this review after going 6 times over the past two months: They have a lot of options on the menu, and a second and third menu- the second has a carb net count on it for those of us keto people. The third is a vegetarian menu. How inclusive is that!?! I've also tried food from the non-keto side like their combination enchiladas (the chicken stays moist!!! And the Carne is heaven). The sopapillas are worth their weight in gold. Chips and salsa are awesome as well- the chips are nice and crunchy even after dunking them in the salsa. Service was great! The green chili cheeseburger that my boyfriend ordered was very good. I had the beef enchiladas with blue corn tortillas. They were pretty good, but I was wishing that I had gotten the carne adovada instead. The sopaipilla ended up being the highlight of my meal. She was not the same waitress that took out order. When we paid at the register, the manager argued with us as he was charging us for the sopas. I was charged $16.95 for cheese enchiladas and $1.95 for the egg! When I got the bill I brought the problem to my servers attention. Another server came to the table and explained that since I ate the wrong order, the manager would not change the amount charged! How was I supposed to know that what I was served wasn't the breakfast Cheese Enchiladas with eggs that I ordered? What can be improved is the server needs to know the menu and be sure she has the right entree written down. I pointed to the item I wanted on breakfast menu when I ordered. You can tell they paid attention to each item on their menu. Even the rice and beans were a step above. Now, what I think makes them super special, beyond great tasting food, is that the servers,who all look pretty young, I wouldn't be surprised if some were just out of high school, all looked like that wanted to be there. I got fajitas my first time and loved it, ate the whole skillet. Their sopapillas are also really nice! I've also had their huevos rancheros and loved it as well! Again, it's incredibly affordable while also being filling. One thing I'd warn about though is that they offer chips and salsa and it's not complimentary. I have the huevos rancheros with toast and coffee. The food was extremely a lot better. Customer service was good except I had to ask for one cup of coffee refill. Face mask are required. Staff wears face masks also. Right now they only have outdoor patio seating with a hater that doesn't work too good,Or they have carry out. We ordered to go and try staff was very professional wearing masks, the owner was there, in the kitchen but he was not wearing a mask. We thought that was odd. Our waitress was very on too of things and very helpful. This location is not in the best part of town, but everyone was friendly.
