Makes complete sense because everything looks super cute and it's a beautiful day out, but I really wasn't expecting a 1-hour wait for this new spot at lunchtime (they barely opened!) and it had gone up to 2 hours by the time we finished our lunch. While the vibe gets 5 stars from me, the food/service still have a long way to go. We ordered the following: * Fresh squeezed OJ: Really small glass of minute-maid tasting OJ, we confirmed that it was freshly squeezed this morning but our waitress was kind enough to take it away/cancel it from our check * Bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich: Thick slab of bacon and cheddar on fluffy scrambled egg atop a soft roll! This was so-so, it needed seasoning and I splashed some Tabasco on it. Overall too soft for my taste... I was also surprised to hear that they were out of sausage when my bar neighbor tried to order it! * Crispy potatoes: Also on the underseasoned side! They were definitely browned on the outside but it's a stretch to call them crispy. The insides were nice and soft, with the outsides perfectly matching. I added salt/pepper and a lot of ketchup. * Hippie sandwich: This healthy vegetarian-friendly sandwich was crisp and refreshing! A wee bit on the small side, it definitely needs something besides the added pickle to fill you up. * Fries: My highlight of the meal! French fries with a rugged and golden-crisp exterior, perfect for holding on to all the ketchup you could ever want. It felt like (but I didn't time it so I could've been a wee bit hangry) a 15+ minute wait for our items, and eventually a bowl of potato chips was placed in front of each group sitting at the bar but this didn't help much since it appeared after our meal... there were some other items on the menu that caught my eye such as the Early Bird Special (eggs, bacon/sausage, toast, and a drink) for less than $15, as well as some dinner items such as the Steak Frites and Broccolini but I'll wait a couple months for them to work things out before heading back. read more

The old Happy Days diner had been closed for several years and we were eagerly awaiting a new food venue on the block. Montague Diner opened yesterday (March 18) and has been an instant favorite! Very nice retro feel, lighting and booths, with a beautiful (original?) tile floor. The staff is very upbeat, friendly and helpful, and the food is excellent diner fare. This is the true diner we've been waiting for in Brooklyn Heights! We had the American burger, cooked medium rare as requested, with excellent French fries, and a very good grilled cheese sandwich paired with an extraordinary tomato soup. We also enjoyed chocolate (with chocolate shavings throughout!) and vanilla milkshakes. We finished with the banana cream pie - a delight! Prices are very reasonable (our tab was under $65!). They also serve wine and beer but their selection right now is a bit limited. It's open daily from 6am-11pm, and we plan to return soon to try their dinner menu. We wish them great success here, and have no doubt they will develop a faithful following. read more

TLDR: Rude staff. Staff needs to be retrained desperately. I arrived a little after 11 am for breakfast with some friends. I walked in and the 2 hostesses ( a tall redhead and a short brunette) saw me come in, looked, and continued to have their conversation. No hello, welcome...nothing. Finally, they acknowledged my existence, the redhead finally greeted me, and gave us a table. Our server greeted us (a young guy with piercings - he was pretty cold, but it was fine, we didn't need to be best friends) and asked if we needed more time. We said yes. He came back a little while after, and we ordered our drinks, no problem. When he returned, we ordered our food. Again, no problem. This is where the issue started, while we were eating, we were having our conversation. We soon finished, but my friend was still eating. A new server, outside of the one I had before, asked if we were done and if she could clear our plates, and I said sure. She asked if we wanted anything else, and we said no; however, my friend was still eating. Maybe 10 minutes later, they dropped off the bill. Normally, at any other diner, they say "here is the bill, but no rush, take your time", especially if someone is still eating. We paid the bill, and a few moments later, the hostess (redhead) came to our table and said we need the table. LMAO, what?! There were 3 booths that were empty. It was so weird and hostile for no reason. My friend had to quickly take a few bites of her pancakes and drink her latte before we got up. When we left, they didn't even say bye, have a great day, nothing. Also, by the way, we were there for a little less than an hour. I also didn't see anything on the website about any sort of time limit on tables. I used to go to the Montague Diner a lot before the renovation, and the service was cool. I don't know what happened, but the staff is incredibly rude. We were visiting from California and wanted a Brooklyn diner experience. The ambiance and decor were great but the food was bland.

I wanted to love this place from the day they opened -- they have a great story of Brooklyn creatives reviving a diner. But from day one the food has been meh at best and the service terrible. After 5 or 6 visits, I stopped going. This morning, my husband and I were taking a snowy stroll on the Promenade when he mentioned he saw a good review for the pancakes in NY Mag. He described a nice stack of pancakes, a plate of butter (not those wasteful and annoying plastic packets with dabs of butter) and real maple syrup. I agreed to give the place another try. NEVER AGAIN. The service was so rude, I honestly have never seen ruder service since decades ago in Paris. I understand people have bad days so I make allowances, especially in NYC. But when our plates of pancakes came out, we each got 2 of those plastic packets of butter. When we asked for more butter, the waitress looked at us as if we were greedy and offered up one for the two of us to share. When I giggled and said we'll need more than one, she said "Jesus Christ, you don't have to be so rude!" She then came back and dropped about 15 packets of butter on the table and huffed away. I am in public service. I know if I'm coming across as rude, and I was not rude. She was not just unprofessional, she was surly and seemed to be set out to make our experience miserable. My husband was so upset he got the check and we left without eating. We won't be going back. I advise people to go to the diner across the street, Grand Canyon. It's not chic but the staff couldn't be nicer, the pancakes taste better, and they give you as many annoying plastic packets of butter without asking. This place is seriously a joke. The menu is very basic and wildly overpriced ($18 for 3 little latkes served with applesauce, $18 for chicken fingers, etc.). The food was very mediocre and I honestly question if some of it was just from the frozen section of a grocery store. Since it's recent renovation, this former old-school greasy spoon has been packed. So today, I finally decided to see for myself. Well, it's still a greasy spoon, albeit with much nicer styling and a $85 bottle of wine on the menu. My latkes were too crip, too salt, and the apple cause was a 'canardly' (you can hardly see it). To top things off, they were out of ice tea! That really takes some doing! The only highlight was a customer, who presented one of the wait staff with a bunch of sunflowers. It's $16.00 for the sandwich and $4.00 extra for fries. I have been going to diners all my life in NY and my favorite thing to always order is a turkey club. The club served here was sad. It was a weak turkey sandwich with wilted brown lettuce and one slice of bacon. Not good at all! There are so many other diners in the hood that will truly serve you an amazing club. I only give positive reviews, so I really hate doing this, but if you're going to replace a nostalgic, neighborhood restaurant with a hip, chic, overpriced, new spot you need to at least make a good grilled cheese, especially when you have it on your menu. twice (big and small size). I had high hopes for Montague Diner because my friends and I used to go there back when it was Happy Days - and we have the best memories. From the second I walked in I was excited... pink lighting, a slight buzz in the atmosphere.... the booths looked inviting, although once I sat in them they were a tad bit small. I was 47 minutes late and my friends ordered because they were strongly encouraged to, as not to keep the table too long. After sitting at the table for several minutes I had to flag down a member of the staff and ask for a menu. By the time I received my menu my friends entrees had arrived. I took a look at the dishes hoping to be inspired, but all I saw in front of me was disappointed faces. Amanda's grilled cheese was not melted. At all. It looked like two lightly toasted pieces of sourdough with 2 slices of American cheese in the middle. Served with a tomato soup that literally was separating and looked either extremely watered down or oily... either way- not good. The side... quartered chunks of raw green tomato. Gross. Where were the pickles?! They were on the menu, as a "snack" for $6. Monica asked for cheddar cheese for her grilled cheese. Her bacon was barely cooked and she received American cheese. We sent both dishes back and asked for Amanda's grilled cheese to be melted and Monica's bacon to be cooked and cheese to be cheddar. By the time their dishes came back to the table, my order had arrived. I had ordered pancakes with blueberries and chocolate chips. My pancakes had strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and chocolate chips. What if I had an allergy to strawberries? What if I just didn't want them. ON THEIR MENU IT SAYS PANCAKES w/BLUE BERRIES & CHOCOLATE CHIPS. So if you order that be prepared to get strawberries and blackberries as well. Nevertheless, they tasted great. Really good pancakes. Amanda's grilled cheese ROUND 2 was still barely melted. Monica's grilled cheese ROUND 2 STILL HAD THE WRONG CHEESE. We tried to send it back but, as apologetic as the staff was, the mistake remained on our table. So the pancakes were good. But this spot was really disappointing. I was sitting at the counter for about 14 minutes when I noticed my order was in the kitchen window, the young vibrant staff was talking amongst themselves with a packed house about their weekends and the current series on TV they were watching didn't even offer me a glass of water, but I had to let them know that my order was sitting in the kitchen window waiting for me to take it. UNHAPPY DAYS AT MONTAGUE DINER To much fanfare and social media buzz, Montague Diner opened recently in the former Happy Days Diner space. Yes, I get it. It's like an elevated Diner experience. Unfortunately, not elevated quite enough as far as I am concerned. Walking in on a dreadfully windy and rainy night, we were greeted by a "host" who could only be described as cold and indifferent. We changed our reservation from 4 to 5 people earlier in the afternoon yet were were brought to a booth for 4. The food was hit or miss. "The best French fries I ever had in my life" said two in our group. I thought grilled cheese and tomato soup sounded like a great choice on such a miserable night. Expecting something like a gooey gruyere and a delicious bread, what I got instead tasted like Wonder bread and Kraft singles. The tomato soup looked like French dressing and tasted weird. Others liked their entrees, some felt it was so-so and one thought the steak portion was skimpy for the steak frites. Here's where they really failed. I ordered pecan pie and a friend asked if they could put a candle in it. The waitress said "we don't have any candles." First of all, what restaurant doesn't have a candle? Second, how about trying your best by delivering the pie with a votive candle on the pie plate? Nope. They didn't care that I came to their restaurant to celebrate my birthday. By the way the pecan pie tasted like it came from Key Food up the street. The place is new. They deserve time to get their bearings so I will give it another try soon. This diner is terrible. My wife and I wanted to like it. We were looking forward to trying it for a while, since it's the only diner left in the area. But the food was almost inedible (how do you screw up a cheeseburger and fries that badly?). We had to force ourselves to eat our $20 cheeseburgers-- they were that bad. And, on top of that, the place is not well cared for. There were leftover black beans on our table around the ketchup, and the staff didn't seem to care at all about the cleanliness of the place.
