I recently visited Montana's at Tillicum Mall in Victoria and had a mixed experience. The service was excellent from start to finish. We were greeted right away, seated promptly, and the staff were friendly and attentive throughout our visit. The atmosphere was comfortable and the noise level was just right -- busy enough to feel lively but still easy to have a conversation. Unfortunately, the potato skins were very disappointing. They were so dry and hard that I couldn't even chew the edges. The toppings and sauce had good flavor, but the texture of the skins made them difficult to eat and took away from the dish. Overall, the great service and welcoming environment stood out, but the food quality -- at least the potato skins -- didn't meet expectations. Wednesday is all you can eat rib night and as we had never been before we thought we would check out the new Montana's in Chilliwack. What a mistake that was. We were seated in the bar which is fine, bar person took our drink order and it went downhill from there. Husband and dad order the all you can eat ribs. I had the mash up (which was just ok). Mine and my husbands order came but not dads. Waitress comes over and say she will go see what is happening. Waiter comes out with one plate for the table beside us (there were 2 people) and plops it down and walks away. Women is looking as it's not exactly what she ordered but it was what dad had ordered. He then comes back with 2 meals for that table. She already has hers and he takes the new one away. Waited another 10 minutes still no meal, waitress comes again, complains about the kitchen to us (which is very unprofessional and at this point I don't care) then goes back to kitchen. Finally get dads dinner. They order some more ribs and we wait and wait again. Waitress comes back complains about the kitchen staff again. Ribs come out but they go to the wrong table again. Waitress comes and says they just brought them out did you not get them? My husband had fries with his meal which he said were the worst he has ever had. It was my birthday and they did bring a cookie with ice cream, which honestly was the best part of the entire meal and she comped one of my drinks. We were there for almost 2 hours. We were so disappointed in service and the quality of the food that we will never return and certainly will never recommend. Served over garlic mashed potatoes, a side of fresh veggies, cornbread, and topped with a country-style gravy... = One breaded chicken strip over instant mashed potatoes and instant gravy. Their: Smoky Bacon Mac N' CheeseSpiral pasta in a cheesy bacon and white wine sauce, baked in a skillet until golden brown and crispy. Garnished with bacon and served with our freshly baked cornbread.... = Spiral pasta that it is way undercooked and hard with some cheese and rawish bacon. But it did include a piece of COLD corn bread. Food was not flavorful and the wait staff needs a lot of help. Will never go back!!! read more

My coworker and I went to Montana's for lunch today and upon entering were put off by the attitude of the front of the house hostess. She was kinda rude to an elderly couple who were meeting up with a party for lunch and the place was half empty and wouldn't let them sit at a table. Our server and food was very good and was the best thing about our visit today. We have never had any issues previously but after today will be taking a break from Montana's for a while. read more

A nice restaurant at Tillicum Mall. Due to the rural setting in north Saanich where this restaurant is located it provides you with a countryside feel. I really enjoyed their Caesar salad as well as their steak and fries. The staff were very down to Earth and friendly. If I could give 0 stars I would. There was a mistake with our food, and our waitress was really quick to notice and solve it for us. I want to make it clear Amanda is an awesome server and the service was great. I am NOT impressed however with management. He was very rude and sarcastic when he spoke to us. He kept telling us "oh so there is no problem then" while trying to air out our complaints. Me and the wife will NOT be back and the poor server needs to get out of there. A group of us went here for snacks and happy hour. We ordered several appetizers and share them. The shrimp were really good and certainly addictive, you kept wanting more. We also ordered wings, cheese bread, and calamari. The hot wings are some of the best I have had in a while and certainly in Victoria. Yes, Montana's is a chain and I have been to them before but this was the first time I had there wings and they were top notch. Extra crispy with a really good flavored sauce! We also tried both of their sangria type drinks which I would recommend, they were fruity, fresh and couldn't taste the alcohol making them very dangerous indeed! read more

Wow. The service was mediocre to begin the night. It took us 15 minutes before our waitress first approached our table. On top of that after ordering, tonight we were served a PLASTIC BAG in one of our bbq platters. It was a food prep bag that held the brisket with a STICKER on it that stated the day of the week. I was apauled and appriached the kitchen only to have kitchen staff say "oh we can fix that for you"...Like what???? REALLY? Not only did the kitchen staff try to hide this from the shift manager and rectify it without making note of it, but when the shift manager did come out he brought the food back and offered to remake it or remove it from the bill but charge me for the other meal (which was not going to be eatten as it would of been extreamly rude to eat infeont of somone whos meal was served improperly) and the 2 sips of a beer that were taken. We HIGHLY RECOMEND AVIIDING THIS ESTABLISHMENT AT ALL COSTS. for the average $100 dinner bill for two the customer service and quality and pride of craft are all minimal. read more

One of our go to places when out in the Tillicum/Uptown area of Victoria. It's a pleasant family restaurant with an extensive menu in which you can't go wrong with most of it. The Bison Burger is one of my favourite burgers however their ribs, nachos & kid's menus are great too. If you go on a BDay, the staff will sing for you and you get a free treat. I went into Montana's to get a bite to eat and discuss a paper with some partners, and I was surprisingly pleased with the quality of the food. I played things safe and got the chicken tacos and a blue buck, with some fries on the side. I was debating between the chicken tacos and the Firecracker burger but ultimately decided that it was a taco kind of day. The different sauces that they have were tremendous on both the fries and the tacos, and I found that the chipotle was the best for both. The reason for 3 stars comes down to the service. Our server wasn't the worst I've ever had, but she barely gave us the time of day and the kitchen took quite a while to come up with the food, despite the restaurant being almost dead. Overall, I'd visit again if I was in the area, but it wasn't my all-time favourite spot. read more

Never do an online delivery. Three times now they have only given half my order. The managers keep saying they will "fix it" but clearly have not. Seriously, how hard is it to ensure the ticket matches the order? This third time, it turns out they put the other half of my order with someone named Rachel. Who hires these guys? I question if anyone there knows the difference between a bus driver and a screwdriver. Abysmal Service and Average Food Have visited the lounge many times over the past couple years for a quick drink or two prior to watching my kid's hockey games. The service has always been consistently abysmal, varied only by attitudes of contempt, avoidance, ignorance and just plain laziness. Drinks are average at best. I recently visited for dinner with my family and in-laws on a Sunday evening at around 7 pm. On arrival we were told there would be a 20 minute wait despite the fact that the establishment was only about 2/3s of capacity. After waiting the 15 to 20 minutes, we were seated next to a roaring fireplace in the middle of the room despite many available booths. Describing our waitress as thoroughly clueless and incompetent would be a gross understatement. She took about 15 minutes to take our orders after seating and taking orders from a couple that was seated next to us that arrived at least 5 minutes after we did. She spent several minutes chit chatting with them while we waited. After eventually taking our orders, she advised me that I should be prepared to wait sometime for the 22 ounce draft beer that I ordered as they only had 3 or 4 of that size of glass and they were all currently in use. Alternatively, I could order the smaller 18 ounce size instead and receive it quicker. Alas, I chose the latter which arrived about 10 minutes later. Time continued to pass ... our neighbours who arrived at least 5 minutes after we did, received their food about half hour from time we had arrived. After another 15 minutes or so, our orders finally arrived. The food was tepid from likely sitting on the pick up counter for sometime. Somewhat surprisingly, my 10 ounce sirloin steak with Cajun onions, garlic mashed potatoes and a thimble sized sample of beans was quite tasty, though the steak was a little tough. About 10 minutes after receiving our orders from other servers, the waitress came by to ask how everything was. A couple of people in our group requested vinegar for their fries and a steak knife for her steak. After 15 minutes of not receiving either, we resorted to flagging down another server who immediately obtained and delivered the requested items. Funny enough, our waitress came by with the requested items after another 5 to 10 minutes, which were no longer required. After finishing our dinners over an hour after arriving, we sought our bill. Not surprisingly, the waitress was nowhere to be found. Accordingly, we again flagged down another server to obtain it for us. After receiving it at the front door, our waitress finally noticed we were paying and hurried up front to hover over the credit card machine whilst we paid seemingly trying to influence us to leave a generous tip for her abject failure to provide anything approaching acceptable service. We were not amused. Save yourself from the train wreck that is Montana's and go somewhere else to eat. Preferably an establishment that appreciates their clientele and treats them with respect and an acceptable level of service. You have been warned! The only reason I did not rate it as only one star is because the food itself was decent and value for the meal was good at about $23 plus tax and tip, not including beer. read more

I had lunch here with my youngest last week and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I went expecting the usual chain restaurant food service meal and instead I had a decent meal. While it isn't somewhere to go when you want locally sourced, ethically raised food, as somewhere to take the children to eat and not get complete dreck I can can whole heartedly recommend it. First of all it is a very kid friendly place. Which goes a long way with me these days. If I am able to eat somewhere without having to worry about my children speaking at a level above a whisper I am there. What also impressed me were the sides that come with the kid's meals. My son ordered fries with his lunch, which also came with sliced up carrots. You get the sense that they are really trying to offer a more balanced option than you'd get in most kid friendly restaurants. The fact that we were given not only a page to colour and do games on, but had a big sheet of brown paper on the table that he could draw on made my son extremely happy. He was also entranced by the old truck mounted in the rafters and the cardboard canoe that his lunch came in. I had the reuben sandwich which was great (lots of meat, a good balance of sauerkraut, and the bread was toasted just right). What also stood out was that the fries were crisp and freshly made. I have had a run of mediocre fries recently when eating out and this was a pleasant discovery. I am planning on bringing my whole family back there for dinner this week. read more

3 stars in the restaurant franchise/chain category = above-average food choices and quality for a chain . . . . The veggie burger ($12.99) is actually better than I anticipated. A bear-paw formed thick veggie patty that tasted BBQ grilled, topped with mushrooms, feta (should have been more than a teaspoonful), and fried onion and peppers, on a fresh sesame seed bun. Firm, filling patty, not dry. The fries were fresh crisp, with seasoning salt. Ask for their house BBQ sauce and they bring the bottle to your table for your burger or fries. Pop/soda is $2.99 with free refills. The menu is huge and long, making it hard to decide on a meal. I also ate at Montana's in Brampton, Ontario in November and July - same menu - and enjoyed their pulled pork, and back ribs, respectively. For a franchise I'd go back if there are no other nearby local options, as is the case in Brampton. In Victoria, there are better locally owned BBQ joints that I'd recommend if you don't mind driving downtown. If you are stuck around the Tillicum area, Montana's is OK. read more

we went out to see a movie last night and thought Montanas would be a great middle of the road kind of dinner before the movie but all 6 of us had food issues. we all had cold food. 2 friends asked for their meal to be reheated but us 4 just sucked it up. subsequently four people ate at one time and then 15 minutes later two other people ate when the reheated food returned. I bought a double drink because it was Saturday night why not but I swear it didn't have any vodka in the drink. I had two other friends take a sip and they also agreed with me so when I told the waitress about it she just said I hear you. What's that supposed to mean anyway it was still on the bill and I didn't get the extra drink. Anyway lesson learned never eat there again and we are pretty easy to please and really thought that it was going to be at least HALF Decent. 1 star for really nice atmosphere! This was literally the worst service I have ever received at a restaurant. I came with a group of 10 men and they seated us at a table for six (!) and we are all over 6 ft and 200 lbs (hockey team). They then took 30 minutes to bring us our first water/pop/beer and literally 45 minutes after that to bring our chicken wings. We asked for our bill, and still 30 minutes later there was nobody there for us to pay. This was at 6pm on a Saturday! Absolutely shocking. We all will never ever be back again. I cannot emphasize how dissatisfying this experience was. Food was average, service was appalling - don't waste your time. The mall food court would be much better value. I got the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw. The bottom bun was soggy and the top was hard. There was barely any coleslaw. Fries were like cardboard. Used to like this place, I really did. Turns out SOMEthing has got a foul in the state of Montana as the only edible thing on their menu is the chicken. Their BBQ sauce's FIRST ingredient is high fructose corn syrup! The very first thing! After that, My wife ordered steamed mixed veggies and got a big uncut chunk of broccoli. The beans tasted straight out of a can, service was long even for a father's day, and they forgot parts of our order! However, the chicken was quite nice. Why such a low rating? Read on. A very special birthday party including a total of 10 people, a birthday cake delivered to the restaurant with all the "fixings" with a request as to how the cake was to be delivered to the table. The restaurant claimed that the night chosen for the celebration was "their busiest weekly night" and sitting together would be "a problem". After several phone calls and restaurant meetings with staff, the seating was finalized and cake presentation was agreed to. The guests arrived and were seated together. The server did a good job with drink and food orders and delivery. The ordered food dishes were subpar in that almost every dish was "overcooked". But then came the "final straw". Even though there were assurances made by the restaurant staff that the "cake delivery" would be handle discreetly but with candles lit - what happened....the cake was brought to the table still in the delivery box. No candles, no plates or silverware - just a "boxed" bday cake placed in the middle of the table. Fortunately; 8 of the guests made light of the situation, unfortunately the "birthday lady and her partner were extremely disappointed". The situation was eventually rectified but what was to be a joyous and special occasion turned out to be nothing more than a poor dinner and bad restaurant jokes. Thank you Montana's. read more

Service was a little slow today, however it is Valentines Day so it is to be expected. Staff were still upbeat, but looked a little beat up from the busy evening. The wife decided to go to Montana's for the legendary Cobb Salad that they were known for (or at least the ones she remembers having a few year back), opting for something a little healthier after her workout today. What a disappointment. $15 for 10 cents worth of greens and a really dry piece of what appeared to be chicken. Not sure if the tiny sand size meat was actually bacon bits or leftovers from the previous meal. Where was the corn? Ham? real bacon for bacon bits? corn bread? I'm sorry it's come to the point where you have to sacrifice quality for profit in a Salad. We've had better $5.99 pre-made grocery store salads. Truly Sad. read more
