Very nice establishment which you would never think of because it's in the middle of a strip mall. Food and beverages were outstanding across the board...filet, seafood, etc. You can get toppings on a filet such as blue cheese, etc. However, some people like to try 2 toppings on a steak but they charge you for 2 toppings around $5 each so $10 total. This is unfair because each topping only covers half the filet. Prices are on the higher side but quality is excellent. Would five this place 5 stars in the future if they take down some of their prices and not double charge for toppings. Place is on the darker side in terms of lighting. read more

I will start by saying that Montarra served me the best steak I have ever had. We received a gift card from a friend who was raving about this place and frequents it for special occasions. We finally got around to using it to celebrate my husbands birthday. We made a reservation, got dressed up and had a wonderful celebratory dining experience. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive, and helped us pick a good bottle of wine for our meal. We started with two French onion soups and the seared spring lamp lollipops. They French onion soup is served in a hollowed out onion with a gravy boat of extra soup on the side. I appreciated the unique presentation, but I found it hard to eat and too salty for my preference. The lamb lollipops however were cooked perfectly and were delicious. For my main I went with the 6 oz. Black Angus, filet mignon and it was the best steak I have ever tasted. It was melt in your mouth perfection. I am already planning our return visit for when my birthday rolls around this year. read more

We have been coming to Monterra's since they first opened. Since we moved away a few years ago, we always make it a point to come back here for at least one to two dinners per visit. It is our favorite restaurant in the area. The service , food and ambience have always been excellent. Went to Montarra for the first time a few months ago, the experience was excellent and it is now our go to for a great culinary experience in the northwest burbs. Everything my fiancé and I have had here has been very good to excellent. Wish yelp allowed half stars as I would give it 4 1/2.. Having traveled and eaten all over the world I am discerning and 5 Stars doesn't fit in the scope of restaurant excellence. Nonetheless, I only mention that as a means to temper my review for those who are weary of yelp reviewers who throw 5 stars at Taco Bell. This restaurant is a gem and one in which we will keep returning. Filet mignon crisp appetizer is delicious and steaks are great. For a real treat try the seared ahi tuna entree which has avocado and pineapple. Desserts are top notch as well. Food is polished off with a great wine list and coffee, espresso, cappuccino. My only complaint is the amount of people who frequent this restaurant in shorts and t-shirts. Please people, this is not a tuxedo dress code, but is a collared shirt too much to ask? This is our go to spot when we want a fancy meal in the burb. We always start off with the french onion soup. Just like everyone else says, its delicious and one of the best I've ever had. It's not salty or extra watery. My go to meal here is the mac n cheese. I love mac n cheese and have tried it at many places. This is one of my favorite. The cheese is creamy and smothering the pasta. The pasta is cooked perfectly. It's not mushy or overly salted. My husband usually gets the rack of lamb with duck confit. It's an unusually combination but it works for him. Last time we went they had a lobster tail special. The lobster was buttery and soft. It came with mashed potatoes and asparagus. If you want a good steakhouse meal in the burb come here. read more

Living in the NW suburbs of Illinois has its fair share of really good restaurants. Montarra is one of the best if not the best restaurants around this area for a fine dining experience. We joined my parents to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and wife's birthday. This was the first thing they mentioned to us when we arrived congratulating us. The restaurant always has great ambiance and the food is fantastic! We enjoyed some appetizers- always get the spicy ahi tuna tartare when we go! I enjoyed the apple pie old fashioned with Woodford Reserve bourbon- delicious. The main courses we enjoyed were served timely and every bite was delicious! I enjoyed the 9 oz Black Angus "Churrasco Style" skirt steak that was cooked to perfection. My wife loved the Shrimp and Sea Scallops DeJonghe and my parents split the Red Wine Braised Short Ribs which the portioned perfectly on two separate plates. My dad and I enjoyed a glass of Ken Wright Pinot Noir which was a fantastic wine that went well with my steak. For desert we had the sticky pudding which in my opinion was one of the highlights not to mention they hand written Happy Anniversary and Happy Birthday on the desert plate which was a thoughtful touch. Montarra is expensive but so well worth the experience for a great meal and wonderful way to celebrate special occasions! read more

Ok. This is a difficult one as we had a drastically different experience on two sides of the same table. I had the lamb lollipops and a ribeye while my companion had a foie gras special appetizer and a filet mignon main course. My companion said everything was well cooked except for the odd choice of bacon with foie gras. Not a deal breaker, really, as the presentation was done well and the bacon could be set aside for people who did not like it. Then came the dumpster fire on my side of the table. The lollipops were greasy and poorly trimmed with an odd fishy aftertaste. I decided to let that one go and waited for my steak. First rule of steak is that if you can't cook a ribeye consistently, don't put it on the menu. While I ordered my steak rare, the end result varied from rare, to medium, to burnt depending on where I cut it. The Gorgonzola topping was well melted in parts and outright incinerated in others. Overall, the stake was a steaming dumpster fire of failure to execute. The depressing part was that I could tell it started life as a good cut. The one redeeming part of the experience was that my server did a great job taking care of our table and was happy to take the travesty masquerading as a stake off of my bill. (Not really a huge deal as I spent as much on wine as on food. Great wine list BTW) Overall, this is not our first time at this place and we will come back for a tie breaker. read more

The French onion soup was delicious, some of the best I've had. As others have mentioned, the presentation is unique, served inside a hollowed-out onion, with extra soup on the side. I also had the shrimp and scallops dejonghe, which were cooked perfectly with a side of spinach. My wife had New York strip, which was cooked to her liking as well. We both had baked potatoes on the side, mine loaded, one tiny gripe was the potatoes were a tad hard; I'd probably opt for the whipped potatoes next time. Drinks were excellent, the on staff mixologist knows their stuff. Ambiance is slightly dark and romantic, with white table linens and votive candlelight. Our server was very nice and accommodating. All in all, a great find in the burbs without having to travel downtown for similar fare. We skipped dessert, although the turtle cheesecake sounded awesome read more
