Mountain of praise for Montarra The experience was very pleasant. This was our second time here and, to be honest, we only returned because we had a gift certificate. But we were pleasantly surprised and delighted. Service: Excellent. Both wait staff and hostess team seemed very engaged, from when I made the reservation to when we stepped into the restaurant and even when we left. Our waitperson was efficient, polite, and knowledgable. Food: was really outstanding (we had bouillabaisse and a special risotto dish with scallops). The menu was varied and interesting - I often gauge a restaurant by looking at the menu and having a difficult time making a selection because many items looked good. I liked that they had a quality menu with several selections that seemed creative. The quantity of items was also just right. Not too many, not too few. Other: When they took my reservation, they asked if it was a special occasion. I said it was for my husband's birthday. They asked his name - I didn't really know why but told them. When we were seated, I realized why. They had printed a special version of the menu with a happy birthday note to my husband. It was a very inexpensive, clever, and simple, yet meaningful step. Montarra is an elegant upscale restaurant so we're not getting here super often. They've got an outstanding wine, whiskey and cocktail list too. We started with their Petite Filet Mignon Crisps, an excellent appetizer. Dinner was Duet of Beef Tenderloin Tips & Bacon Wrapped Jumbo Scallops and the Caramelized Jumbo Maine Sea Scallops. All of the food was cooked perfectly, well-presented and tasted great. The table service here was above average. Reservations recommended and you'll need about $250 for two. read more

The ribeye was tough and didn't have a lot of fat/tenderness. The asparagus was great. The French onion soup was good too. I didn't complain about the ribeye to give them a chance to correct it. The creamed spinach and mashed potatoes were good. The service was slightly above average. I'm giving them three stars because of the steak. $68 for a ribeye should be a premium, delicious, tender and fatty ribeye. I would try something else on the menu here (if I ever come back).. which is not likely since I don't live here (and there's so many other better options). Oh, and I forgot to mention that I asked for the demiglaze for the steak on the side and they ended up putting it on top of the steak (and adding an additional side portion of it). I lowered my review from three stars to two because it's just not acceptable to serve such a tough steak for such a price. Fabulous hidden gem on Randall Rd. It's been several years since we have eaten here. We still love this for the food, atmosphere, and service. Today we returned for our anniversary. Jennifer (Jen K.) is the best server. She knows when to ask questions and when to walk away. She is happy, shows pride in this restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and she was thrilled. Covid-19: All indoor seating is every other table; outdoor seating is very well spaced for social distancing. We had reservations for 5:30 pm. We arrived and were promptly seated. They made personalized menus just for us. What a special touch. We felt very special by the attention to details. We shared a Wedge Salad which they plated for each of us. Hubby ordered the 10oz Filet Mignon with burgundy mushrooms, Boursin mashed potatoes. He loved every bite. I ordered the 9oz Wagyu Beef with roasted rainbow carrots. Every bite was a treat. Ended with a flourless chocolate cake. Best I've ever had. It was almost like fudge. We thoroughly enjoyed our anniversary dinner and hope to come back. read more

A lot of positives with a few not great things. When you're paying what you pay to eat a nice meal at this type of restaurant, there's a few minor things you expect and that's where they missed for us. On the plus side: Great drinks, great ambiance, food was delicious and the servers were very friendly! Deltas: We had a super small table that was pushed against a large curtain which draped onto us and our table. We were celebrating both our birthdays and although we watched them deliver a slice of birthday cake to other tables, they only offered us a dessert menu... Lastly, the wait from our soup to when we received our entree was nearly 30 minutes and then I flagged for our bill and our waitress saw and didn't come over for another 10-15 minutes and brought the dessert menu and not our bill. I'm not sure if they saw two younger diners and figured they could focus their efforts on the larger parties or what it was. We've dined there before and had better experiences but they really fell short last night. Again, good food but when you're paying a certain amount for a quality meal you're going to want to go somewhere with consistent service and that's probably not Monterra. read more

It has been a long number of years since I ate here. This place is close and we loved it but they stopped their Mother's Day brunch and we really loved those events! We came for our 23 anniversary and loved it. We had already enjoyed a nice Merlot earlier in the day so my wife got a martini while I got the Belvenie 14 year Caribbean Scotch; we loved our drinks. I had ordered a double Scotch on the rocks, thinking the pour would be smallish, but their pour was quite nice and my glass was to the rim with delicious Scotch. We started off with a wedge and it was great; they even split it for us. My wife got the Wagyu Hangar Steak while I got a 10 oz filet done Montarra style. The steak was done perfectly and we loved our meals. We ended the night with a dessert that we split and it was also great. My husband & I had been to Montarra once or twice before we decided to get married and it was always delicious. We had our wedding at the courthouse then we (my husband and myself, our son and daughter plus my parents who traveled to Illinois from southern Louisiana) went to Montarra for our wedding lunch. We walked in, ready to eat but when we arrived, there was a long banquet table in the center of the restaurant (which was on a riser & quite lovely). The banquet table was decorated lavishly, all menus had my & my husband's name across the first page of the menu... Montarra went above & beyond to make my family's day absolutely amazing. My dad announced we could order anything that looked remotely delicious & it was ALL delicious. We had so much amazing food, the staff was incredible & my dad bought dessert for the entire restaurant. Best. Day. Ever! My wife and I ate at Montarras in early November. The service was good. My wife's vegan dinner also was good-maybe not as good as our previous visit. My ribeye was fatty and for some reason had a brown gravy on it. Not the quality that I expect or have had at other area restaurants. It was listed at $68 on the menu but we were charged $71. That may be because I substituted asparagus for the included broccoli. I couldn't tell from the bill. We'll probably not go back for a while. read more

Great shareable plates with the option of outdoor tent or indoor dining. We opted for the lamb chops-tender and flavorful. Also enjoyed the bacon wrapped dates, wedge salad, bulgogi beef eggrolls. The have a decent cocktail menu. Their Savannah Peach was a great summer refresher. I do think they need to elevate their cocktails by offer single cube ice for their whiskey/Old Fashions/Manhattans. I could sit here and write endlessly about how incredible this place is but I will (try to) keep it short and sweet. The food is absolutely phenomenal, with specials being changed to follow seasonal approaches; From their small plates, to salads, to entrees and dessert. I don't think I've ever tasted one thing that I couldn't agree with if I tried. Their cocktail menu is exceptional along with their choices of wines to fit that certain dining budget, all the way to the impressive Birthday or Anniversary splurges. The staff there is *beyond* friendly and extremely knowledgeable with everything they offer. I'd also like to add that if you want to personalize said Anniversary or Birthday Dinner, feel free to call in advance for that specific shout-out on the menu. It's a nice touch and they're always sure to personalize the dessert you order or congratulate you on the milestone you're there to celebrate for. This place is great for any occasion and I would (and do) recommend it to literally everyone. Be sure to look at the ceiling with their hand blown glass chandeliers hanging from above and obviously that waterfall to add to the overall experience as well. 10 out of 10 every time and special shoutout to Ben, Amy and Andrea. The chef, Josh really knows his way around a block of tofu. Last night I was in the area with my husband and we had heard good things about this restaurant but with it being a steakhouse and my being a vegan, I have never bothered to check it out. I'm glad I did because my vegan dish was incredibly delicious. There's no description of the dish, it's just chef's choice. I'm always down for that. The chef served a generous portion of a beautifully pan seared tofu, about half a block, that had a nice crust and sort of a sweet-and-sour thing going on over a delicious bed of finally diced crispy cooked vegetable medley that had beans, carrots, asparagus, mushrooms, and two or three other veggies that I couldn't make out because of the fine dice. Taking up about a third of the dish was an expertly steamed side of broccoli that had a delicious savory sauce or broth. Every component of this dish was bursting with flavor. The best part was that finally there was enough food. Unless it's a predominantly veggie restaurant chefs don't realize that vegans need larger portions due to lack of animal protein. A cute side of broccoli or thimble full of rice is nothing for me. Josh really piled the veggies on, and every bite was loaded with flavor. I was so surprised to find that I couldn't finish all of my food, but my only Vegan at home husband had no problem polishing it off and he loved it! He had the halibut and really enjoyed it as well. The location in a strip mall seemed a little out of place for such a high class place. Don't let the location discourage you. Ordered the bacon wrapped dates appetizer and filets done Montarra style. The bacon wrapped dates were phenomenal. Perfectly crisp bacon combined with sweet and tasty dates make this appetizer a must do. We would come back just for this appetizer! The filet came with garlic mashed potatoes, spinach, and diced tomatoes. The filet was wonderfully tender and delicious. The spinach was cooked perfectly and the tomatoes were well seasoned, a little reminiscent of what you'd find on bruschetta. Our server was very attentive and helpful. We also ordered a couple of their specialty cocktails which were fantastic. While this was a fairly expensive meal, it was outstanding and we will be back again. read more

This hidden gem is such a cute spot if you're looking to splurge a little! The set up is really cute and there's both an inside and semi-outside option that's covered by a tent. For food, I had the bouillabaisse dish and it was AMAZING. It was perfectly portioned, very flavorful and overall just really good. I also had part of a wedge salad and that was really good as well. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting the area and if someone needs a good "date night" spot. The ambiance is great, the service was good and the interior was very elegant. The atmosphere was too dark I could barely read the menu. Our steaks both had too much chewy fat on it. A filet should not have chewy fat on it. It didn't have much flavor either. Everything was very good. I was told if we let them know of an anniversary or birthday they'd go above and beyond, however, we didn't experience anything different so not sure why that's advertised. Food was delicious, drinks were great, atmosphere was typical for that kind of place, and service was for the most part pretty good - until it took 20 minutes for the server to come back to see what we wanted for dessert, so by the time she came back we decided against it since we were just ready to leave. Happy to return! This is our go-to favorite place to stop when we are part-way home from family business in St. Charles or beyond. Because of the pandemic it had been well over a year and it felt so good to be back. Ben is always welcoming and informative about the latest additions to the menu. He offered an alternative (WhistlePig) to my choice of a Rye swap to the traditional Bourbon in the House Old Fashioned. It was excellent! High cost for no atmosphere! No table cloths, crowed seating. The food is ok, not the greatest.

Context: We went here for a special occasion and the bill for 4 was $250. Pros: the drinks were delicious and made to perfection. The food was good and served in a timely manner, the wait staff was pleasant. Cons: We all ordered the soup of the day and it was only mildly warm. If this was a $40 dollar meal that would be one thing but it was $250 so I expect better. The response was "I'll tell the kitchen". As you should, however I would expect that more would have happened..... for instance the manager could have come by and offered free desert as compensation. Something to offset the poor soup experience in the guests mind would have gone a long way. At this level of a dining experience one expects and should deserve better. read more

They badly over-cooked a ribeye steak (ordered medium rare, served medium well), so one of us had to wait another 15 minutes for a new steak, while the rest of us ate our entrees. The food was good, but it's priced like they are in Chicago, not the far NW burbs. It's very easy to spend over $100 per person.
