Revamped menu was quite good! Service was impeccable. Went with the seafood tower which was generous, the seafood trio appetizer as a main was great. The sea bass special was a bit too heavy with polenta and could have been a bit lighter/more delicate. French onion filet mignon, broth was too salty and my son left the chunk of bread behind. Crab cake always a hit. Kids menu is very hearty even if the fish and chips was fried dark! Lobster on the seafood tower tasted amazing but would have like a little melted butter to go with it. There's soo many seafood places in Pittsburgh it was overwhelming, we chose this place because of the 2 views it offers -overlooking the city (including Steelers Stadium) and the romantic sunset of the river. The restaurant sits on a hill, and a solitary elevator brings you right to the entrance. The menu offers a solid mix of seafood and steaks. We ordered the seafood tower to start; the oysters were great, though the lobsters were a bit dry. For our mains, the Halibut was juicy and cooked to perfection might need just a tad more seasoning, but the Chilean sea bass stole the show--perfectly flaky with an incredible cream sauce. Outstanding ambience there are two levels you can dine at the bar level, which is lounging or at the top dining level, which is a little fancier. I decided to order the Chilean Seabass which was served with a creamy sauce, onions, squash, and asparagus. It's pretty good. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting cause it mentioned me so so I'm not used to miso being a creamy sauce however I did also add one crabcake cause they are known for their crabcakes and it was pretty good. We came in with a large group to celebrate a very special birthday. With a party of this size, we completely understand that there may be a few hiccups, and overall, everyone in our group was very respectful, patient, and understanding. Unfortunately, the experience was overshadowed by KEVIN'S ATTITUDE. KEVIN came across as extremely rude, dismissive, and arrogant throughout the celebration. We understand that serving a large party can be challenging, but there is still an expectation of professionalism and basic courtesy, especially when guests are there to celebrate an important occasion. Despite the few issues with the service, our group remained respectful and tried to be understanding. It was disappointing that the same level of courtesy was not extended to us. A special birthday celebration should be a positive and memorable experience, and unfortunately, the interaction with our server took away from what should have been a wonderful occasion. I hope management takes this feedback seriously, because the restaurant has an opportunity to provide a much better experience for large parties in the future. My husband and I went here for valentine's day. It was very good but definitely very expensive so not sure when we will return. The views were great and I like how they staggered the seating so almost every table had a good view even if you weren't directly next to a window (which we weren't). The standout dish was the lobster tail that was part of my husband's "best of all worlds" meal (or something like that) and also the crab cakes. I got the scallops and butternut squash risotto and while the risotto was delicious, I felt the scallops were a bit underseasoned and underwhelming. The angel food grilled cheese dessert was certainly very unique but not really my type of dessert. Our resy was at 645 and we stopped for a drink in the lounge to catch the sunset before. I highly recommend going on a Friday night and grabbing a drink in the lounge first. They usually have live music, and it's such a fun, elevated way to start the evening. My favorite cocktail was the Orange I'm Glad I'm Gin! It was refreshing, bright, and perfectly balanced. For shareables, you have to order the brussels sprouts. I always say when a restaurant can make brussels sprouts taste incredible, that's saying something...and these absolutely deliver. I've also heard amazing things about their French onion filet if you're in the mood for steak. My husband ordered the New York strip and loved it (and yes, I happily helped myself to his fries). But my personal favorite? The Fettuccine Aragosta. So rich, flavorful, and perfectly done, every bite was amazing. If you're celebrating something special, call ahead or leave a note in your OpenTable reservation requesting a window seat. The view truly elevates the entire experience. Hands down one of the best restaurants in Pittsburgh for beautiful views paired with exceptional service. Every time we visit, the staff goes above and beyond before, during, and after the meal. Incredible location with amazing views of downtown at night. Before all else, our service was impeccable. Kevin was our waiter. His knowledge of the menu and non menu items made our decisions easy. His positive attitude, attention to detail and smile, enhanced the dining experience immensely! And yes the food was great, from taste to presentation. I had the bluenose bass with mushroom risotto while my wife had a crab cake and scallops. Both were well prepared and had great flavors and generous in portion so much so we were not going to have desert. Once again, another 5 star review! Monterey Bay is by far my favorite upscale seafood restaurant in Pittsburgh. From the attentive and knowledgeable staff, to the stunning 360° view of the city, to the unparalleled dishes, everything is always beyond perfect. Our party of nine, including a one year old, dined during Pittsburgh Restaurant Week and were welcomed as soon as we stepped out of the elevator. The hostesses greeted us and asked if we wanted to check our coats. We were then taken to the top section of the restaurant. Note that if you have someone with a mobility impairment, be sure to mention that when making the reservation. Once we were seated, our fantastic server came right over. We ordered drinks, shortly followed by appetizers. A must for our family is the calamari! For dinner, we ordered everything from chicken, to pasta, to steak. Each perfectly prepared in their own way. Dessert, in my opinion, is always the best part. The crème brûlée and chocolate mousse at Monterey Bay are two of my favorites in the city. We had a private event yesterday night and had one of the private rooms downstairs. The lighting was fantastic and the staff was nice and attentive. The food was delicious as always, especially the crab cakes! The side we got were decent if a little boring but at least the green beans had some flavor to them. My wife and I went here for restaurant week. We had reservations for over a month. When we arrived, they took us to a beautiful window seat overlooking the city, but there were people already seated there. So, we had to go back to the front to find a new seat. The new seat was in a corner, nowhere near a window. We were so disappointed. I ordered the wedding soup and NY strip steak. The soup was tasty. My steak had to be sent back twice. It was so undercooked I think I heard it moo. The Mgr on duty was so sorry and did take that off the bill. I didn't even ask for it but I was grateful. For dessert I had the angel food. It was nice. If you're in the Pittsburgh area, this is the restaurant to visit. From the moment we arrived, everything from the food to the drinks to the ambiance was excellent. It's a fine dining experience without feeling stuffy, and the views overlooking the city are simply stunning -- a perfect spot for a special night out. I would have rated it a full 5 stars, but the steak appetizer missed the mark for me. It came with a very generous portion of steak -- perhaps too generous -- and it was on the chewy side, which ended up being too filling before our entrées even arrived. For my entrée, I had the thinly pounded pork chop Milanese. Visually, it was impressive (you can tell from the pictures -- it was huge!). However, only one corner had the arugula and salad topping, which was unfortunate since the chop itself was a bit dry and really benefited from that flavor contrast. A more even distribution would've made a big difference. That said, I'm already looking forward to my next visit. The overall experience was fantastic, and I highly recommend Monterey Bay Fish Grotto to anyone in the area -- especially if you're looking to impress guests or celebrate something special. read more

Ima go with "meh". The crab cake was really good, and Brussel sprouts were the star of the dinner. The Caesar was dry (had to ask for extra dressing after it came) and the dressing was just ok. Got a filet and it was below average, cooked correctly but a bit tough without a lot of flavor. I know it's a fish place but they should be able to do a decent steak. Very impressed! We visited for my mother-in-law's 70th birthday. This is the first time we've taken her to dinner and she has not complained about the food. The home made sourdough bread was a nice change from traditional bread or rolls. The calamari was the best I've had in the USA. Only bested by the calamari I've had in Greece. The lemon garlic aioli it came with may be my new favorite condiment. I would have purchased it by the bottle had that been an option. The trio appetizer with the blackened shrimp, ichiban skewers, and crab cakes had such a nice variety of flavors. We tried a bit of everything. Crabcakes were all crab and very little filler. The scallops were cook perfectly and full of flavor. The lobster tails were large and juicy. The shrimp huge. The swordfish full of flavor! It was breaded and pan fried then topped with the lemon aioli and a mango salsa. The only items we ordered that did not come out absolutely perfect were the salads which were soggy and lacked dressing. The server was very knowledgeable and able to answer all of our questions regarding both food and drink. He did not miss a beat. The view of the city was phenomenal. This is my second favorite seafood restaurant in the greater Pittsburgh area. I came here when I was pregnant, and I have a really good recollection of the calamari and the lobster arancini. I love a good calamari and this one stood out because it tasted so fresh. For the arancini, I loved that I could taste the lobster with the Parmesan, it just really gave it a nice accompaniment. My husband had the she-crab bisque and he really enjoyed it. I had the scallops and they were done to perfection. Very fresh. My husband had a steak and then was kicking himself because he felt like he should've chosen seafood. His steak was underwhelming. The service was excellent, and we really liked our server. The table split the appetizer special which was a crab cake, skewers with tuna, swordfish and salmon and two shrimp.
