My husband and I went here for valentine's day. It was very good but definitely very expensive so not sure when we will return. The views were great and I like how they staggered the seating so almost every table had a good view even if you weren't directly next to a window (which we weren't). The standout dish was the lobster tail that was part of my husband's "best of all worlds" meal (or something like that) and also the crab cakes. I got the scallops and butternut squash risotto and while the risotto was delicious, I felt the scallops were a bit underseasoned and underwhelming. The angel food grilled cheese dessert was certainly very unique but not really my type of dessert. Our waiter was great- very honest about what to order and what not to, but he stopped coming around near the end of our meal which dragged it out longer than we would have liked.

This restaurant and the Curry Chilean Sea Bass will live in my heart forever. This location is just peak, no pun intended. With an out of this world view, stellar food and service catered to your pace; nothing can go wrong. I will visit this joint ritualistically. There is not a negative thing to say from the service to the food to the dessert and location. You HAVE TO experience this place yourself. This was part of an anniversary weekend, so I kept photos to a minimum and tried to "live in the now" but oof, don't skip this place if you're in town.

Some of the best service I've ever received. Never had to wait too long. Ambiance is definitely upscale, most were in business casual or cocktail attire. Food was phenomenal. I have no words to express how amazing it all was. The dessert was out of this world. The appetizer was a seafood trio which is certainly the way to go to experience variety and flavor.

Food was good not a wow for the price. The crab bisque was good. The portion of crab was deminished compared to previous visits. The Australian lobster tail was very fresh and had a great taste. The crab cake, scallops and scrimp were good. Also had the creme brulee. The cherries and blood oranges were a nice touch. Service was exceptional. Ambiance was clean and good lighting for a 5:30pm dinner.

Once again, another 5 star review! Monterey Bay is by far my favorite upscale seafood restaurant in Pittsburgh. From the attentive and knowledgeable staff, to the stunning 360° view of the city, to the unparalleled dishes, everything is always beyond perfect. Our party of nine, including a one year old, dined during Pittsburgh Restaurant Week and were welcomed as soon as we stepped out of the elevator. The hostesses greeted us and asked if we wanted to check our coats. We were then taken to the top section of the restaurant. Note that if you have someone with a mobility impairment, be sure to mention that when making the reservation. Once we were seated, our fantastic server came right over. We ordered drinks, shortly followed by appetizers. A must for our family is the calamari! For dinner, we ordered everything from chicken, to pasta, to steak. Each perfectly prepared in their own way. Dessert, in my opinion, is always the best part. The crème brûlée and chocolate mousse at Monterey Bay are two of my favorites in the city. All in all, this is a restaurant I will continue to dine at. Each experience is somehow better than the last!

Food was good. Very elegant setting with lovely view of Pittsburgh. A bit on the expensive side. Good for a formal dinner. Service was good and efficient in formal setting.

We had to send a steak back twice. They did take it off of the bill. I was more upset that we were lead to a table with a beautiful view to find out it was given to someone else on accident. We were then sat at a 4 person table with no view. It was very disappointing. I expected better from an establishment like this. Our waiter was fantastic though. The cheesecake was really delicious. Not a fan of the chimichurri.

We had a private event yesterday night and had one of the private rooms downstairs. The lighting was fantastic and the staff was nice and attentive. The food was delicious as always, especially the crab cakes! The side we got were decent if a little boring but at least the green beans had some flavor to them. We ended with dessert and I'm sad that the portion size of the angle food cake grilled cheese decreased (it used to be twice the size) but it was good along with the other desserts we got.

My wife and I went here for restaurant week. We had reservations for over a month. When we arrived, they took us to a beautiful window seat overlooking the city, but there were people already seated there. So, we had to go back to the front to find a new seat. The new seat was in a corner, nowhere near a window. We were so disappointed. I ordered the wedding soup and NY strip steak. The soup was tasty. My steak had to be sent back twice. It was so undercooked I think I heard it moo. The Mgr on duty was so sorry and did take that off the bill. I didn't even ask for it but I was grateful. For dessert I had the angel food. It was nice. Overall, it is a nice place to go for a date, if you get a good seat. If you dont, you'll be wishing you could see out the window the entire time.

The city views never get old absolutely stunning every time. The salmon with that delicious sauce is always a favorite, and the grilled angel food cake dessert is the perfect sweet finish. Consistently amazing food and atmosphere. Definitely a place worth visiting over and over again!

Monterey Bay Fish Grotto - Pittsburgh, PA 1/2 (4.5 stars) What a treat! Monterey Bay Fish Grotto offers absolutely spectacular views paired with superb service. If you're in the Pittsburgh area, this is the restaurant to visit. From the moment we arrived, everything from the food to the drinks to the ambiance was excellent. It's a fine dining experience without feeling stuffy, and the views overlooking the city are simply stunning -- a perfect spot for a special night out. I would have rated it a full 5 stars, but the steak appetizer missed the mark for me. It came with a very generous portion of steak -- perhaps too generous -- and it was on the chewy side, which ended up being too filling before our entrées even arrived. For my entrée, I had the thinly pounded pork chop Milanese. Visually, it was impressive (you can tell from the pictures -- it was huge!). However, only one corner had the arugula and salad topping, which was unfortunate since the chop itself was a bit dry and really benefited from that flavor contrast. A more even distribution would've made a big difference. That said, I'm already looking forward to my next visit. The overall experience was fantastic, and I highly recommend Monterey Bay Fish Grotto to anyone in the area -- especially if you're looking to impress guests or celebrate something special.

Stopped by for dinner last night to celebrate mom's birthday n Father's Day. Lovely restaurant located in mount Washington on the top of a luxury apt building. Riding up the elevator wow what a view. Fancy restaurant w friendly attentive staff n great views of Pittsburgh skyline n the 3 rivers meeting up No doubt it's a pricey restaurant. We had the calamari w arrabiata sauce n Cesar salad w anchovies. Very generous portions. Tasted good. The complimentary bread n butter were good too. We got the penne vodka w shrimp ,Monterey bay best of both w crab cake shrimp n scallops n Monterey bay best of all w crab cake. Shrimp, scallops n lobster. The crab cakes tasted so good n n lobster was full of meat n good. Shrimps were quite large n scallops were good. The pasta tasted good n generous amounts of shrimp. We also got the Mexican street corn which was really good. We topped it off with angel food cake grilled cheese sandwich and mango moment. The grilled cheese sandwich desert was different n so good w berries n sauce. Enough for 3 to share. And the mango moment had mango mousse w fresh cubes of pineapple, mango boba. Was v refreshing. Thanks for a great meal. Will certainly come back for a meal again to celebrate.

Nom! Nom! Nom! What a great dinner. If I have to rank everything we ate, the fresh oysters would come in #1. So fresh and sweet and properly cleaned (no gritty taste). The fillets are a close second--great steaks. The scallops were yummy and crispy on the outside. Everything tastes good honestly. Old fashions are delish. Can't wait to return.

Ask the Community - Monterey Bay Fish Grotto

Hi wondering if it is possible to go for drinks only in the Lounge? And if so, what time would we have to arrive to get a table in the bar? Thanks!

Yes, It's first come first serve in the bar. I think it's 4:30 on weekdays and 4? on weekends

I'm taking my girlfriend here for her birthday..any suggestions for a special request? I'm just tryna to do something small to make it alil different than just another night out for her bday..Should I just bring a rose or two in a vase for our table?

Ask for the corner table overlooking the city, it has the best view. That will be more impressive than flowers.

Coming from California, what would be the best reservation time to try to get a window table, possibly catching sunset?

8:00 would probably be good. Sunset right now is roughly 8:45. It would give you time to be seated and get started on your meal.

Is MBFG open per usual with Covid restrictions?

What is the dress code like here? are they really strict with it?

Business and or business casual and you’ll fit in. Be sure to arrive early and check out the bar with views of downtown. Also, if you want good window seating, arrive early as they do not RSVP window seats.

Does this place not serve sushi anymore? I cannot find it on their website.

I believe they still had some sushi options when I went in Sept...maybe it is seasonal?

Can I order alcohol if I'm with someone who's not 21 and I'm not 25?

Yes, you should be able to!

Our server was excellent and the auxiliary staff were courteous and efficient. We started with a calamari appetizer which was a little spicy but delicious. Beware of the two Thai chilies in the mix! Next my husband had the lobster bisque. It was quite rich with a large chunk of lobster as a garnish. Our main courses were a 10 ounce filet, wild caught shrimp stuffed with crabmeat and Chilean sea bass. Everyone loved their entrees. Our son especially loved the filet, it was so tender. We ordered two side dishes for the table and they were plenty for the three of us. Decadent lobster mashed potatoes and crabmeat fried rice. We shared a dessert, creme brûlée which was topped with fresh berries and served with chewy cocoa snowflake cookies. Overall the food was excellent. Service started out a little rocky. I had made a reservation online and it would only let me choose a high top. We don't like high tops so I called the restaurant a few days before and they assured me they could accommodate us with a regular table, not to worry. Upon entering and giving my name for the reservation, the Maitre D'être said it's for a high top. I explained that I'd called and we didn't want a high top. He said he could only offer us a booth in the lounge, so we took it. The lounge had a jazz trio playing and the music was a bit too loud for comfortable conversation. The server had to talk above the music to be heard by us. Luckily they took a break and when they came back the volume was lower. As we were leaving I noticed there was a whole dining room with empty tables which were NOT high tops. So why did they seat us in the lounge? Our drink orders were pretty simple, however because they serve the cocktails from the shaker, the server mixed up the dinks and poured my husband's margarita into my 'dirty' martini glass. So I had a three blue cheese olive margarita! A margarita-tini! He realized what he did, apologized and ran off to get another margarita for my husband. I had eaten the olives and tasted the margarita, which was very good. When he returned, he asked if I still wanted the martini and I laughed and said, yes, that what I ordered. So my husband got the benefit of two Margaritas for the price of one and I got three extra blue cheese olives! That was the only goof up. The rest of the meal was flawlessly served. I felt that even though the prices are high, the portion size and the quality of the food provide a good value. You expect to pay more in a place like this. It was well worth it in my opinion. And if you are there during Happy Hour you can choose cocktails and appetizers from the Happy Hour menu which is quite reasonable.

We celebrated our 10yr anniversary here for dinner & it was definitely worth it. Unblemished ambiance & service. We were at the restaurant side- very chic & intimate. They have a casual tavern area along the bar on the other side. And an upstairs section. When you look up, there's an entire wall of huge wine selection. For cocktails we had the Cosmopolitan & Strawberry Smash-- both prepared great! Cosmos are usually a hit/miss situation for me; this was really good though- not too tart nor sweet-- very well balanced w/ a mild hint of vodka coming through, which after a few sips hits you in a nice, soft way. Husb said the Strawberry Smash was bangin!!-- the sibona amaro in it stabilized the fruitiness of the drink. For apps, we ordered the Calamari- it was soooo good & crispy/crunchy, I had to prevent myself from stuffing everything in my mouth! I was a bit sad I had to share this w/ my husb lol. It came with a hot & sour sauce w/ lemon which overall made the dish unique. For entree, I had the Scottish Salmon, came w/ scallops & I added crab cake to it. Succulent salmon was seared w/ great flavor, the sweet corn & pepper mixed in a tomato vinaigrette on the side under the scallops was just unbelievable. The crab cake was cut squared, hands down one of the best cakes. The flavor profile for the entire dish together in a bite was incomparable!! Definitely order this. Husb ordered the Gerber Farms Chicken, amish chicken served w/ risotto, greens on top of thyme jus (akin to a thin gravy). The chicken was cooked well-- juicy on the inside & a nice roast on the outside; the risotto wasnt heavy & didn't weigh the meal down, the thyme jus's flavor was subtle & it elevated the entire dish. For dessert, we got the Chocolate Hazelnut tart & Eleven Candy bar. I legit relished & inhaled the tart despite already being so full. Husb loved the Candy bar. A huge slice of brownie/caramel candy bar w/ chocolate mousse phew! The pics explain how mindblowin' everything was! A real one-of-a kind experience. Ron was great in explaining everything too. My experiences have not been high-end, perhaps more "tinfoil" than sapphire, to say the least....see below. That being said, it's proven to be a very middling experience each time, especially from a service standpoint. Each time has had mysterious delayed times to get waited upon, receive food and drinks, and every time has featured a mysterious disappearing item that we had to politely "remind" the server about after receiving the bill. On this occasion, we were offered to still receive a missing drink even though it was incredibly clear that we were ready to leave. One time, sure, but all three visits have had issues. This time, when the final bill was corrected, the math didn't seem to make sense - removing a $14 drink and the total came out $5 less. I'm being candid in saying instead of even dealing with the server once more, their tip corrected the discrepancy - no issues in dealing with the situation in that manner, given the sub-par service. Unacceptable and frustrating to have 3/3 times experiencing significant service issues. Food-wise, it's a solid "4" rating - salads have all been great, the dishes we'd recommend are the black cod and the short ribs. Good selection of semi-local beer and extensive wine list. It was noted that the menu had "changed" with the season, but the overall menu was 80% the same with some very subtle modifications - all over a two-year period. First time we went here, we sat at the tables above the bar area, and unfortunately there was a very bar-like smell that could be experienced throughout the meal (imagine having fine dining at the Rock Room on Polish Hill) - thankfully these other two times have been in the main dining area, on nights that haven't been very busy (adding to the frustration regarding the service notes above). Honestly, this is a legacy restaurant here in Pittsburgh, it's a shame that newer places with great food + service have a hard time launching in this environment.
