We were very excited to eat here and were very disappointed with service . Upon arriving to a near empty restaurant we were seated at a small corner table. Our first greeting from the waitress was "do you know what you want". I was excited they had table side martinis but was disappeared shortly after when they were no longer around for a drink after first drink. No one came back over to check on food or offer a drink. 2 managers and a sommelier were all circling the table and no one once asked how the food was or if we would like another drink. Went here for drinks a while ago and met like three ppl that worked there that said they were one of the managers. We got two plates so that the guys that showed up later were able to try. I got the spaghetti which was crab, uni, and chive butter. If you hate onions and scallions like I do. Very fresh! $42 is a bit steep in my opinion since you don't get much crab or uni, but I'd still get it again. Service was below average & the prices are ridiculous. -The beef tartare tasted as if it were made for an animal (and I do not ever disrespect food in that manner) -The scallop was nearly invisible & tasteless -The crispy lobster had legit one piece of actual lobster and everything else was just tempura balls and sauce -best thing I ate was the cinnamon donut. Not pictured: -sesame lavash was great but $14 for a piece of lavash is INSANE -comte & onion bread was OK, it was hot on the outside but the inside & middle was not warmed through (not too fresh) -porcini lasagna: absolute trash. It was served cold. (At least make the impression that you are serving freshly prepared food) Our entire order came out within 5 minutes of ordering. That is INSANE. They come over to you and explain all of the different spirits and garnishes and then create a personalized cocktail or traditional one. It's fun to experience once but not sure how many people keep getting it. We then had the following: -onion bread & Comte: this was amazing and you should 100% get it -fried artichokes: these were amazing. They didn't have breading which was perfect since they were light and crispy. The aioli was also amazing that came with it -the circle salad: this was like a wedge salad with blue cheese and bacon. It was good, but wish the bacon was thick cut bacon like they have at steakhouses -mushroom lasagna: this was very good, but very rich -prime rib: my husband loved this. I must start with the decor, because when you walk in the open storefront the decor is beautiful! Retro mid century vibes and a funky floor plan layout. Really fun but classy. Second, the food was AMAZING. The highlights for me were the truffle lasagna, which was rich, but light at the same time?! Lol idk how that makes sense, but it does to me, because it's a small portion of lasagna that 4 ppl shared as a small pasta course. It also had crispy edges that I love for lasagna! The other highlight was the prime rib service...wow. The way they come around to your table and ask you what cut you want, and slice it right there and dress it with au jus is heavenly if you're a prime rib fan! One of the best prime ribs I've had in the city, and I've tried them all...The Grill, Keens, 4 Charles...you name it, Monterey's was perfection! The cloud cake and bananas foster flambé were also really nice finishes to a perfect meal. Lastly, the one con...our drinks were delicious and the martini cart was a fun, nice touch...but every drink came out very delayed, and twice our drinks I think were actually forgotten about and the floor manager ended up serving me himself because the waitress forgot. It didn't even seem packed for a Sat night at prime time, so it's kind of curious as to why the drink service was super slow. And a request to switch out for a different brand of vodka was declined because the waitress said the cocktail is pre-mixed...with the alcohol already. That to me, seems odd for a classy place to premix a batch of cocktails with the alcohol already in it. But also, if the bartender wasn't slammed and if you have all the ingredients, I don't see why the bartender couldn't have made it, with a different brand of alcohol which my friend preferred. The bar seats were practically empty, and the dining floor didn't seem all that busy, because a few tables were empty and the top section was also empty. Made a reservation for family for Christmas dinner which was prixe fixe. We arrived at 7:15 for a 7:30 reservation. We were the only table seated in the entire section. After about 30 mins., the tables around us slowly started filling up. Service was slow. By the time they had taken our drink order, we had been there at least 20 mins. We ordered everything at once including dessert. Appetizers and children's meal (which we requested to come with apps) took a long time to come out but came out before our drink order even came. My daughter thought they had forgotten hers because it came about 10 mins after ours. My daughter was finished with her meal before our entrees came out. We ate our entrees reasonably fast and our dishes were cleared. Dessert cutlery were laid out. The tables surrounding us were still working on their entrees. We kept waiting. Slowly one by one the tables around us, finished their entrees, ordered their desserts and started getting them - 4 separate tables. We kept looking for our server or a manager to ask about ours. They would hurry past or couldn't be found. We thought let's give them grace since it's Christmas. Finally after the fourth table received their dessert and 2 tables already were paying and leaving, we asked our server about our dessert and that we had been here 2 hours already. He said he'd check back with the kitchen. No apology. More waiting (another 15 mins), the restaurant is slowly emptying. When he came out, one of the desserts had run out. He apologized for no longer having the dessert. I told him, you ran out because you served the 4 or 5 tables that came after us that dessert before us. He said nothing and left. The manager came out and apologized for not having the dessert and blamed the kitchen for not adequately preparing enough. Well, if the server and manager had done their jobs and checked that the orders came out in a timely manner as to when they were seated and ordered, this would not have happened. To not take accountability for not doing your job, the server not checking on the table, not checking the kitchen why the previous food order still was not ready, the manager clearly seeing we had no food on our table for about an hour and not following up on anything is inexcusable! This is the worst service I have experienced at any restaurant. They need to do better with their management and train their servers better. What should have been a nice Christmas dinner with my family ended up being very upsetting. We were one of the very last people to exit the restaurant that night at 10pm - not because we ate slowly but because our server disappeared, forgot about our order, never apologized and management tried to blame the kitchen. Food was mediocre, ambiance feels dated, service terrible. You are better off eating elsewhere. read more

Breakfast was a total rip off. $75 for bfast for just myself and only got eggs and yogurt with berries. Granola appeared to be a broken granola bar on top of yogurt with no taste. Waiter asked if I wanted berries so I agreed but they charged me $18 extra for strawberries and blueberries which was more than the granola with yogurt. Coffee was overpriced and never refilled. As I entered the restaurant, I was super impressed by the old world elegance of the art deco looking atmosphere. The carved roast beef was cut to order , table side and was tender and tasty. The service is un-rushed, polite and professional . I had two "issues" with this otherwise lovely restaurant: Firstly , they served me a martini in the smallest glass in creation. With the price of drinks these days, a more gracious pour is in order. Secondly , they pipe in loud music. In this atmosphere, something like Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald, softly in the background would be okay. Instead, it's loud Truck-stop stuff , and you strain to converse over it with dinner companions ! If they address these two issues, I would highly recommend this place. read more

There was no bearnaise sauce, and I asked three times for it before I even saw how well done the steak was. I got salt, pepper, ketchup, dijonnaise, and a steak sauce in response to my inquiry about the missing bearnaise (and no bearnaise) Finally, I tried the steak and ack! It was like shoe leather. They kindly and swiftly took it back to the kitchen. A new plate arrived a reasonable time later, this time with the elusive bearnaise sauce. Fries were fresh, crispy and hot! Unfortunately, while the steak was cooked as I requested, the cut was so chewy, I couldn't enjoy much of it. Five stars for service, but I would not go back for the food. read more

10 out of 10 absolutely fantastic! We have had some great meals in the last year but honestly I think this one was the best. We started with the shrimp cocktail and tuna tartare which were both fresh and perfect. Baby girl had the kids pasta with butter and cheese and it was so good that was better than most restaurants signature pasta dish, she loved it. I had the fillet medium rare and the Caesar salad with white Anchovy and the Mrs had the Japanese Eggplant. The Caesar with the white anchovy was fresh and excellent. The fillet was cooked absolutely perfectly, melt in your mouth with a Bordelaise sauce that was simply divine. The Japanese eggplant was so tender and flavorful served with the most delicious mushrooms we have had in ages. The cocktails were as good as the food... basil Hayden paper plane, espresso martini and cosmopolitan. And the best was last with the chocolate soufflé and the dessert of the year, a rhum baba that was sooo light with one of the best homemade whip cream you can find. I highly recommend giving Monterey a try. You won't be disappointed but you might eat a bit too much. It's worth it!! read more

This new place is a must. Jessica O was our server and she was very attentive and knowledgeable. Late night in NYC. Where to eat. My sister and I were walking around trying to find a place to eat when we stumbled across this place. It looked really cool from outside and had a crowd at the bar so we decided to go inside. We were seated right away at a nice table by the bar. The host was lovely, and so was our waitress. It was late so we didn't want anything too heavy. I wanted to order their Caesar salad and add grilled chicken, but the waitress said that they don't do that. I thought that was odd because I'm usually always able to add chicken at other restaurants. This place is fairly new. They have only been open for a few weeks, so maybe they are still getting settled. I also was interested in trying their porcini lasagne it is served with black truffles, spinach, cheese, and no meat, but I wasn't sure that it was meatless and it was probably going to be too heavy and large for me to eat alone. Sis didn't want it. So me and my sis shared the fried artichokes, they were really yummy. We then shared a fresh Bibb salad, and the Japanese eggplant which came with white basmati rice in the cutest Lecruset dish. The purée served with the eggplant was also delicious! The eggplant accompanied some wild mushrooms they were also very tasty. The service was good, we had our waters filled consistently which I love and appreciate. The ambiance was fantastic, and the decor is modern. We were satisfied. I would like to come back and try some of their other menu items. read more

They just opened - so the service was a bit shoddy. Hoped the food would make up for it, but unfortunately fell a bit short. There were definitely some highlights, but the entrees were the let down. - Comte and Onion Bread: Must get and the best thing we had - Barbecued Prawns: Really good - would recommend it but wish they used meatier prawns. The head on though is great to get all the goods inside - Smoked beer tartare: Not worth getting. Meat was decent. But the chips on the side were soggy and lukewarm. Definitely not fresh whatsoever. Regardless of the chips, still just an ok dish. - Caesar Salad: The chef here owns Isabelle's, and it's just the best Caesar dressing I've had. So this is solid. Now onto the not great: - Prime Rib: way overcooked and the portion just didn't seem worth $77 - Baked Potato w/ caviar: Wasn't warmed throughout. Some parts in the center of the potato weren't cooked through. Really wish it was served properly and wasn't so heavy on the chives to enjoy the caviar a bit more. Definitely not worth it whatsoever - kinda gimmicky - Spaghetti with uni and crab: Good flavor. Lots of crab. Just had too many shells than acceptable and was picking them out of my mouth every bite. I absolutely loved it here. I couldn't have possibly been happier with my food and with the experience. I ordered the beef tartare to start, and it came with potato chips. The beef tartare was delicious, and I ordered the porch chop for my entree, which was also delightful. There were plenty of gluten-free options on the menu, and everything I tried was delicious. I got to try the uni with caviar, and that was delicious too. I didn't use to like the uni but after coming here I really started to appreciate it. I got to try the caesar salad too, which was good. Every single thing that I got to try from the menu was amazing. There was this really cool meringue-like dessert that I ordered too with a cup of decaf coffee and that was amazing. I even got the chance to meet some wonderful people at the restaurant who were super helpful. That being said, 100% not worth the exorbitant price tag where a steak with scarcely a side is $75 and each cocktail is $30. You can get better for much cheaper in NYC. Stubborn, unaccommodating policy lost them a future good customer. My father has a law firm two blocks from here. He and 7 other people from his office went there for a business breakfast. If he had had a good breakfast experience, he would have brought one of his partners there for dinner the next night, and this might have become one of the firm's regular eating spots. Instead, he won't go back and here's why... My dad asked for a simple adjustment to a menu item and they refused to accommodate him. He wanted a Western Omelette and they said "no," so he asked for a simple Bacon Omelette and they said that the chef only makes items as listed on the menu. They make omelettes to order there and have both bacon and eggs, but refused to make a simple bacon omelette. In the end, they gave him plain eggs with bacon on the side. Why did they have to give him a hard time? My father does not have food allergies (he's just a 75 year old guy who likes things the way he likes them), but I do have several dietary restrictions, and one of the factors that we use to rate our restaurant experiences is how kind and accommodating the establishment is. I very rarely can just order menu items as is. I never expect a restaurant to magically have ingredients they don't already have, but to the extent that items are made-to-order, it's really important that they try to be nice about making adjustments. If the management for Monterey reads this, I hope you take a look at your policies and consider that it wouldn't cost the restaurant anything to show a bit more kindness and accommodation to your customers, and you might not lose out on another opportunity to gain some regulars. read more
