Amazing experience at Monterrey in Matthews. Service, quality of food was wonderful. HANDMADE guac to DIE FOR!!! Seriously I filled up on THAT!!! Omg and the cheese!!! Do not go for the regular guacamole. Go for HOMEMADE! Best decision you will ever make! Don't get me wrong. The mixed guacamole is not bad - but it's what you could make it home. The handmade guacamole?! Oh my gosh, I would be happy eating it all by itself with the chips. Cannot say enough about the service, from the minute you walk in the door they are very attentive and gracious. The portions? Extremely generous. The quality of the food on par with what I expected. Which was five star. When I asked for something that was on the chalk menu at the front? Beef Birra? They had no problem making it. I opened it up and took pictures of it so you could see it, so flavorful! It even tasted better the next day because I had leftovers, it was so generous. Place was clean, food portions were great, highly highly recommend this for good affordable meals - we even had leftovers to take home! Probably because I stuffed my face on the handmade guacamole lol! Seriously? It's the best I've had anywhere. And that cheese dip? Make sure you try it!

Monterreys is a Mexican food staple! The service is quick, there are really good lunch specials and you know you can get in and out quickly. I really like their tacos, enchiladas and queso! I could eat a whole tub of queso and chips The chips are homemade and delicious. Monterreys also has drink specials and they make celebrating a birthday fun with a sombrero and singing.

Chicken Burrito with rice & beans, sauce might be from a can??

So, after seeing a fellow yelper post some pictures on Instagram, and being in the area, I had to visit Monterray as it has been years since I have been and remember it being okay. Unfortunately this experience was so disappointing I am not sure I would return. We arrived shortly after 12:00pm on a Sunday. Once we were seated it took more than 10 minutes for someone to come to our table. No water, no chips and salsa, which I always remember being delivered upon arrival. Once we ordered drinks, and asked for Chips and Salsa, it took another 15 minutes for the waitress to return. And, before I go further, they were not busy what so ever, so not sure why it took so long. Move on. I ordered the #18, burrito, taco with rice and beans, and added a tostado and a side of pickled jalapeños and sour cream. Within 5 minutes the food arrived, which makes me question how things are prepped. Needless to say, very disappointing. I'll break my meal down: Chicken Burrito. Chicken was cooked well and had good flavor, but the red sauce definitely is not home made, and if it is taste like ketchup. Horrible. The taco, as you will see, nothing but a scoop of meat, not seasoned what so ever, and cheese. As for the tostado, it was the same bland ground beef so didn't eat it at all. The only promising thing was the chips and salsa. I will say the chips were fried just right, and I do like their salsa. With so many other Mexican restaurants that I love not sure I would return. Oh, one more thing. $2.95 for a Sprite, really?? Is that what a soda cost at other restaurants? If I would have known that I would have just had water.

Having been to the Monterrey in the University area several times for lunch, we decided to give this Monterrey on Independence a try for dinner this past weekend, and we weren't disappointed. The restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside, as it's in a strip mall near Outback Steakhouse. Once you get inside, though, you can see that they took the extra effort to actually do something with their square footage. It's not just one big room; they divided it up into sections and included high-backed booths for additional privacy during your dinner. The Mexican decor is very fitting and creates the ambiance. The dinner menu is a lot more extensive than lunch, but they still have combos from which you can choose. Although instead of about 6 or 7 combos, there's about 30. And those are just the numbered ones. There are many, many more with names. Ay, chihuahua! The thing to do is, if you know what you'd like Mexican-wise, keep that in your head and look for a meal that has those combinations. That's the quickest way to get through the menu! I had "La Mejor" (translated = "the best"). It came with a beef soft taco, chalupa (different from Taco Bell's), and chile relleno (which isn't really a stuffed chile, it's more of a pile of mush of cheese and meat (?) on top of a tiny chile pepper, but oh-so-good). And while the meal was good, I wouldn't call it the best. We'll go back, but I'll try something different next time. The chips and salsa they bring to your table are nothing out of the ordinary, but they always taste so good to whet your appetite. The salsa comes in a little decanter which you can then pour into your salsa bowl(s). It's unnecessary, but the presentation of it is very nice. It's also a good place for kids and groups. There is plenty of seating and they have a good number of choices for kids' meals.

Great price, super filling. The steak tacos (tacos de asada) were the best ones I ever had, paired with rice, beans and Pico de gallo.

Great Mexican food for the price. Esteban is a very courteous waiter. The gringo dip is a frat choice for an appetizer.

Handful of times I have ordered it to go and it's always hot, fresh, and amazingly FLAVORFUL. A plus to them is that they always have it ready in 20-25 mins. So if you're starving and need something quick, La Unica will have it ready for you. We have dined in, the service is upbeat and quick. I always get the same dish and it's so hard to order a different one. BUT my boyfriend is there to order everything and it's so worth the chance of trying something new. When my X and I first moved to Indian Trail, a lot of friends suggested this restaurant as the authority for Tex Mex. It's a good thing they have a big parking lot as they're generally packed, which means people like it. Me? My short reply is it's pretty good. Opening up the doors the atmosphere has a bit of reserved authenticity, no dollar tree prefab gimmicks are there just to plant a flag, claiming to be just like all other options out there. No this is the real deal with a warming atmosphere designed to entice locals to take a load off and relax. The server stand is directly in front and what appears to be a predominately family-owned business. The staff is quick to greet and seat everyone who enters and the place is extremely clean with a low noise level. Lets get to the food, shall we? First of all, I prefer thinner chips as theirs are really thick, but that's not a quality issue. The salsa is darn good and be careful for asking for hot salsa, you'll get what you asked for. Generally I fill up on chips and get something light however I've heard so many good things about La Unica I had to hold back so I could sample some of the former mrs food and gorge on my own. Please note I did drop by twice so I have three dishes I can speak too. First the former Mrs me got the flautas dinner. All the sides; lettuce, tomato, guac, sour cream and rice were fresh and tasty. The tomatoes were ripe and the guac wasn't discolored which means fresh. The flautas were perfectly cooked, crispy with flavorful and moist chicken while not being greasy. Top it with some lettuce and sour cream YUM! My first sample was the Shrimp burrito or I'll call it the Titanic as it was HUGE & IT WENT DOWN! Very tasty with plenty of fat shrimp and all the sides inside. I found it fun to cut into it, pop a bite into my mouth and see which ingredients hit my tastebuds; a revolving experience. Overall, it was very good and not to spicy. For the record, I don't eat beans so I'm not a good judge of what happened there. My final menu item was my best bud, my old faithful, my ride or die - steak fajitas. Again, the sides were awesome no issue there but I found the steak a bit tough. It was seasoned well and tasty but I did some chewing to finish it off. I think it may have been an off day. Other than the MMA fighting steak (implying it's tough) the dish is outstanding. Overall, La Unica is the best Mexican aka Tex Mex restaurant in Indian Trail. The staff is friendly and fast, the chips and salsa are great and for the most part you can always get a seat. Even when busy, the food doesn't seem to suffer. I wish I could have tried more items, alas life has dictated I'm a nomad so I won't be back. But don't let that stop you for hitting up the best south of the border joint in town!

Yum yum! I ordered the Bananas Foster waffle with chicken tenders and whew...absolutely delicious. Sweet, warm, indulgent and exactly the kind of comfort food my spirit needed. My brother-in-love couldn't stop talking about his Bananas Foster pancakes with country ham -- though he did lobby for a slightly bigger serving of the ham. And my SO completely cleaned his plate of liver mush, grits, eggs and biscuit - he never does that. He also had a passion fruit margarita that he raved about the entire ride home. Honestly, taking care of me right now is a full-time job, so I fully support the brunch cocktail. What I loved most? Wakey Wakey isn't trying to be fancy or pretentious.
