1st time customer to this jewel. I'm an old school Southern comfort food person. So, new to this part of Charlotte I look for new eateries. My waitress was bright and smiling on this early Sunday morning. I ordered my usual "test" plate I use on 1st trips to get a feel for the place. Nailed it! Fast, hot, freakin' delicious. When she set my plate down the 1st thing I notice was my biscuit was the size of grandma's "cathead" biscuits, called that because they're that big! Eggs over easy, perfect! Sausage patties large and very good, similar to Neese's if you know what I mean, and perfect! Hashbrowns, perfect! Add the constant top-off on my coffee with the aforementioned smiles, and this is a hidden jewel in Charlotte folks. Recovering from surgery under the watchful eyes of my three caregivers, and two of them finally decided I was well enough for a little brunch adventure to Wakey Wakey in Matthews. Yum yum! I ordered the Bananas Foster waffle with chicken tenders and whew...absolutely delicious. Sweet, warm, indulgent and exactly the kind of comfort food my spirit needed. My brother-in-love couldn't stop talking about his Bananas Foster pancakes with country ham -- though he did lobby for a slightly bigger serving of the ham. And my SO completely cleaned his plate of liver mush, grits, eggs and biscuit - he never does that. He also had a passion fruit margarita that he raved about the entire ride home. Honestly, taking care of me right now is a full-time job, so I fully support the brunch cocktail. What I loved most? Wakey Wakey isn't trying to be fancy or pretentious. The food here was flavorful and filling. The ingredients were also fresh on each dish. The burrito had a mound of juicy/tender steak pieces. It was delicious. I ended the meal with two street tacos which were Lengua and Pastor. Very tasty. The chips and salsas are great and spicy but a good kind of spicy. The service was excellent and attentive. Came last weekend for breakfast/brunch. We found the place on google and were under the impression that it was a Mexican restaurant. Waited let us know that the Mexican restaurant is a separate establishment by the same owner. I'm not a huge breakfast person so I was disappointed. Food was just okay. We like Mexican food and this one offered very nice choices. Situated on the outside corner of a strip mall, this little restaurant had a nice ambiance to it. Colorful designs on the walls, a dozen or so tables scattered around the dining room, a little bar that offered the usuals, and lots of windows for an open-air feeling. The room was run by just two people, but they seemed to have everything well in hand, with the kitchen putting out the food ... and you can tell someone is in the back hand preparing all the food. For dinner we had the Original Quesadilla (chose the steak version and it was 4 star very nice), a beef enchilada with mole (4 stars for the dish and 5 stars for the mole), and a pair of ground beef American tacos (3 star good with a generous helping of beef in each). Now we single out the "American" only because that is how they offer it ... you can have the tacos made American-style or Mexican-style ... the difference being a few items like cilantro and peppers. We liked having choices and the dishes were very tasty. This place also is sort of a sports bar with drink specials most days ... and it seems like the drinks come in four sizes. On our night (Tuesday), they had jumbo margaritas (the second smallest size) for half price ... so two for the price of one. The drinks did not taste alcoholic at all and might have been sort of watered down, but they were very tasty ... let's call them slightly loaded drinks. Excellent brunch place. Their menu is pretty big - not quite as big as cheesecake factory menu but decently large in terms of variety. Had the eggs Benedict with hash browns (perfectly crispy and thoroughly cooked on the inside). Fried pork tenderloin sandwich on Brioche fried okra was excellent. Biggest surprise was their pineapple pancakes that was not only covered with pineapple but also had pineapple in the actual battered pancake itself. Very rare to cook the fruit in the actual pancake batter. Outstanding. Will come back. read more

I worked 8-5 was quite hungry to say the least . I ordered Carne Asada fries. They were four mins away. I decided to stay at and eat outside on the patio. The girls rls were quite pleasant. I let them know I had ordered already but I'd like to stay and have a margarita with salt and a jalapeño. It was huge! Yeah! The carne Asada could've had more steak but it was good just the same. This has to be one of the most underrated restaurants in the Charlotte area. But because since it's only been open a couple of months, I'm sure it won't last long. I met up with some old co workers at Mezcali in Charlotte on Sunday night at around 8 PM. We all sat at the bar and chatted while reviewing the menu which is massive by the way! I finally decided on a chimichanga with extra queso and pico. One of my friends ordered a chicken ACP and the other ordered loaded nachos. The restaurant had margarita specials for $6.99 and the drink is huge. I was instantly impressed with the price and flavor of the drink. My meal and drink was less than $25! The food was simply delicious and the staff was fun and friendly. They didn't rush us out as closing time approached. We left right at ten o'clock on the dot. This is my first time visiting this restaurant and I'm surprised that I hadn't heard of it before I know that they have a Huntersville location that I may check out soon. Went early on a Saturday for lunch. Was greeted and seated immediately since it wasn't crowded. Waiter came over and was very friendly and bubbly. I ordered the birria tacos and they came out, fresh and hot. But for the price I felt they were pretty small and not filled with a lot of meat. They were tasty however, but for almost $15 I would have expected more, or at least a side of beans or something. The tacos here are out of this world -- absolutely fantastic! I've also tried the chimichangas, and they were just as delicious. The food is consistently flavorful and satisfying every single time. Honestly, the only downside is that I somehow forget this place even exists until I'm sitting in traffic and spot it. I don't know what it is, but every time I finally stop in, I'm reminded of how good it is and wonder why I don't come more often. This location has probably been open about 3 months (maybe less). Since then I have been here at least 6 times. The staff remembers me which is a plus. The food is delicious!! Everything I have ever ordered here is well seasoned & made to order. They offer daily specials and the drinks are really good as well. They offer a tequila flight which I haven't tried yet but is very reasonably priced in comparison to other restaurants I've been to in the CLT area. When you arrive you get complimentary tortilla chips with hot & mild salsa and a creamy guacamole dip for the table to share. One of my favorite things to order here is Mescalis Best. I can't get enough of this dish! I love that it offers vegetables that I don't usually see in Mexican dishes like zucchini & mushroom. The chipoltle cream sauce is delicious. I would have it on EVERYTHING if ai could!! LOL Mescalis Best: Steak, chicken and shrimp sautéed with peppers, onions, zucchini and mushrooms. Topped with our creamy chipotle cheese sauce. Comes with rice and beans on the side. My friend, who is a very picky eater, always gets chicken fajitas at every mexican restaurant we go to. This time she decided to be adventurous & it paid off. I have been to this restaurant a few times and it is definitely a go-to Mexican restaurant in Charlotte. Margaritas are always well-prepared, and the service is always excellent. Any of the chicken dishes with homemade sauces are worth a try. Fajitas are seasoned well and the portions are adequate. Very consistent quality.
