Do not go for the regular guacamole. Go for HOMEMADE! Best decision you will ever make! Don't get me wrong. The mixed guacamole is not bad - but it's what you could make it home. The handmade guacamole?! Oh my gosh, I would be happy eating it all by itself with the chips. So, after seeing a fellow yelper post some pictures on Instagram, and being in the area, I had to visit Monterray as it has been years since I have been and remember it being okay. Unfortunately this experience was so disappointing I am not sure I would return. We arrived shortly after 12:00pm on a Sunday. Once we were seated it took more than 10 minutes for someone to come to our table. No water, no chips and salsa, which I always remember being delivered upon arrival. Once we ordered drinks, and asked for Chips and Salsa, it took another 15 minutes for the waitress to return. And, before I go further, they were not busy what so ever, so not sure why it took so long. Move on. I ordered the #18, burrito, taco with rice and beans, and added a tostado and a side of pickled jalapeños and sour cream. Within 5 minutes the food arrived, which makes me question how things are prepped. Needless to say, very disappointing. I'll break my meal down: Chicken Burrito. Chicken was cooked well and had good flavor, but the red sauce definitely is not home made, and if it is taste like ketchup. Horrible. The taco, as you will see, nothing but a scoop of meat, not seasoned what so ever, and cheese. As for the tostado, it was the same bland ground beef so didn't eat it at all. The only promising thing was the chips and salsa. I will say the chips were fried just right, and I do like their salsa. With so many other Mexican restaurants that I love not sure I would return. Oh, one more thing. $2.95 for a Sprite, really?? Is that what a soda cost at other restaurants? If I would have known that I would have just had water. read more

The waitress was incredible! She was friendly, polite, and attentive. My toddler loved her and she ran out to return my phone when I accidentally forgot it. The food I ordered was nice, it was standard fare which is what I wanted. Everything was at a good quality and decent price. Every time I order from here my food is delicious! The only thing I don't like with this restaurant is you can tell that they overly use vegetables in their dishes to divert or distract from the small amounts of meat in your dish, this restaurant isn't cheap either so I feel like for $25+ 1 meal I should get more meat than onions in my dish lol. Four years ago my mom moved from downtown Matthews to right near Monterrey. I was SO hesitant to give up El Valle as that had been our staple for decades. Finally she got me to go and there is no turning back. Monterrey is the best Mexican food in Matthews. I love El Valle, I promise, and Azteca, and there is no last place here but Monterrey is a cut above. They use legit enchilada sauce, they give you super-sized Dos Equis for next to nothing, and they get crazy with their specials, something I don't see El Valle or Azteca doing. Having been to the Monterrey in the University area several times for lunch, we decided to give this Monterrey on Independence a try for dinner this past weekend, and we weren't disappointed. The restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside, as it's in a strip mall near Outback Steakhouse. Once you get inside, though, you can see that they took the extra effort to actually do something with their square footage. It's not just one big room; they divided it up into sections and included high-backed booths for additional privacy during your dinner. The Mexican decor is very fitting and creates the ambiance. The dinner menu is a lot more extensive than lunch, but they still have combos from which you can choose. Although instead of about 6 or 7 combos, there's about 30. And those are just the numbered ones. There are many, many more with names. Ay, chihuahua! The thing to do is, if you know what you'd like Mexican-wise, keep that in your head and look for a meal that has those combinations. That's the quickest way to get through the menu! I had "La Mejor" (translated = "the best"). It came with a beef soft taco, chalupa (different from Taco Bell's), and chile relleno (which isn't really a stuffed chile, it's more of a pile of mush of cheese and meat (?) on top of a tiny chile pepper, but oh-so-good). And while the meal was good, I wouldn't call it the best. We'll go back, but I'll try something different next time. The chips and salsa they bring to your table are nothing out of the ordinary, but they always taste so good to whet your appetite. The salsa comes in a little decanter which you can then pour into your salsa bowl(s). It's unnecessary, but the presentation of it is very nice. It's also a good place for kids and groups. I try to shy away from "chain" restaurants, but this one is exceptionally good. I'm a sucker for Mexican food anyway - heck I used to frequent this place at least once a week. The prices are great, usually the place is not that busy, so you get a good, hot meal without dinging the wallet (or purse) to hard. The dining room is split up to 2 sides, I guess at one point it was smoking and non-smoking (is my best guess)... but it was always exciting to come in and figure out which side they would seat you on. For the longest time my roommate and I kept getting seated on one side and couldn't figure out if the other side was much better. The grass is always greener...LOL but in this case, I don't think it matters. The chips and salsa that are offered with everything are pretty good, the salsa has a bit of a kick to it so I like it. I ate here last night for the first time for dinner. I was craving Mexican and decided I would venture away from my typical Azteca and try something new. Monterrey is tucked back in an unassuming strip mall. The inside is completely different than what you would expect on the outside. It is really nicely decorated and very "Mexican restaurant". We were promptly greeted with warm chips and salsa. I got the enchiladas verdes and they were pretty good. My boyfriend got the chicken and cheese (queso con pollo) and it was okay. I have definitely had better Mexican food, but this is a solid place for cheap, American-Mexican cuisine. I was disappointed that they only had chicken or ground beef tacos. I didn't expect much from a strip mall Mexican restaurant, but wow was I surprised. The chips and salsa was average. Where I thought this place shined was the entree. I had a vegetarian burrito with a cheese sauce on it and it was hands down one of the best burritos I've ever tasted. This was one of the first Mexican restaurants that had a separate section for vegetarian options (8 of them plus a few others throughout the menu). The service was friendly and quick.
