A coworker recommended this place and was pleasantly surprised. It's hard to find good Mexican food in Newman. We went with another couple and all 4 of us enjoyed it. I had tried to submit this review once before, but the site couldn't find this restaurant location. As I was trying to add it, the site stalled and ate my review... Hopefully this time goes better, now that I can see that the location already exists. We used to eat at a different Monterey location north of Atlanta about a decade ago (when we lived up there). There hadn't been a franchise open anywhere down this way until now, AFAIK. I ran across this one online and suggested we go try it out. We ate here on a Saturday in early December. They are about a half mile west of I-85 a couple of exits north of Newnan. The area appears to be a (currently) new large shopping plaza anchored by a Publix. There are a number of other retain shops there, and also an outparcel with even more shops. Monterey is located in the outparcel. There seemed to be sufficient parking close by, but if not there is always the huge adjoining Publix lot. Most of the patrons seemed to be families with kids or groups of older couples. I think there is a huge subdivision adjacent to this plaza, so between that and the areas in between Fairburn and Newnan, they draw a big crowd. It was almost but not quite full when we were there. The layout of the restaurant (as you enter from the front) is a large single room with a bar towards the back left corner. There are booths along the right wall and tables covering most of the rest of the floor. The menu had the standard Tex-Mex offerings you'd expect. As seems to the trend lately, they no longer list 30+ individual combo meals - you just build your own from a set of items (which is fine). My wife opted for a soup, which was huge. She had at least half of it left for later. If I lived a bit closer to this place, I'd probably become a semi-regular. As it is, we have other Mexican options closer to us, so I probably won't make the 20-minute drive here that often. It was worth stopping in, though. read more

One word: DISAPPOINTED. Christmas Eve dinner was a NO FOR THE SERVICE AND FOOD. And I don't even give 1 star reviews out like that. Sorry but not sorry. We had a table of 14 which is a lot to handle but we were not checked in on as often and the food was subpar. I did enjoy and appreciate my sangria but that's about it. Our waiter wasn't present. I didn't feel good vibes. My chicken enchiladas weren't flavorful but dry, bland, and boring. I wouldn't recommend. Thanks for the holiday decor. Oh well! Happy Holidays! read more

We LOVE the food here. Tonight, we ordered delivery directly from the restaurant. 2 of the items weren't delivered, so I called the restaurant, and the owner herself personally brought them to us within 10 minutes. You don't get that kind of over-the-top service anywhere. DoorDash will refund for missed items, but not rush them to you like Monterrey did. The food and atmosphere at Monterrey have always been amazing. Now, we are forever Monterrey family. read more

My family had ordered takeout from Monterrey of Newnan in the Arbor Springs Publix shopping center a handful of times and had been pleased, but I chose to wait for the full dine-in experience to write a review. Happy to report I was not disappointed! Obligatory Area Mexican Review Trigger Warning: I'm just a basic white girl. I have no idea what constitutes "authentic" Mexican cuisine in the rural south, nor am I particularly concerned with legitimizing my review by selecting dishes more exciting than a basic lunch special. Please adjust expectations accordingly. I went with my charming and witty mother during peak lunch (12:00 pm) on a Tuesday afternoon. Our server--and, as I was to learn, our surprisingly capable bartender--was Ulysses. He was attentive but not overly so, and gave my mother and I ample time to visit and enjoy our cocktails without rushing us. The restaurant is tastefully decorated in modern fashion with a statement wall full of the most beautiful black and white portraits of (what I assume to be; pls don't cancel me) Mexican citizens. Everything is higher end: furniture is quality, comfortable and substantial. A rare air of restraint can be found in all decor selections. It is a very pleasant atmosphere. Busy enough as to not arouse concern for the business's future, but quiet enough to not want to tell too many people about your new favorite place. But here I am, revealing all to you. You're welcome. I got the "Top Shelf Margarita" made with Silver Herradura, triple sec, I think also maybe Cointreau?, agave and lime juice. And PTL it actually IS lime juice. Not that foul fluid-of-the-devil sour mix but actual lime juice. It was very well-balanced: boozy, sweet, and tart in blissful proportions. My mom had the "Sangrita", which she chose to have frozen: a mix of margarita and sangria that I fully expected to turn my stomach in the most horrifically budget Mexican way, but was actually shockingly subtle and tasted mostly like a more complex pomegranate juice. Hats off to Ulysses for expert execution of both of these delicious cocktails. The chips and salsa were inoffensive. Chips were fresh but perhaps slightly thicker than I prefer--not a swipe left offense by any means--and the salsa was very tomato forward and fresh tasting. Not particularly complex or spicy or interesting, but good. Queue the eyerolls and immediate dismissal of our entire persons, but both of us got the "1 Item" Lunch Special, which includes beans and rice for $10.99: I had cheese enchilada, and my mom had chile relleno. Both were very tasty. Again, no reinventing the wheel here or anything, but everything was a good texture and had solid flavor/was amply seasoned. For example, the refried beans weren't pureed all to he!!, and smacked deliciously of larded umami™. I'm a fan. And if you're not yet so jaded that you can admit sometimes a cheesy-beany-ricey stew is just what you want to slide some sturdy, serviceable tortilla chips into after polishing off a plain ol' burrito, you might like this place, too. If not, sit at the bar and ask Ulysses to mix you up something delicious. Either way, let's agree to just keep this quietly dependable gem between us, ok? read more

I had been seeing a ton of people going in and out of this place, but didn't know what it was since they didn't have a sign up at the time. One of my coworkers told me about, so I decided to check it out. My husband and I entered and were not greeted at all. We stood there waiting to be seated about 5 minutes. It was not crowded at all so I didn't understand why it was taking so long. There was a younger guy walking back and forth from the kitchen looking at us, as well as the "bartender/waiter" sitting down at the bar without a care in the world. The waitress kept looking at us also as she walked from table to table asking if they needed anything else? Finally the guy from the bar turns around and sees us, then proceeds to seat us at a table. The food was good, but the service was HORRIBLE!!! I had the Mojarra and it was very good. My husband had mixed fajitas with flour tortillas and it too was good. No plans of returning anytime soon. Even though it's about 5 minutes from me, I would drive further away to receive better service. read more

Well, what can I say, we haven't been to this place in a couple of months, and today was like night and day, The service was horrible, our server didn't speak English, and if you did, nobody could hear him because he was super spoken. It took 10 minutes and two tries to get unsweet and iced tea order for my wife, correct, the restaurant looks like it has so much staff, but still empty water glasses, no refills, no busing The servers walk around other people stables, and don't even acknowledge the customer. That's been sitting there. I order their Monterey, something dish that had ribeye and shrimp, the ribeye was super fatty. A lot of grizzle, you can taste the cheap quality of meat. I moved to Newnan 1 1/2 years ago and have not been impressed with the food choices especially Mexican food. My husband is Hispanic so I cook a lot of traditional Mexican for friends and family but sometime I wanna go out and eat good Mexican food without having to slave over the stove. We have definitely found it here. The cocktails are hand crafted and well balanced. The food was amazing and well priced. I usually have to add salt and lime to gauc but not here it was well seasoned and balanced. Salsa had a nice kick and great texture. I've come here twice and I'll keep coming back for sure. read more

We went to the Monterrey Mexican Restaurant at 55 Arbor Springs, Newnan, GA today. It is a relatively new place on the outskirts of Newnan. I thought it was new but saw reviews going back to January so it has had plenty of times to work out its new restaurant kinks but it hasn't. We were there for lunch. My wife had a burrito and I had a lunch special that had chicken enchiladas, rice and beans. The chips brought out were stale and the salsa was thin and ketchupie. Both our dishes were bland, tasteless and hardly room temperature. My wife's burrito had a doughy tortilla and no spice or seasoning in the meat. Just a big ball of ground beef. My rice and beans were ok but my chicken was so tough and stringy I had to saw on it with a knife. The tortillas were hard to cut through, as well. Service was subpar. No fill-ups on drinks. A lot of staff standing around doing nothing. Although the portions are large, everything is overpriced. On a good note, the place is new, clean, and has clean restrooms. I can't recommend Monterrey in Newnan. Sorry. read more
