Great experience here tonight. Had the kids cheeseburger with fries and chocolate milk, a sunset strip burger and a Philly cheesesteak. Also had beef barley soup and a soda. Total came to $37. Montville Diner is more like Dontville Diner. Highly disappointing, especially for a NJ diner. I don't know if I should start with the fact that the appetizers and food came out all at once or that one meal came strangely later than all the others or that the nachos were basically just tortilla chips with the smallest amount of cheese on top and once the top layer was gone it was just chips or that my medium rare burger was fully brown inside instead of anywhere near medium rare. Three stars is pushing it, unfortunately. When my daughter, who will eat any breakfast I put in front of her these days (damn growth spurts), says she doesn't want to go back here because her eggs and hashbrowns were terrible, I have to take note. Back when I lived in Pine Brook, before they renovated the Montville Diner, I'd have given this place 4-5 stars. Breakfasts were awesome, especially the French Toast and their ham, spinach, and cheddar omelette. Great sandwiches, burgers, and 'real' food too for lunch and dinner. Unfortunately, this isn't 1999, and along the way I feel like they've lost their way...lost sight of what a great NJ diner is supposed to be to those of us who patronize great Jersey diners. It doesn't take much to make a diner successful if you serve good food and you're in a good location. Jerseyans will put up with crabby waitresses, high prices, a weak side salad, and even crappy parking situations, but we won't stand for our diners serving undercooked or overcooked mediocre food. I can make crappy food at home. I want big portions and food that screams-get your ass back here soon. Disco fries, a great French Dip, breakfasts to die for, good burgers, unhealthy fried foods, and great chicken soup...Montville Diner used ot hit items like these out of the ballpark. Sadly, not any more, at least not the past few times me or anyone in my family has dined here. I always go to a place at least three times before posting. Food is very good diner food, salads are well portioned, wraps and sandwiches are top shelf. Plenty of quality meat, and not just thrown together. The staff is probably the friendliest and most outgoing I've ever come upon in this area. The owner/manager should take a few lessons from them. We went on Sunday night. We arrived at 830 and knew they were closing at 9 but we were away for the day and just wanted to get something easy to make. If Montville diner didn't want us there they should have said we close at 9 and told us to come another day. Our waiter was slow and seemed annoyed we came in late . Even the chef came out and kinda gave us a look. We ordered fast items to make . 2 order of pancakes eggs and a waffle and 2 Mac and cheese for the kids. Everything was gross . To be fair my toast was good. I usually don't write bad reviews. There were a few places , but I like to eat at local places instead of a large chains. We did learn a lesson . VERY quiet. No music you are sitting in silence. The workers stare a lot. Overall weird vibes. Went there on a Sunday and usually diners are busy on Sunday's and on holiday weekend but not this place. The food was also not great. Got a basic waffle and came out completely burnt. Their potatoes were watery and eggs had a strange texture. The waiter we had kept disappearing for long periods of time. Not the ideal Sunday brunch. Very old fashioned as well. I don't generally leave reviews but Tony was just too sweet not to comment. I grew up in the area (from Valley View to HS graduation) but haven't been back in yearssssssss. However, it was so nice to see it still open so I popped in. It was quiet and I get the sense and even when busy the wait is never terribly long. The service was fantastic. Tony was our server. He's kind, warm, and patient. Such a star. The food menu is impressive! Jersey takes our diner's seriously okay?! My wife, family and I have been going to Montville Diner for many years...we have since stopped. It had been at least 3 months since we have been here, but tonight we went since it was right down the street and it was late. The food has been on the decline for a while now. I don't know if they changed cooks or not, but they need a better one. The food is below mediocre. The service staff is not the good either. Only one guy is still there and that is Rich. He is the best they have. All the others are new. Our waitress tonight came to take our order and then check on us during our meal and both times she smelled like an ashtray. And she left a trail of nasty smoke smell that lingered for a few minutes each time after she left. The decor is tired....the carpet in the dining room needs to be ripped up, thrown out and replaced with hardwood or some other type of hard flooring. The carpet is just gross. I love this diner. It's close to my parents home and I visit frequently. Today, however, was an exception. The server we had (not even relevant enough to remember her name) was the rudest and nastiest person I've met in a while. Needless to say, the service was mediocre and disappointing. I can't help but feel that her demeanor was mostly impacted by race. As I was asking my parents what they wanted for lunch, since they don't speak English very well, the server was rude, made abrupt comments and even went as far as sitting down with other guests at a nearby table to discuss how she had to wait for us to place our order. As if we were a burden to her and her day. I have never experienced such horrible service and blatant racism at this location. This is a really nicely decorated diner. The food was terrible. I had eggs, bacon, home fries, and rye toast. The eggs and toast were the only things cooked to order. The eggs still came out room temperature. With the rye, it was 1 piece of toast and 1 piece of bread. The bacon and home fries were both requested "well done", neither came as such and it was obvious they had been prepared much earlier. I asked for tabasco, was told yes, they had tabasco, and was then brought cholula. I like both, I don't think the server knew they are different products. The coffee was good. The service was not good. Friendly, perhaps. Not good. A 1/4 through our meal the server dropped off the check without asking if we needed anything else. When we were finishing up, she asked if she could get us anything else. Also, it wasn't very busy and servers were just standing around, a couple with noticeable scowls. First visit and likely the last. Caesar side salad had a funky taste. I am pretty sure it had gone bad because it was sour. The 3 small croutons were definitely fried in oil to a crisp. No parmesan cheese was on the salad. The turkey in the turkey/veggie omelet was not edible. Also ordered chicken fingers. 4 chicken fingers that were clearly a restaurant depot product and mediocre at best was the only edible item. Any fast food would of been better. Service was not good and I am pretty forgiving. However, when you can't get a refill on soda and you leave with an empty glass... you have been failed. Ohh almost forgot... the coleslaw was terrible. The Montville Diner is somewhat of your typical NJ diner, falling somewhere in the middle of the pack. Like most NJ diners, the menu is voluminous, spanning breakfast to dinner, and all things in between. I have found that the safest bet (regardless of the time of day) are the breakfast options. I always give very specific instructions on how I want things cooked (e.g., poached eggs soft, bacon extra crispy, home fries well done, rye toast dry w/ butter and jelly on the side - I said I was specific didn't I?), and almost without fail the server delivers exactly what I ordered the way I ordered it, which is not the case with all diners (or restaurants generally, for that matter). Many of the servers have been there for years, which, on the one hand can lead to consistency, and on the other hand can lead to some zombie-like, apathetic waiters/waitresses. In this case, it's a bit of both. I've never had an amazing experience at the Montville Diner (is it possible at any diner?), but then again, I've rarely had a bad experience there. My sisters family like to take the kids here...It's an older building but it's huge. They sat us right away and had high chairs for the kids. Our waitress was very nice and did a good job. Free soda refills (one of my husband's pet peeves about some diners is that they charge for refills; not so here.) Coffee was passable. I lived in Montville for 4 years before relocating to South Florida. Better than average diner. Nothing super great, nothing super bad. Pretty darn consistent. I only had one negative experience here. I ordered an ice tea with my meal, and for whatever reason after a few refills, when I got the check they charged me for every refill. After asking for the manager, I got my check reduced. The food is better than the personalities of the wait staff. Been here about 40+ times, and never had anyone serve me that had any type of personality. But the food is good, and for a diner, what more can you ask.
