I have been going to the Montville Diner for many years. The staff knows me when I walk in the door. The service is always good, however, in the last year I feel the food has gone down hill. Not worth the time. We had breakfast. My waffle with strawberries was flavorless and undertone with only one lonely sliced strawberry. My husband's pancakes were also flavorless and the sausage was dried out, overcooked and not much flavor. Our waitress greeted us very nicely and our food came out very quickly, but no one ever offered refills for our tea and coffee. Certainly not worth the price. I picked up food last night and was really disappointed with both, the quality of the food and the service. I got a salad and asked to substitute the nuts & cheese with strawberries when placing my order. When I arrived to pick up my food, I was told the strawberries were an extra $2.50 and since the salad was already made, there was nothing I could do and had to pay the additional (ridiculous) charge. There were about 8 strawberries, but some were not ripe. I paid $17 for a salad that was not even big or good. My 2 friends each got sandwiches and only ate half and picked at their fries because none of it was very good. I will never return. read more

Delicious food! There is such a warm and friendly environment and the staff is always so pleasant. I come here at least a week with my family and we are never disappointed! I am always pleasantly surprised with whatever I order. And don't even get me started on their pumpkin pancakes! Something has happened to this Diner and is isn't good. We won't be back, unless we hear from people they changed and we should try again. Came into an empty restaurant at 6:30 this evening. The server was new and hadn't been taught how to do his job very well. He didn't know the menu, he didn't know the specials, he cleared the table of drinks that hadn't been finished. Just not well-trained and it was painfully obvious. The food was meh, nothing worth returning for. The high light was the Turkey on the club sandwich was moist and tender and the french fries were perfectly cooked. Everyone else in our party of 4 had okay meals. The bread that was used in the very salty French onion soup was so stale it couldn't be cut with the soup spoon. The meat they serve as a diner staple, Cheese Burger deluxe was the cheapest cut of meat and totally wasn't worth the price. The gravy topping the Turkey dinner should have been called soup it was so thin and watery. Overall 2 stars is a fair rating for a place that doesn't seem to care. If they don't need to or try to keep their customers, I could see an empty business here in the future. read more

The man who said this is the best diner in New Jersey made me laugh so hard I felt like throwing myself in front of a bus. Maybe yeaaaaars ago this was a good diner, but get serious. For breakfast, you probably have your best shot cause there is less to screw up. Lunch 50/50 and by the time you get to dinner, well, you know where this is going. I had the soup which basically was a cup of salt. (No intention to insult salt). Marilyn is a terrific waitress, and has always been. That's why I give this 2 stars, instead of one. Saturday night every other place is extremely business so we came here . Only a handful of people. When I say worst food I've ever eaten I'm not exaggerating.. French onion soup can't even tell you what it tasted like .. pasta was so doughy left a bad taste in my mouth, my sisters pot roast was just 3 pieces of meat on a plate and it looked old, my brother in laws hamburger looked like a charred piece of cardboard.. Waitress barely spoke to us, and when she did she was condescending and rude. When we got our food, they forgot to put vegetables on the chicken special, and my panini with fries was hard and cold. By the time the waitress finally came to our table, me and my hubby had already finished his chicken. I told the waitress that my panini was bad (I left it at the edge of the table, barely touched), but she wouldn't take it off of the check. Just told us, "ohh. Here's the check." Met a friend for lunch. This place used to be great. We ordered portobello salads and they were small. I got shrimp on mine and it was only 4 shrimp. The salad was just wimpy looking. The only good thing about this diner is Marilyn, the waitress. She tries so hard to make everything right but one of the owners, Steve Mikelis, is so unbelievably rude as to turn you off completely. We have been coming to this diner for over 20 years, long before the Milelis brothers owned it. Dimetri is very kind and thoughtful, gracious as a host. Steve, on the other hand, has now been so rude that we will probably never return. He basically told us that we were wasting his time in coming there and that we should frequent other diners. The food has gotten progressively worse and the desserts are not even made there but brought in from the outside. Tonight was the ultimate in rudeness from Steve and not only will we not return, we will tell all our friends (and we have lots who live in Montville) to boycott this diner. read more

Went there last night (11/30/14) around 7:30PM. There were 3 other tables there when I got there. I ordered a cheeseburger deluxe a root beer and had apple pie for dessert. The fries were the best part of the meal. My burger was undercooked, they laid the burger bun on sopping wet lettuce so the bottom bun basically disintegrated as I ate. There was no real flavor to the burger. The apple pie was horrendous. They didn't bother to warm it at all so it was ice cold, the crust tasted stale but the bottom tasted undercooked. Happen to be in the area and stopped in for a late breakfast. I will not be back. The waitress couldn't be bothered to write my order down so the first trick was hoping her memory didn't fail. My omelette was served cold. The bacon was literally inedible-looked like it had been cooked days ago and reheated in microwave. It literally crumbled to bits when picked up a strip. The toast and way too much GREASE on the bread. There is no way that was butter. The waitress with the failing memory never came back to ask if anything was needed or how things were---I guess she's checking tables from memory too. Worst experience at a diner EVER. What panini features cold cheese? My fiance ordered falafel. I've lived all over the world and this was bad. Really bad. The waitress was rude and surly. They served me a bloody mary and I know there was no alcohol in it. You know that last sip thats all Vodka? What a decline! I used to live in the area and it was a "no thrills" regular diner. I was in the area and wanted some eggs and coffee. What a mistake. Food was meh, home fries were not well done although requested so, and they tasted like they have been sitting for a while. I asked to substitute a toast for an English muffin with a little bit of cream cheese on the side. There was some kind of commotion in the kitchen over cream cheese, because I got it 5 minutes after I got my English muffin, so when I got it, I was almost done with my food. They used to charge me $1 extra, no big deal. But when the server dropped off the check I found out they charged me $2.30 extra for substitution, because they rang up a "bagel" and "cream cheese" separate charges. When I told the "manager" in the front that they should warn about these ridiculous extra charges, her response was "if we tell customers they price for extra stuff, then they will not order". Damn right, lady! I will never be back, should have gone to Original Pancake House instead, at least I know up front that they are expensive, but they provide both quality service and food. The server was slow and I had to ask for everything from coffee refill to napkins. There are too many good places around to waste your time and money here. read more

I have been coming to Montville Diner for 10 years now and I have not a single complaint about this diner; if not the best diner on Route 46. The service is unbeatable and the food is awesome. Average wait times for appetizers are under 15 mins, which in this industry is very good. My favorite waiter is Vanessa, she is PHENOMENAL. Extremely nice and friendly. She always takes care of my friends, family, and ofcourse me. I couldn't look at this diner the same if she was gone. I have to say I'm in the market for a new Diner to go to and this will not be the one. The waitress who waited on us could not even crack a smile. There were hardly any customers in the diner and she managed to forget my husband's salad with his order. He ordered a beef dish, medium-rare and it came out well done. The food did not taste good at all, it was like it had no flavor. I ordered my potatoes well done and they were barely cooked. The waitress made the hostess / manager aware of what was going on and she could not even be bothered to come to the table to apologize for or acknowledge all of the mistakes. Another time I went and ordered the breaded chicken tender basket. The best part of the meal was the ranch.
