Dining Room Review! I recently visited Moody Tongue to celebrate an anniversary. This spot is half a bar/restaurant with an a la carte food menu, housemade beer, and full service bar. On the other side, is a 1 Michelin Star dining experience. Moody Tongue is the first Michelin ranked brewery and even offers a beer pairing with their prefixed menu. The inside is moody with dark wood finishes, black accents, and elegant artwork & feature lighting. Upon entering, one checks in at the first floor host stand. A server brings you upstairs to the dining area. There is a mixture of two and four tops in the space and our table had a handwritten note congratulating us on our anniversary. Our seat allowed both of us to have a view of the kitchen window to watch the chefs prep courses. There were 3-4 servers that serviced the entire dining room and rotated in presenting dishes. They started with warm towelettes to wash your hands which was a nice touch. Service level throughout was impeccable with water refills, explaining the menu, delightful demeanor, fresh silverware per course, and wiping the table clean from anything that dropped. This was certainly one of the best hospitality levels at a one star I've experienced. Dinner was 12 courses including the amuse-bouche and final treats. There was not one course that didn't offer bright, fresh flavors. The presentation of plates were beautiful from every angle. It's hard to pick any top dish as everything was unique and special in their own way; but I am still thinking about the Crab Bite, Sablefish, and Pasta Course. After dinner, each guest got a complimentary bag full of goodies to enjoy at home. What a beautiful final touch! Moody Tongue as a whole far exceeded my expectations. The space is absolutely beautiful, and you immediately know you're in for a true fine dining experience (but in an approachable, welcoming way). The tasting menu is honestly the first time I've ever experienced a menu where every single item was absolutely perfect. It's been months since I went, but I can still remember specific items and flavors and immediately start drooling. We did the beer pairing and I loved my classic while my sours loving family loved the reserve pairing. All in all, such an unforgettable experience that felt truly special from the moment we sat down, to when we left with an actual gift bag with treats and a copy of the incredible menu we'd just experienced. This establishment is outstanding and worth visiting. The beers were some of the best and original microbrews that I've tasted. The food was outstanding on every level. The service was first class all the way and the setting is so damn comfortable with an excellent bar. My son and I have a long tradition of dining out before we go to a concert. The concert on this occasion was Rush. We've eaten and drank at some of Chicago's finest and this is in the top 5. Moody Tongue is Michelin rated and it shows in every aspect. Had a reservation and glad I did because it gets crowded pretty quickly. The service was friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. Our waiter answered all our questions without judgment and offered insight as to what we might like. We had to get some bread to start, but decided to try some of the seasonal oysters. The bread was a good start, and the oysters were something I'd skip next time. Not much brine or flavor. The softshell crab was fried to perfection and paired with broccolini. Definitely an item I'd order again. The 12 layer German chocolate cake is a hallmark of Moody Tongue so don't skip it. Certainly shareable but not as big as you would imagine. The beer list always has plenty to choose from and I'm a sucker for anything that has some Asian influences like the toasted rice lager or lychee IPA. We came to Moody Tongue for our 10 year wedding anniversary celebration and it was an absolute time! We sat at the bar and Zack took excellent care of us -- he went above and beyond and made our celebration very special. He started us off with Pilsner bubbles in champagne flutes that was on the house, and then explained the concept of the bar/restaurant to us. We have never been to a restaurant that specializes in craft beer pairings with Michelin star dishes so the concept really intrigued us. We ordered the Moody Tongue Caesar salad, Soft Shell Crab, Duck Breast, and American Wagyu Filet. Everything was absolutely delicious!! We can't remember the last time that every single dish hit! And the beer pairings that Zack paired were phenomenal. Some standouts included the Toasted Rice lager and a hoppy Cherry beer which almost tastes like a Lambrusco. We ended off the meal with a 12 Layer German Chocolate Cake and Zack paired dessert with two spirit forward cocktails which accompanied the cake perfectly. All in all, we had a wonderful time celebrating our anniversary here and we even plan to bring our friends back the next time we're in town. Moody Tongue is tucked away in a pretty hidden area, so parking can be a bit tricky. That said, once inside, the ambiance is great. It feels like an upscale brewery with a cozy but refined vibe. Portions are on the smaller side, but the flavors were thoughtful and well executed for the most part. The crab angel hair pasta was creamy and comforting, with a decent amount of crab throughout. The foie gras and French toast was the standout dish. The milk bread was incredibly soft and paired beautifully with the rich foie gras, and the orange marmalade added the perfect sweet, bright balance. The Hokkaido sea scallop was just okay, a little fishy. The wagyu beef was also fine but not particularly memorable compared to the other dishes. I highly recommend getting the beer flight to sample a few brews alongside your meal. Service was smooth and the food came out at a nice, steady pace. We were meeting a group of people here and all of us had such a good time. I feel like most breweries that I go to are more loud and bright but Moody Tongue intimate. They have dim lights and it's very spacious so I felt like we had a lot of privacy. The table split the charcuterie board and we loved it. There were a nice variety of cheese. Some charcuterie boards at restaurants tend to be more on the plain side. I could not decide what beer to order so I went with a flight of 3 different beers. As an avid traveler and craft beer lover, the world's first Michelin-Starred Brewery has been on my list to check out the next time I was in Chicago. It's another hard reservation to grab but we were able to get some seats in the bar area and order off their à la carte menu. I started things off with a beer flight by getting the Kölsch, Summer Saison, and Oktoberfest -- the perfect start before diving into some amazing food. We started with Burrata (focaccia, roasted garlic purée, wort honey, truffle salt) and Fried Soft Shell Crab (charred lime aioli, peri peri sauce, rapini, XO sauce). Both beautifully presented and tasted amazing. Then for the main attraction we shared the 22oz Dry-Aged Cowgirl Ribeye with black truffle beef demi, beef fat carrots, potato kugel, and cultured cream. Decided to finally visit this brewery in the South Loop and wow what an experience. This place is deceiving from the outside, but the dark interior and the exposed wood gives it an intimate and moody vibe. We decided to only grab a few flights and light bites and they didn't disappoint. The burrata had the perfect texture paired with the heirloom tomatoes and the fluffiness of the focaccia. It was paired with flaky sea salt and wort infused honey. The oysters were divine. Some of the best ones I've had in Chicago. I'd definitely come back for full service. The king crab set the tone -- fresh, balanced, and a perfect opening. Then came the ocean trout, which was honestly unbelievable -- delicate, silky, and bursting with layers of flavor that kept unfolding with every bite. By the time the Australian wagyu arrived, I knew this was going to be a meal I'd never forget. That wagyu alone made my entire day -- tender, rich, and so perfectly prepared it practically melted the moment it touched the tongue. The ambience was also outstanding. I dined upstairs at The Bar for a la carte menu. -oysters $4 each: great! Loved it with the sauce it came with -Spanish Octopus $24: it was ok -Bussan crab angel hair pasta $24: it was good.. not sure if I'd get it again. It was nice and creamy; I wish crab meat was more meaty & chunky. -seared Hudson valley foie gras $22: came with pancakes. It was an interesting combo; something different. It was a nice balance to the meal that complemented different flavors -whole fish: sooo good! I was told chef switch up the styles every now and then. I came here for a pre Valentine's Day dinner with my fiancé. We did the brewery tour beforehand and I very much enjoyed it. The owner Jared who is also the brewmaster was very knowledgable and answered any questions that we had. I also got to sample a few beers, one of which had not been released yet. It was indeed truly a great mix of champagne(taste) and beer. Nothing like I have ever tried before. I have to give honorable mention to the truffle popcorn that we snacked on while drinking the beers. It was delicious! Now on to the food; I had a very tender medium well Wagyu steak. It was so juicy and practically melted in your mouth. It was served with beets and we ordered truffles to put on top. I tried quite a few beers but my favorite was the lychee IPA. Visited Chicago for this 1 Michelin starred brewery, and I was completely blown away by both the drinks and the food! We ordered a few of their seasonal flights - one with their dark beers (which I much preferred to their light beers) and everything was delicious! We ordered the hamachi tartare (incredible!), foie gras and French toast (adorable and delicious!), "confit" cauliflower (ended up being my favorite entree), and the braised Sakura pork shank (fell off the bone and paired so well with the cauliflower). We started off with the Little Gem Salad and Pork Pave. The salad was crazy salty and severely over dressed. The pork pave, looks great on paper, looks great on the plate but is blah to say the least. The salsa verde and black beans offered nothing to the dish as they were flavorless. After a 40 minute wait for our entrees they finally arrived and again they were okay. Lions Main mushroom with mole had flavor but ran very dry. As same for the chicken ballentine, dry. In both entrees the sauce were extremely thick, could have used some thinning out in my opinion. German Chocolate cake to finish is as good as they say. Huge piece! Moist and hits all the notes. In all honesty, I don't drink or like beer so I really can't comment on the beer, but I did have a Rosé wine and it was very crisp and cool on such a hot day. I also paired the wine with the burrata which was really incredible! Our waiter was incredibly knowledgeable and explained how the bread with the burrata and honey was made from the yeast from the brewery. He was very kind and attentive. Holy moley-how have we lived in south loop for 5 years and just now dined here?! My husband and I had a date night yesterday at Moody Tongue. I am so glad we ended up here! We sat at the bar and ordered A La carte. We were able to get a reservation for the bar the same day. I think we will come back again to try their dinner services. I am not usually a beer person, but their beers were great!! You can order a flight for less than $13! I ordered the mosaic saison, juiced lychee IPA, and hazy orange pineapple. And then later in the night me and my husband shared a nitro caramelized chocolate churro porter. For the meal we ordered the beet and burrata to start. And the I ordered the Prime NY strip, it was booked to perfection and the sides were spectacular. The potatoes au gratin were so delish. Very big portion served! How has Moody Tongue fallen under my radar for so long?? My husband brought me here tonight for my birthday after trying it a few weeks ago for a work dinner and to say "I am impressed" is an understatement. Having a very small infant at home, we opted for the earliest reservation of 4:30pm when they open. We were informed once seated however that the kitchen doesn't open until 5. As hungry as I was and ready to get started, I will say we just used the extra time to plan our attack on the menu...but just in case anyone else is trying to get in early to eat, there you go. The ambience is how I would describe as...Moody? Low lighting and a cool fireplace make it a cozy vibe. We were seated in the bar area at a high top and our server greeted us with a birthday drink on the house. I know Moody Tongue is a brewery and has loads of cool drinks to sample, but I was here for the food! We started off with the Guajillo Braised Short Ribs (which were only $22?!) These were amazing! Fall apart, juicy and so flavorful! The chimichuri mashed potatoes were a perfect pairing of this dish. We also had the Mushroom & Ricotta Tortellini which was so much better than I expected! This is the most elevated pasta dish I ever had. Parmesan, Dash, Spigarello...I don't know what 2 out of 3 of those ingredients are but they are amazing! To round off the starters we also had the Seared Huson Valley Foie Gras. This was a surprise! So many elements on the plate that combined make the perfect sweet/savory bite. I could have licked the plate clean (I actually did...a little bit...no one saw I swear). For entrees, we had the Hokkaido Sea Scallops with Creamy Lobster Orzo..Holy S*IT - please get these. The orzo had nice chunks of lobster and the peas added a perfect freshness to the dish. I could eat that every single day of my life. We also got the Prime New York Strip that came with a potato au gratin and seasonal veggies. They didn't even ask how we wanted the steak cooked, it comes out a perfect med rare which I wouldn't accept any other way. The Black Truffle Demi glaze was so savory and yet still pretty light. For dessert we had the apple crumble and it was not what I was expecting! This is fancyyyy apple crumble. The cider sorbet was so fresh and I'm shocked that I haven't had anything similar before. The bite was perfect. If you think I enjoyed my dinner at Moody Tongue, you just might be right. If I could use a once in a lifetime Yelp golden ticket to give this dinner 10 stars I would! Not only because EVERYTHING was delicious but the value cannot be beat!! You're telling me this is a two Michelin star restaurant?! Have been back a few times now besides remembering to take pictures, ran a similar playbook with perfect results. Ordered a bunch of the starters and only one entree for the table to share. Best way to get a great taste of everything without over-ordering entrees or doing the pricier tasting menu. I still stand by the beer being potentially hit and miss. Most are very good and cool combinations of adjuncts, but some of the combinations are a bit esoteric and may not "work". Really like the stout series too in the winter. I won't review every dish, but overall I would say they all hit the mark. The combinations of flavors are really good and while every high end restaurant is going to serve heavier, richer food, I felt like Moody Tongue does a good job balancing out otherwise heavy meals with some lighter dishes too. The one I would call out from the most recent visit was the steak and the sauce on top of it was great. But the highlight of our most recent couple visits: dessert. The 20-layer chocolate cake is incredible. Get a slice and share it amongst the table or bring the majority of it home. It's heavy but oh so worth the price. It'll keep you fed for days. What a fantastic meal, space, and experience! Wow... I'm blown away by this one. Our server (Brian? I was a few drinks deep but I think this is right.) was phenomenal at his job! He personally curated the experience based on what we ordered, bringing out like items at the same time and pairing our drinks with our meal. We started with some cocktails, and my one comment about them is they are STRONG. This was the one negative, and for me it's not usually a negative. I loved my IPA and my follow up beers, perfect compliments for my dinner. We ordered a few oysters and our server warned us we were teasing ourselves... he was right. They were the best oysters I've ever had, plated beautifully, and accompanied by a delightful garlic sauce and a hot sauce. We ordered more right away! The fennel salad was a delight, I saw the description and had to have it. I love the Japanese influence this spot has and this dish is a perfect example of just that. Tortellini was another delicious bite, and more filling than it looks. Let's talk wagu. Yes, REAL A-5 wagu! Not that fake stuff 90% of restaurants are giving you. Magical in its purity, it's just the best beef you can get. Pairing it, in this case, with broccoli and squid ink to play up the Japanese aspect again, made for a masterfully plated and delectable dish. The short rib might be my favorite bite of the night. It's fall apart tender and all the extras really make the dish sing. I'd order 2 of these next time! Sea scallops were also delicious if just a bit less visually exciting. Less of a presentation with this one but great flavors all around. We finished with two over the top desserts, the chocolate cake and a seasonal apple dessert with miso butter! Pairing this with their coffee cake imperial stout was a killler end to the night. I left fully satisfied and slightly inebriated. The building has a lovely dark wood and iron interior that just oozes class, I could hang out here all day. When I come back for the whole fish I just might. I am definitely a beer girly so when I moved to Chicago and found out that there's a Michelin star brewery, I was very excited. It took us a bit of time to actually visit Moody Tongue only because they do serve their beers at some restaurants that we've been to. After hearing from our good friend how good the food at the bar was, we decided to spontaneously go to Moody Tongue on a Saturday night. There was only bar seating left so that was what we went with. I was a bit apprehensive of how that would be because usually bar seating is squishy and not very comfortable; however, the bar area is basically an entire dining room with dining tables surrounding a very spacious bar situation. I appreciated how they didn't really seat other parties next to each other at the bar which I thought was nice (until it got a little bit more crowded which is completely reasonable). Between two, we shared 6 4oz pours which allowed us to kinda have a flight and try a lot of different beers! My favorite were the juiced lychee and orange blossom. Because we already had early dinner, we ended up just ordering two appetizers and one entrée which was more than we needed to, but because we were already here, we thought why not. The burrata was pretty average.. I felt the focaccia was a bit too cake like in texture and too dense. I've definitely had better. At the end of the day, it is just foccacia and burrata so how good can it get? But it definitely has been better at other places. I did enjoy the szechuan salt though I'm not sure what made it szechuan because there was no kick to it really but it did add dimension for the perfect bite. Also the honey that came with the dish wasn't really giving anything. After having the burrata, my hopes weren't really too high for the pork belly or Hokkaido scallops; however, I'm glad I was wrong because wow.. just wow. The pork belly on top of the risotto was full of flavor and worked so well together. Portion looks small but it packs a punch. The creaminess of the risotto mixed with the salty fatty pork belly.. amazing. What could be better? The scallops!!! I don't normally order scallops but everything else in the entree list seemed too heavy so we went with scallops and that was the best choice. The scallops were seared perfectly and dressed in hazelnut mousse, capers, aioli, and hazelnuts. It sounds strange because when I think hazelnuts, I think nutella.. but it worked so well. The mousse consistency was light and fluffy and didn't take away from the scallops. There were also roasted potatoes and micro greens that helped add to the play on texture. At this point, we were stuffed but we couldn't leave without ordering the famous 12 layer German chocolate cake. Believe the hype because this cake is a chocolate cake lovers dream. It was fluffy and not too sweet and the coconut layer was very fresh. If I could describe this cake, I'd say it tastes just like the Samoas Girl Scout cookie (but way less sweet). Moody Tongue is definitely a great pick for date night, girls night out, or boys night out!! I really enjoy how they have the bar option for those who do not want to participate in the set menu. All I can say about Moody Tongue Brewing is WOW. This place has a super cool vibe. And the service was impeccable. Again I asked to have the ridiculous 3.5% hospitality fee removed so that I could give a bigger tip to our server. The beer was awesome. And the cocktails are fantastic. As for the food, we had 3 apps to share among the 4 of us. So good. And the entrees didn't disappoint either. I had the whole bronzino. If you don't mind working a little for your food, this dish will not disappoint. If you can get a reservation here, Moody Tongue should be high on your list of places to eat in Chicago. read more
