We ate at Moon's for breakfast two days in a row on a three-day trip to Chicago. The first morning, we shared a Jumpball, some grits, and a pancake. I thought the grits were pretty standard, the pancake was great (not too spongy, not too cakey, just enough butter) and the Jumpball was heaven on earth. It's a concoction of eggs, cheese, onions, and their fried potatoes -- crispy in some places, mushy and gooey in others, perfectly balanced. The second day I ordered my own Jumpball and had enough leftovers for breakfast on Day 3. Moon's will become a must on every future trip to Chicago! Some FYIs: They do take credit cards, just make sure to have them add in your tip before they run it. There is counter seating only and they do a ton of take-out and delivery business, although I think I'd rather eat it hot and in the company of the friendly staff. read more

Saw this place as I was driving home from a shift. Just the curbside appeal automatically caught my attention so me and my lady friend decided we had to go in. Upon entering we were greeted warmly by the staff. Once we sat down the women working the counter gave us the history of the place and told us we had to have the corned beef so we obliged. While waiting for the sandwiches the place came alive a regular there came in and started giving everyone a hard time. I couldn't keep myself together it was one of the most genuinely entertaining experiences of my life. Eventually I joined in on the fun and much to my surprise my remarks were welcomed. I felt like I was regular already. The sandwiches came out with my sweet and the ladies lemonade and we knew why this place had been around for so long. Overrated!! Inside, it's a really busy diner that's probably never been updated since the 40's with a mixed bag of diners and lots of regulars. We all got sandwiches and everyone came to the same conclusion:: Great Corned Beef and Roast Beef but the rest of Condiments on sandwich really ruined it! Cheap Mustard that tastes like that crap from Aldi and crappy lettuce & tomato? Bread was very marginal and the price for a Roast Beef Sandwich and a can of RC is $8.50? You may have seen this place plenty of times out of the corner of your eye as you headed past the corner of Western & Madison on your way to the cool hangs up the road on Western or in Ukie Village. Don't be put off by the 'hood as you will miss out on some of the best classic diner food in Chicago. Great corned beef sandwiches, burgers, eggs and grits made by a fry cook who deserves the Spongebob golden spatula award. This place has some delicious breakfast. This particular day I had the pancakes. And I may say they are absolutely delicious. This is not a place I would dine in however, due the size, it is a very small space. But to run in and grab an order to go, it's perfect. The price is pretty cheap as well. I always thought this place was abandoned until one day, the new field manager brought me a breakfast sandwich. I bit into heaven masquerading as an egg, ham, and cheese union of near holy excellent and became a convert. This is definitely a take-out place as there is standing room only and the orders are turned out as quickly as they come in. I try to go here before any United Center event I attend. The food is awesome and in big portions. Meatloaf sandwich, rib tip sandwich, corned beef sandwich, you get the gist. The grits are awesome too (I don't even like grits- this is the only place I eat them at) I've never gone without being the only white person in there, but it makes no difference to me or them, so don't be afraid to stop by before a Bulls game. Had a late breakfast at MOONS. ordered a ham & cheese omelet with fried potatoes and raisin toast. The omelet was Bursting with American cheese and the ham off the bone was salty in a great way! The potatoes were great and i added onions and peppers with that. The raisin toast was slathered with real butter. My partner had the corned beef sandwich that can easily beat AP Deli and Manny's Deli it comes with a tiny bag of chip and a can of soda. The corned beef was freshly cut and the juices were bursting off the meat. Now the drawback: The place is a dive and needs a good sandblasting wash. The employees are quick and attentive. Boot leg movie guy still sells movies at a reasonable price. I do not recommend buying any jewelry from anyone in MOONS because it is FAKE! Free parking on street. I would hold off on any visit to the washroom you will think you were shipped back in time to the 1950'S. You can phone in order for pick up if you are one of those new DAINTY west siders who live in the overpriced condos near by. The neighborhood is changing, but I would close before dark also. However, they close before 5 pm, so, no Moon's for dinner. I have never been here, but I have had the food and I have to say is freaking amazing. They have the biggest corned beef sandwiches that I have ever seen in my life. My boyfriend has been ranting and raving about this place for years, so I decided to check them out. I got a corned beef plate, which consisted of a huge pile of tasty, well cooked corned beef (enough for two days), rye bread, salad, corn and mashed potatoes and gravy (the gravy is delish, they will put it over the entire plate, if you want). Its such a small place that if you blink you might miss it and drive past it twice. It gets very crowded very quickly and it closes early on weekdays, I believe around 2pm or 3pm, but it opens around 6am. read more

I stopped by here the other day after I heard they had a good corned beef sandwich. I had heard correctly. I'll start by saying that my rating is based on the food alone. If you pass by the building you will probably assume that is abandoned. And no, I am not joking, the place is a certifiable dump. Don't let that discourage you though. Anyways, the sandwich was huge, the corned beef was really really tender and flavorful and the fries were very tasty also. Prices were decent, I think my sandwich combo was around $8 and it was one of the most expensive on the menu. The folks that worked there were definitely interesting, I'm sure the place has some stories. Brought my family here for breakfast last week and found that the sandwiches were mainly a disappointment, particularly the corned beef hash that Meg tried (it's even circled with a big box on the left side of the menu, so if you are gonna promote the specialties, you better make them right!). But my vanilla order of pancakes, eggs and sausage was pretty good and you can get a ton of food here for $10. Atmosphere is key, but so is the wait; it's pretty small and takeout is a bigger deal here than the dine-in experience. I went to try this restaurant today because that's the only place that caught my eye when looking for a new corned beef place. I'm not usually in the area but today I was and pop in. It was very crowded today, a good sign. What turned me off was the service. The service could use a makeover stat! I ordered 2 sandwiches, nothing custom. I was waiting for 20 minutes and then I started getting frustrated. I asked 3 people if I can get an eta on my order. Not ONE person acknowledged me. They all heard me and even looked at me while I was talking but continued on like I said nothing at all. You don't ignore your customers. If you don't want questions, then find a better way to tell your customer. I wanted to just leave and come back which is why I was asking but nobody had the courtesy to even acknowledge me. Numbers were getting completed that came in after me. Imagine now, 'm really frustrated. Another customer was upset but she was actually in the wrong. I took up for the restaurant because it wasn't there fault. Right is right. My agitation was strictly about how I was ignored. Maybe they should tell people the wait time while they are ordering. Give the customer an option to wait, come back or don't order. My food was good and tasty, yes. I'm also about customer service. That's a huge deal for me. Finally a gentleman said he's taking care of my order. FINALLY! He was the only one to even care. That helped a little. Delivery or pick up is probably your best option. read more

Our new breakfast spot, indeed, and only two blocks from home! Plus they're on GrubHub so you can order for pick up or delivery. If you're going by on Western, you'll totally miss it as it's so non-descript. I dig the pancakes (especially since you can get 2 or 3 to an order, not waste food ((finally)) or chow down), the french toast my sweetheart got was really good, he gets eggs, potatoes, and lots of other stuff. And cheap too, wow! It's a small old school diner-type place with the melamine plates and plastic cups, counter seating only. Folks behind the counter were friendly and food was hot, fresh and fast. We took some of the dinners home to go for later, and mmm, I think we're going to stick to breakfast. They weren't bad, just not great. You get 1000 lbs of food, enough for at least 2-3 people per order. He got the corned beef dinner and wasn't fond. I had the turkey dinner which was deli sliced turkey tossed on the flattop. The mashed potatoes were a boxed mix, sadly. They do take credit cards and there seems to be some confusion between various websites about their hours. A great example of a "mom and pop" place! It's small, but cozy! The service is great and the food is fantastic! The breakfast options and the popular corned beef is fresh and delicious. The scrambled eggs are fluffy and so are the pancakes. The famous corned beef plate and sandwich is even better than the breakfast, and that is saying a lot. The waiting service is friendly and attentive. You can also see your food being prepared since the kitchen is right across from the seating area so you know that your food is being prepared right on the spot. The only small negatives doesn't have to do with the food, but more with the location. It is a small place so sometimes finding a space to dine in can be a problem, but nothing a little bit of waiting won't fix. Also, this place is almost always full so the waiting staff might take a minute or two to get to you. But this isn't really the waiting staff's fault and it tells a lot that this place is always full regardless of space. Honestly, if you want a great and cheap mom and pop restaurant to go to in Chicago, this is one of its hidden gems! read more

Went to Moon's for my first time today, I wasn't disappointed. The atmosphere is not unlike an old diner-dive which was very present. The staff was extremely busy but didn't rush a single customer, instead they were attentive, kind, and genuinely sweet. I ended up opting for the world famous corned beef sandwich. It was good. The meat was a little drier than what you'd get crock-potting it yourself. The bread was good, I think additional mustard, or switching to spicy brown mustard would really give this sandwich the flair it deserves. I will be back to try some other dishes and I'll update this review accordingly. read more
