Writing this review in tears. My husband and I would come here every year for our anniversary, I have taken so many close friends to this restaurant. I can't believe the fires have taken such a very special place that was a major contribution to my culinary experience. I will never forget the shoutout of this restaurant from rewatching Beverly Hills, 90210, all the Pear martinis, glasses of good red wine, steak and lobster tail that I've enjoyed here. This restaurant, the food, the people has been such a major contribution to my story and to me and my life and words could not express how thankful I am to have enjoyed so many amazing meals here in this restaurant. I normally don't give bad reviews because I don't want to hurt the business but this business needs to change its chefs taste bugs! The ambiance is nice, it does need a lot of renovation. The food was tolerable, for such a high end place you would expect at least one item that you ordered to have some nice taste. Both my husband and I ordered pasta based, mine was the lobster and crab linguine. Now when you have those three words on the menu it catches your eye and you start having a slobbery mouth because they all just sound amazing but I have never tasted anything more dull than that on the menu! Ew! I didn't even finish it I was just eating to be polite because I gotta say our waitress was super sweet. My husband ordered a beef pasta (don't recall the name) that already says a lot about how I feel. Again, tasteless. Well we looked at each other and said okay maybe to bright out day because we were celebrating some amazing news but the food killed it. We ordered caramelized banana crostata That does sound really good! But the banana was also tasteless, meaning the main ingredient was missing SUGAR! It was dulllllllllll but the leches ice cream was BOMB so definitely order the leches ice cream! Overall I would give it a 1 star but the service was nice and on top of their game! Been driving past this place along PCH for years and always said, "I want to eat there." So this year's birthday, FINALLY! And it was the perfect choice. Beautiful view, of course, right over the surfline. Lines of pelicans gliding by. The service was amazing. Milagros, our waitress, took such good care of us! She made us feel like personal guests, not just another table to attend to. Javier, the manager, came by to wish me a happy birthday and stayed for a chat. I'm sorry I didn't get the busboy's name but he was sharp, on the ball. Despite being a weekday, the place was busy and they were all hustling, but still managed to bring that welcoming, friendly touch, and didn't make us feel rushed at all. And when we left, the valet brought our car up as we were walking out the door: we didn't even have to tell him which one it was! He smiled at our surprise, wished us a good day, and tucked us in carefully. Oh, you already know from the 50 thousand pictures that the food is beautiful and you can guess it's delicious. We had the day's specials: local caught halibut with saffron couscous, and spinach pasta in cream sauce with scallops and shrimp. Both were marvelous, so we shared them: Mila brought us two extra plates to make that easy. Cocktails and sangria and lovely desserts (note: hazelnut ice cream!!) with a good strong cup of coffee at the end all just enhanced the happiness. Thank you for a lovely birthday, Moonshadows. My first time at Moonshadows and it won't be the last. It's definitely a place where you have to go as a bigger group so you can try multiple things. It looks dated from the inside but that's intentional. One of the partners said that 50% of patrons had given feedback that they wanted the decor to remain largely the same after the renovation. I can see why - nostalgia is a thing. I thought the food was very good. But because I was by myself, I only ordered the beet salad (very good) and the Cod as the main entre. The Cod was prepared with Asian flavors. It was a very large dish. One piece of Cod would have been more than enough. Can't wait to try more dishes. The staff was very friendly! read more

Came here for drinks and an early dinner . I sat at the bar and watched the football game while waiting for my group to arrive . The bartender was really cool and gave some great recommendations. When my group arrived we were seated immediately . Our waiter did an amazing job . My table was 8 adults and 4 children and we all received our meals hot and within minutes from each other . I ordered the steak and lobster and my steak was cooked to perfection! It literally melted in my mouth and I could cut it with a butter knife. Now let's talk about the ambiance.....huge windows so you are looking out at the ocean . Music playing but not too loudly . During the summer they have an outdoor patio . I finally came here for a sunset dinner after hearing about it for years from a friend. Got a reservation last minute and had a lovely dinner at a window with a view of the crashing waves! We ordered the Spicy Tuna Tartare which was absolutely the shining star of the meal. Pear salad was also quite tasty. I ordered the Miso Black Cod which was okay - the fish itself was cooked perfectly - nice and buttery - but for some reason it had a funny ammonia like taste? Could be due to the shiitake mushrooms? Strawberry Fields cocktail was so so tasty though! And The creme brûlée was fantastic! Our server was fairly attentive, nice ambiance, and valet parking is $12 (very reasonable). Came here for a birthday celebration with my twin brother and was very pleased with the service and experience there. We made a reservation 3 days prior and I was surprised they had available time slots because of the other restaurants being booked up. When arrived, the balcony was available but another group requested for it already so we were given the choice of getting it when the other party leaves! (They never left as there is no time limit there and they also wanted to enjoy the full sunset to night time there :( ) but we were able to snatch a table by the water and that was the second best option! The food was good. We ordered their fish of the day Chilean Sea bass with black rice and that was our favorite! Our server recommended the lobster spaghetti and that was good as well but we are not too big on lobster. *Come before sunset if you can so you can enjoy the transition to sunset. read more

Moonshadows is a great seafood spot right by the water making it a nice date spot! Parking: valet only. We paid $20 at the time but it's really the only option as street parking is almost impossible. Drinks: had the sangria and the pina colada. sangria was nice and fresh! The pina colada was a bit too chunky in the ice making it a tough drink to finish. Food: we had the fish and shrimp pasta. Both were good and tasty but definitely not memorable or worth going back for. Biggest disappointment was probably the oysters we ordered. For price you pay I expected better quality if not bigger sized oysters. Overall, I think you're paying a bit more as this spot is right on the water with great overall views. Having said that, the food isn't too amazing but it's still nevertheless a place you can go to for a date and take in the scenic views!! read more

This again is one of my favorite restaurants to visit! The food, service and view are just incredible. We came to celebrate my sister-in-law's birthday on 3-10-23 and our time was 9pm but they seated us early when we arrived. It was raining that night so we could not be outside on the balcony area. Instead we had a window seat to see the ocean waves up close. I ordered the Rib-Eye Steak which is incredibly good along with mashed potatoes. Our server was Johnny and he was awesome. This place is running a scam on multiple levels. I had a negative encounter with the hostess and I was also surprised by their "valet service". My friend and I decided to split the check, and at the end of the receipt there was the recommended tip percentages and the equivalent dollar amount next to it. I was about to put the recommended dollar amount for 20% tip, but at the last minute we noticed that the recommended dollar amount was double what the actual 20% tip would be for what we spent. We pointed this out to the hostess, as we thought it was important to let the restaurant know that it risked overcharging its patrons. She told us "you should always do your own math" and when we insisted that people referred to the stated tip amounts at the bottom, she asked us "are you from here or from outside?" which I fail to understand what that had to do with anything. A simple "sorry, I'll let the manager know", would have been appreciated. We felt as though we received passive aggressiveness for simply pointing out a mistake. In addition to this, the valet parking situation is ridiculous. When I arrived at the restaurant, I started to park in the small parking lot outside the restaurant, and we were immediately stopped by a valet employee, saying that we needed to use the valet service and that it was $10. I've been to countless restaurants all over the world, and usually, the valet service is offered when there are countless parking spaces or a large garage, where it makes sense for someone else to help park the car for you. At Moonshadows, the valet employee literally parked the car in the space in front of me, and then pulled out in front of me when it was time for me to leave. It seems like they are offering the valet service not to be helpful, but for a money grab. read more

This place brings back memories. It's been over a decade since the last time I came but the food and views are amazing. We were a part of 7 and seated on the patio. It was such a beautiful day it was perfect. The food was fresh and well seasoned. Our waitress was awesome and very kind. My only complaint was our order. There were a few people who ordered the clam chowder. It should have come out before or with the food but it didn't. We had to ask multiple times and only one of the 4 was served as we were finishing our meal. As we were about to cancel the other 3, that's when it finally came out. After we had finished lunch. I've been here a few times and I don't know why I haven't written a review yet. First off, this is my favorite PCH restaurant. Above Nobu and all of those guys as well. The atmosphere just feels more calm and not overly trendy. It's quiet and so peaceful. If it's just me and a friend I love to sit on the outside area overlooking the ocean. A vibe within itself. I went last Saturday with my mom while she was in town and we shared the oysters (Omg YUM definitely order) the burrata (I mean who doesn't love burrata over decadent heirloom tomatoes) and then lobster Caesar salad with no bacon. (SO good. I loved that the dressing wasn't overpowering and the perfect amount of lobster. Sometimes ceasar's come so drenched and this one was just right) Then we split the miso glazed Black Cod. We both agreed that the cod was perfect, again sometimes places will really drench it in the miso glaze and this one was just the right amount so that you were still able to enjoy the cod flavor as well. And last, (but honestly one of my all time favorites) the pumpkin tortellini... Don't even think, just order. I promise you won't be disappointed. Overall 10/10 per usual. Great wine list as well and our server was very pleasant. Will always be back. read more

Fantastic place to come and enjoy the beauty of Malibu (if weather is nice, which it is 90% of the time). I would recommend this place or lunch or early dinner so you can enjoy the view. Once it gets dark, obviously its harder to see especially if the fog rolls in. The lobster and crab linguine is what I tried for dinner and it was really good! I would say to give it over the top, Malibu experience- leave the lobster on the plate. I saw a few dishes on yelp with that presentation. When I ordered it just looked like a spaghetti dish. We also got crab legs for an appetizer and those were excellent!!!!! Fresh and sweet! 10/10! The drinks I was not a fan of. I tried 3 different types and they were all just ok. The environment is fantastic. It gives you a feel like you are sitting on an exotic island in the middle of no where. As far as the parking is concern, don't try just valet. Reservations is an absolute must! We came 10 minutes early and our table was not ready until our reservations time. I'm a little intimidated going to beachfront restaurants in Malibu because I'm not a regular and I've heard that only regulars really get good service. Well, that's definitely not the case here. The service was spot on the food was excellent and the view was the ocean what more can be said. I had a Chilean Seabass, which was really good with black rice and spinach, my wife had the salmon. The whole dining experience was well beyond what I thought we would get. I would definitely come back. For an oceanfront restaurant, the prices are reasonable.
