We stopped here for lunch on a weekday off from work, I got the tuna salad melt sandwich and my boyfriend got the pepperoni, chicken (and other stuff) calzone. My sandwich was good; good tuna salad. It was open-faced, though, so I had to use a fork and knife. It came with some melon, which was good, but the potato salad was nasty. It was kinda funky looking, and when I tasted it, it was nearly frozen, almost crunchy. So I only ate one bite. My boyfriend enjoyed his calzone a lot -- just be warned they are made to order (which is overall a good thing), but it took a long time for his order to come out. His came with a small "salad" that consisted of lettuce and diced tomatoes with dressing. Dressing was good, but salad a bit puny. It seems the main dishes are hits, but the sides -- misses. The pastries looked tempting, but we didn't get any. We sat outside, which was nice ... enjoyed the seating arrangement (we had our dog with us so had to find an outdoor spot). read more

Bad service, lids didn't fit. Staff was very unhelpful and rude kept leaving while we were in the middle of ordering. Got my coffee wrong. Not only that, I we were waiting for a half hour and asked when our simple omelet would be done to find out that they had forgotten about it. This was utterly disappointing and a waste of my money. Stopped in to grab some lunch on a recent Saturday and thought the pesto chicken salad sandwich sounded delicious, so we ordered two. It showed up on generic white bread which I would expect from a home, not a bakery. The chicken salad was greasy tasting and had almost no pesto flavor. The worst? Finding TONS of bone/gristle/cartilage in the chicken salad. It was so bad I couldn't finish even one half of my sandwich. My man chewed through and his plate was FULL of garbage when he was done. Poor guy was so hungry he felt the need to finish. We should have just walked away from it. And I should have demanded a refund of our sandwiches. Service was rude too - the women behind the counter seemed uninterested and lacked any cheer. Ridiculous. We won't be back. read more

Their breads are great! The sourdough is one of my favorites and their white bread is the best sandwich and grilled cheese bread around. Everything else is just okay. I would never go out of my way for any of their desserts, pastries or coffee but I've definitely bought all of these out of convenience. I had a hot breakfast here... I'm thinking they must be more of a pastry place? The potatoes were odd- I think undercooked- and the sausage was not great. The brioche french toast tasted great, but the whole thing came out kind of lukewarm, so it was thoroughly underwhelming. So much potential, but not executed well. I have been coming here for 17 years and the bakery has been here longer than that. It is true that often the waitstaff is not super friendly. That should be remedied, but since this has been a problem for years, it probably won't. It is a family run bakery and when one of the owners is present the service is great. So my guess is they have no idea how rude their waitstaff is. If that improved I would give it five stars. However your interaction with the staff is brief. The quality of the food is comparable with the best bakeries in Europe and better than almost all SF bakeries (Noe Valley Bakery is one of the few I can think of that is better). My kids have been lucky enough to come here since they were babies. Both still love decadent meringue mushrooms and custard danishes. Things that make this bakery especially wonderful: holidays. Exquisite gingerbread houses and specialty breads. Wonderful decorated cookies for Easter, Halloween etc. The wood burning oven that produces fantastic pizza and foccacia is also somewhat unique. The sitting area is very nice and I am grateful we have such a great place in Half Moon Bay. First off, the baked goods are awesome. Definitely no complain there. Great cookies and brownies. However, the lunch was super disappointing. First, super expensive for what it was. I paid $13 bucks for a salad with not a ton of lettuce. I believe it was a sample sized one. My husband has the tuna melt and it was open faced and it was too small to take up the entire plate. As far as taste, nothing exciting or worth the over priced meal. As far as service, meh. Counter people were nice, but it a long time for the food to come out (a half hour or so for salads and sandwiches?) and once it did, it was underwhelming and disappointing. Lots of unbussed tables and had to ask the counter twice to just clear plates. No one was really coming outside to check if tables needed to be cleared. In summary, come for baked goods, desserts. STAY AWAY. THEY DO NOT WANT YOU THERE 2 stars = I've experienced better quality pastries. Subtract 1 of those 2 stars for the beyond horrible and rude service. It seems as though the 3 ladies behind the counter went out of their way to be rude. The bakery was not busy at all and there were 3 people working behind the counter. I've been to places that have been packed and only 1 person working the counter so you would think with 3 people working behind a counter that has few customers they should be happy and easy going. Unfriendly counter staff and if you want water you have to put it in a tiny paper cup like they have in doctors' offices to take pills. It took almost 25 minutes for a pizza cooked in a supposedly wood-fired oven (those things normally take like 45 seconds) that did not come out like I ordered and it wasn't very good. Bathrooms are far away and through an unmarked door where you need a code to get in and you see lots of signs saying they are not for public use. We ran in here to escape the rain, the cold and the hail on a blustery winter day. Atmosphere was ok, but the place was pretty deserted. The adults in the group got coffee....a drip and a vanilla latte--which had to be returned for the vanilla since none was added the first time. Wrote it off a a simple mistake, until the 5 year old complained that her hot chocolate tasted like milk....and we went back yet again to ask for enough chocolate to flavor the drink. Not so good on the drinks. The 5 year old also had a chocolate mousse cup, complete with white chocolate spoon and chocolate cup. She liked it, but I think it was more for the novelty of the idea than the taste. Although it wasn't that large, she didn't finish and we brought the rest home. read more

Stumbled into this cafe after tide-pooling. Thought I'd just go in to get some coffee, and found scrumptious fruit tarts, enticing cakes, pastries and cookies. I had to taste the almond horn cookies, chocolate crinkle cookies, raspberry hats cookies.... All were so fresh and wonderfully done, excellent accompaniment with my coffee. This place has an authentic pizza oven, and makes the best calzone I've ever had. The portions are a little big, so you might want to share. They serve Numi brand tea, so you're guaranteed to have the most flavorful experience when it comes to tea. "Outdoor" seating is quite nice, while still being under a roof, but it is a nice open area to have one's treats from the bakery or hot entrees or tea. I like the HMB Moonside Bakery better than the San Mateo location. The Latin woman at the counter is very pleasant and friendly. Inside there are tables and seats, so you can dine-in for lunch, or chat with friends over cookies and milk. Try the palmiers and thumbprint cookies. The bagels are better than Noah's. read more

They have indoor and outdoor seatings, we choose indoor. There were flies everywhere. They were so friendly and wanted to eat with us. That's not the worst thing there. One of my favs! Cheap, quick, and delicious! I always order French Toast, and am never disappointed. The fresh, seasonal fruit is fantastic! My grandma gets the 1 egg combo with potatoes and toast. When you walk into Moonside it can be a bit crowded by the register, but after the line you get to order and they kindly hand you a number and deliever your food in minutes. You have your choice to eat indoors or outside. Both areas are great. Outside you can people (and dog, c'mon its HMB) watch. Inside there in a courtyard with a beautiful mural and cute little shops. This place is a hit or miss. Whip Cream is the real deal though. None of that canned stuff; they make it in house! A bit pricey, however. You could walk out of here with a small breakfast for $20 or maybe just a cookie for $3-$5. Depends on you. Their coffee is good; you have to be very specific in what you want (strong or mild, etc) - and this isn't really preferred. They like simple orders; the moment you start getting complicated, the moment it becomes a bit awkward for you. The ladies are NOT shy in letting you know you're just being too much. However, this is the only way you'd get your order the way you want it. I asked for the bathroom code while my Mom was ordering some bread and the lady behind the counter was cold and wouldn't give it to me until my Mom had paid. We got a vanilla cup cake, cinnamon crepe, carrot cake and 2 waters for $14 and to be honest the 2 water was the best thing there. The vanilla cupcake was overly dry and the frosting crumbled to pieces. The cinnamon crepe was nothing but just sugar and cinnamon. The carrot cake did not taste like carrot cake at all. When I reviewed my receipt and brought it to the cashiers attention, rather then receiving a refund, I was completely blown off.
