They had a few moon cookies when i was here-which I thought was cute. Had a mocha- the whipped cream is too die for- it's thick and you can tell it's freshly made. Plus I had a good laugh at a comic that was posted on the wall about gingerbread men. We dropped in for a quick snack before dinner. Mini chocolate croissant was tasty, fresh, with good chocolate flavor. Hazelnut macaron was crisp and not too chewy. There was plenty of filling, but a bit too buttery. Seemed expensive for 2 little snacks at $3.00. Cakes looked really scrumptious. The service is horrible. The staff is rude, which is a reflection of bad business owners. Low morale = bad customer service. My friend came from San Juan Bautista and I'm from StaCz. We went just to have breakfast. I had been before and those little minions were rude every time which I had put up. This time we got there and wanted to use the restroom. They said there was a code at the bottom of the receipt. I explained that we were going to have breakfast but needed the restroom first. We asked three people and they wouldn't budge. Came to this little bakery and ordered the pizza. Sometimes it's fun to drive to a place and not even look on Yelp for a recommendation. This was one of those instances sometimes it creates an unnecessary bias towards a place and sometimes gives me a certain expectation. The bakery was inside of a square. Inside this square (on a Saturday afternoon) we were greeted with a beautiful acoustic set of Irish folk music. There were also seating outdoors if you wanted to enjoy the beautiful outside weather. A few small tables scattered inside but the main things that you see are a big fire wood oven and pastries that were all over the place. I felt like I stepped into a nasty oasis. Maybe this was the baked goods version of willy wonkas chocolate factory. The pizza was delicious. The ingredients were very fresh. From the tender sausages, to the bits of bacon, to the fresh garden variety of veggies packed in my pizza. I loved it. My friend bought this little chocolate "mushroom" thing that I wish I remembered the name. It was delightful. How could I have missed this place all these years? Moonside Bakery & Cafe is quaint location in the heart of downtown Half Moon Bay. The outside is so misleading as I felt like I was by a courthouse. Once you walk in, a sinful rush hits as you lay your eyes on all the deserts temporarily protected by the glass, key word 'temporarily.' This isn't a bakery that has a fancy decor with ego driven pastry chefs walking around telling you why they're the best. It's the hometown next door feel and service that differentiates this place. I was torn with the carrot cake or the Devil's chocolate and even though it was Lent Season I couldn't help but order the Devil's Sinful Chocolate. OH NO!....But YUM YUM! They serve some decent coffee which isn't their own but not bad. I hope they decide to bring in Italy's finest in 'ILLY COFEE' or 'Cafe Vergnano 1882' as their coffee would put this place on a whole different level, but I'm sure it's not cost effective for management, darn it! Then again the cost of the deserts and the coffee was kind of pricey hence the four star instead of the five star rating. As I walked down the bakery to pick up my coffee and desert I noticed the beautiful indoor patio. I literally thought I was in a whole different country at that point as the patio provided a European ambiance. Besides the college/high school kids surfing the net on the computer, it truly felt like a very serene place to just hang out or go on a date with a significant other. It's places like this that definitely reminds me to never judge a place by it's initial cover. It's amazing what you find when you're willing to take a risk and stray away from your norm. My first visit here so limited input, but will likely return. After a long gorgeous walk along the coast, we wanted something healthy to eat for a late lunch. We were both drawn to the Tandoori Chicken salad and it was very good. Might even get it again. Reasonably priced, fresh, not overly dressed, with tender flavorful chicken, it came with a nice piece of pizza bread. The sandwiches looked great and were stacked high. The wood fired pizza also look awesome. Might be good for a takeout for the beach. Quick service, plenty of seats inside and out. read more

My boyfriend and I came down here on our Memorial Day jaunt down to HMB. He has a raging sweet tooth and I'd been here once before, so I figured it was the perfect first stop. I got the apple strudel, coffee, and two peanut butter cookies dipped in chocolate for the road. He got the cheese danish, a hazelnut/chocolate filled croissant, and a mocha. Overall, his choices were far superior than mine. The croissant was absolute perfection (what was I thinking not ordering chocolate?). I'm also not a big danish person, but his cheese danish filling was sweet and rich. As for my choices, the apple strudel was alright. It was missing something, maybe more cinnamon or nutmeg? The cookies were yum, and the coffee was excellent - strong but not bitter at all. Outdoor seating was a plus but the prices were a bit high. It's HMB though, so what did I expect? I will definitely come back to Moonside Bakery. Their artisan pizzas, sandwiches, and other savory dishes looked awesome, so I'll need to try those too! read more

Probably the best breakfast pizza I've ever had! Good crust, and the bacon was complimented by the choices of fresh peppers, onions, and tomatoes. A little pricey, but what's not in Half Moon Bay? This place doesn't feel how it used to. I came and found sandwich prices too high. Almost $20 for a sandwich. I couldn't buy thus. I still don't care for the self serve microwave and toasting. It would be nice if they would do it. The pastries are still delicious. Coffee is ok but not great. The everything bagel I had wasn't that good. I could get one that comes in a package from Starbucks and it will still taste better than the one here unfortunately. Too bad this place has too high of prices. Loved the freshness of the bakery. We ordered the TERIYAKI CHICKEN oven-grilled chicken, mushrooms and garlic , it was accented with fresh avocado (hey it's Cali) it was fresh and good, even the next day. As some crusts get soggy, not this one, it was just as fresh. Then we had the sandwich Teriyaki Chicken Breast With tomato, lettuce, red onion, jack cheese, avocado and creamy herb dressing in our own focaccia pocket. Again, having it with a freshly baked focaccia... (never use Sunbeam again).,... We enjoyed the warm vegetable soup, it was perfect since the temperature was a bit cool. To finish we enjoyed the crisp Chocolate Chip cookies, they were filled with tons of chocolate and the cookie was thin and buttery crisp.. I really hate to put down a local business, especially one that has been in this small town for years. I've only been here twice, first time I just walked in during this years Pumpkin festival and sadly didn't order anything. The 2nd time was this morning, when I decided to kill some time before dropping my sister off to school. We just ordered 2 hot chocolates, something quick and easy. I got to admit the pastries do look amazing. However, customer service was awful. The girl, probably high school aged? She didn't seem like she wanted to be there, when she asked for my name and handed the order ticket to the other young high school looking girl, she literally said "oh I don't know how to spell her name but it's what it sounds like" umm.. would it kill you to simply ask to spell it? The cookies were really nicely decorated, all Halloween themed. I wanted to order a cookie but seeing that there were at least 3 flies buzzing around the cookies and landing on various ones, I lost my appetite for them. Probably explains why my mom would rather go to the HMB bakery down the street and always told me to go there instead of here. Their hot chocolate was mediocre, I've had better at Starbucks, Petes and even at the Mezza Luna cafe by the harbor. But, my sister seemed to like it, she said she liked their whipped cream, which looked homemade. Would I try this place again? Maybe. But, probably not anytime soon. I'd love to give this local bakery another shot. But hopefully this time I'll try a pastry without seeing any flies! read more

I really want to love this place however; it's been more and more disappointing over the last few times I have been here. I was always intrigued by the name and look of the place and must have built up some sort of overly high expectations for this little bakery. I have been here a few times over the last few years and have tried a nice selection of little pastries and treats they have to offer. They certainly have a wide variety to choose from and enough to please just about any palette- all the way from a vast selection of cookies including pumpkin cookies (which were actually quite good), éclairs, and pumpkin cream cheese rolls (seasonal) crossaints, cheese cakes, biscotties, coconut macaroons ( one other that was actually pretty good), Danishes and a scrumptious looking breakfast menu as well as a cafe with your typical cafe selections. My most recent visit however was probably the most disappointing. I got one of there cream cheese Danishes to have for the next morning, which was $2.75 not bad however, I decided to take a little bite just to taste to see if it measured up to the look and once again Uhhh... the crust was near hard as a rock. Half way home I almost regretted buying it but then again it was only $2.75 so no big deal right. So the next morning after taking it out of the fridge to give it another shot once again blahh......That had to have had the hardest Danish crust I have ever tasted and the cream cheese was nothing spectacular either. They say they bake it fresh daily but by the look and taste of a few things I am beginning to doubt that. Like I said I really want to love this place, however I have had more disappointments than memorable ones. Not to mention the last few times I have been here the place has looked a little dirty and dreary...not to mention the carless, poor customer service. Gayle and I stopped in here for coffee and a nosh two Saturdays ago as we were heading home from the Coast. Both of thought the coffee was good and strong. Gayle's chocolate chip cookie and my apple strudel were also both delicious. However, the counter service left much to be desired. I don't like giving negative reviews. There are often redeeming qualities to any place. But I'm aggravated. Never been to Half Moon Bay prior to this visit. Great town! Pros: food is pretty good & reasonably priced. I would eat here again except..... Con's: what the HELL is up with the scary eye browed biatch behind the counter?!?!?!?!?! Obviously customer service is not in her vocabulary; she was surly, poor attitude, acts like she's doing us a favor by taking our order at the counter, I tell her we'd never been there before (obviously, you order and pay, take a number on a stand and they will rudely drop it off at your table). We drop $48 for 4 breakfasts, coffees and a muffin and we are treated like dog poop on a shoe with the GALL to charge .50 for coffee refills!! The mugs are far smaller than you get in other places and that just added insult to injury. I also shared another review that there were people behind us in the small line, practically shoving us aside to pay for a take out order. Appears to be locals... Not sure what that was about. I rely on yelp quite a bit. I hope the owner of this place takes heed about negative feedback and does something about it. They may not even realize they are losing or going to lose business if that sh*t keeps up. Its unnecessary!! read more

The baked goods are as fantastic as ever! Recommend them! But the staff... where do the owners find these people? No greeting, almost never a smile or thank you. In fact they are downright unfriendly which is weird for Half Moon Bay. Other customers were standing outside and talking about it. Dear owners - while your staff is efficient and your products (at least bakery-wise) are fantastic I'd suggest a half hour training for your staff which includes a smile and greeting and treating the customer like they are appreciated. A thank you for visiting at the end. These are basic things . Sadly I had to downgrade my review because of it. Owners: wake up and read the reviews... your staff is rude. It's going to cost you. Lunch was OK. Friend and I shared a Napoli pizza (parmesan and basil, $13). Tasted amazing for the first 5 minutes, hot with the flavors popping. As it cooled it was pretty much a regular cheese pizza that could have been from anywhere. Overall, it's decent. I had the most delish custard danish from Mooside today, it was sweet and flaky I had crumbs all over me and my car. I also ordered a chewy chocolate cookie and it was totally chewy I LOVE that. But I saved the rest for later and because the inside of my car was about 120 degrees it pretty much dried up the chewiness - but I still ate it! :) I am not ashamed! I also ordered a hot chocolate (I don't do caffine) and it was the worst hot chocolate ever! If was powder form and I am not a syrup snob or anything but it didn't have very much coco flavor or sugar. If it wasn't scorching hot I could have tasted it in the shop at added a couple of tablespoons of sweetner! That kinda sucked! I have bought a fruit tart here for a dinner party and it was great., a chicken pesto sandwich with real nice big pieces of chicken and it was very good, they also have very nice cookies too. We dropped in for breakfast around 7:45 am on one of the Pumpkin Festival Days, so I was ready to give any rushed/semibad service I received some leeway. But this place flat-out sucked. Why? 1. The service was terrible. I ordered a breakfast platter - and, after reading the menu, which advertised the eggs as "cooked any style," I asked for sunny-side-up. The girl taking my order informed me that "the cook wouldn't do them that way since they were expecting to be busy." Um, ok... well wtf option do I have and why the hell are you advertising "eggs ANY STYLE?" My mom then requested that her bacon be cooked crisp and the girl rudely says, "I'll see what I can do." Like it's such a hassle for these people to make our meals to-order. 2. They ripped us off by neglecting to bring out all the toast we ordered. We were supposed to get an order of toast with each of our three meals, in addition to an extra order of toast on the side. Apparently, they thought if they brought out all of our orders of toast in a single basket, we wouldn't notice. 3. The food was bland and bordered on disgusting. Nothing special, which one might expect from the prices we paid... 4. The prices were outrageous. Nearly $50 for 3 "eggs/potatoes/bacon/toast" meals (very small portions), a side order of toast (2 slices), a side of bacon, a coffee (plain drip), 1 16 oz orange juice, 1 8 oz orange juice, and a can of soda. They have a wider selection than Half Moon Bay Bakery: croissants, scones, foccacia, cookies, mousse cakes. It's a larger space than HMB Bakery. The mousse cakes look quite appetizing, especially the pumpkin mousse cake with Halloween decorations. The vanilla cupcake ($2) was better than I expected. Tender cake, hard & thin white chocolate shell, Halloween sprinkles, and a plastic witch cupcake topper. Not fancy but different from the usual buttercream frosting. I liked the white chocolate coating and the plastic witch topper of course. They had quite the selection of Halloween cookies. The meringue ghosts were adorable. I had the fondant Jack O'Lantern cookie, a sandwich cookie with butter cookies with chocolate fondant filling. It didn't really taste like anything (but it was very cute). They also serve breakfast items such as omelettes, eggs, waffles, pancakes and breakfast pizzas. Their outdoor tables seem perpetually popular. read more

I dropped by this little bakery for an afternoon snack. This place is a bit confusing, none of the pastries are marked with what they are and how much they are. I had to ask the woman at the cashier to identify several pastries for me. We got two cups of coffee and some pastries and the total came out to be 23 dollars. When I looked at the receipt, it turns out a few of the items we purchased was almost 5 dollars. I did enjoy my hazelnut ring, but I think overall the pastries were overpriced and the staff was not friendly. read more

I really wanted to like this place, based on the cute name and cute location in HMB. But overall, I was disappointed with these really overpriced generic sandwiches (about $10/sandwich, although they did come with a side of potato salad with undercooked potatoes and some cut up honeydew) that were not made according to the description on the menu (missing ingredients, surprise substituted ingredients). They also messed up our order (my friend asked for no onions, but they didn't put onions on any of our sandwiches; I asked for no mayo, but I also got no pesto spread). I also heard the guy in front of me say something about a $4 donut. Um, no thanks!! Definitely won't be going back. read more
