Joe and his crew are super friendly and helpful and have never failed to address any issue I have had with my moped. They will be as quick as they can, but they can get pretty busy so if it is a time-sensitive issue call ahead and ask if they will have time to take a look that day. this place sucks. They take reservations and take your money only to tell you when you get there that they don't have enough mopeds for you. Then in order to get a refund you have to wait days to get any money back. Forget about the fact that we are on vacation and have limited funds, it is just poor customer service. I have been looking into purchasing a new moped for the new college semester coming up. My research brings me to the conclusion that there is something fishy going on with this company.... When i asked where this moped is manufactured i was told that the GTX is manufactured in Taiwan. I Looked online and found out what wholesale distributor sells the GTX.... And BEHOLD! they are Made in China.....By a manufacturer named "Qingqi Group Ningbo Rhon Motorcycle Co" I was also told that these bikes (The GTX) were better than a SYM DD50.....Seriously that's a bit ridiculous. The Other shops I have been to have been honest about where their bikes come from, and i respect that......Lying about quality and origin of a bike is detestable. **Responce To Owner Comment** 1. If every Moped rental company uses your fabled GTX, how come Hawaiian Style Rentals uses specifically SYM mopeds? 2. If your engine parts are REALLY manufactured in Taiwan and then sent to China for final assembly this means that they are assembled with Chinese Quality control which is mediocre at best. 3. Even IF SYM manufactured their parts in China (which I really doubt) and then assembled them in Taiwan the quality of the parts chosen for assembly would be far superior than anything put together in China. 4. If SYM is only popular in its own domestic market and no where else in the world.... How come the information I have collected tells me that SYM is the best and most popular moped sold in Hawaii? 5. Bought a used moped from them about a year ago. The guy that sold it to me, said that it was his favorite used moped they had and, in fact, had been riding it as his own until they could sell it. Thinking it was in use by the sales person, and being sold by a repair shop, it would be a great purchase, I bought. BIG MISTAKE. Over the next 4 weeks I had to call these guys 5 times to get help starting the moped. To be fair, 1 of these 5 times, they were able to get it started at my apartment after about 5 minutes of trying to jump start it. The other 4 times, though, they had to take it in to their shop because the guys doing the pick ups couldn't get it started either. Interestingly enough, though, when I picked up the moped (usually 2-3 days after pickup) they would tell me: "we don't know... Started right up for us..." After the 5th time, I let them know I was done with the moped. They agreed to take back the moped and get me a new moped at MY EXPENSE. Fine... At least they took back the moped, right? But, another part of me felt like it was a great way to up sell... On the upside, no issues with the DD50 they sold me last year... Which is why they get 2 stars and not 1... But, I'll be sure to take my moped elsewhere when I do need service. read more

I bought a used moped from this place about a month ago. I love it because I use it for everything from commuting to work to checking the local surf breaks. Unfortunately, though, I've had a number of problems with the moped. This was expected, as a used moped is obviously more likely to have a few problems than a brand new one. That being said, Joe, the owner, has been awesome when it comes to fixing the problems. He truly just wants to see you get back on the road and is therefore super attentive and concerned about keeping you stoked with the product he has sold you. You can buy a used or brand new moped at countless places on Oahu. However, in terms of servicing that moped, I'm pretty sure that you're not going to get the immediate and professional response that Mopeds Direct offers. read more

The kick stand has come off of my moped on several different occasions now (due to speed humps!) and any time I need a part or something adjusted, I come here. Just purchased my sixth moped from Mopeds Direct. Been doing business with Joe for over 12 years. I would not go anyplace else. I like to get a new moped every two to three years and Mopeds Direct is the only place I'll do business with. Their "showroom" and business is small and low key. But don't let that fool you. Low overhead means lower prices for you and me. Their pricing is very competitive and there is no pressure to buy. I can't comment on their service per se, because every scooter I have ever bought from them never had a mechanical issue, just little things that they take care of in a few minutes. The only "problem" I have ever had is inventory. We live on a rock and it takes time for stuff to get here so you gotta be patient. That red 4 stroke you want might be a few weeks away....but the wait is worth it. This place focuses on selling mopeds and they do their job well. They are not really in the accessory business. In a city where moped companies come and go, this place has been around a long time and their customers are loyal. There is a reason for that. Frankly, there is no need to shop around, just go here first. You won't be disappointed. read more

When I had some miner issues with my moped, the owner Joe and his crew told me what causing the issues and fixed them professionally. I highly recommend that keeping up with oil change. Well, I wish I would have read the reviews a little better. I am here visiting family. I thought of renting a moped while I was here for two weeks. I found Mopeds Direct to be the cheapest around! I 'am a struggling College student and thought that saving a few extra bucks was Awesome!! I called to make my reservation and was told that it would be ready by early afternoon. Perfect!! Right!!! Then I was told more like 5, and then was told 6. I got there to pick it up at 6:15 and they were still assembling a New Moped. The shop was dirty and in disarray and when I mean assembling I mean still putting the throttle, front breaks,ect . My cousin and I stood there for about an hour and watched them work through the hiccups. Trying new things, taking the throttle apart and then putting new tubes on the bike. This should have been a sign, the bike hadn't even been test drove yet. I was gonna be the ginny pig. We did a test drive around the block(me on the new bike), the man who seemed to be the owner (was on his own bike) to see how my riding skills were. He was very nice and said I was all good to go. So Off I went, excited! The next day it was a thunder storm so I didn't get to try out the bike too well. So we waited till the following day to head to the beach and ride around town with my shinny new scoot. We were headed to Ala Moana Center, every time I came to a stop the moped would die off, the throttle was too low. No problem I thought. Bring it back. When I get there, no problem the guy was gonna fix it right then. He also noticed a pipe rubbing along the front tire, he attached a zip tie and said I was good to go. I got half way to Ala Moana Center and pulled on the brakes, just to realize I HAD NO FRONT BRAKE. Don't panic, bring it back. I did just that they told me it would be just an hour and I could ride off in the sunset again. Yeah!!!! He said that attaching the zip tie had disassembled the front brake. That there should have been a bracket there to hold it in place. Uh what? I asked if I was gonna be taken care of,(money wise, I had spent a lot, and had more than just one miss-hap) I felt a little cheated out of the whole experience. And the things happening weren't an operator's error, they were from poor assembly. The younger( I mean younger than 30) Mechanic said no problem, he was really sorry and the owner would take care of me when I returned the bike. So, throughout my entire trip, the moped didn't run perfect, dyeing up hill, idling really low, some nuts and bolts fell off, I just kept collecting them and putting them in the front compartment. In returning the moped, the owner looked at me as if I was a compete liar that his mechanic would say such a thing, because he runs such a great establishment and could rent the bike to anyone. He told me he should have given me the money back that day and taken the bike back to rent to someone else. Yet I was never given that option and looking back would have taken that knowing the customer service now. In my next trip to visit family, I will rent from another establishment... I encourage everyone to shop around a read reviews before renting a bike. Nothing happened thank god, but I felt the bike was put together in a half ass manner and didn't feel safe or taken care of. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. seriously, this place is horrible. i bought a gtx moped from them 7 months ago (at a price you can find anywhere else) with a so-called "3 year warranty". my fuel line busted, which can happen to any moped, but i called them to see if they could take care of it and they had me come in everyday for literally 4 days in a row (which is a real hassle when you have a busted moped) and the guy was never there. i'd even call right before i was to come in at our "unofficial appointment" and no one would even answer. and when i got there the other worker, who claims he's not allowed to fix it, wouldnt even let me leave my moped there overnight to be fixed in the morning. i went to another local spot (Glenn's cycle supply) and the guy there fixed it in 10 minutes with no appointment, and fixed my breaks for free. they also had for sale my friend's moped that had been stolen, sketchy much? WILL NEVER SHOP AT MOPEDS DIRECT AGAIN. ****REPLY TO COMMENT BY JOE**** 1. nope, definitely a former customer. 2. definitely had loose brakes***, and if i was a competitor, i would more than likely know the correct spelling of brakes, so excuse my typo. 3. definitely a busted fuel line. weird, so you've repaired over 30,000 mopeds that are much older than 7 months? i'm no mechanic, but malfunctions and mandatory repairs can happen to even the most prestigious of brands, ranging anywhere from dinky mopeds to BMW's. thought an established mechanic, for which you so proclaim, would know such a thing. 4. i did call 4-5 days in a row, and we even set up a time for me to come in, TWICE. you failed to be there both times. 5. funny on how every bad review for you guys, you seem to have an excuse. instead, why don't you try providing better customer service to retain a broader segment of your customers. I'm not sure if this is the moped shop I bought from.. I went to Puck's Alley and I believe they were called "University Mopeds" but from reading some of these other reviews, I think I am at the right thread. JP is a very gracious, knowledgeable, patient, mechanic/sales rep! I called him before coming in and was impressed with his brief and direct information on various mopeds! I met him in person.. and again.. consistant with relaying his knowledge! I knew to buy from him! I got the 2012 GTX. It rides supurb but the best selling point is the 1 and 3 year warranties along with the fact that JP has such excellent work ethics! He is extremely busy but still offers for me to come in at around 400 miles just to comp me a diagnostic look over/test drive, just to make sure the bike is peforming the way it should! This shop is straight, business, don't let that it is so very low key fool you! JP is professional and makes sure you understand your bike to ensure safety and the longevity of it! I have a Vento Triton R4 that I have ridden everywhere on Oahu. I rely on it completely for transportation. However, the business from which I bought it, Mopeds Plus, has gone through its share of mechanics of varying abilities -- and honesty. I was having some serious issues with it as I passed the 20,000 mile mark, in spite of the fact of regular servicing by Mopeds Plus. It wasn't until Joe at Mopeds Direct looked at it that I found out that the guys at Mopeds Plus had pretty much been packing me full of $%!^. Joe showed me where they had TAPED the oil injector in place after having broken it off, rather than using the proper fittings to repair it. This led to the piston not getting enough oil, thus it was trashed. They also had been regularly replacing the belt ("Gee, I dunno why this thing chews up the belts so fast!") where it took Joe about two seconds to identify the source of the problem. Joe worked liked a dog to fix my moped, doing a near complete engine rebuild. He wouldn't let it leave his shop until it was done right. This bike will now peg the speedometer! Joe has real integrity and superior knowledge on these types of engines, a combination which I have not found with any of the other mechanics who have worked on my bike. Joe da man! read more

I'd look elsewhere before renting a moped here. And if you reserve online, it would be wise to call ahead prior to going to pickup your moped. They self admit that they don't check their inventory of what has been rented online once the shop closes at night. We arrived via an $18 cab ride from Waikiki with an action packed day ahead of us and there were not any mopeds available. We had reserved and paid online. The guy was nice enough, but didn't seem to care too awfully much that he couldn't deliver on what we had reserved and already paid for online. He referred us to another shop that was about a thirty minute walk away. We ended up losing out on a few hours of our rentals ... but still had a blast. read more

This place is a DISASTER. Ever since I bought a moped I have been having some problems. Breaks are squawking from day one. I had troubles for several months to start the moped. It would not start right away. It hasn't been a year yet and moped is falling apart. Screws and parts are falling off and when I took it for a repair to the shop, owner (very rude) told me to come back tomorrow because he is just about to close the store. HORRIBLE customer service. I must mention that owner said to me while selling the moped that we have 3 years guarantee and he will fix it any time we come. In addition, my friend also bought a moped there and every time he would stop at the traffic light, moped would turn off. Terrible experience overall. read more

If you're a student or just a someone who wants a moped without having to go through bull then this is the place to go to. Joe has helped me with two of my mopeds and Steve ( I think that's his name, not good with names ha) at the parts place was also very helpful and respectful. I would give these guys 5 stars but sometimes (and its only been once or twice) the time frames they quote you on parts and sales can be a little off and take longer then when they said. In their defense though these guys work hard all day to make sure that their customers are happy and their store remains what I believe one of the best moped shops on Oahu. I used to take my moped here and all I can say is once they fixed it something else broke down. I poured about $2000 into this moped and it still wouldnt run properly. Once I stopped taking my moped to these guys the weekly breakdowns stopped. Now I take my bike to Quik Fix. Honest guys who really try to help you out. They fix my bike and it doesnt break down as soon as I pull out of their driveway. read more

I brought my moped scooter to be repaired as it would not turn off when the key is removed. The oil line had also become dislodged. After three weeks, multiple unanswered phone calls and a drop in visit, I returned to get a status update on the repairs. I had been told a week prior when I finally got to talk to someone that a part had been ordered and was being shipped from the mainland. When I went to the shop, my scooter was in the back row with other scooter parts stacked on top of it and it was obvious that they had not worked on it in a while. When I questioned the employee (who was playing the bongos and smoking with his friends rather than doing any sort of repair work)he said that it runs but a part needed to be ordered but would not tell us what the part was or if it had even been ordered. I had told him that I needed it to be fixed soon and he started to get an attitude and told me again that he needed to order the part. I went to get some lunch and discuss my options with my finance. We decided to take the scooter somewhere else and returned to the store. The employee was still playing the bongos and when we told him that we wanted to take the scooter he got angry and started to pull it out from under all of the other parts. I asked him what he had done and he stated that he had changed the spark plugs and cleaned the fuel lines. This was not at all what we had brought the scooter in for repair, when I told him that he became more angry and said that it wouldn't start, even though he had already said that it does. I told him that when we brought it in it would start, he got more and more angry and said that he needed a few minutes to put everything back together. When it came time to pay I gave him my credit card and he called it in to his other shop. The only receipt that he gave was a carbon copy that said "oil line, $20 credit" Upon inspection of the scooter, I found that the brakes no longer worked and that the screw to hold the front of the scooter on did not fit anymore and the lock for the under the seat storage was loose. I then took the scooter to another shop rather than risk any further damage. I stopped in at the main shop to confirm that they ran the credit card for the correct amount and to perhaps get a receipt. The manager at that shop argued with me some more, but finally did show me the receipt for the transaction. It was a horrible experience and an egregious waste of my time. I would never take anything to be repaired there and will recommend to everyone that I know to do the same. read more

Knew nothing about mopeds and wanted a quick way to get around town when I started at UH. I was afraid that after I told Joe I had no idea what I was looking for he'd raise the price. He told me about how they work and gave me a price, I got several other quotes and Joe had given me the cheapest and was the only one who had been willing to work with me personally to let me know what I needed. I took it in when it wasn't working right and he told me it'd been dropped. I expected to have to pay because the damage wasn't under warranty, but he fixed it for free. It took a while to get it back, but it was worth the wait and runs smoothly. Joe knows what he's doing and is honest and cares. The shop is a little unorganized and messy, but it's because they are constantly repairing moped and working, so completely understandable. I recommend him to all my friends that are thinking about mopeds. read more
