It saddens me to write this because I've been coming to Moreland's for years, but after my Father's Day experience, I won't be returning. My African American military family arrived at 11:00 a.m. sharp on Father's Day. I mention "military family" because I want to paint an accurate picture: we weren't a loud or unruly group. We were five adults, five well-behaved children, and two infants looking to enjoy brunch together. The restaurant was completely empty. Not "a few open tables" empty--completely empty. No one was even sitting at the bar. When we told the hostess we didn't have a reservation, she went to get a manager. What struck me immediately was how flustered he became the moment he saw our group. He came out red-faced, visibly agitated, and immediately launched into how they were completely booked and there was "no way" he could seat a party of 12. We even asked if we could split into two groups of six and were met with the same response: impossible. We stood there looking at an entirely empty restaurant while being told there was absolutely no way we could be accommodated. The whole interaction was honestly bizarre. Confused, we simply said "okay" and started walking away. As we were already down the sidewalk, a hostess came after us and explained that we could sit on the patio, which was first-come, first-served. We could order through a QR code and have food brought to us. That was completely fine with us. In fact, with children and infants, the patio was arguably a better option anyway. The truth is, by that point we stayed more out of convenience than anything else. Getting five children and two infants back into three separate vehicles and finding another restaurant felt like more of a hassle than it was worth. Looking back, I wish we had simply left. Which raises the obvious question: if the patio was available all along, why wasn't that the manager's response from the beginning? Why did he act as though seating us was impossible instead of simply saying, "Our indoor dining is reserved, but you're welcome to sit outside"? I do not make accusations of racism lightly. However, after reflecting on the experience, I cannot escape the conclusion that race played a role in how my family was treated. The manager's reaction upon seeing our group, his immediate insistence that there was "no way" to seat us despite an empty restaurant, and the fact that available seating existed all along created an experience that felt unmistakably exclusionary. The interaction nagged at me throughout the meal, especially when my children and nieces and nephews started asking, "Why didn't the restaurant want us to eat here? The place is empty?" That's not a conversation I expected to have with children on Father's Day. When we left about 90 minutes later, both the dining room and patio were still far from full. I counted 8 open tables inside and 5 open tables on the patio at 12:30. I understand reservations. I've dined all over the world. But Moreland's is not a Michelin-starred restaurant with a months-long waitlist. It's a neighborhood pub--closer to an upscale Applebee's than fine dining. Yet somehow my family was made to feel unwelcome from the moment we walked through the door. After years of being a customer, that is deeply disappointing. read more

I wanted to like Moreland's Tavern. The neighborhood vibe is nice, the outdoor seating is a plus, and the live music added a great touch. They also had cider, which ended up being the highlight for me. That said, the food was underwhelming. The fries and mozzarella sticks tasted like the frozen kind that had simply been reheated, and the marinara sauce did not taste fresh. The shrimp tacos were plated nicely, but the shrimp had a gummy texture that missed the mark. The staff was definitely buzzing around, and the service felt a little rushed (they were not busy). One of my favorites. I randomly came here for dinner the first night I moved to DC and have been coming regularly since. The vibes are excellent- warm, cozy, local post-industrial brick and steel. The waiters have been around a while- hopefully that means they're treated well. The owners are around and often working. The upstairs is open when the patio is closed. Most of the food I've had has been really good, shout out to the friend chicken sandwich, smashburger, grain salads, mussels and mushroom toast in particular. Local beer options are always a hit. We're here every day except Mondays because they're not open, lol. We love Morelands! Food is great, my faves are the chopped salad and blackened catfish. Husband loves the Tuesday burger and wings. We're also southern, and say with our full chests that their grits are amaze. Morelands is great for the neighborhood, great for sports. When we're not encased in a glass nightmare of snow and ice, parking is pretty easy. Staff are all super professional and kind and very accommodating. read more

This was a great saloon and reastaraunt and we had a great time tonight. Some people hand said that Thursdays are their busier nights and I would concur. There was no space at the bar and all of the tables were occupied. The three of us stood at the side of the bar near the big screen television. We ordered chicken wings with buffalo sauce, and it included celery sticks and blue cheese dressing. The portion was enough for the three of us. After about three hours hanging out, I had managed to finish off three rounds of 0their classic lager called Other Half. One friend got the 14th Street spritz cocktail, and the other one got the Giner Manhattan. It wasn't half bad and it had sagamore rye, ginger syrup, and vermouth. This is a solid neighborhood spot. Good food, diverse menu, and good drinks. They are shooting for comfortable hang, and hit. There's a nice, small outdoor space, a few different bar spaces, and standard dining area. I have had a solo dinner at the bar, and met up with friends for drinks and appetizers, and felt at home both times. I would feel very comfortable heading here for a family dinner with kids - has that ideal balance of loud enough to mask noise without being so loud you're shouting at the person next to you. Burgers are very solid, and have been my thing in multiple variations. This is the place I head to when I'm in the "I want something but not sure what" kind of mood. read more

I randomly found this restaurant when I was on a walk and needed a break from cold and the wind. I was lucky enough to get there in time for happy hour and ordered a few items on the happy hour menu and on the regular menu. To start I had a glass of house Cabernet and their pretzel bread. The bread came with Dijon mustard and pimento cheese. It was really delicious; the bread was fresh and warm. I also ordered the steak tacos and a side salad. The steak tacos were delicious and cooked to perfection with a chipotle slaw. I really had a good dining experience. If you're ever in the DC area, you should give this place a try. read more

Moreland's is go to spot for us, and it never disappoints. For breakfast, I had the sandwich, which was delicious with a great balance of egg, bacon, and maple aioli. My friend loved the breakfast tacos, especially the chorizo. The tots that came with both dishes weren't the best, but we'll try a different side next time. We also had a dinner gathering with friends, and the serivce was outstanding. Our group was seated at the large table downstairs, and Amanda, our server, was super friendly and helped a couple of friends pick out drinks. The manager, Max, stopped by to check in on us, brought over drinks, and made sure one of our friends with a food allergy was well taken care of. The portions were generous, my husband's burger was huge, and my salmon was cooked perfectly. The atmosphere was cozy, even on a rainy night, and we ran into a few neighbors. It's so nice to have a neighborhood spot with great food, drinks and a welcoming team. They keep things fresh with a regularly updated menu, and the prices are always reasonable. Moreland's Tavern is a great place to get good eats and good drinks. It's nestled in between DC neighborhoods of Petworth, Brightwood close to the neighborhood of Manor Park. We took an Uber there and walked home on a nice fall evening, enjoying the stroll to no end. Ok done with all the hoopla of where ya at and how ya got there and got home. We came to Moreland's on the bequest of a friend, who knew a friend who runs this joint in DC they wanted us to check out. Well, it was freaking all that! Or should I say Moreland's is great. This is the epitome of unpretentious bar food at its best. The best part, its right in a neighborhood, which I personally love to know. If I lived by Moreland's, I'd eat and drink here on the regular. Solid tap selection, check. Great service, check. We were ushered in and sat down and ate good. Not sure what more I could ask for. I had the Pork Schnitzel which was outstanding and substantially filling. The lemon aioli sauce they had on the Schnitzel was quite tasty and the Schnitzel was prepared well. I think I could of ate two if it wasn't for dessert. Wife had the veggie burger which was OK. Nothing to rave home to mom about. It could have used some texture balance but hey, you don't eat meat so piss off, Ha Ha! But back to dessert, we had the most decadent flourless chocolate cake with a drizzle of crème something. I could, well I did lick the plate. This is a neighborhood pub/establishment and solidifies the term local. I am beyond delighted we were recommended to come here as we enjoyed a great meal and had great service to boot. If ever in the DC area this would be a place I'd come back to in heartbeat! A table warned us that the steak and schnitzel were not the best so we ordered blackened fish sandwiches and tacos which seemed to be cooked correctly but lacked spice. We made reservations for inside and I'm glad we did as they seemed to get crowded quickly. The servers were pretty friendly and attentive. Overall the food was good. The BBQ chicken on the poutine was smoky and moist but the gravy seemed more like a loose barbecue sauce than gravy. The fish was light and seasoned but the remoulade and salad were even more tasty. The toasted brioche bun was delicious. The bread pudding was okay, and had less custard than most places. The chocolate in it was delicious and not too sweet. The spicy pineapple margarita was strong and had a subtle pineapple flavor. I also tried the fried green tomatoes, not pictured. The tomatoes score of a 4/5 helped increase the overall rating. The tomatoes were well seasoned and the chipotle aioli was a great addition. I'd return to try more of their menu and appreciate the great location in the neighborhood. read more

However, we were greeted by a server who took our apps and disappeared, then did what looked like a roll-up on the table behind us and stopped serving us to maybe take a break. Another server picked up our table after a 15-20 minute wait/to refill, acted like nothing happened, and finally took our main course order. For such a cozy place, their menu was fairly extensive and everyone picked something different on the menu...and no one was disappointed with their choice. We actually all ended up sharing with one another because the portions were pretty generous (well, larger than we had anticipated). Cute little neighborhood restaurant on 14th Street. I visited over in September around 8pm for dinner on Saturday night. It wasn't busy. The service was fine. My dish of shrimp with quinoa was good. The shrimp were cooked just right and flavorful. The quinoa was cold and could have used more seasoning. The steak and fries were seasoned well and cooked to medium. They also have outdoor seating, but didn't have any heaters the night we went. I would definitely go back if I'm in the area. read more

Amanda, our server, introduced herself. Super friendly and helped a couple friends figure out drinks. The manager, Max (?), came by to say hi and dropped off some drinks and food. He checked about a food allergy for one of us, which made us feel more comfortable. Portions were great. My husband's burger was huge and my salmon was cooked perfectly. (I don't know why cooking salmon is hard for some places in DC, but it is!) Good vibes on a rainy night and we saw a few neighbors. Came here this past weekend for lunch and was really impressed with their COVId precautions. This was my first attempt dining at a restaurant since quarantine (outdoor seating only) so I was a little weary. I made a reservation for two at noon. In the post lockdown phases, they don't open until noon. Sunday was an extremely hot day and they did a great job of ensuring everyone was seated in shaded or umbrella covered areas. We were greeted immediately and the servers all wore masks. I also observed them clean not only the tables, but the seats as well between every customer! And every table was 6ft or more away from each other. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich and my bf ordered the steak sandwich. I also ordered the iced coffee with whiskey. Everything was delicious. Only tidbit, my bf commented that the steak sandwich was smaller than expected. However, the food came out remarkable fast and we enjoyed our meals. The service was also quick and attentive. Overall, Moreland's is doing a great job with putting proper protocols for the current COVID situation, while also still putting out quality food! As this was my first time at a restaurant since quarantine, I am grateful for such a pleasant experience. read more

Great dinner! I ordered the Brussels sprouts and the mac and cheese: warm delicious comfort food that was perfect for a cold and rainy night. The Brussels sprouts were charred beautifully, drizzled with some kind of yogurt sauce, then topped with a light sprinkling of Parmesan cheese. I could have eaten another two or three orders of those. The macaroni and cheese was rich and creamy with three different types of cheeses and sun-dried tomatoes thrown in. Absolutely fantastic. Great neighborhood restaurant and bar that thankfully is surrounded by a big wraparound patio, which allows them to comfortably distance many tables during these socially distanced dining days. After trying them for the first time recently, we were really blown away by their quality. They are definitely underrated. The steak sandwich is flat out spectacular. It's cooked just right and has a char grilled flavor that blew us away. You can choose a side of salad or fries. These fries are some of the best in town. They have the perfect crisp and perfectly seasoned. We even ordered some to go because we were so impressed. The sandwich with fries is $15, which is pretty reasonable for steak. Highly recommended. They have a big list of drinks, too. A steak sandwich with a juicy IPA under the sunset and a pleasant breeze - that's a perfect summer moment. For those reading in September-ish 2020, all staff wore gloves and masks, and no one was allowed to dine inside. If you're feeling ready to eat out again, they're a really good choice. read more
