Just walk in! Such an amazing aroma. There's nothing like the amazing smell of freshly baked sourdough breads. Each time I go, I get something new to me. This time, the Multigrain Boule. I stopped here after going to a nearby bakery. Reviewing their website, I was going to get the sourdough bread. But after seeing the dejection, I decided in the sesame loaf. The sesame loaf has a nice nutty flavor due to the sesame seeds. It went well with the Brie I ate it with. I will need to try the sourdough next time to see how it taste. read more

Browsing through the farmers market yesterday and came upon their stand. The man was incredibly kind and willing to answer my questions about ingredients (food allergy concerns). Ended up with two loaves of country and have been munching on it last night and this morning. Was raised in the east Bay Area and moved to the Salt Lake valley Utah quite a while ago. Finding sourdough like I grew up with is hard there and I miss it! Was excited to try this. While it isn't incredibly sour it has a nice unique flavor and I'm quite satisfied with it. I plan my Wednesday morning around being able to go to Morell's and pick up at least two loaves to get me through the week. Their sesame loaf is phenomenally sesame-y, with a crumb that's both tender and robust. I'm also a huge fan of their baguette (they call it a tordu) and toasted oat porridge loaf which has a level of moistness that keeps it feeling fresh for days. The staff are also lovely! read more

I wandered in here a couple of months ago. Their door was open because the day was warm, but they were closed. The woman who told me they were closed was very kind. They are on the Carleton side of the building that houses La Noisette, Standard Fare, Third Culture Bakery and probably other places I'm unaware of. I remembered to look up their Yelp reviews a couple of weeks ago and bookmarked it. Today I made a point of stopping by. The two people I saw working were masked and gloved. I was welcomed and a man who may have been the owner came over to help me. There were several types of loaves of bread, ranging from $6.50 to $8.25 each, the most expensive being the rye. Most were 100% whole grains. I think he said they were all sourdough. A couple were 50% whole grains and one of them, generously coated w/ sesame seeds, called to me. I asked about scones and he told me they were pretty much concentrating on baking bread at this point. I bought the bread and cut off a couple of pieces to have w/ our dinner tonight. It was delicious, w/ a softer interior and hard crust. It was perfection. I cut up the rest of the loaf and froze it. It will last us a while, because it was a large loaf and when it's finished I will return, probably for another type, but maybe another w/ sesame seeds. read more

I'm picky about whole grain bread. My former favorite from market hall bakery was discontinued and they replaced it with another I used to like but that is often underbaked. Enter this ww bread made from organic full belly farms wheat. It is delicious and stands up to being sliced and frozen. I'm not eating sugar but have made an exception for their whole grain apple scones. They are delicious and not very sweet. A very wonderful occasional treat. I've been getting their products at the Berkeley Saturday Farmer's Market but I was delighted to see there is a storefront though it is only open on Wednesday. read more

I don't ever review anything, but the sesame sourdough loaf I bought from Morell's yesterday at the Berkeley Thursday farmers market is in the top 3 most delicious breads I've ever eaten. It is savory, sour, the right amount of chewy on the inside with crispy addictively nutty crust on the outside. I ate half of it with my bare hands straight out of the bag on the way home because I couldn't stop myself. Next time I will pack it in the backseat where I can't reach it. It's that good. read more

Great fresh baked whole grain breads I like the rye a lot but they're all good Eduardo and his crew create artisan breads that are uniquely delicious and simple and healthy at the same time . That is the second time I'm getting my bread from them and it is the absolute best bread you can get in the Bay Area. I'm original from Germany and I love bread which I was missing the most when we moved to California. I'm driving all the way from Fremont to get my breadfix and it is worth it every time. I have only one complaint " The Most Delicious Smell Of Bread In My Car", and I can't eat before I'm back home. Please keep up making that delicious bread for everyone to enjoy. read more

We have always found it paradoxical that Berkeley doesn't have the quality of baked goods that you would expect from a self-proclaimed "foodie" city. Most of the well-known bread bakeries in the area are disappointing. We had heard good things about Morell's occasionally over the years, but only recently decided to give them a try. To make a long story short, their breads are by far the best in town! We particularly like their tordu, which is sort of like a baguette, but with an interesting "twisted" shape. We also like their round sesame loaf very much. Their breads have a crunchy (but not hard) crust, and a very earthy and chewy interior. As an added benefit, their store in West Berkeley is located in a very cool neighborhood, which itself is worth a visit. But if you cannot get to their store on Wednesdays, you can find their wonderful breads at the Berkeley Farmers Market on Thursday and Saturday, or at Monterey Market. read more

One of those place that will get only five stars. Truly special loaves using real quality grains. It's very different bread, more real somehow than other bread. We don't eat other breads but this one is special -- it still is real nourishing food not empty of flavor. There's a soft chew and with the magic ability to not go stale for a week. Seriously magic. Freezes really well too because of the moisture content. You will have a hard time finding a better loaf in the country. It's an artisan bakery and it shows in craftsmanship and care. I'm HUGE on bread. Not so much pastries.. but real, crusty, wholesome, artisan breads. I usually only eat it plain. Every time I get a loaf of artisan bread, I slice it, freeze it and enjoy it for the week. Picked up the Multigrain and Rye bread at the Berkeley's Farmer's Market on Saturday. Morell's breads are impressionable. So good. I am a rye bread (the hearty, dense kind) lover and Morell's rye bread was really good. I've tried several rye breads in the Bay Area, and so far I like Anna Daughter's Rye and Morell's the best! They're both a little different but both more than adequately fill the rye bread hole in my life. Also, the Multigrain was great. The more you have it, the more you love it. I notice that whole wheat sourdoughs tend to lend a more savory profile, so keep that in mind! 'Sourdoughs' aren't and don't necessarily have to be sour. And it's been a while since I've had a nice tart (just right) tasting loaf and Morell's provided that! So good. The ingredients in his breads are either entirely or mainly whole grain i.e. nutritionally superior. This is one of the reasons why I love Morell's breads a lot! Good food = taste + nutrition. I didn't really know what bread was until I started eating Morell's Bread. Eduardo and Tamsen have turned me into a bread snob. Now I sneer at all other loaves. This bread is a meal. After moving to the East Bay from Germany, one of the few things I truly missed was good bread. Fortunately, I found Morell's bakery close to where I work. Their bread is excellent! I've tried almost all famous bakeries in Berkeley. Morell's bread is the one that stands out. It's always fresh and delicious and the owners are super friendly. I'm skeptical whenever buying bread in the US since I'm used to amazing bread from BBrood in Amsterdam. However, Morell's sunflower whole wheat loaf exceeded my expectations. The crust is crisp (but not too much so where it ravages the roof of your mouth) and the inside is very moist and soft. The bread has an strong nutty flavor and the sourdough tang goes perfectly with it. I got this loaf at the Berkeley Farmer's Market for $6 on June 11, 2016.
