Years ago, it was good ... Not anymore! After returning the Higley location after a few years. My Wife ordered the "Tampiquena plate" ($20.49) the entire piece of carna asada was horrible, the texture was abnormal and the flavor was unpleasant. I suspect it was rancid. The waitress was apologetic and offered desert or something else. We declined. She advised she was going the speak to the manager. Ultimately, the manager's solution was to discount the plate $2.05. This was abhorrent, the vast majority of restaurants would remove the entire cost of the food, that was better suited for the trash can. We will never return to a Moreno's restaurant. Time to try a different Mexican food restaurant. read more

My wife and I visited this place today from her recommendation since she visits a bordering business often and was curious. Place looks nice inside, waitress didn't know anything about wine, but that was expected, she looked young. I ordered a shredded beef chimmy and my wife ordered two tacos. The beef in the chimmy was tasteless, I mean no taste whatsoever, just meat, dough and cheese. I'm not sure what it was, but something in that chimmy had an odd taste that stayed with me for hours. My wife's tacos were similar to most Mexican restaurants around here, soggy. I'm not sure if they think that's normal, but there is nothing worse than a wet tortilla shell. In this case, both shells, yes, each taco had two shells, and both were soaked in juice. How hard is it to grill them first for a bit. There are a few Mexican restaurants that do that and the shells are perfect when they get to the table. On a positive side, the beans and rice were good. Oh, two tacos and a chimmy, and two waters came to $55. OUCH! Oh, one last thing.....our waiter wore so much cologne, it would take your breath away every time he would come to the table. I've been here a few times, and I actually like this place. So far, my favorite item is the mango chicken quesadilla. I've had a few other items, but it seems my go-to item is the quesadilla. The service has always been great, and even though the ambiance kind of feels like a fast food joint, it still has a good feeling. Good food but you can't trust their server Jesus Roberto. Against Moreno's policy, he automatically adds an 18% gratuity without telling you. When confronted about it he will lie and tell you "it is their policy" to add it. In AZ, you must post it on the menu, door, and receipt. If you ask Mr. Roberto to speak to the manager, he will lie and tell you he's the manager, but he isn't. He is a shift leader. Since the thiefing liar doesn't tell you, you might add a tip on top of what he auto added. My family and I came here for dinner a few nights ago and really loved it. The food was great and so was the service. The carne asada in my taco and in my husband burrito was cooked perfectly with zero chewy or gristly pieces. We have been to this restaurant on a couple of occasions. I have to say that it's on the downward spiral. There was hardly anyone there when we arrived and only a couple afterwards. Came in here on Sunday after church. Got seated right away in a booth. Place wasn't very busy when we arrived but did get filled up quickly after that. We got there just in time. Server was so disrespectful, I was very nice saying there isn't any cream cheese on my quesadilla because that's the only reason I ordered it and I also showed him. Top 5 Mexican I've had in Arizona! Just did a takeout order and I've never ordered from Moreno's before. Very clean and nice interior, friendly staff too. I got a Sonoran Hot Dog, which was delicious, if not a little too topping heavy. They definitely don't skimp with their ingredients! I also got 2 Sweet Corn Tamales-- oh my gosh! May be the best tamales I've had this year. Sweet and cooked perfectly. My Mom loved her Taco Salad, her only complaint was that they went easy on the lettuce. We come here every year for my daughter's birthday because she LOVES the chicken mango quesadilla. It's huge and really tasty! We also love the chips and the salsas & bean dip! Their chips are always thin and crispy! My very picky son loves their steak tacos, my other son always gets the bean and cheese burrito. We also tried the toro tacos, bean burrito enchilada style, smothered tamales. Everything was good. The staff was super sweet. They were not busy at all but we are a 3pm meal family so we normally avoid any rush. This is your basic mexican food restaurant. I would def not give it 3 stars, but for sure 4. My wife and I came to Moreno's for lunch. Our quest in finding flavorful Mexican food in Arizona has been a struggle for us. Most of the establishments we had gone to serve a basic flavorless collection of "Mexican Food". So, finding Moreno's was for us a blessing. The staff is very welcoming and friendly. Knowledgeable of the foods offered. We were seated immediately and presented with a basket of chips and 2 types of salsas, and 1 very creative and tasty bean dip. We placed our drink order. Mine a Margarita and my wife's glass of Pinot Grigio, which came shortly after our order. My Margarita was very good as was my wife's wine. After looking over the menu, lots of choices, we placed our order. My wife had the "Sonoran Dog", and I chose the "Moreno's Special Burrito" choosing the pork filling. Our food came quickly, and it was a pleasure to the eye. Cutting into this large, delicious burrito, and the following explosion of flavor was exactly what I had been looking for. My wife's Sonoran Dog was equally as tasty. We left Moreno's promising to return for more. Moreno's is not a fancy establishment but its clean and the staff and the food is terrific. I decided to try a breakfast burrito on a Sunday morning. It was TERRIBLE. Not only the food but also the girl working the register. It's clear she didn't want to be there (I get it, I have a job too) but no greeting and poor projection of energy and hospitality is lazy and unacceptable. I have a high tolerance for error with breakfast burritos -- they are hard to mess up. Meat, eggs, cheese, and sauce. Well, they messed it up. Machaca burrito was barely edible. It tasted like machaca jerky, burnt eggs and no flavor. I thought I could have solace in the salsa but no, tasted like tomatoe sauce and sugar. Chorizo burrito wasn't much better. Asked for no cheese, confirmed on the receipt, and still tons of cheese. Not to mention, the potatoes were the same frozen ones you get at a complimentary hotel breakfast. Unsatisfying. I took a risk. There are options nearby that are incredible (Morning Kick). The risk didn't pay off. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt -- maybe it was a bad day. Went there this morning for breakfast. 1. They insist on seating you and ordering from menu instead of ordering at the counter. At their "express" locations you can and is much more efficient for the customer. If I wanted to be served I'd go to an actual restaurant. (I have since learned that the owner has changed the "express" locations to this format as well. Why, why, why???? 2. The cashier was also the so-called waitress (Karla)and was terrible. Not pleasant, didn't come back to see how we were doing or if we needed anything. 3. Took an absurdly long time to get our breakfast burritos when our order was the only one they had! We had to ask the waitress where our food was and she never apologized or had a sense of urgency about her. 4. They charge a 3% SERVICE FEE and fail to tell you until you see it on your bill which we also had to ask for. WHY ARE YIU CHARGING A SERVICE FEE? Other reviews have commented on this fee as well and you say you are transparent but you are not. No where do you state there will be a service fee charged---we would never have come here if we knew. 5. They serve tiny cups of salsa with your order. If you want more than you have to pay for more ---how ridiculous is this. Even at legitimate/actual restaurants you are never charged for salsa. 6. You are not given any tortilla chips either. I guess you have to ask and pay for those as well. Even at legitimate/actual restaurants you always get chips. 7. Finally, they have the audacity to ask you to leave a tip for terrible customer service. Bottom line, if you have to go there then get your order to go OR go to an actual Mexican restaurant that has an actual wait staff and is in the business of customer service that provides you with as much salsa and chips as you want. Bought $88 worth of tamales on December 19. They were returned the next day. The quality of the filling in the masa was horrible. We had chicken, pork and corn. All were bad. We have been going to Moreno's since they opened up. We returned all but three tamales the next day, and we were told the manager would issue a full refund, but the manager had to do it. Due to this flu that's going around the entire household fell ill, so we just went in there, and the manager argued with my wife that she only returned a dozen tamales which is completely false. We typically frequent this Morenos whenever we are back in town, but won't be going back. Really disappointed with the management. We placed an order over the phone, picked it up and realized when we got home one of the orders was wrong. We called them to see if they would remake the correct order if we came back. The manager told us no, they checked the order with the system and the person that took it over the phone and since we already left they wouldn't remake it. They also told us we checked the order in the store (which we didn't and was our bad). They told us if we were in the restaurant they would have fixed it. We even offered to pay the difference of cost, if there was one, and they still said no. The employee that took the order could be heard in the background of the phone call being argumentative that he got the order right. In a word... Yikes. I really wanted to like this place because I love mexican food and it's conveniently located. The sad truth, unfortunately, is that this is a mediocre-verging-on-awful place. I came here on a friend date in the lives and times of covid. Masks were required when entering but not when seated. Our waitress came over (without introducing herself) and got our drink orders. When she returned, we both ordered our food. I got a quesadilla with chicken and he got one with asada. I drank about 3/4ths of my water by the time our food arrived and never once was it refilled. Not once were we checked on either. The food presented to me was a soggy, greasy, gooey mess that was basically inedible. I was able to eat one of the triangles before the God awful sog set in and the chicken tasted like... Well, I wouldn't be surprised if they used bland, canned chicken, smothered it in grease, slapped on some cheese and warmed it up. I legitimately only could stomach one tiny sliver of my entire meal.
